Did I screw myself while talking with a claims adjuster the other day? Insurance

Did I screw myself while talking with a claims adjuster the other day?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:31 PM PDT

My father passed away a couple weeks ago and was left unattended in the house. Needless to say, he started to decompose and between him and his 2 dogs, the house is quite a mess and needs a biohazard team to clean it (or at least the room her passed in). My dad holds an HO3 policy with the company. Skip the next paragraph if you want to get to my question.

When I reviewed the policy, it seems the only things not covered by it are claims relating to home-sharing, rentals, sinkholes, sprinklers, or floods. The only other thing I can see relating to potential non-coverage would be the "limited fungi, rot, and bacteria coverage" clause where they note coverage of up to $10k per incident for "Perils insured against" which refers to "Section II" of the policy, but there is 2 Section IIs; one noting that everything save for the 5 items I noted above are covered, and then another noting that only smog, rust, or water seepage are covered. The latter is noted right after the "Perils insured against" note, so it makes me wonder if they'll deny it as this would be bacterial cleaning from my dad's death and it doesn't relate to smog, rust, nor water seepage. There is further note that "exclusions do not apply... to the extent coverage is provided for in fungi, rot, and bacteria Add Coverage under Section II with respect to loss caused by a Peril Insured Against other than fire or lightning". If I scroll down to Add Coverage under Section II, it notes the the total loss (up to $10k per loss) covered for any removal of bacteria, replacement of building structures, and testing of air quality. So it's confusing. It reads like "this is not covered, unless you have an exception, which you do." I'll get to why this is relevant below.

I contacted his homeowners insurance company and they told me to open a claim with them. For reference, I'm an early-20s recent college grad, so the extent of my insurance knowledge is health insurance that I've never made a claim on. Lost both of my parents and am working 50+ hours a week on top of everything. Needless to say my mind is completely fried and I am not thinking clearly.

I opened a claim without getting any quotes and an adjuster got back to me. I explained the scenario to him and he asked that I explain it again while he recorded our conversation. He asked some super basic identifying questions then asked that I explain what happened. I explained. He then asked me if I could see any damages to the dwelling. The thing is, I was unable to enter the dwelling, so I could not see any damages. The police recommended I stay out until I can get proper PPE as the air quality was abysmal. I can't remember if I said on the recording that I was unable to enter the house or not. I definitely made the adjuster aware, but I'm not sure if it was during the recording, so let's assume I didn't say it.

Did I royally screw myself here by basically saying there's no damages that I noticed? I mean obviously the house needs a hazmat team to come clean it. The adjuster as soon as he turned off the recording told me there likely is no coverage. He said he would review my dad's policy and speak with his manager by end of week to review the case and confirm, but that it is extremely uncommon for cleanings relating to death to have coverage which is the POLAR OPPOSITE of everything I've found online. Even one of the cleaning companies reps I spoke to kinda laughed and said he's worked with my dad's insurance company repeatedly and never had an issue collecting even one time. Another company also agreed that an HO3 will cover it "an overwhelming majority of the time". I called the adjuster back today and noted I can get some estimates and he basically said "that's all well and good, but we likely won't cover it, so what you do is on you". We also talked some and he said he'd move up the meeting with his manager to tomorrow and get back to me with more info right after.

So did I just screw myself by saying there was no damage? Where can I go from here and do you guys have any recommendations on how to prepare myself for what I'm assuming will be a fight tomorrow?

I can't really afford to have this place cleaned on my own as I've already dropped THOUSANDS between lawyers and funeral costs, so I don't have much cash left for myself and to take care of the dogs. I'd hate to walk away from my childhood home because I can't afford to get it cleaned appropriately.

Sorry for the emotional BS. Thanks for any help, guys.

[Oklahoma] Motorcycle stolen. Now being told that the $2500 default coverage for optional equipment is no longer there.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:18 PM PDT

Bought a moto policy, full coverage, a year or two ago. Bike was stolen a month ago, dealing with adjuster now. She's telling me that there is no default coverage for equipment and because I hadn't elected to buy additional coverage, that $0 is covered.

This is bullshit though because I remember pricing how much it would be to have $3k or $4k coverage for equipment versus the $2500 they offered, and deciding that it wasn't worth it to pay any extra.

I also had a moto policy with the same company back in 2014 and that bike was stolen as well. They paid out $1500 in equipment coverage, despite me not having paid a penny extra for it.

