    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Jul 02, 2020

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Tesla stock price target boosted to $2,000 by Wedbush, making it the highest among FactSet analysts

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives raised his stock price target for Telsa Inc. to $2,000 from $1,250 on Friday, making it the highest among analysts on FactSet. "We believe with demand for Model 3's ramping stronger than expectations in China heading into the summer timeframe, the lockdown easing in the US/Europe, and some potentially "game changing" battery developments on the horizon (Battery Day another key catalyst) that Tesla's stock likely has room to run further," Ives wrote in a note to clients.

Encouragement for those FOMOing on certain trades

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:01 PM PDT

    DONT FOMO!!!

Its a toxic mindset that will eat you up from the inside out. I know its hard not to.. but be solid with what you're trading already, your strategies, and with your goal in mind. There will always be room in the market to make the same trades so keep your head high, research, and continue on investing!

P.S. You can clearly tell I'm telling this to myself since I fomo'ed hard this morning

US jobs increase by 4.8 million in June, vs 2.9 million estimate; unemployment rate at 11.1%

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:33 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/02/jobs-report-june-2020.html

Nonfarm payrolls jumped by 4.8 million in June and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1% as the U.S. continued its reopening from the coronavirus pandemic, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting a 2.9 million increase and a jobless rate of 12.4%. The report was released a day earlier than usual due to the July Fourth U.S. holiday.

The numbers capture the move by all 50 states to get activity moving again after the virus seized up much of the U.S., particularly service-related industries.

However, because the government survey comes from the middle of the month, it does not account for the suspension or rollbacks in regions hit by a resurgence in coronavirus cases.

The unemployment rate also likely is understated due to counting errors at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Workers who still have jobs but have not been working are being counted as employed and even though as supposed to be considered unemployed under BLS rules.

Will Black Out Day be similar to Juneteenth?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:56 PM PDT

As the title states, I want to know if you think July 7th will be similar to June 19th. I saw a ridiculous pump of few stocks. Today alone a penny stock saw a 30% increase. I want to discuss any tickers that you have come across and where you bought in. I plan on making a decision based off some discussion with the sub who knows a little more than I do. I've seen some comments mentioning $UBSI. Please add more and let me know if these are legitimate or pump & dumps.

    Buy SE stock! (Sea Limited)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 10:43 AM PDT

Sea Limited is like the Amazon of the eastern market - Singapore based company and they own Shoppee which is an online marketplace. They are also making a killing in the mobile games market with a title called Free Fire which is like one of the most downloaded apps.

I bought SE back when it was in the $30s and the thing just keeps going up. This is going to be many hundreds of dollars per share for sure. They are making more and more money and their revenue is stronger every quarter.

Nikola Motors is a scam, avoid!

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:52 AM PDT

This is why Nikola Motors is a classic scam:

    • Brand name intended to be too similar to a successful brand "Tesla" (stole the first name instead) , typical of lazy scams to have names similar or copy of another successful company to steal their hype rather than be original.

    • has been around for a while no real product, funds mostly used for paying ceo and his cronies hefty salaries.

    • watch him on CNBC, just look at his face alone has all signs of a scammer, he is a talk no action, has no real idea of the business and industry.

    Avoid this stock

PLUG up another 8% in after hours trading- is it all hype?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:38 AM PDT

PLUG is up another 8% in after hours trading for a total of 16% since yesterday and almost 30% for the last week. Do you guys think these gains are driven by real promise or is it primarily hype and a whole lot of Robinhooders propping it up? The news of their two recent acquisitions are clearly part of the reason. As is their upgraded target price. In your opinion, is their current stock price warranted? Or is it likely to settle a bit lower?

What's the Deal with PLUG Power Anyway?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 03:46 PM PDT

If you want to know why Plug Power is an important player in today's landscape, then you have to take a little history lesson in the car industry.

Back in 1979, BMW introduced the 520h based off of the E12 sedan. Same chassis, but it was modified with a cryogenic liquid hydrogen tank on the vehicle. Without going too much into the weeds on the cars, since most of you are only interated in why PLUG is relevant, we'll just say that BMW continued to experiment with concept cars in 2005 and 2007 that had engines modified to run liquid hydrogen , and later introduced the hydrogen fuel cell from a modified i8 chassis. They have experience in hydrogen powered vehicles, and while many laud Toyota as a boon for the technology, BMW has made significant investments in this direction as well.

