How do I get my burden of a sister (20) out of my mother's house? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:46 AM PDT My 20 year old younger sister really proved that she is a disappointment. She refuses to get a job or go back to school. She lays in the house all day doing absolutely nothing except sleep, eat and stay on her phone. She expects our mother to clean up after her. When our mom asks her to do the simplest chore, she goes into screaming and yelling. Cursing out our mom, locking herself in our mom's room, calling her friends and making herself into the victim. Recently both my mother and I were cleaning the apartment. My sister was layed up in our mother's bed with the AC on full blast just chilling on her phone. When my mom asked her to clean the bathroom she goes "why don't you tell OP to clean it". When I let her know that she needs to get off her ass and respect her mother, she goes off on me, slams the door shut then calls her friends to cry about how much we bully her. She'll leave piles of dirty dishes in the sink and will refuse to wash them until they attract roaches. She leaves/throws food wrappings behind beds, the TV on the floor, everywhere. She is the reason why we have rats and roaches. When she's putting on makeup she'll rub the excess mascara from her eyes onto the bathroom walls and all over the sink. She has a pile of filthy wet clothes just sitting on the bathroom floor that she refuses to take care of. She stays up in the middle of the night having the loudest most ignorant conversations which consist of laughing and cursing. When we ask her to quite down she screams to who ever is on the phone "OMG ARE YOU HEARING THIS?!?! I TOLD YOU THEY HATE ME, I CAN'T EVEN TALK TO Y'ALL WITHOUT THEM HATING ON ME... I KNOW RIGHT THEY'RE SO TOXIC!!!". She is extremely belligerent. She thinks that screaming the loudest and talking the fastest means you've won an argument. She even make fun of our mother accent. We are Nigerian and English is my mother's second language and she has a thick accent. The fool will actually make fun of the way our mom pronounces things, going as far as to make fun of our mother for being a home health aid. I am at my limit. This has been going on for years. She has physically fought our mother and I numerous times. Wished death on both of us, reduced our mother to tears and so much more. The police have done nothing. They say that we have to go through the courts if we what her removed from the apartment. Mind you she has never paid a bill and still except our mother to pay her cell phone bills. She runs the AC in my moms room on full blast all day, the current electric bill is $140. Due to Covid everything is at a stand still. The family courts encourage people not to come into the offices, and to just call, but know ever picks up those calls. I really need some advice. My mom cries everyday because my sister is a nightmare. We've already tried consulting, she just says the usual "my family hates me" thing. The best solution is that she is removed from our mom apartment. We live in NYC. Does anyone have any legal advice on how to remove her? EDIT: Thank you everyone for all the advice. I'm taking time to read through them with my mom. I'll update when we've found the best solution. PLEASE CONTINUE TO SEND ADVICE. ALL IS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:44 AM PDT Lots of backstory and issues with this neighbor but relevant piece is surrounding a cat. We're in Arkansas, US. Our neighbors got 2 cats about 10 months ago and put them both outside around January. We have 3 cats (inside only) and when this cat (kitten, really, just a year old now) showed up outside in our backyard, we knew it was theirs and texted to make sure they weren't looking for it. Over the course of the next 6 months she ( the cat) would come over and hang out on our back porch with is and we'd feed it every now and then. About middle of May, we noticed she was having tick problems, texted the owners and told them. They told us they would provide her treatment, and based on paperwork, they did not. Approximately one month later, the cat showed up sick (snot/sneezing/coughing/trouble breathing). We let this continue for about 5 days and then messaged the owners to have her taken to the vet. They stated they would do so. The morning of July 2nd, the cat came over as soon as we came outside with our morning coffee. She was clearly in respiratory distress, would not eat/drink, and was visibly smaller (skin around bones). My wife took the cat to the neighbors house and asked them to take her to the vet. The neighbor said they were just going to have her put down and asked my wife if she wanted her. My wife said yes and the neighbor provided my wife with all the paperwork for the cat, including adoption paperwork. We took the cat to our vet immediately and the vet was able to treat the illness (worms/respiratory inflection/malnourishment) and stated in no way was the cat to a point of needing to be put down. We have had the cat inside our home since July 2nd of this year, she is no longer ill and plays with our other cats. Yesterday, August 8th, a little girl came to our door asking for her cat back. We have video but no audio (stupid me had mike off, have since turned on). My wife told the little girl she needed to have her parents come talk to us and sent her in her way. We are now worried that we'll lose the cat or have fallen in to some sort of legal trouble. The adoption agency was up front with them (per paperwork) that the cat was indoor only and had an illness that would require above normal care for a cat (she has Feline Herpes although the neighbors state she has Cat Coronovirus), so they knew what they got and violated their agreement with the adoption agency, as well. What, if anything, do we need to do to insure we are able to keep the cat (she is a great indoor kitten and has attached to me as her person) and they cannot bother us. We do not have a good relationship with this neighbor, and honestly no desire to have one. Edit: they adopted two cats, by the time the cat in question got sick, they had already put the other cat down due illness and their stated inability to pay to resolve her illness. Tl;Dr: neighbor neglected cat and violated adoption agreement. We have the cat now (after vet treatment and recovery) but they asking for it back. [link] [comments] |
