This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Investing is no longer just a way to get rich but a necessity for middle class

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:27 PM PDT

One thing I've notice in my years in investing is how agnostic the average person is about directly investing their own money into the market. It seems clear as we go on in our society those without clear long term strategies fall farther behind.

Economic security takes time, or it has for myself but many land mines lay ahead for any wanting to achieve long term wealth.

Pensions are a long thing of the past, 401k's under perform (I still have one), financial advisors want too much of the pie, cost of goods are constantly rising.

The one bright spot is that a lot of information is now available online and zero commission trades. This is absolutely awesome and with those tools anyone can achieve their desired wealth and dreams. My opinion anyway.

Investing directly in the stock seems to be the only path I've discovered to achieve long term financial success.

What are your opinions, thoughts, and hopes when investing directly into the market for the long term?

    AMD overpriced?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 09:19 AM PDT

I'm just a beginner but there is something wrong with the prices of AMD and Intel. Market value of Intel is 205 419 MUSD while the market value of AMD is 91 188 MUSD. The problem with these is that Intel makes roughly 70 times more money (2019). Surely AMD's earnings will improve more than Intel's and AMD has better future overall but still.

So, is AMD overpriced or is INTC underpriced

(in 2019 amd made 300 million while intel made 21 billion profit after taxes)

Etsy (ETSY) - E-commerce giant big boom in homemade face-masks and other products.

Norton (NLOK) - One of the biggest antivirus companies which I'm sure will do very well with the current working from home

ATVI blow away expectations but is down after hours?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:38 PM PDT

I have an Activision call 8/7 $89 and I'm spooked. Activision beat revenue expectations by 300 mill, price share was .75 instead of the expected .59 and they literally changed the companies whole annual earning for next year from 6.9 billion to 7.3 billion. But is down 1% after hours? What's going on?

    Cerence Inc ($CRNC) crush Q3 2020 ER -- up 22% today

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:35 AM PDT

    Hi r/stocks,

2.5 months ago, I posted about $CRNC as one of my growth stock picks for Q2/Q3 2020. I'm now up 100%+ on my initial investment, and based on the messages that I've been getting, it sounds like people have made great returns on it as well.

$CRNC is up ~22% today. But WHY?

    • Revenue in the fiscal third quarter came in at $74.8 million, well above the $61.5 million in sales that Wall Street was looking for. That translated into adjusted net income of $12.1 million, or $0.31 per share. Analysts were modeling for just $0.07 per share in adjusted profits. The automotive technology specialist said bookings were gaining momentum.
    • "We recorded the second highest bookings quarter in the company's history supported by several strategic wins in all major geographic markets," CEO Sanjay Dhawan said in a statement. "While the business environment in the near term remains challenging, we are maintaining the 2024 growth targets in large part due to the strong bookings we have seen this year and the initial positive reactions by customers to our new product initiatives."
    • Secular technology trends continue driving fiscal YTD revenue of $238.8M, up 8% Y/Y despite major impact of COVID-19 on global auto production.
    • KPIs indicate long term growth potential as % of worldwide auto production with Cerence technology of 54%; Average contract duration of 6.2; Growth in billings/car YTD +7% Y/Y; Backlog at start of FY20 was $1.36B.

    Will update more later.

NVAX down 25+% after hours, despite announcing positive vaccine results

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:44 PM PDT

I'm trying to find news that could explain the sudden drop, but all I see is a WSJ describing what seem to be unambiguously positive results. For instance, they found lower doses of vaccine (with an immune-booasting additive) produced the best results.

Can anyone provide some links to what could explain the sudden cliff dive?

Edit: And we're back to even. Still no convincing explanation though.

And now we're down to -6% again

BA: FAA Formally Proposes Fixes for Return of Boeing’s 737 MAX Jets

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:13 AM PDT

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/faa-formally-proposes-fixes-for-return-of-boeings-737-max-jets-11596496799?mod=lead_feature_below_a_pos1

    Text:

U.S. air-safety regulators will weigh public comments before issuing a final order that will allow passenger service after two fatal crashes.

U.S. air-safety regulators for the first time publicly spelled out the full range of hardware, software, crew training and maintenance changes they are proposing before Boeing Co.'s 737 MAX jets will be allowed to resume flying passengers.

The 36-page document released Monday—filled with detailed technical explanations and multiple new emergency checklists for pilots—had been expected. Many of the four proposed design changes and extra equipment tests largely track the various safety enhancements Federal Aviation Administration officials began crafting even before the MAX was grounded globally in March 2019, following two fatal crashes that took 346 lives.

Still, the proposal marks a decisive moment for the MAX fleet, along with Boeing and its airline customers, because it signals that the FAA, foreign regulators and the company have reached consensus on the most important fixes and controversial technical details. Subject to a 45-day public comment period and what is likely to be weeks of additional FAA analysis and responses, Monday's move appears to keep the MAX on track for what government and industry officials project could be a return to widespread commercial service by early next year.

Before that can occur, however, the FAA will wait for the results of a series of independent technical reviews, simulator tests by international pilots and further public comments on specific pilot-training requirements. Those simulator sessions are projected to begin in three weeks at Boeing's pilot-training facilities at Gatwick Airport outside London, according to one person familiar with the details, though the timetable could slip.

A Boeing spokesman said: "While we still have a lot of work in front of us, this is an important milestone in the certification process."