Flash forward to last week. California Ushers in Electrifying New Era in Trucks

"Today, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) voted to approve the first-ever mandate for electric commercial trucks. Between 2024 and 2035, the Advanced Clean Trucks Program will transition 75% of delivery trucks and vans, 55% of smaller trucks like the Ford F250, and 40% of the larger, semi tractors sold in the state to zero emission trucks."

Three companies made up 46% of the global hydrogen market share in 2015 according to this analysis on the hydrogen market in 2019: https://reports.valuates.com/market-reports/QYRE-Auto-26E44/global-hydrogen-fuel-cells

To save you a click, those 3 companies are Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLDP) 17.36%, Toshiba 16.68%, and Plug Power 11.93%. Now understand that Plug Power has made some ambitious moves in execution of a 5 year plan so far.

It picked up steam in 2015 making the Food Logistics 2015 FL100+ for the second consecutive year. But that wasn't the important part. They entered the market providing:

    GenDrive fuel cell units

    GenFuel hydrogen and fueling infrastructure

    GenCare service and aftermarket support

Plug Power can attribute the expansion of its serviceable market to improvements made within the GenFuel product suite. Previously, Plug Power customers typically saw positive economic value with large-scale lift truck fleets, upwards of 50 trucks. Additionally, Plug Power's innovative GenCare service now allows for remote monitoring of GenDrive and GenFuel systems, enabling real time data processing. As a result, Plug Power customer lift truck fleet performance continues to improve, now averaging out at 98% uptime. Now, due to technology improvements and streamlined supply chain management within the GenDrive, GenFuel and GenCare product lines, Plug Power customers with as few as 20 lift and reach trucks are able to achieve positive payback.

Now more recently in 2020: It has launched it's Heavy Duty ProGen Hydrogen Engine, for example.

More recently than this, it was probably this report of it's completed acquisition of United Hydrogen and Giner ELX, and it's upward adjusted guidance that sent the stock skyward.

These activities further enhance Plug Power's position in the hydrogen industry with capabilities in generation, liquefaction and distribution of hydrogen fuel complementing its industry-leading position in the design, construction, and operation of customer-facing hydrogen fueling stations. These activities establish a clear pathway for Plug Power to transition from low-carbon to zero-carbon hydrogen solutions.

How does that fit into the current car landscape? While it is economical for electric vehicles on the road that only drive short distances and park for long period to work with EV technology, it is not economical for vehicles with long trip times, that require significantly more torque to carry their loads. If the charge time on a Tesla is ~3 hours, if you can fill a tank in 3 minutes, on a 600 mile journey, assuming both have a 400 mile range, gives you ~10.2hours on hydrogen compared to ~13 for an electric vehicle.

As companies notice the logistical challenges posed by long distance electric, they will seek ready stop-gap or even complementary technologies. Plug Power helps to fill the gap in demand, and distance. If they can successfully ingratiate themselves into the the supply chain of mote companies, they will position themselves as a future leader in a fast growing industry.

That's my take on why Plug Power, you may have a different assessment, I welcome opposing opinions, but I think there is a strong body of research pointing to the success and viability of hydrogen technology alongside EVs albeit being less efficient in their return. It's still much better than Internal Combustion Engines.

That's why I think Plug Power is a good future growth stock pick should they continhe to execute in their plans.

How do I know when to sell? General investment advice?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:30 PM PDT

Hey everyone! Thanks for your help!

I've been dabbling in the market since March. I'm 22, just graduated college and am starting med school in a year. I've been doing some small investing ($2k total). Most of my money is in VOO (bought the COVID dip, so a nice 15% return so far), a little VGT and around 20 shares of INO.

    Two main questions:
    1) I've made some nice returns on some of my investments (and had some shorts that I learned from...). How do I know when to sell? Obviously I don't need these at the moment (or else I wouldnt invest them) but I have to sell at some point to be worth it. When is that?
    2) What general strategies would you suggest? I plan to invest only a little more over the next year, none during med school and let my money grow and then get back into it with larger sums when I'm a doctor. What should I invest in? Just general indices?

Is cynicism overdone by market participants?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:53 PM PDT

I apologize in advance: this post will be less about stocks, and more about the politics of monetary and fiscal policy.

Every business news article I read, I encounter some smart-ass comments about how everything is a bubble, printing money out of thin air, printers go brrr (alright guys, that meme was funny in March...), how the companies that ought to have gone bankrupt are surviving, etc. A lot of market participants, retail and otherwise, give full vent to these sentiments even as they profit from the abrupt market recovery of Q2.