Girl lies her age on Dating site, "father" threatens to press charges( I think it might be a scam) Posted: 08 Aug 2020 04:38 PM PDT Hi this is a throwaway account. So I'm going to use A as the name for the girl. So I'm using Hinge and swiping on girls when I came upon A. I like one of her photos and we eventually match. I'm 21 and her account claims she's 18. We chat, me just being casually friendly. A says she was going to take a bath and if I wanted to have her number so we could keep texting. So I just say "sure why not". A becomes quite provocative and so I go along with it. She then begins to send me nude photos, so I give flirty texts but never send her any photos back in return. It was late and I decided to head to bed for work. I found it strange how quickly she was willing to send nude photos so soon of meeting someone. Next day, her "father" texts me with her number calling me a sick pedo and saying I was sexting with a 15 year old. I instantly delete all the photos she sent and because I had no clue wth just happened. I then decided to go look on her account on Hinge to go report that A is underage but she so happened to unmatch me on Hinge. So i thought to myself this all seems like a coincidence. I received another text from the "father" saying I have no regard for anyone's life including my own and says he'll soon press charges against me. Am I in big trouble or is this a big scam. Neighbors have put up a trail cam looking directly into my back yard. (Ohio) Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:33 AM PDT Short backstory first- We live in a suburb of Columbus, OH. Our backyard is surrounded by a chainlink fence that is partially shared with neighbors behind us. Last week, my wife was spraying our yard to kill off some poison ivy. Neighbors had their dog in their yard, so my wife was not spraying the shared portion of the fence. As my wife was walking over to let neighbors know that she was going to spray the fence and that they should keep their dog away from that section, neighbor's wife started screaming about us trying to kill her dog and that if anything happened, they would sue us. After she stopped yelling, my wife was not so kind in telling them that we were going to spray the fence line because we don't our 7 year old daughter or any of her friends getting poison ivy while playing in our yard. I went out to mow today and as I was picking up sticks, I noticed that neighbors have now set up a trail cam pointing directly into our yard. Do I have any recourse to force them to take it down? I really don't want my daughter and her friends being recorded by these psychos. Edit to add a photo of the camera and how it's obviously just meant to look into our yard [link] [comments] |

Can the police hold my phone until I give them access to it? They do not have a warrant. Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:18 AM PDT This happened in Pennsylvania. It's kind of a long story as to how they got it, but tldr is I blacked out and woke up in a hospital with my phone missing, and they found it before I could. I am a minor, so the police are telling this stuff to my family, not me. According to my dad and grandmother the police will not give me my phone back until I give them my passcode. Is this legal? Or are they making this up? EDIT: the police did not take my phone while I was blacked out. I lost it while I was out and they found it a week later. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:38 AM PDT Tldr at the bottom My girlfriend's uncle's house was broken into. Before they broke in the first time they disconnected his power to turn of the cameras on his property. The people who came stole a few things such as a sewing machine and towels. It looked like they were going to take computers but saw his safe and took the whole thing. They also seemed to have raided the medicine cabinets. When he got to his house he called the police, and they took his statement but didn't do anything. A week or so later his house gets broken into again and this time they took all his computers (about 3-4) and a small trailer attachment that was outside. He called the police again and they took his statement, but again haven't followed up. He lives in Ontario, Canada in a rural area and the police in his city area seem to not be that interested in this case. My girlfriend is annoyed that her family seems to not want to do anything because they're afraid that if they push too hard they could get retaliation from the police in the area as her family is Black and feel like they're last on the totem pole. This is fueled by the fact that her uncle seems to have bumped heads with a former cop in that area who her family believes may be involved somehow. I'm seeking advice as to what my girlfriend's uncle can legally do to protect himself and get somewhere with the police so that they can actually investigate the break in and theft. Her family no longer feels safe there and the uncle is letting someone rent the house. tl;dr: Girlfriend's uncle's house was broken into twice, both times things were stolen and cops were called and both time the police did nothing. Looking for advice on what my girlfriend's uncle can legally do to get the police to investigate. