How to start working after you procrastinated the whole day

How to start working after you procrastinated the whole day

"I've been procrastinating the whole day."

    "I haven't done anything today, I'm such a loser."

    "Nothing done, again."

All of us have experienced a day when we're surfing the internet the whole day instead of being productive.

Let's say it's already late afternoon, what are you going to do?

Most of us, if there isn't any scary deadline looming close, say "what the hell, might as well continue" and waste the rest of the day.

It's called the What The Hell effect.

The best example of it is when people diet.

They eat healthy for some time, but then they slip. They eat a donut or drink soda.

"What the hell…" and then they go on binge eating streak.

This is binary thinking - 0 or 1. I was eating healthy (at 1), but then I failed by eating something unhealthy, I'm at 0 and whatever I do now doesn't matter.

But it does matter. After the binge is over, regret and low self-esteem flood in.

And it works the same with productivity. I haven't done anything yet, therefore I'm 0, I'm a loser. You can also hear: I don't have enough time to do something now or I'm already tired. Might as well finish that TV series.

Why do we let ourselves get away with doing this?

Because we love resets: starting tomorrow, starting next week or starting on the New Year.

All these resets have something in common. They're in the future and we naively think this time it'll be different.

Can it work? Kind of. Some people can really change their lives by resetting. But simply remember how gyms are full at the beginning of January and how soon they empty out.

Also, this concept of reset has still the same glitch. The Binary Thinking. When you don't go to the gym once, you failed, you're a loser now, again.

Because resets fail most of the time, we shouldn't bet on them.

What to do instead? It's very simple:

Mindset Shift #1: Dump the Binary Thinking

It is possible to be at 1 or 0 but in most cases, it isn't worth it. We don't have to be perfect in our diet, productivity or life in general to move forward.

When you eat a cookie, you aren't at 0.

If you count that you eat 5 times per day that makes it 35 meals per week. You failed once out of 35 tries. That puts you at 0.97. And you don't have to be 1 to be healthy anyway.

If you work 40 hours per week and you procrastinated the last 5 of them, you can still be at 0.875. You don't have to be productive every single waking hour anyway. Quality over quantity is what counts.

All of us fail once in a while and it's fine. It is human.

    That also leads to...

Mindset Shift #2: You don't have to say What the Hell

Whenever you realize that you're off track, you don't have to say what the hell.

Instead, think about who was the one who wanted this goal. It was you.

Do you still want it? If so, then acknowledge you failed a little bit. But if you want, you can still hit the target as closely as possible. To be 0.93 is better than 0. Even 0.5 is way better than 0.

That's it. It is such a small thing, but it can be life-changing. It works as a nice relief.

What if you really don't want the goal? Then it is fine. All of us have some fake goals that are just wishes or dreams that we don't really want and we're faking it because of some internal or external pressures.

When you realize something is a fake goal, please don't feel guilty about not pursuing it. Instead, find a goal you feel more motivated to pursue.

Okay, now you have the correct mindset.

    Let's finally get to work.

If you were surfing the internet all day, you'll notice that your mind is restless. You can't focus properly. You might want to quit immediately.

There are 2 possible ways how to solve it (combine them for the best results):

    1. Calm down

The best one to calm yourself down is to sit down on the chair for 5 minutes, turn off the screens, and just stare at the wall or close your eyes.

Breathe. Take deep breaths. Or focus on your inhaling and exhaling.

    Get bored.

Our brains are usually full of dopamine hits from the internet and we're overwhelmed. You know that feeling.

    2. Do the bare minimum

It's difficult to start because we're scared that it's the end of fun. Or you might be scared by the sheer amount of work or scale of the project ahead of you.

Then make it less difficult or less scary:

Set up a timer for 5 or 15 minutes and do a quick outline.

Take a paper and a pencil and sketch out the first draft. Get the first quick and dirty version. Get from 0 to 0.1.

Once you're working, you'll realize it's easier to keep working then it was to start working. When you get into the work, you will become curious about the problems it entails and you can even start enjoying the work you're doing. You can get into the flow.

    That's it.

When you realize you're failing to achieve your goal:

    Shift your mindset

    1. Realize it's not binary, you don't have to get to 1 (100%), 0.3, 0.5, 0.8 are all good.
    2. Don't say "What the Hell," instead reflect on why you the goal is worth the effort for you

    Take action

    1. Take a step back and calm down. Let the restlessness go away.
    2. Start with the bare minimum. Do 5 minutes of work. Create a rough outline. Write the first paragraph.

