I graphed whether Reddit panics before the stock market does, or vice versa Posted: 27 Aug 2020 06:45 AM PDT So I did some quantitative sentiment analysis to see if News websites/Reddit/Twitter panics before the stock market does, or if the stock market panics before Reddit/Twitter does. I have written an algo determining (stock specific) sentiment, I ran this on a dataset with (financial) news headlines (about 900k headlines), Twitter headlines en (stock related) Reddit headlines. From that I compared sentiment to the SP500 and I compared the intensity and volume of negative headlines to the VIX. This resulted in the two plots shown. Since the plot is somewhat full, I made it interactive so one can show for example only Reddit sentiment and zoom in and out of datapoints. This is in html, but Im not sure whether its allowed to share the link here so in case one is interested to play around with it shoot me a pm. On request, interactive html is on: http://www.alternative-analytics.eu/dashboard/sentiment.html (just a plain clean html, no ads, links etc, base url also is not a general website), I update the graph daily. How to convince my SO that investing isn't as scary as it seems Posted: 27 Aug 2020 09:01 PM PDT Over the past year I have tried to convince my extremely frugal SO to begin diverting a small portion of her monthly income to an index fund instead of dumping it all in savings. Despite explaining the effects of inflation and how compounding interest works, she is still convinced that investing is still some sort of black box that can only be handled by a professional. Ultimately it is still her decision and I am not trying to turn her into the next Warren Buffet but how can I inform her that investing is extremely rewarding if done the right way. Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:09 PM PDT Hey everyone, I'm wondering if anyone can help explain to me why the big banks popped today after Jerome Powell's inflation speech. I figured his commitment to keeping interest rates near zero for the foreseeable future would be a bearish signal for the big banks moving forward. [link] [comments] |

CNBC: Walmart is teaming up with Microsoft on TikTok bid Posted: 27 Aug 2020 08:22 AM PDT Not much more detail on how this would even work: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/27/walmart-is-teaming-up-with-microsoft-on-tiktok-bid.html I'm sure most of its users won't care but if there's any way to remove the 'cool' factor from Tiktok, as if MSFT wasn't uncool enough Wal-Mart is another layer of uncool. Edit: WMT +5% for the day [link] [comments] |
How do you personally deal with missed opportunities? Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:02 PM PDT Maybe this is a question suited for some kind of therapist like Wendy Rhoades from Billions but would like to hear from you guys personally how you battle through this or not let it get to you at all mentally. You do all your research, due diligence and invest in things you understand and feel that there's fair valuation or great future outlook for a company, whatever it is. You feel like you're doing everything right, not gambling anything away, making a decent profit slowly but surely. You get friends/family asking you for advice but at the end of the day, they don't listen to what you have to say and end up throwing everything into a stock, most recent example would be Tesla. Market cap is larger than Walmart and climbing, up almost 100% since the announcement of a split and all it does is ignore logic and trucks on forward. All the time you've put in over the years learning stocks and whatnot and all of a sudden someone new who has no knowledge of anything related to finances decided to throw a bunch of money in and at the right time ends up being way ahead of you in profit/gains all in a few months. I start to wonder why didn't I do that and FOMO starts to build up making me want to me irrational moves. It makes me feel like a failure but at the end of the day I didn't lose any money... so I know I shouldn't feel this way but I can't help that it's in the back of mind. Any advice or tips Reddit? Cheers! [link] [comments] |
Examples of defining your risk profile and portfolio rebalancing criteria Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:02 AM PDT I have been investing in stocks periodically over the last two years and with price changes over time has realized the importance of rebalancing my portfolio. From my preliminary research, lot of guidance out there naturally talks about rebalancing criteria being dependent on the risk profile of the person. I would like to know some examples on how the r/investing hivemind defines the individual variables in calculating their risk profile - categorization of asset classes, definition of risk for an asset. Common examples I have read so far: 1. categorize as US stocks / international / bonds; define risk as % of total portfolio 2. categorize as individual stocks and holdings; define risk as market volatility of asset What are some other ways to think about risk profile? Here's what I've been thinking about my strategy: asset categorization as AAA, AA, A based on my view of risk of individual stocks and etfs, and defining % of total portfolio to each class. Would appreciate some feedback on this as well. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Today's spike in volatility (VIX), is it any cause for concern? Posted: 27 Aug 2020 03:00 PM PDT Today, the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) spiked above 27, reaching a six-week high. It's unusual for volatility to increase so much on a generally green day for markets. I suppose the increase came from Powell's speech today and the Fed's policy adjustments. Should we at all be concerned about this? [link] [comments] |
Tesla is nearing $2200 5 days away from the stock split - what's next ? Posted: 27 Aug 2020 06:52 AM PDT Tesla has the largest short bet against a stock in history at 25 billion. Willl Tesla bears be vindicated ? The primary issue here is that tesla may be worth 400B but not for a few years. Will the stock plummet following the split ? I hypothesize that some may be more comfortable taking some profit/principal. [link] [comments] |
Eli5: Why does the Fed want inflation above 2%? Posted: 27 Aug 2020 09:19 AM PDT I don't get it, I don't understand it, rising inflation and stagnant wages is only going to hurt the poorest no? I listened to a Planet Money (NPR) podcast a couple of months back and this 2% figure is picked out of thin air by the new Zealand central Bank and has been picked up in other countries as a target. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Where do you keep your emergency fund Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:47 AM PDT Given the job/family situation, I would like to keep 9-12 months of funds at hand. I currently have this sitting in cash in brokerage and savings accounts earning paltry interest below inflation. Looking to see what others are doing. The options as I see them are:
I'm thinking of allocating the emergency fund as 3 months expenses in cash, 3m in a CD ladder and 6m in bond fund. Does that sound prudent? Or should I eschew return for liquidity and low-risk? Another alternative is to get a HELOC to draw from and keep 6 months in cash. But HELOC I hear is not guaranteed liquidity and the bank can put a hold on it for personal credit, market conditions etc. when you may need it the most. Curious for your thoughts [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:33 AM PDT Hi to everyone from Italy, I started to invest in February 2019 and since then I am beating the SP500 which is my benchmark. I think, it is a good result given the fact the dollar has weakened in the last few months. I invested 125000 euros and now they are 162000 euros. Choosing to invest in Amazon has turned a good idea, since the position has grown 87%. My strategy is buy and hold, I know one year and half is too little to judge but what do you think of this results? My portfolio February 2019-now ( in euros): 32,60% Sp500 February 2019-now( in dollars): 25,61% Sorry for my mistakes [link] [comments] |
Should you adjust your portfolio allocation if you have a mortgage ? Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:18 AM PDT Suppose you are in a 50:50 Equity:Debt portfolio in your investment account, should your portfolio change if you take on a mortgage ? Opinion 1: Yes, you should increase the equity allocation to something like 80:20 since you're already "investing" in a bond(mortgage) which is giving you a return equal to your mortgage rate. Opinion 2: No. This is an investment into a consumption asset (you live in your home). Your investment account shouldn't be affected by what your mortgage looks like. Some opinion pieces say that investing while you have a mortgage is like taking a leveraged position. What is the opinion and concerns here ? [link] [comments] |
Vanguard to close Hong Kong offices. Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:09 AM PDT https://www.ft.com/content/ff29241a-def6-4c8e-86a6-910f591254b2 As an expat, this really sucks. They are one of the few viable options for low cost index investing in HK. Luckily I didn't put all of my eggs in one basket, but as a novice investor, what are the implications of an ETF delisting? Is it likely they would have another manager take over? Could the value of the ETFs drop below value of underlying asset? There are only 6 Vanguard products in HK, and I own three of them :( [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:57 PM PDT I've been watching this company for quite some time now. Looks pretty appealing to me. What do you guys think of this stock as a long term hold? I realize they almost doubled since March lows but I believe there is still room to grow. Okta has a very impressive list of customers, their CEO has been with the company since inception (2009) so I'm considering of taking advantage of a recent pullback. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:03 AM PDT Since it would double your gains from 8% to 16% a year. Or does the risk outweight the gains.(if the price drops by 50% everything is gone for good) I have lost more money over at r/Wallstreetbets then I'm willing to admit. So would this be feasible or should I just forget derivate ever existed? And buy a index fund monthly? [link] [comments] |
Why do different sites list such different ratios for a stocks performance? Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:27 PM PDT I was just doing my DD on AstraZeneca (looking like a pretty bad pick right now aside from the vaccine) and I can't help noticing all the sites have completely different stats. Macrotrends lists it's PE as 68.67 while other sites say in the low thirties or even high twenties. Macrotrends and others say about 1.69 for PEG while other places are saying higher than 10. What's going on here? Are they using slightly different metrics? And if so which site(s) should i listen to? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2020 11:04 PM PDT In general, I would like to find out how I can research more in non-English speaking countries. However, such convenient resources are not around, so it got me curious on how people found out some info on SE. What are some example ways to find some info on them? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2020 10:44 AM PDT Just got an email that Vanguard is discontinuing is famous Prime Money Market fund (VMMXX; Admiral: VMRXX) and converting it into the Cash Reserves Federal Money Market Fund, which will only hold government bonds (and equivalents like repos). The email cited the fact that the Prime fund had only slightly higher returns than the Federal (government only) Money Market fund, but at the cost of much higher volatility, especially in March. The minimum investment for lower-cost admiral shares will be lowered from $millions to $3000. This doesn't make much of a difference now, since short-term interest rates are pitiful -- 0.04 vs 0.10% for regular and admiral shares. I've been seriously considered converting to their Ultra Short Term Bond fund anyway(admiral: VUSFX), which actually has a meaningful yield and still only a small risk of loss. I didn't see this news submitted here already so I thought I'd share. Anything I should be aware of here? [link] [comments] |
Will the SEC block the Fidelity Bitcoin index fund? Posted: 27 Aug 2020 03:16 PM PDT I know that the current SEC chairman is quite hostile to cryptocurrency funds. Which lead me into question if Fidelity will actually be able to get SEC approval for their index fund. Anyone who is more knowledge in this matter want to share their opinion of how this might play out? Does the Fidelity fund have a shot because it is an index fund and not a ETF? Or will it be dead on arrival like the recent Bitcoin ETF applications? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2020 10:30 PM PDT I have an unused Roth IRA (0 balance since open) on vanguard. I have a Roth 401k on Fidelity (still working for that employer) Now i want to trade options in Roth IRA. But i want to avoid vanguard's options trading fee. Webull Roth IRA offers commission free options trading. Also, i also want to keep some ETF in my Roth IRA. So if i choose webull for my roth ira options trading, and also invest in some vanguard etf there, Will i be paying more fee on that etf? Compared to getting it directly on vanguard? Why is day trading stocks viewed as more risky than options trading? Posted: 27 Aug 2020 10:23 PM PDT Options trading seems extremely risky to me because of the fact that you have to gauge direction and the degree the price moves. Daytrading doesn't seem as risky because you essentially get to lock in profits earlier and also minimize losses earlier if you have unlimited daytrades. I understand the benefits of a long-term investing strategy and have retirement accounts invested in VOO/VTI/etc. but I'm considering trying daytrading stocks. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