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 03:52 AM PDT Last night I was threatened by an older man who told his wife to grab his gun he was going to shoot me. I hid in a store while waiting for the police on the phone with dispatch and when they showed up they neither asked my name or for a statement. Instead one office asked me if I had any mental health issues while the other went outside to talk to the man that threatened me. I asked why that was relevant to being threatened by someone and he kept asking if I needed mental health help. I kept trying to talk to him about the man who threatened me, he was not interested. When his partner came back on a minute later he told me there was no gun I was lying and I needed to leave. I refused saying I did not feel safe and wanted to make a statement. The second police officer then started getting irrate. I reiterated I wouldn't leave till I felt safe and given a statement unless I was arrested. The officer said, fine let's do that. I said you can't arrest me without reason, what's the charge. He said I was trespassing in the store and approached the cashier and started yelling asking the cashier if he wanted me gone, if I was trespassing. the cashier refused to say I was trespassing. I waited a few more minutes to feel safe and left on my own and got the police officers names and badge numbers, but apparently my town does not actually have badge numbers. Afterwards I filed a compliant with the police department, but it was an "adminstrative compliant" only. They still wouldn't take a statement on the original issue of being threatened with a gun. I am planning on contacting a lawyer about everything. But does anyone know if the police are actually required to take a statement? Do I have any real recourse here, as I was threatened then treated like a crazy person for no reason. This happened in Fall River, MA. **Update I have footage from the parking lot showing the man pull his car right up to mine and then almost hitting me while I tried walking across the parking lot to get into the store. And it shows him pull his car over the line of two different parking spots to put his car directly in front of me. But when I tried to make a statement at the police station this morning, they said they reviewed the footage and said I was the one who approached his vehicle. The footage CLEARLY shows the man pulling up on me multiple times. I only ever approached his vehicle was when I was attempting to get his license plate and when I passed his vehicle to advise another person the man threatened to pull a weapon on me. Hot water at my apartment has been out since Friday, no clue when it’s going to be fixed. (WI) Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:17 AM PDT Hi there, long-time lurker here so forgive me for any formatting or content issues. I live in a large apartment building in Wisconsin. We have had no issues with the water before. On Friday as my partner and I left to run some errands, we noticed a sign on the laundry room door (there is laundry on every floor) stating that the hot water was out "until further notice" due to a broken pipe, and that management would be working to get this fixed as soon as possible. There was a similar sign posted at the front door of the building. We never received any phone call or formal notice from management about this maintenance issue, so unless you left your apartment, you would have no idea there was a maintenance issue. It is now Sunday and we still have no hot water. We have not seen any maintenance crews on the property either attempting to fix the issue. I have concerns that this is a very serious health and safety issue, especially since we are in the middle of a pandemic. We have not been able to properly wash dishes or do laundry because we have no hot water. Showering is still possible but it is miserable because the water is ice cold. In addition to that, I'm a nurse who works with COVID patients on almost a daily basis — I need the hot water for bathing and laundry to mitigate the risk of carrying the virus throughout my apartment complex. I'm looking for some advice on what to do here, or if the landlords are within there rights to just do nothing until it's convenient for them. Many thanks, stay healthy! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:47 AM PDT please excuse the lack of capitalization and poor grammar, and otherwise worded poorly. i have a concussion. and a broken thumb. i was in an accident. (Maryland; USA) the story: I work for a large company, who is the only company on this piece of property that owns their building. everyone else rents theirs. i'm talking am0zon sized buildings. warehouses. distribution centers. My warehouse is on a private road. that the landowners own, and operate. it's hilly, like man made hills for drainage, there's no speed limit signs. there' no "hidden entrance" for my work (left hand turn). i was hit head on by someone coming down the opposite side. the driver was doing at least 70. i didn't see the driver- i was stopped about to make a left. reported by witnesses. the police couldnt write the driver a "ticket for speeding" because there's no speed limit signs. there's no yellow line in the middle of the road. my