Even if your day didn't go according to your imagination (didn't get to 100%), it doesn't mean it has to end at 0% satisfaction and 100% regret.

I hope this helps you to pursue your goals more comfortably :)

How I made $9000 in 4 weeks from my new microstartup Simple Ops

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:21 AM PDT

I spent last 6 months trying to build Simple Ops to democratize website performance monitoring so anyone can use it.

A year back, while I was trying to measure performance for Visa List as it became a huge content website with more than 100K pages. Also as data is changing very frequently, it's very hard to keep doing this manually. I searched on google and found that all the solutions are just uptime monitoring and nothing and none of them truly measure performance. So I decided to build one for myself. But it turns out website performance monitoring is not so simple after all and with the pandemic, I had very little motivation let alone travel anywhere. It took me 3 months to do research and plan out the architecture to the last detail.

I looked at some of the B2C bootstrappers offering a lifetime deal and getting success. That's possible because they don't have a huge recurring cost with each customer, but in B2B SaaS, you have a recurring cost with each customer.

But I thought let me add and see how it goes. So added a lifetime deal with for $199. At that time I posted it on Hacker News and it made it to the front page and all the lifetime deals were over in 12 hours. Then I added $299 which got over during the week. So far I made over $9000 and got more than 25 customers. After two weeks I launched Simple Ops on Product Hunt and sold more lifetime deals. I also posted on few Reddit channels after that.

Even though it might not be profitable in the long run, I got the cashflow and customers in less time and it removed the pressure to chase customers. Now I can focus on the product. One of the biggest challenges of a SaaS startup is to acquire the first 50 customers. I have seen many startups achieve this over 6 to 12 months, some even a few years. This put immense pressure on me as the maker. But with this initial business model, I have cashflow for a year which is the best thing that can happen to a B2B SaaS. Lifetime deals can be a powerful way to get initial customers especially when you are getting started.

So finally a combination of Lifetime deal and posting on multiple social platforms did wonders for my microstartup and earned me ~$9000 in 4 weeks.

If the goal is to make money, would you be an entrepreneur or go corporate? Why?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:15 AM PDT

I've gone down both paths. And I've been lucky enough to experience the big brands (the kind that my relatives still use to introduce me to new people) as well as tech startups growing breakneck speed to boot-strapped boutique studios. I've experienced one bankruptcy and sold another. I'm working on my third but it's going too slow.

As someone who's been BOTH an entrepreneur + corporate, I know the soul-crushing feeling of working for someone else on something you couldn't care less about vs working 18h/day on a passion project not making one sent with real liability & personal credibility on the line.

As an entrepreneur, I've under paid myself for years with 120% consumed mind space (I'm stressed, don't reach out to friends, never have time for the dentist etc) and work my ass off for that big fat exit that may or may not happen in ~5-7 years of time. High risk with potential of high reward. As a corporate employee, I have an MBA+enough experience to land a 6-figure base salary but likely in a job where I want to kill myself. Slow and steady yet predictable rewards.

I'm in a place right now where I'm either going to stay with my 3rd business and try make it work OR pull the plug and go the corporate route.

Money in mind, what would you do? Especially experience sharing + lessons learned! Thanks

My microSaaS is now generating $300 MRR

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:28 AM PDT

I want to start this post off by thanking the community for the quality material, tips and endless motivation which kept me on track while developing, launching and marketing my microSaaS. It's been a dream of mine for a long time and I've managed to push through and reach my initial goals ahead of time. In order to give back, I've decided to post some tips regarding my journey, which I hope will help some of you.

Three months ago I've developed and launched my SaaS https://voxiso.com - an online AI separation engine, which enables users to isolate audio sources, remove vocals, instrumentals and separate individual instruments of uploaded files on the fly.

I've decided to use Wordpress as my main CMS considering its infinite scalability options. It works in cohesion with a custom built API and Python script in the back-end which does the actual processing. I've developed the whole thing in a month and a half during the Corona downtime, since I had a lot of time on my hands.