It's all getting a little grating now. I feel like shouting "WE KNOW!". More importantly, what alternatives do they suggest? To the best of my knowledge, the Fed and the Treasury Department's extremely prompt, extremely large-scale accommodative policies have saved millions from financial destitution. Possibly tens of millions across the world. If we are going to do QE and helicopter money, we might as well do it sooner rather than later, and that's what we did. More importantly, this time helicopter money is going into the hands of citizens as well, and not just the companies.

None of this situation is ideal. And I certainly don't express any sentiment whatsoever on whether current equity prices are justified (they are probably a little frothy). But did we have any other choice? Were we really going to keep working, as if nothing had happened, and have this disease wipe out millions? Or were we going to shut people in their homes for weeks without any compensation? And were we really going to let liquidity dry up in markets, and cause mass bankruptcy? Obviously fucking not.

If anything, we should be glad that at least one arm of the US government actually did its job during the pandemic, and gave the American people some wherewithal to fight this pandemic. Now, these United States of America happens to be doing a shit-poor job at the actual fighting of the pandemic part, but that is a story for another time...

New to the Markets with lots of Questions

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 02:15 PM PDT

Hi coming back and have lots of questions that will help me decide whether investing in financial markets suitable for me and also for a lot of beginners out there reading this thread and thinking of investing/trading:

Penny stocks are cheap and only available for new startup companies but are the highest risks in the stock markets when volume/liquidity dries up but can possibly offer the most rewards and equity ownership of a company if things turn good?

Bonds are only good investments if Interest rates are high? What happens on negative interest rates? Is bonds buying Government debt?

The best real economy indicators of a country is GDP and Unemployment numbers? Why is it that stock markets dont always reflect this?

Is DCA Dollar Cost Averaging just putting a bit of your salary/wages every month/week into the stock market regardless of share price and regardless of bull and bear markets?

How do you compound your investments over decades? Is it through dividends and interest only? If dividends then what happens when your stock portfolio crashes after decades of holding so how it compounds on losses?

Which best non affiliated website allows me to find good companies and their share prices at fair prices below intrinsic value? What search filters I use for this? Which is more important PE Ratio or EPS when making a investment decision? How do I find shares that are undervalued?

Warren Buffet said dont sell shares unless company changes, did he mean sell if company is bought by another company or company is under new management or company changes its product/service/brand/image/logo?

How do I find out total supply of shares offered from a company from their initial IPO? If a company increases supply of their shares after IPO then does that reduce my equity/ownership of a company or devalue my existing share holdings?

If a company offers fractional shares then is that a good indicator because it attracts poorer investors to get a slice of the company pie which means more volume right?

Does a shareholder who has low amount of shares gets invited to shareholder meetings or gets like staff discounts/freebies of that company? For example if I buy 10 mcdonalds shares at $1 each but Im entitled to a free big mac meal token once a week, every week as long im holding their shares? Is it possible to get both freebies/discounts & dividends payouts?

Dividends, will I lose dividend if I sell my share a day before dividend payout date, also are dividends yields paid on share price that I bought at or calculated on whatever the market daily price of that share is?

Which best website that has no affiliation with companies offers good fundamental analysis of companies and also shows red flags/scandals of a company before tv news shows it? To look at companies financial statements & annual reports, which site is best that offers this information that has no affiliation with companies so due diligence can be done? So I am to look at the Total revenue on a company income statement to see if its increasing quarterly or yearly? Also I gotta look at a company debts/liabilities and as long debts are below company assets value then that is good? Finally how do I know theres good Cash flow in a company?

If I buy a ETF shares will it show the individual share or shares from what companies the ETF basket holds and do I get same rights as a direct shareholder like having equity ownership of a company & getting dividends? Also for example if I buy ETF that tracks FTSE 100 then that means if FTSE 100 crashes like it did with the corona virus black swan event back in march then my ETF investment has gone down losing my capital?

Finally which is best most reliable stock chart pattern indicator for long term fundamental analysis to go long on a stock/share or ETF and which is the best for short term day trading on going long too?

    • Trend-lines
    • Channels
    • Support and Resistance lines
    • Head & Shoulders
    • Reverse Head & Shoulders

I haven't mentioned shorting stocks/shares or going short or margin trading/leverage trading as I believe this is borrowing other peoples money to trade but really risky if markets go against you so I leave this out for beginners as you can go into minus - debt balance for this which is worse than losing your capital to 0.

Anything else important that I missed out on?