car insurance and the drivers are disputing the accident. i'm not worried about that. per say. but i believe this could have been avoided if there were speed limit signs, a hidden entrance sign, and a stop sign by my work entrance. (where oddly enough, there's a bus stop. and people complain about people speeding by it all the time and 'almost getting it'. there are no signs, just a road big enough for two tractor trailers to drive down with no yellow line. no signs. not a single one. when someone is in a 'valley' of a hill. you can't see them till they come over the crest. and if they're flying doing 70.... i'm lucky to be alive. i was carted off in a ambulance. i don't remember much of the accident or the events after it now. and i need my brain to do my job but i don't think i can (logistics). idk what the do. should i try and go back to work monday (the depression is horrible and work would make it easier to manage. i need to stay busy) but i don't think i can do my job. and idk if i should if we're gonna make this a case. i don't know what to do. work said not to worry about when i come back...but like... what can i do? can i hold the people who own the road/land accountable? should i try and go back to work monday if i do go after them? thanks. Posted: 09 Aug 2020 12:29 AM PDT For some context: •We have no real way to contact our landlord except through our house manager who is her brother. •We don't have her phone number or know where she lives or anything. •Our landlord doesn't speak English so there's a language gap as well so everything has to go through our house manager and he tells her, this is problematic because they're brother and sister and they never talk with us so we don't know what they're really saying. •our house manager is the landlords 21year old younger brother who also lives with us. I've only been at this house for a month, I was only in the master bedroom for a month. Within this week I was kicked out of the master bedroom I specifically rented and signed the lease for and was relocated into the smallest room in the house without 30 days notice. They were then angry I told them that they should've given me 30 days notice. When they first told me to move rooms they said I had 14 days and I should move slow so I did move slow, then the next day they said I had a week and then the next day they said I had two days. They kept changing the timeline, claimed the parents had to come out on an emergency flight because Covid was spiking in Vietnam. (Oooo great for me, just what I want to hear about the people coming to live in the house) I believe the landlord and house manager lied to us though, because there was a small spike but it's much worse here in America. I learned they closed the borders two days ago, the day they arrived so I'm starting to think they were trying to get the parents in now because they don't know how long the borders will be closed for and they aren't even American citizens and they can't be sent back with the borders closed. When I complained about no 30 days notice and not knowing if the parents have Covid my house manager told me if I don't like it then I can leave and he didn't owe me a 30 days notice for changing rooms. My house manager never mentioned his parents coming to live at the house with us before or while I signed the lease. I read over the whole lease out loud with my mother and signed it in front of her too. Nowhere in the lease did it say his parents would be coming from Vietnam to live in the house or that they would take the master bedroom. It's a month by month lease. He at the end of this month casually told us his parent would be coming to live with us at the end of the year in January 2020 and they would take the small room. But that's not what happened. My landlord and house manager refuse to lower the rent to $600 because it's the smallest room in the house and claims I should pay the same as him and the other tenant because rent includes utilities. Their rooms are significantly bigger and they pay the same as me right now which is $650. They won't make a new lease with me, so the lease I signed is still linked to the master bedroom that his parents now reside in. Our landlord and house manager gave my room that I was still in and renting out to their non rent paying parents she just flew in from Vietnam who I'm not even sure are legal citizens and may have Covid. The other tenant and I have no idea if they have the virus or not, our landlord and house manager refused to show us the paperwork that says they came out negative. In fact they were angry I asked. Our house manager said that his parents would be going under a 21 days quarantine as soon as they got there and always be wearing a mask and gloves outside their room and only be in the kitchen to cook and then eat upstairs in their room. Our house manager told me the parents were given the master bedroom because it had a private bathroom that would be safer for them to quarantine with. The problem is that his parents are NOT QUARANTINED, since the two days they've been here I've not once seen them in their room. They're not wearing masks or gloves like My house manager said they would and they've had dinner with the landlord (their daughter and grandkids) and the landlords children at the dining room table downstairs every day. They just got off a plane, they just came from a foreign country where cases are spiking and they're not quarantined. They're walking all around the house, the living rooms the garage, the kitchen the laundry room touching everything and spreading germs to everyone in the house. Our house manager told us