How I landed my largest international client. Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:58 AM PDT I want to share some behind the scenes how I landed one of my first big overseas deals. All the messages below are original. To begin with some background, I run a web design and development studio in Poland. Last year I applied to a contract job on Angel List. I wrote a straightforward and generic message:
I was pretty surprised that three days later, I got a reply with a video chat proposal. It went ok; we agreed to do a paid trial project. Now, here is the twist. I sent our contracts using HelloSign (Master Services Agreement and Statement of Work), got the first one signed right away, the latter never got back to me. I wrote like ten email follow-ups for the next 14 days, never got a reply. Weird. Would that mean the collaboration is no longer valid? Why hadn't I heard back from them? In a desperate act, I decided to browse LinkedIn to find the Company's CEO (My hiring contact was VP of Product). I sent an invite, got accepted and followed with that message:
Now, guess what. I never heard from the CEO either. But magically, the missing part of the contract landed in my inbox the next day. Signed. From that day on, our tiny initial contract has grown into a long-term business relationship. This company is one of our largest international clients. Lessons here

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:44 PM PDT Hi Reddit, I'm Kristy Kim, the CEO of TomoCredit, and we are creating the credit card of tomorrow with no fees, no interest rates, and no credit history required. Our underwriting system focuses on analyzing cash flows and alternative data sets to approve individuals for our card. You can check us out here if you're interested. When I graduated college with a full-time investment banking role in San Francisco, I got rejected 5 times for a car loan and could not rent an apartment because I had no credit history. Moving forward, I realized that I was not alone in this situation. Over 30 million students or recent graduates have purchasing power with low or no credit scores. Millions of deserving Americans, especially millennials, cannot access affordable necessities- auto loans, mortgage rates, insurance, and more because of lack of credit history and knowledge of the U.S. credit system. Understanding this, I decided to build a new type of credit card that doesn't rely on the old outdated credit score model. Fast forward a few years and now TomoCredit is part of Barclays accelerator in NYC, we've been featured on Forbes, American Banker, and more! We have over 20,000 on the wait list and expect to launch in August. I'm always open for discussion about startups, how to raise money, work-life balance, where to start, entrepreneurship, successes & failures, credit building, etc. Ask me anything! Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:54 PM PDT Hello everyone, I'm a VP Sales for a large firm and have developed cold out reach skills over the last 11 years which led to $60M in revenue generated for 6 different firms. I am launching a tech which helps small (less than 20 employees) firms take control of their growth without depending on anything or any one. I'd happily "consult" or help anyone looking to grow their sales efforts (2h x 2 sessions) in exchange for some feedback on the tech we're building. Hit me up if interested! [link] [comments] |

Built a mobile game during quarantine while in NYC - would love to hear any thoughts! Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:38 AM PDT hey /r/entrepreneur! so...coronavirus happened...awkward. I ended up building a mobile game while quarantine was in full swing and ended up publishing it on the App Store and play store! here it is: iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1518415366 android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kingfisher.game1 feel free to hit me up in the comments or through message if you have questions about how I pulled it off! but in a nutshell, I: a. spend a year or so learning how to build cross platform apps in Flutter b. state of New York put in place a stay at home mandate for nonessential workers (me) c. boredom kicked in d. dusted off the computer and got to work! e. published it (was super buggy to begin with but then I collected some feedback from friends and got rid of the most pressing things) and here I am. since this is /r/entrepreneur, the game is not bringing in any money for me. I did put ads into the app, but accidentally tested the live ad in my app. apparently per Google that's a big "no no" and they suspended my ability to serve ads for 30 days. oh well. ads will come back eventually but I am not too worried about it - mainly wanted to build the thing to provide a very casual, low-commitment, easy to play game that you can fire up on the fly. so there you have it! again feel free to give me a shout if you have any questions of how I built it, or whatever you like - happy to help! Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:10 PM PDT I just wanted to share that after spending a couple of decades building software for other businesses, today I gave my employer a two week notice so that I could focus full-time on my own startup. I've been working with another co-founder since last year. We have great traction and raised just enough capital for me to eat rice and beans for the next few months while I rebuild our prototype into something that can really go to market. So it begins! Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:48 AM PDT Hi everyone, In a world where authors find it hard to live by selling their books, my childhood friend and I created the startup 'Neovel' to approach this issue though a different way. To show you how it's hard nowadays to make a living: By using a normal publishing house, writers get only 5-8% of the book cost. What about online stores ? Amazon takes 30 to 70%! We, in Neovel, choose to give 50% of the premium & ads benefits to the authors each month. The redistribution rule is chapters count read per author / total chapters read (per month). The premium is not mandatory to read our books but is used by the readers to support the authors & get useful features (offline, customization, etc.) Could you please tell me what do you think about this ? You can find more information through images on our active crowdfunding campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thibaud-okroglic/neovel-your-daily-novels Sincerely, Thibault [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:27 AM PDT I'm a college student with an affinity for fountain pens. I found a warehouse where I can get very nice pens for cheap, now I'll just trying to figure out how to put them on the market because this whole eBay thing isn't working at all. I have about 200 in stock right now. Do I make a website? If I do make a website how do I market it? Do I cold call? Do I sell to local businesses? I'm just trying to get this small investment out of my storage and into customers hands. I'm confident that the pens are of high quality and will sell quickly for honest prices. [link] [comments] |