I've been told multiple times over the past year that yes, I had $2500 of default coverage for optional equipment. Also, my policy states "PART D > COVERAGE FOR DAMAGE TO YOUR AUTO INSURING AGREEMENT A. We will pay for direct and accidental loss to "your covered auto" or any "non-owned auto," including their equipment, minus any applicable deductible shown in the Declarations."

So my equipment, which was all permanently installed on the bike, should be covered. I have a feeling they are looking at my lack of coverage being "accessory coverage" but I feel like equipment and accessories are different, and that my equipment were not accessories and should definitely be covered as per the policy text and per the agreement I made at the time of purchase that I was paying for a policy with $2500 equipment coverage.

Stated value on a 90s truck, possible?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:28 PM PDT

I tracked down and rebought the vehicle which was my first car when I was 16. It's a 97 Chevy z71 pickup. It was in rough shape with 380k miles on it but I've spent over $10k restoring it to like-new condition. New trans, new engine, nearly every mechanical component rebuilt/replaced, body work, new paint, interior reupholstered etc. I have receipts for everything and I will never sell the vehicle.

Is it possible to get a stated value full coverage policy on the vehicle? I know this is possible with classic cars, but would it be possible on a later model vehicle like this?

I have Esurance and have a few Questions

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:38 PM PDT

Last weekend I was driving my 03 Trailblazer (this is the older of my 2 cars and because it's so cheap has a $100 deductable on Comprehensive and NO Collision coverage), just a few miles from the house a 18 wheeler tanker truck drove past me going the other way and I heard a loud "smack", a sound I am familiar with, a rock hitting glass and after a few seconds I locate the chip on the windshield, it's about the size of a silver dollar, is about a third of the way up the windshield and just to the drivers side of the center of the windshield, so not directly obstructing my view. Also I live in Georgia.

So question 1 is, if I call this in to Esurance will I end up having to pay the $100 deductable or would I be better off just calling up a glass guy to do a chip repair? I previously did a chip repair on a smaller chip using a kit from Walmart years ago on this windshield. I've never made any kind of glass claims before, from my research it's my understanding glass claims aren't supposed to effect your rates, is this accurate?

The Second question involves something that happened last year back I was I was still daily driving the Trailblazer, I was leaving work and it had rained fairly heavily earlier in the day and I came around a curve and several baseball sized rocks had been washed out of a driveway into the road, my passenger front tire slung one of the rocks up at the body and the rocks left a sizeable dent (3" diameter roughly and a smaller one further down, I can get pictures if it helps) on the rear seat passenger side door. So my question here is would "road debris" being slung up by my own tire be covered as part of comprehensive or would i be better off just finding a undamaged door in a junkyard and swapping it out and not mentioning it to the insurance at all?

    Question about product insurance.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 09:29 PM PDT

First off, I live in the UK.

I'm buying a pair of reasonably expensive headphones.

The insurance pdf says that the insurance covers accidental breakdown, but does not cover intentional damage or damage as a result of not taking reasonable care of the product.

How would the insurer distinguish between accidental and intentional damage and what constitutes reasonable care?

    Thanks.

Builder's Risk Insurance... any adjustors out there?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:01 AM PDT

I develop/build homes in an east coast city. One of my projects recently went up in flames, still being investigated but potentially arson. I have a builder's risk insurance policy that covers the fire whether it's arson or not. I am looking for some advice on how to proceed as it is my first time with this type of claim and I don't want to miss anything. Any insurance adjustors or people with experience that can answer any questions?

I purchased a home for $1M and we completedpartial demo of the existing structure and had framing up to 3rd floor prior to the blaze. Policy covers materials and "cash value" of the existing structure just prior to the burn. Also has language of "materials, delivery, construction, and reasonable profit" when calculating the loss. I can provide more details as needed. Thanks in advance.

Help with health insurance plan selection with mental health coverage as an immigrant in Wisconsin

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 04:52 PM PDT

Hello, I am a 23 year old male and recently graduated grad school and got my first job in Milwaukee.

My employer provides health insurance from Anthem in Wisconsin.

    I make 65k a year gross.

I recently learned about HSA and 401k and everything related to it and it has me overwhelmed.

I'm currently in New York and have been going to therapy for a year that is covered by my University provided insurance. It expires later this month. Thankfully my copay so far was only $20 a session and I'd like it be similar to that number when I seek out a new therapist in Wisconsin.

How do I identify if my plan provides mental health coverage?

Also, I think that an HSA works better for me since if I end up paying a small copay for every session, it'll be about a thousand a year, and my provider provides only a high deductible plan with an HSA.