that WE have to wear masks in the house now and WE can't use the living rooms or dining room now and WE have to eat in our rooms and stay in our rooms now. Why are we quarantining when the parents aren't? They're putting us and their family in danger and at high risk. Here's the kicker though, he can still eat at the dining table and in the kitchen and use the living rooms. Also our house manager doesn't do his share of the chores around the house, the other tenant and I do our parts of the chore chart. I've cleaned that whole kitchen including the 'family fridge' I'm not even allowed to use. I've vacuumed the house many times, I've cleaned his dogs pee off the carpet, I've cleaned his dogs poop off the back lawn. He's not cleaned the kitchen, he's not cleaned the bathroom, he's not vacuumed and he's not cleaned the shared bathroom like he's supposed to have done for the last two weeks. Yet he expects us to keep up our duties. His excuse for not doing his chores is that he's so busy, and he doesn't have time for it because he has other stuff to do like set up a fish tank. That's an excuse he actually made. He went camping last week for four days and left the house a mess, his stuff was everywhere, the bathroom wasn't cleaned still, he left a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, he left his dogs poop in the backyard, he left open wrapper and plastic and garbage on the floor in the living room from setting up the fish tank and his and his dogs stuff were scattered all over the house. I refused to clean his mess and when he came back he had the audacity to yell at us for the house being a mess, even though it was all his stuff. I asked him what was messy and he said the carpet wasn't vacuumed enough. I had vacuumed two days ago, the carpet was as clean as it always is. Then he banned us from both living rooms and the dining room because 'were messy'. And then a day later he was telling me he wants me to stay in the house because 'you keep it clean and do your share of chores' So I'm just going to assume he was looking for a reason to ban us to our rooms so his parents could have free reign of the house when they got here. And the camera situation, he has 5 cameras set up downstairs so he can always watch us, as he said that we would have access to them but he still refuses to give us access to them so only the house manager has access to them and he can watch us at all times. He has audio turned on too and he listens to our conversations so now we can't talk in private unless he's not home because the walls are so think you can hear everything your roommates saying up stairs in our rooms. My other roommate was talking to herself the other day asking what she should have for breakfast then the house manager texted her to tell her what to have and he said he can hear her through the cameras. That's a total invasion of privacy. And he made it a rule that we have to tell him when we have people over but he never tells us when he's having people over. We get in trouble if we have someone over without telling him but he has his bf over all the time without giving us a head up. That's just the bare minimum at this point but I could really use your help with legal advice and what actions to take next. I can't be with my family now, I've been exposed to a high risk environment, I can't be with my friends, or my boyfriend, I can't got to church and I feel terrible going to work knowing I might have been exposed. I work with children, at a daycare, I can't give this to them if I have it, I couldn't live with myself. And I just don't know what to do. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 11:59 AM PDT Without being too revealing, I work at a corporate store in Michigan. My store manager explained that my opening manager counts my drawer and establishes the beginning balance. My closing manager then finds the ending balance at the end of the night. If any money is missing, I get the write up. My till was $19.96 short on Thursday. So, $20 short + 4 pennies. I explained there might be a chance the money got sucked up inside the register, because I set it on the till after receiving it while still dealing with the customer. I count money back 2 times when adding and removing money from my till. I count change back. I have had a till at work for YEARS with very few issues. Now, I start this new job a month ago, and never have I ever not been able to count my own till before. Is this legal?? I feel like I'm being sabotaged and I have no way to double check my own till, yet I'm still being held responsible/accountable. Maybe it was just an accident.... but.... help?? [link] [comments] |
HOA wants me to move my fence, but I have county permits Posted: 09 Aug 2020 11:10 AM PDT I live in the central Florida area and I received a letter from my HOA recently stating that my fence reaches beyond the scope of my property. I bought the house 3 years ago but the fence was installed back in 2011. The fence passed inspection like everything else when purchasing and after reaching out to the contractor who originally installed it, he had to get county permits to install it. The HOA is threatening to fine over 15k. What can I do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:23 AM PDT FEDEX erroneously delivered a very expensive (~$1000) electric stand up desk to our house. We've called FEDEX five times to recover the package over the course of a month and it's still here. Each time they acknowledge the request and nothing happens. We've done our best to contact the correct address, we've called and left a note in the mailbox, and no response. We live and North Carolina and the elements are starting to take a toll. At what point is the package legally ours? [link] [comments] |