The main stages are described below to give you more detail:

    1. During the development phase I've written an SEO-optimized PR article, which I decided to release through PRWeb. This gave me incredible exposure and drove a huge amount of traffic to my website. I've also done keyword research using the Google's keyword tool and included the main keywords into the article, as well as into my main website. The cost of PR distribution was $200. Well worth the price. The link to the article -> https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/introducing-voxiso-the-worlds-first-user-friendly-ai-powered-online-vocalmusic-remover-301046402.html
    2. Front-end design was done by a great graphic designer from Argentina that I found on Upwork. The whole process took a couple of weeks and cost me $1000. Also well worth the money, as the final product was jaw dropping.
    3. I've integrated Stripe as it's cheap and straightforward to set up recurring monthly payments. They use a pay-as-you-go system which ends up costing me 1.4% + €0.25 for every payment processed.
    4. I've ran Facebook ads in order to gather a pre-launch list of 1500+ subscribers. The ROI on this was incredible and I managed to get a huge list of potential clients before launching. I used a simple static image with the frontpage of the website with a promise that first users will receive a 20% coupon once we launch. I've spent $50 on this.
    5. Launch was a great success and I've managed to get around 12 customers in the first week. Once I launched I messaged my mailing list + ran $100/mo FB ads. This was enough to get the ball rolling.
    6. I've optimized the technical SEO on my website and to be honest this was the most important thing I have done in order to get on the first page of Google for the highest ranking keywords. You can see the Google Search Console graph here -> https://ibb.co/WW1McXP
    7. Sales have been fantastic so far and the platform is running very smoothly (knock on wood). I've had maybe 5 - 6 support e-mails which I had to answer regarding the technical questions of the tool. You can see the sales statistics here -> https://ibb.co/0rf3r1p

I'm currently working on SEO and audio engine optimization. I'm creating a blog in order to post useful articles on audio separation for existing and potential users. The only expenses I currently have are DigitalOcean for hosting + Stripe processing fees.

Lastly, I would encourage everyone to work on your dream relentlessly. It's a slow and sometimes stressful process, but if I can do it - you can too! Good luck to you all!

P.S. Make sure to ask any questions you might have and I'll be glad to help!

Purchase a business, instead of starting from scratch?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:52 AM PDT

A bit of background. I am in my mid twenties and am making decent money (about 130k annually) in a Mid to LCOL area in the southeastern US. I was always extremely entrepreneurial when I was young, however, when i graduated from school, I decided that I needed experience and that I should get a "real job" in a corporate setting, primarily at the behest of my grandfather. I have bounced around, moving up in roles for the past couple years, and landed the job I am at now, which i absolutely hate. It is boring, completely uneventful, I am learning nothing, and my boss is incredibly difficult to work with.

With that out of the way, I want to own my own business. I love every aspect of business ownership; selling, the responsibility, the difficulty of solving problems. However, I don't have specific skill sets outside of corporate finance and marketing (as in photography, carpentry, coding, etc.), because consulting and finance is pretty much all I have done.

I have money saved up that I could use to get a loan or invest. So would it be smarter to just purchase a small business that is already running, and then use my skill sets of management and process implementation to grow it? Or should I spend the time to learn a new skill set, and then start a business to solve problems, using that skill set? I know that this is incredibly ambiguous, but I would be much better at, and happier, running and managing say a construction company, than actually being the person driving the nails, if that makes sense.

I figure there have to be people out there that feel the way I do, so i figured i'd ask. Let me know what you think!

    UK business registration

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:02 PM PDT

I'd like to register a business in the UK in order to protect the business name from ever being used by a competitor.

Is it possible I do this without submitting my name to be publicly viewed on the gov.uk company lookup tool?

It's a small company based out of London but we've begun to grow however don't have a formal office headquarters yet as we had to stop looking due to COVID-19.

So is there a way to not disclose a name or address to appear?

    Thank you

Completing the solid foundation of my LLC and business.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:55 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I'm in such dilemma and I don't know how to proceed forward. I'm 23 years old and currently working a 9-5 however I've always wanted to a business owner and do my own thing.

With a help of a older friend, I was able to start a one member LLC completely mine. I officially received the EIN number yesterday.

While that LLC was being formed, i've been working on a cosmetic brand. I would like to sell items under the business name "X" Cosmetics.

    My first question

    1) This means I will be DBA as x cosmetics with the LLC as the parent, correct?

If so, how do I officially achieve that?

2)I know I will need a business bank, this business bank checking account will be for the LLC, not the 'x' cosmetics, right?

    3) I need a business credit card, i'm assuming this credit card will also be under the LLC rather than the 'x'cosmetics, right ?

    4) does my business credit card have to be from the same bank that i have business checking account?