Honestly I know all of this sounds incoherent but this is my first time looking at insurance options.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Condo Claim Question

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 04:12 PM PDT

I've only had insurance 2 months, after living without for 3 years lucky for me I never had an issue. Finally after a fairly large flood in our building I decided I should get insurance as an owner and not rely on luck.

Now 2 months later and a backed up drain outside of my unit caused my AC unit (fan coil) to slowly drip water out. It ended up damaging the unit below me, and a small section of my laminate flooring (1 board).

My property manager came in, they want to take out the damaged piece tomorrow to prevent mold themselves. They suggested I claim the flooring on insurance, and get a payout for the full cost of the flooring repair (entire unit) and I can choose whether to replace all the flooring or try to match the flooring and just replace the one (not sure if that's even possible with click install laminate, but the piece is along the edge at least). Personally I can live with the one board damaged, but they are concerned with mold. A few years ago my dishwasher leaked and similar damage happened in the kitchen but I ran a dehumidifier for a week and most of the boards shrinks back to their normal size, I didn't involve the building since I knew it was my issue. Whether there is mold under there or not I don't know lol. I do not want to pay my $1000 deductible to replace the entire units flooring just because of the one board. I don't know if an insurance adjuster would put the value on the entire units flooring considering its one piece, or they would say it's on me because it's less than $1000 to replace the one board.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Drones and Small Businesses!

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:38 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I own a small video production company in Michigan. I recently became a part 107 licensed drone pilot, and have been looking into drone insurance. I currently already carry Hiscox general liability insurance for our business, and I'm noticing to get drone insurance I have to purchase a base policy before I can get my inflight insurance anyways. Has my small business insurance become redundant?

Will I get in trouble for not renewing my Medicaid?? (NJ)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:38 PM PDT

So I've had Medicaid for the last few years. I qualified as a college student since I was uninsured and I only made $200 every two weeks from my work study job. I started with this insurance back in the summer of 2017 and from my memory, I was asked to renew in 2018 but that was the last time I heard anything from my insurance.

In late 2019 I started a full time job and was offered insurance through the job but declined it. In my stupid 21 year old mind that doesn't understand how to adult I thought "Why pay for insurance when I get free government insurance!" So I declined the insurance.

Fast forward a few months and I realized that I haven't renewed my insurance in over a year and thought "Oh shit I lost my Medicaid and open enrollment for my state closed". At that point I just assumed I'm screwed for the rest of the year. I later learned that I somehow still have Medicaid and I'm now being asked to renew.

My issue is that I now make too much money to qualify for insurance and the enrollment period for insurance won't be open until the end of the year. I'm experiencing a lot of health issues and I really can't go without insurance right now. I don't want to take a service that I don't qualify for, but is it possible if I don't renew now I can just use the Medicaid until the end of year then apply for insurance through my job?? I know I should have done my research before, but I'm past that point now and just want to know what to do moving forward.

Looking for assistance finding insurance for an Infiniti as a 20 year old

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:40 AM PDT

I'm 20 years old and i recently financed a 2014 Infiniti Q50 and need to have full coverage on it. I currently have Allstate and i pay about $400 a month with them. They plan on cancelling my policy because i have not shown any proof of having insurance before because my mom never put me down as a driver on my other car to save money. I'm looking to find another insurance company that i will have to pay less than that a month or that might not need me to show proof of having insurance for the last year. I've had my license for almost 4 years now and have no tickets and no accidents. I live kind of out in the country to the north east of Atlanta.

    How to get into underwriting?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 05:12 AM PDT

I became familiar with underwriters because my wife and I keep getting turned down for a home loan because I have fluctuating income. I work in healthcare as an occupational therapist and get paid hourly. Anyways, I hate working in healthcare and want out. I have a masters degree and would love to find some sort of decent paying career that allows work from home and underwriting seems to fit the bill.

My question is what can i expect if i do take the internship? Im still pretty unsure of what i want to do when i graduate and i know that i don't want to work in software. I have been working in customer service since i was 15 (restaurants, retail, customer support). I want to know the different departments and roles of each so i can make a good decision on what department i want to intern for. Thanks!

Scratched someone's car, know nothing about insurance or cars :(

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:00 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

When I was parking in my apartment's garage, I accidentally scraped another car with mine. My friends told me to leave a note with my name and number, so I did. I unfortunately did not think to take a photo of the damage. I've been texting the owner of the car, but he doesn't seem to speak English very well and the messages don't make any sense to me or anyone else I ask.

I have car insurance, but it is under my parents' names, and I have a bad relationship with them. I don't want their rates to go up because of this and I want to handle this independently from them. I am trying to resolve this without involving insurance for that reason.