Agreed upon repairs not performed ethically Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:10 AM PDT After a home inspection was performed there were a number of issues that needed to be repaired. Among these was a poor water pressure issue identified throughout the house. It was "repaired" once and the issue returned before closing. I asked them to do a more thorough job and noted I would not sign until the issue had been fixed, as agreed upon. I also insisted on an inspection of the drainage pipe, as it is cast iron and around 60 years old (nearing the end of its expected life). They did so but didn't provide any tangible evidence other than "it's fine". Anyway, I went through with closing. I did not have a warranty of any kind. It has been two months since closing and the issue returned but is worse this time. According to the plumber who inspected the issue he said the sink installed in one room was done in a way where it was impossible for it to get full water pressure or drain properly since the sink and faucet are incompatible sizes. He also noted that the water pressure had essentially been artificially increased to a level that would damage the pipes. I suspect they did this as a short term band-aid. Basically he said they did a shoddy installation and repair job. The house was a flip and the guy who runs the LLC has a very successful business flipping all over the Raleigh, NC metro area, so i'm sure he uses these contractors frequently (not that it matters). Am I simply out of luck here? The repairs will cost around 1500 dollars. I don't plan on going to court over that amount, but was curious if this could be evidence they didn't actually repair anything to begin with and breached the contract. Does the fact that I accept their initial repair mean they are off the hook for it? I am happy to provide additional detail as I can. [link] [comments] |
Does my ex have legal recourse after I contacted the women he was cheating on me with? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 12:19 PM PDT I have been seeing this guy for about a year. In May I found that he had been sending who I had thought was his ex-girlfriend money. I broke up with him, messaged the girl to let her know and went about my life. He contacted me several weeks later and we ended up getting back together under the condition that he would be more open and honest about who he was still in contact with. I never heard from the girl. Last week he left his smart watch at my apartment and having had a lot of bad feelings, suspicious explanations for his whereabouts, etc., I decided to look at the watch just to see if there was anything out of the ordinary--hoping there wasn't and I could put my paranoia to rest. Turns out he has three full time girlfriends, none of us knowing the others existed. He accomplished this by having us all spread out, I live about an hour from him and only get to see him weekends, one girl lives in another state. I made the decision to get their phone numbers from his watch and text them to let them know that he was cheating on them. I feel that we all deserved to know this information and that it would be wrong of me to let them go on believing they were in love with this compulsive liar. One of the girls was discussing their future wedding plans with him in these messages. I just couldn't live with myself if I didn't let them know. Knowing this guy I feel very confident that he will retaliate. Can I get in trouble for having looked at his watch? It is pin protected and I guessed it would be his birthday and was correct on the first try, so I am worried he can take legal action based on this. Is there anything else I can/should do to protect myself? He has not threatened me and I know it is not illegal to cheat on your girlfriend, so I don't see the point in calling the police or anything. Located in CO, U.S. [link] [comments] |
My mums boyfriend goes through my room Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:10 AM PDT Every time I go out to work or school or to see my friends, my mums boyfriend goes through my room and looks through all my stuff, mums told him to stop once before and he said 'I go through her room because she can't be trusted (because I used to eat in my room), when she Earns back my trust, I'll stop' so I don't know how I'm meant to earn back his trust but it is so rude that he does this, he also goes through my rubbish every time I take my bin out, is it illegal for him to be touching my things? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:27 AM PDT (PSA this was originally posted in r/AmITheAsshole I was told I might want to post it here. Also From SC, USA) For backstory, I'm a tutor and help local college and high school students with work. With COVID, I've been titled the neighborhood helper basically. I have a small business with employees in the school months and just me in the summer months. Cast: M - Me, S - Student I (F17) have a student (M36) in the local community college. He asked for help with his work and I agreed. I gave him my basic liability statement, (I'm not at fault for failing, I'm not at fault for not providing "enough notes" I provide anywhere for 5 to 15 pages of notes for a lesson depending on the amount of help the student needs, I charge on a sliding fee scale, etc) we agreed upon this electronically, those texts are no longer on my phone but the ones where I advised him he was going to fail are. For 4 weeks, I helped S with his English Comp class and Probability