The document technically covers only 73 Max airliners registered to U.S. carriers. But with few exceptions, foreign regulators and carriers appear poised to go along with the proposal for some 400 aircraft Boeing previously delivered around the world. Regulators in Canada, the European Union and Brazil, who have been most closely involved in the deliberations, are expected to follow the FAA's lead.

Another roughly 450 of the planes, which haven't been delivered to airlines, are expected to be subject to the same requirements before they can enter service. And jets rolling off the assembly line also will have to incorporate the eventual modifications.

As part of the FAA's action, the agency released an extensive companion report indicating the lessons learned from what it described as more than 60,000 hours of work by some 40 agency experts, including pilots and engineers, including analysis of some 4,000 hours of flight and simulator sessions. In addition to the design failures and improper assumptions about pilot reaction time that played roles in both crashes, the report notes that the FAA has resolved "additional safety concerns beyond those identified during the accident investigations."

The FAA outlined additional checklists to be used in dealing with unreliable airspeed, as well as pilots relying on more automation when halting a descent toward landing and then climbing away from a runway. In one of the more unusual features of the proposal, the FAA suggests that under some circumstances, it may require both pilots to manually crank a control wheel in the cockpit to raise the aircraft's nose.

Between them, the two documents cover issues that have been central to the MAX's safety shortcomings, from automated flight-control systems prone to dangerously misfire to inoperative cockpit warnings to hazardous wiring that could cause electric short-circuits. The FAA, as expected, also proposed adding a safeguard by requiring both of the MAX's flight-control computers to operate simultaneously.

In addition, agency experts want enhanced sensor tests and "an operational readiness flight prior to returning each airplane to service."

A major goal of the safety effort is to provide pilots more timely and clear-cut information, cockpit warnings and memorized emergency procedures in the event of sensor malfunctions or other system failures. By reducing pilot workload in emergencies—and eliminating the cacophony of conflicting warnings such as those crews experienced before the dual crashes—the FAA aims to dramatically enhance the fleet's safety.

The FAA is proposing revisions to checklists pilots use in various emergencies, such as when they face contradictory cockpit readings and alerts.

Under the proposed changes, for instance, pilots would use a revised checklist for an emergency known as a runaway stabilizer, which can unexpectedly push the plane's nose down without pilot commands.

The new procedure would include memorized steps, such as one pertaining to thumb switches the pilot can use to level the aircraft's nose. Pilots' inability to recover using these switches were at issue in the two MAX accidents.

The MAX crisis has eroded trust in the Chicago plane maker among many customers, regulators and passengers, while sparking a flurry of federal criminal, civil and congressional investigations that are still under way.

    Physical or stock gold

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:11 AM PDT

Hey i know this is a pretty dumb question but i just want to be 100% clear and get a simple quick answer because i tried researching it and there is no clear answer.

So since inflation is going to affect the buying power of our cash, to save the value of it many people are buying gold and things like that.

When people talk about saving their cash from inflation do they mean buying physical gold or gold stocks like $GLD ?

All replies are appreciated thank you!

    ATVI Earnings

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:22 AM PDT

Do you guys think ATVI will have a good earnings report? Personally I'm pretty bullish. Everyone is at home playing video games and they own Modern Warfare, Warzone, the COD mobile app and so many other things that bring in tons of money, and if you combine that with everyone being forced to stay at home for multiple months you get a very bullish case for ATVI

    Nordic Semiconductor. A hidden gem?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:24 PM PDT

Nordic Semiconductor (OSE: NOD, formerly Nordic VLSI) is a fabless semiconductor company. The company specializes in ultra-low power performance wireless system on a chip (SoC) and connectivity devices for the 2.4 GHz ISM band, with power consumption and cost being the main focus areas. Typical end-user applications are consumer electronics, wireless mobile phone accessories, wireless gamepad, mouse, and keyboard, intelligent sports equipment, wireless medical, remote control, wireless voice-audio applications (e.g., voice over IP), security and toys. (Wiki)

Their most recent quarterly report is quite impressive (a few keypoints from their presentation):

     Bluetooth revenue USD 70.1m (+25.1%)  Proprietary revenue USD 16.4m (+29.8%)  Cellular IoT revenue USD 1.2m (Compared to Q2 2019)

    Order backlog of USD 201.9m, +80% compared to Q2 2019 and 64% above Q1 2020

Total development kit shipments +16% in 1H 2020 (which means more people are interested in starting developing products with their hardware)

In Q3 2020 they expect between 16-28% revenue growth!

The stock price is just under 9 € right now, which is surprisingly cheap.

Any thoughts? I honestly think it is a very attractive company.

    Revive therapeutics, anyone?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:30 PM PDT

Looking for advice from seasoned traders only, please. I've never been a gambler, but I feel like I should invest in Revive Therapeutics (stock ID: RVVTF) because a reliable Canadian source told me some details about why the FDA approved one of their drugs for COVID treatment.

As I understand it, "a friend of an employee" administered the gout drug to two family members infected with COVID and the symptoms significantly improved, which confirmed what some scientists at the company had suggested, and this anecdotal result was unofficially the basis for FDA approval.

I'm wondering if yesterday's spike in the stock price is somehow related to that rumor. If anyone has advice, I'd love to know whether or not to buy up as much as I can now before the results are announced next month. Thanks!