    5) What else do you recommend I do ?

Later on I do plan on adding more ventures to the LLC like real estate and such but for the time being i would like to focus on the cosmetic brand.

Launched My Computer Repair Business A Month Ago, Need Advice To Go Forward

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:45 AM PDT

    Hi,

My name is Peter. I'm the co-founder of MauMar Computer Repair & Co. based in Houston, TX. I launched our business a month ago and for the most part, I'm proud of what I've accomplished. I decided to start my business because I was tired of working for Geek Squad - I'm good at what I do and the fact that I was doing it to earn someone else money stopped sitting right with me.

For the most part, I think I've done a good job of self-branding myself and giving great quality so thus far. The only thing is I feel as though I'm in a slump right now. I can't seem to get any more people to book with me and I'm having a hard time figuring out where to go from here.

    So far:

    - I have ad campaigns running on Yelp, Facebook, Microsoft Bing, and Craigslist.

    - A decent website: www.maumarfix.com

    - I offer 50% off first-time services to incentivize people to book with me and from there hopefully going forward with a word of mouth

    - Recently got business cards and stickers to provide after service is complete

My business model consists of going to people's homes whether it be to pick up to take back or fix there if possible. Most of my traffic comes from Facebook and while I do get a lot of clicks to my website there seems to be something preventing people from wanting to book with me. I don't know what that is.

I wanted to ask if there may be something wrong with my website as clearly people click on it because they need something fixed but there seems to be an element missing that makes someone not want to book. What do I need to add or adjust to make people book? I'm not sure where to go from here, or what I can do to improve.

Are my advertising options too small? Do I need to go bigger? Should I maybe look into renting office space?

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read my post, I look forward to advising, criticisms, and improving on myself and the business. I'm 20 years old and I think now is the perfect time to learn without financial consequences!

How do I know if I have a viable idea?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:48 AM PDT

I'm a web developer and I find it ridiculous that there isn't a better way to develop the UI of a website than to hand-code it. I think there's an opportunity for a drag and drop editor built for professional developers that outputs and allows editing of UI code rather than something like Squarespace.

I could just go ahead and spend a few months building a MVP, is that the right way to go about this process? Is there some way to test the market first? I don't really need much money from this, I'm not looking to build a multi million dollar empire (though that would be nice!) I just want some supplemental income, figured I could charge $10/mo or something and if it's something I would use in my normal job, then it could be massive.

I can build the software, but I have no idea how to validate the idea or where to start business-wise. I would be doing this myself. It's a pretty big undertaking and my first attempt at a SaaS, so I feel lost and discouraged.

Anyone know much about medical device sales? How lucrative is this, and after getting a job for a few years, how can you start your own business in some form? Is it mostly pairing buyers and sellers, and taking a percent? I have a MS in medical science, which basically mirrors the first year of medical school. No formal business education but incredibly hard working and know how to grind.

I want to start my own Babysitting and Tutoring agency with teenagers. I don’t know where to start. I need help

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:20 PM PDT

Hello! This is my first post on this reddit. I am a Freshman in college. I want to start a babysitting and tutoring agency in the DC metropolitan area. I am currently a full time babysitter/tutor. I have more than 5 families reached out to my service. Parents are currently desperate for tutors and babysitter since schools are going online.

I want to match high school and college students to parents. As of right now, I have more than 10 potential students that will be interested to babysit.
I am planning to advertise the agency(I won't advertise as an agency) on my community listserv, next door, dc parent forum, and social media.

One of my issue is how to charge. I am not sure if I should charge the sitters/tutor for example 3$ every-time they work. However, what's holding them back to leave. My other option is the charge the parent a one time search fee of like 50$ and if it doesn't work out. I give them back 50% or all their money. My other option is to charge the parent like 5$ for each day the person is working. Is there anyone that has done this and that could provide me with advice?

About to hit max number of patients/week, not sure what to do.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 08:26 AM PDT

Physical Therapy practice is hitting year 4, and we are at full workload. Already it seems ~40 hours a week of work, and soon there will be 40 patients per week, which requires additional note time and billing issues to deal with. We have previously outsourced billing issues to a contractor, but this is minimal 1-2 hours a week, and we understand its an option.

Here are options that we DO NOT want to do-

2 patients per time slot(like our competition does)

Shorten sessions to 37 minutes(like our competition does), this still bills for the full 1 hour

Hire more PTs, but this would also require moving to a bigger office, and loses the guarantee of seeing the very popular current Doctor.