and Statistics. English Comp is a basic english class that he started 5 WEEKS LATE. His professor allowed him to do the assignments with 40 to 50 points taken off. He did not ask for my help with most of these assignments. (He finished Prob and Stat with a 93) We were texting about 2 hours ago, and this is the gist of the conversation. M: Hey, sorry to bother you, I just wanted to let you know you still owe me 1,750 S: I failed, why tf would I pay you? M: I'm sorry you failed, I truly am. I told you it would be virtually impossible since you started so late. You know my rules, you agreed. I need my $1,750. I can offer a pay schedule to where you pay a little every month if that's something you want to do. S: I'm not paying. that's it. I spent a lot of money for your help and I still failed. You will not be getting paid, not trying to be mean. So, what should I do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2020 08:37 AM PDT tl;dr Hit and run drivers almost killed my gf and her brother, and fled the scene in a separate car. The identified owner of the car claims her car was stolen, but waited 10 days later to do so, and only told her insurance. The police closed the case after a week without taking any evidence that we have. My girlfriend and her brother were the victims of a hit and run crash from two wrong way drivers, in separate cars. This occurred on the highway in Atlanta, GA in July. My gf was driving in the HOV lane when driver 1 coming from the opposite direction crashed into her nearly headfirst. She and driver 1 both swerved at the last minute to avoid impact so thankfully it wasn't as bad as it could have been. There is a dividing wall along the highway stopping anyone from crossing over, so the wrong way drivers were driving like this for at least a few miles. Driver 1 also had his headlights off until right before impact. After driver 1 crashed, driver 2 bumped into them, pulled over and helped driver 1. Driver 1 seemed disoriented and refused to leave the vehicle that would later explode. They inspected the damage on driver 2's car, and drove away. My gf did manage to get some footage after the accident (she was disoriented), and managed to record both of the other cars that were involved, skid marks showing Vehicle 2's path, and a sign on the highway for reference of the exact location of vehicle 2. There is also some footage of the drivers. Unfortunately, the license plate for vehicle 2 is too blurry to identify in the video. The police asked my gf and her brother just two questions, about where the other driver was, and whether or not they would need an ambulance. Later in his report, the officer wrote that my gf was "distracted adjusting the AC." At no point did she did ever mention being distracted or an AC (the AC in the car doesn't work). She happened to record the conversation as well. He also only listed 1 other vehicle involved, despite the skid marks, being told by the victims, witnesses, and visible car parts. The police report has no photos of anything that occurred unfortunately. In addition, the officer who wrote the original report can't be contacted (always busy). They also weren't honest with the time of impact and time of response (they said impact happened 35 minutes later than it did, and they arrived on the scene literally one minute later). There is the video with the timestamp of course to disprove this claim, but I am worried about disputing information that is opinion based from the officer (such as the AC), even with evidence she never said this. They also listed the other driver's speed with the exact speed my gf say she was driving at. It's pretty clear to me the officer who filled out the report wasn't exactly truthful, or interested. We called the police to get an update on the case (we couldn't get information during the first few days as they generated the report) and were told the case was closed, and that we had to get into contact with the officer directly to convince him to investigate/look into the case again (which seems impossible the past 2 weeks, we can't reach him). Are there any steps we can take to have the case reopened with all of the evidence we have? Or is there anyway to open a new case to get a statement from Driver 1? She did not file a police report, she only reported the vehicle stolen to her insurance 10 days later, which seems suspicious and doesn't leave a statement for us to work with. [link] [comments] |
I bought a house, and there's a coin collection in the wall Posted: 08 Aug 2020 04:12 PM PDT Found it when tearing out a fixture to renovate. It's old pennies and silver dollars, maybe worth a few thousand dollars. Do I own it? Can previous owners (probably was put there by some folks a few owners back in the house's history) claim it? Woman has possession of a ring that my late dad purchased and won’t turn it over. Do I have a case? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:40 AM PDT Hello to all who can shed some light here. A few months back, I was contacted by a woman who was friends with my father's ex-girlfriend. My dad had purchased a Cartier ring for his this ex girlfriend some years ago before she broke it off with him, and this friend of hers claims that she was "given" this ring by my dad's ex for "safe keeping". When I was initially contacted, this woman told me that she had been holding on to the ring for years and that she had "always felt the need" to return it to me, then agreed to do so after I suggested that we sell it and split the proceeds but is now refusing to do so. Do I have a claim here? Or am I SOL? Thanks ahead of time. [link] [comments] |