Starting a kitchen/cabinet design center. Posted: 08 Jul 2020 02:03 PM PDT My wife and I are currently working on the written business plan for an investor. This will be a startup business. However we have no idea where to start or what to put into this business plan as we've never done this before. Ive seen templates online and they seem like a good base but I'd rather talk to real people. Where do we even begin besides a business name? Figuring out margins and what it'll cost. Its all so very overwhelming. We have the drive to do it, just looking for a little guidance in the right direction. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:59 PM PDT Recently I have been doing some research in the telemedicine industry and have realized a few things... The margins can be massive. It's severely underserved. It's fractioned by both region and carrier. It lacks any sort of innovation. I have run the numbers on a way to disrupt the market and they look great. But I have no clue how to get in front of someone that could finance it? I am paycheck to paycheck in today's market and as much as I would want to I can't finance something like this. Is it a matter of contacting every vc I can find with an outline of my idea and asking for a meeting? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Idea: an app that connects you with a lawyer in real time when dealing with the police Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:12 AM PDT This just popped into my head. Does this sound remotely feasible? In light of everything that's happened recently, I had an idea for an app to be used by people who have been stopped / pulled over by the police to ensure their rights are protected. When you are stopped, you activate the app, which connects you with a lawyer, who will standby and listen to the interaction with the police. They can jump in to advise the person on questions they are or are not legally obligated to answer, the legality of searches, etc. The interaction would be recorded as well as an additional safeguard. A major hurdle would be having a large enough network of attorneys willing and able to respond to incidents in real time. Though, with the ever-rising cost of law school, and the ugly job market, there's likely a surplus of attorneys looking for extra money. (If you know of the app Talkspace, it's a pretty similar conundrum). There may also be a legal hurdle I'm unaware of liability-wise or something else. Another is monetizing it - I suspect the people who need something like this the most would not be able to afford a fee to have this service available. Do you guys have any other thoughts / feedback? Any reasons why this idea is DOA? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:18 AM PDT The business model is advertisement based and the platform will be making money through advertisements. Creators will be paid based on the number of ads they have on their post and their web traffic. I'd like some feedback on if this is something that you would use. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:56 PM PDT https://muchkler.github.io/startup-growth/index.html I've created a newsletter to see whether this is something people would enjoy or not - basically curating resources from SEO to Design to help you grow your online startup. This would include tools, blogs, case studies, etc. Is this something you would find useful? Thanks for your time! [link] [comments] |

Any one have experience with Northwest vs legalZoom for LLC? Posted: 08 Jul 2020 11:38 AM PDT Hi so awhile back there was a really nice article here on LLC formation. The author actually recommend Northwest over legal zoom and I believe him because his explanation was clear to the point. Posted: 08 Jul 2020 11:16 AM PDT I have used Stripe and Paypal in the past. I have seen brick and mortar businesses use credit card processing machines obtained from local payment processors. Square is an active actor. But it can often be a hassle to run after clients and customers to get paid if you offer a service. Sometimes, it takes time to set up Stripe on your website. There are a lot of issues. What do you use and what issues have you run into if any ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:59 AM PDT Hey all! I launched a free platform in May that inspires young individuals to pursue their entrepreneurial interests rather than follow the 9-5 route through the support of our blog, podcast, Facebook group, and resource hub. I want to find people who would want to write blogs for the site relating to any entrepreneurship topic--marketing, finance, mindset, etc.--but I'm having a hard time getting guest bloggers outside of people in my network. I've promoted the opportunity on social media (especially Twitter) and include a contact form on my website, but is there anything else I can do to get more interest? I don't qualify for sending opportunities through HARO yet because my Alexa ranking isn't at the right number. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Fired our largest client this week, walking confidently into the dark Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:41 AM PDT I run a consulting firm doing software development, currently with a staff of 7. I let us get massively over-concentrated in a single account. They bought a huge volume, we gave them very leveraged pricing to make that happen and the plan was to use that gravity to slingshot growth. What I didn't count on was how toxic this client would be and that I'd be spending at least half my time managing them. They refused to work within the boundaries of our processes, and refused to work with the team they were assigned, instead always opting to bring things to the CEO, me. Meanwhile, they treated our staff like trash and everyone is burning out. They took credit for every win and abdicated responsibility for any failure onto us. COVID came around and ate the world and our sales pipeline went in the shitter. We ended up in a place where we couldn't afford to lose them but we could only barely afford to keep them. I had to beg for our money every month when they paid late just so we could make payroll. Every check came with more demands, more concessions. We pushed back as much as possible to keep from ceding too much ground, but that just meant our time that should have been spent working on the business was spent on strategizing communication, figuring out how to work better with them without compromising our processes and culture. They backed out of their term engagement 4 months early, complaining we weren't worth the money and they wanted to cut spend. They requested a renegotiated contract with reduced staffing to cut spend. I saw an opportunity here to free up some of my capacity for other work and raise the unit price on the remaining services back to our list rates so that at least the work was more profitable per unit. This would give us a transition path out that didn't sacrifice most of our revenue at once. Toxicity came to a head in that negotiation and I finally had enough. I fired their asses on Monday, to their complete shock. They had negotiated termination for convenience on 10 days notice into our contract--which I required to be mutual, and I used it. We've got until Thursday and then our revenues drop to about 20% of where they were. We are fortunate to have been able to sit on some PPP money, and I've got 2 months to figure it out before I have to start cutting staff that we've spent years developing. And you know what? I'm fucking stoked. The weight of the world is off my shoulders. The team is motivated, we know we've got a huge challenge in front of us. Sales cycles are typically 6 months, and we've only got 1-2 potential opportunities in front of us that aren't very far along. We're gonna get scrappy, find new ways of engaging that shorten our sales cycles. We're working on establishing a more narrow position that will be foundation of a proper sales and lead generation system. We've outlined the attributes of what makes a great client for our firm. Clients we can love and who will love us back. I don't really have a question, just sharing our story. We're walking confidently into the dark. If I'm going to lose sleep over the next couple of months its going to be over my business and my opportunities, not someone else's. [link] [comments] |