Anyway, maybe someone can give a 4th option, or tell us the lesser of evils. Thoughts?

Would you say “ fuck it “ and quit your job? Or stick to the plan and transition from employee to entrepreneur

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 05:37 AM PDT

My plan was to transition from employment to entrepreneurship. ( as I build my skills( marketing) and my business( lead generations) and feel established enough to quite.

But today I had this " I've heard enough" moment( I work at the hospital and they force us to shave the beard to pass the n95 mask fitting)

Now I did it before, but they want us to do it again. And as silly as it is. This is simply killing me.

I just wanted to say fuck all and quite.

But in the other hand there are bills to pay. And this is simply KILLING MY ( entrepreneurial )SOUL

What would you say. Stick to the plan( logical, rational, long term) Or follow feeling and quite

The Hair & Beauty space encompasses a growing $20 Billion market.

We want to build an app for this space much like the one Houzz built for home remodeling.I've been working on several design iterations of this app, including prototyping and full-color wire-frames, that allows users to find their "stylist soulmate" and discover inspiration for hair style ideas.

Have also spent an ample amount of time surveying the different stakeholders (salon clients, salon pros, salon owners) and have incorporated several of their suggestions wherever a common theme emerged.

Women change hairstyles, cut, or hair color about 150 times on average in their lifetimes.

PROBLEM The common process of searching for and organizing inspirational hair images, and ideas, for every change-up is both time consuming and tedious. And once a particular style has been narrowed down, they then must locate a stylist with the right combination of talent, and a vision that matches their own, to do an amazing job the first time.

Failure really isn't an option when it comes to a woman's hair.

SOLUTION The app we're working on would allow users to select image(s) from a collection of thousands of hair and beauty photos and, after clicking "Style-Match", an integrated visual api will cross reference those selections and compare them to the contents of images held in the portfolios of participating stylists, manicurists, hair colorists, barbers, nail techs, and several other salon professionals.

The best matches are then listed in ranked order and can be sorted by proximity to the user.

Click on on any stylist's profile and you'll be able to see everything about them including their photo portfolio, bio, credentials, online customer reviews, and more.

An in-app messaging feature lets you contact the stylist directly, ask questions, get advice, and arrange an appointment with eyes wide open well before they ever sit in the chair.

Users can also browse photos for inspiration and save their favorites to "lookbooks" (personal image folders) they can share with friends and social connections.

    Multiple monetization features are included.

Salon Professionals and Salons can build their own Profile Pages and upload their entire Digital Portfolios to the App, upload tutorial videos, place advertisements, sponsor sections, and more.

Currently ISO a technical partner with back-end experience building mobile apps, particularly 2-sided participant apps (provider and user).

Some knowledge and experience with machine isn't essential but is a plus.

My friends and I are designing a product(we're all first year college students)and we're actually stuck at two questions related to it:- 1) what material should be used for the product which is heat resistant, cheap and slightly flexible? 2) how do we fix this product to a wall such that it doesn't permanently damage the wall and can also be removed and fixed easilly (vacuum was one idea)?

Can I use a resale certificate to buy equipment for my business?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:17 AM PDT

I can get the equipment I need from a wholesale vendor for much cheaper, but they want a resale certificate. Is it possible to buy it from them and pay sales tax either through them or through my own quarterly filing so I can take advantage of their wholesale prices? I want to pay taxes and am not trying to work around those, just want a better price.

Help Starting an Online Music School?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:32 AM PDT

I'm looking to create a website to advertise my music teaching business, MurphCraft Academy.

I already have the domain name and a work-in-progress site.

Does anybody have any experience building websites that can offer me some advice? I don't have the capital to hire a web developer so I'm trying to get the site up and running by myself.

What sorts of pages do I need?

Here is some background that may help: The idea is that I can direct people to the site where they can find free music resources (maybe sheet music, tabs, free tips and tricks, pre-recorded video lessons, that kind of thing), as well as information on scheduling lessons/pricing. If someone is interested, they can sign up for monthly lessons (I use PayPal), and the lessons will be done through Zoom, as I've found the latency and audio quality of Zoom to be better than other options.

What sort of pages do I need to run a professional business? How do I format the pages on the site if my main income is coming from using Zoom (completely outside of the website)?

Anyone with experience offering advice would be greatly appreciated!