The owner of the scratched car told me that it would cost $450 to fix. The scratch was not deep and seemed to only need a bit of paint to fix, which from what I can tell shouldn't cost that much.

Does anyone know what I should do? I've asked for a receipt from the repair shop but the car owner does not seem to understand what I'm asking for. He calls me sometimes and honestly nothing he says makes sense to me and he hangs up after a minute.

I cannot get a clear answer from him whether he would be comfortable with me paying for the repair directly or if he feels we need to go through insurance. I got a call from his insurance company yesterday while I was at work, so I couldn't answer. He asks me for money but then also has his insurance company calling me. I could be wrong, but isn't it meant to be one of the other? Either I pay or my insurance pays for the damage, yes?

Thanks so much for reading this! I know it's long, I tried to bold important info to make it easier. I really don't know anything about this so I'd love any information you can give me. :)

Awful storm caused a bunch of wind and hail damage - insurance is covering but my roofing companies cheapest option is $250 more than my deductible?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:29 PM PDT

Like the title says, had a bad storm, found 7 shingles in the yard, 7 more on the roof.

Contacted my insurance and a roofing company, everything's worked to far, got approval, I have a $1k deductible.

The roofing company is trying to get me to pay around $250 on top of my deductible for their cheapest option. I don't understand how their cheapest option isn't what my insurance is willing to pay plus my $1k deductible.

Edit - NC, USA is the location.

Question on Homeowners coverage for father who recently passed

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:28 AM PDT

I'll keep it short. My father recently passed away and was unattended for 1-1.5 weeks. Needless to say between him being unattended and decomposing for that long and the dogs having accidents during that time (the dogs are okay now, no worries) the house is a mess and uninhabitable.

I made a claim on his insurance (HO3 policy) and they're saying that it is extremely unlikely they will cover any cleaning or repairs that need to be done. The adjuster said he would speak with his manager Friday and get back to me on Monday, but that it is highly likely they will not cover any cleaning services to return the house to habitable status.

I've read online extensively and called a few biohazard/restoration companies and it seems extremely common for homeowners insurance to cover this type of work. In fact, one of the companies I called had a rep say he's worked with my father's insurance company frequently (state-based insurance company that is commonly held where he lives) and never once seen a claim denied by them. A rep from another company said if it's an HO3 policy that claims are "extremely seldom denied" for that level of coverage.

I guess my question is, who do I believe? I feel the adjuster will do anything in his power to not have the insurance company pay money, even if it means telling me they won't cover it even if they should. Maybe I would need the cleaning company to go to bat for me and work on getting them to pay? I also feel the inverse is true where the cleaning companies will say insurance will cover it when they might not just to get more business. Everything I've research seems like they *should* cover it and the policy has an "any other peril not specifically excluded" clause that notes coverage up to the value of the home. I feel this would fall into that category, but I'm a CPA, not an insurance adjuster haha.

Any advice is appreciated. I can also answer any questions you guys may have for me that may help shed more light on the situation. I've never had to make an insurance claim before, so this is all new to me.

    Thanks!

Edit: Per request of the bot, adding info on my father's residence. It and the insurance company are located in Florida.

[Texas] Dad was in a car accident, officer said the other drive was at fault. Hospital has asked me to fill out some information with Sullins & Johnston who apparently figure out who pays for damages. Anything I need to know about them? Any positive or negative experiences with them?

    Should I file a claim?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:05 PM PDT

I've never had any issues with my g37 in the year + that I've had it. After the tropical storm blew through DC this morning, I got in my car and headed to the store. About 500 feet in to my drive, my car became possessed. I'm talking, flashers on and off, wipers at full speed, dash board flickering - the car went crazy. I turned around and made it home and the car wouldn't turn off. At all. After about 20 minutes I was able to turn it off. I did some research and found that it sounded like a computer failure and I was advised to check my passenger side floor for water. Sure enough, the passenger side floor is soaked (coming from under the carpet). It's important to note that my windows were up during the storm and the car was (to my knowledge) completely sealed and safe! Now I'm pretty sure I have a major electrical issue on my hands as a direct result of this storm. What do I do? Do I call my ins company and file a claim? I'm expecting repairs to be between $1-2k. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Will they pay — and Is this legal??

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 04:57 AM PDT

Ok, so weird situation but I'm trying to make the best of it. My AC condensate pump failed and neither of the alarm switches nor the emergency shutoff worked, bc the installers 3 years ago didn't caulk in the hole in the drain pan where the optional drain hose runs out if you have one (like if it's in the attic). So, the initial prob was a failed pump. But I didn't go down in my basement for 2 weeks and didn't realize my basement was flooding and molding. 😫 Do you think they'll cover drywall & the water/mold damage? It's a combo of appliance fail (covered) and bad install/me not paying Attn for 2 weeks (maybe not so covered). But also: initially thought this was a plumbing leak since my house is 35 years old. And bc the wall that holds all my pipes in the basement was drenched (apparently from condensation building up inside the wall void). Plumbers bashed into my basement wall that holds all my pipes but couldn't find a leak. However, now that the pipes are exposed it's evident they are rusted and corroded. Hard to say if they were already that way due to age, or due to up to 2 weeks of condensation. Anyway - the legal part. Assuming that insurance wouldn't pay to replace non-leaky pipes even if they were rusted by water from this incident (or might they??) — the plumber says he can replace all the pipes in my house with the awesome new Pex piping, for $4k. I am absolutely willing to pay that and just get it done as an add-on, before drywall is replaced. Otherwise, at some point I'll either have to do it in a remodel but will pay for demo labor and new drywall all over again, OR I'll have a huge plumbing emergency - which may oray not be covered due to age & condition of pipes. I would sleep so much better at night. But is that legal to do? I would think it would benefit the insurer by lessening the chance of pipe leaks and freezes. But God forbid anyone accuse me of fraud.

Secondary Q is: should I have my wiring checked in case any condensation damaged them? Would insurance cover replacement if it is damaged? And if not would it be ok if I also got as much rewiring done as I can in the bargain?

At-fault driver's insurance company says "strong possiblity we'll be unable to cover any damage"

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:33 PM PDT

A little over two weeks ago, I was in the driveway outside a restaurant in Irving Texas and another car backed up into my vehicle near the front door and wheel on the driver's side. She admitted her fault as soon as I got out of the vehicle and tried to call the cops. The cops just said to exchange insurance information and DL. She gave me her insurance information and DL. Regarding the damage, the driver's side door makes noise when opening because there's a noticeable dent near the hinges. The steering doesn't function properly because the other car hit my wheel so it might have caused alignment issues. The steering isn't straight anymore. There's also dent over the wheel on the side panel. Basically, the car is not drivable without risking another accident. Few days back, I asked their insurance company regarding the updates and they said "coverage is being reviewed." Today, I asked them again and they replied "while we have not yet made final determination, it appears coverage will be impacted – meaning there is a strong possibility we'll be unable to cover any damage related to this accident." They haven't made a final decision yet but their reply shows that it is very likely that they will deny the claim. I am a college student and cannot afford a new car as of now. I cannot afford to repair the vehicle on my own without the insurance paying for the damage. What are my options here? Is it worth getting a lawyer over such a minor accident? Should I contact a car accident attorney now or wait until they make a final decision? Also, if I wait what are my options if they deny the claim?

Stolen car found. What do I need to do?

I had a car stolen one March and received a letter in the mail from the state saying it's at a tow yard somewhere 300 miles away and is going to be auctioned unless I come claim it.

Insurance paid me for it and I bought a new car. I'm No longer with that insurance company (Geico) and don't have contact info for the adjuster. What are my duties here? I have no intention of claiming a car I don't actually own anymore and i worry they want me to be responsible for the storage fees etc.

Short Term Liability Coverage for Rental Car

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:22 PM PDT

    Hello All:

I have been having trouble reaching any local auto insurance brokers and I am uncertain if the product I am searching for is available in British Columbia, Canada

I do not own a car but I do rent cars on occasion. The $30/day damage waiver insurance was getting a bit much so I just bumped up my credit card (CC) to a travel card which includes damage waiver coverage. The CC does not include Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), but I can purchase that through the rental company for a smaller daily fee. What I am after is LIABILITY insurance as I understand that if I am involved in a crash I would be vulnerable to large expenses without it. I don't currently have renters insurance and thus don't have it included with that. I was wondering if it is possible to get access to a daily rate for a period of coverage matching my rental length.

    Any opinion is appreciated!

Can getting a body shop estimate increase insurance?

Is it true that insurance companies can find out if you've asked body shops for an estimate?

I recently went to a dealer body shop to get An estimate on my cracked windshield and for documentation purpose they noted my VIN.

Even though I never got the work done, when shopping around for new insurance quotes - they mentioned if I had windshield damage.

How the hell did they find out? I'm assuming this is what drove up my quote but how is this even legal?
