I’m young, have no experience, and I’m nervous about a saturated market!!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:02 PM PDT

I'm 18 and just graduated high school. I want to make a bipartisan political news website but who doesn't? From what I can tell, online news is a saturated market. Everyone wants to make their own newspaper. Is it even worth it to try? I'm enlisting in the Air Force so I need it to be online and not paper, but I keep putting off creating the website because I think it'll just flop. Am I overthinking this or is it genuinely a good idea to just stop before I go to far into it and fail? I've never started a business before and going into the military makes me think that I won't really have the time for it. I could wait until I'm out of the service but why put off for four years what I could start today? Any advice at all is greatly appreciated!

Learn to code or website creator?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 03:32 AM PDT

Right now I'm divided on whether I should learn Python and Java to create my own website with a payment portal or just use the countless website creators out there like Wix and Wordpress. The latter would definitely cost less time and less money considering the learning curve and server costs. For any start-ups here that have their own website currently, how did you go about it?

Is VC fundraising in exchange for equity considered a partial sale of the company?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:49 PM PDT

TLDR: I was employee at a startup that gave me equity and secretively clawed it back then fired me few months later. Is the law around "sale of company" established to be a full sale of company or can it be a partial sale (e.g. equity to VCs)? Can I effectively pursue legal action against the startup?

I've worked at the startup before they had major traction and had equity as part of the my compensation with a 4 year vesting period. After my equity has fully vested and before the company publicly announced a major round of VC fundraising (first round ever), the company asked me to sign a new agreement without any equity. I was sent the a new employment contract at 9am and was asked to sign it by 5pm during a busy work day. I didn't have enough time to carefully review its terms or seek advice of counsel. Few months later, the startup fired me, so I curiously reviewed my 2 employment and noticed that the equity clause was missing from the new agreement, thus sparking this question.

Under the old employment contract, the terms of the equity were that I had to be a full-time employee at the time of "sale of company". Does partial sale of company (e.g. equity) to VCs count as "sale of company" and thus trigger a bonus for me?

Please ask clarifying questions if you need more details before providing an answer. I greatly appreciate your advice.

Apologies if I chose the wrong flair. Mods, please adjust accordingly.

No, 2020 isn't over yet. Here we're in the second half of 2020

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 03:55 AM PDT

You're reading this means we should be grateful for being safe and in good health and also take away some important lessons we learned.

    What lessons?

    1. Nature: we need to take care of our planet by doing our bit, be it a plastic issue or a disease like Corona.

    2. Hygiene: Keeping a check on what we consume and focusing on improving our immunity. Devoting at least 30-40 mins a day, for exercise, yoga, and meditation.

    3. Mental health: Often ignored, but is the sole reason for almost 90% of our life issues.

    4. Savings: How "bad investments" and "nice to have materialized things/liabilities" can drag us back to square 1.

    Last, but not least,

    1. The importance of continuous learning, up-skilling, and re-skilling: It doesn't just add value but will make us irreplaceable.

2020 marks the beginning of a whole new era. It showed us how resilient we're individually or at the company level.

So, make the most out of the next six months because "No, whole 2020 is not going to be the same"

Every crisis brings along opportunities in some or other way. Be grateful, help others, and let's bounce back stronger with these takeaways

I pray we all have a Happy, Healthy, Peaceful, and an opportunistic year ahead.

    Be grateful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GtuZSuKEvc

Help understanding my new business (UK)

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:08 AM PDT

    Hello,

So I am building a Minecraft server, and I know maybe it seems a bit weird to setup a private limited company via companieshouse for this. However, some of these servers make ridiculous amounts of money. And I have put in a lot of work, e.g. writing code for my own custom plugins etc. So while I am not expecting to make a huge amount of money from this (via donations), it is at least a possibility.

As such, I wanted to set it up properly and legally. Also as a learning tool since I'm 19. So anyway, I have setup a limited company. What I would like advice on is just... what do I do now?

I have applied for a Starling business bank account, which I believe I can link with QuickBooks/Xero/FreeAgent in order to submit whatever I need to submit to the government. To be honest with you, I have no idea what I need to submit or when. I'm not sure if it's worth paying for these for a small business like mine, or if I should just fill it in myself.

Additionally, since my Starling account has not been approved yet, I have paid for some things with my personal bank account such as web hosting. What should I do about that?

Also, are there any procedures I need to follow for moving money into / out of the business bank account (from/to my personal account).

Sorry, I know these are super basic questions but I am just very confused.

    Thanks.

    EU VAT Question.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 03:21 AM PDT

    Hello,

So, I am a freelancer (based in the EU) that develop websites for local businesses. I was just thinking, how would I go about charging VAT, on the invoice, if I have a client overseas (in the EU and outside).

    - Do I charge my countries VAT?

    - Do I charge their countries VAT?

    - Do I event charge VAT?

I know this might be an obvious question, but I am really unsure about it haha.

    Thanks for your answers :)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 03:02 AM PDT

I was having a job and then moved out as an Entrepreneur and now own a successful business. I am also starting up with my own digital products and I usually tend to work 14+ hours.

Now it seems that this is eating me up and I need to take some time out for myself. What are your thoughts? How do you manage?

Can an app startup work if I hate coding?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:21 PM PDT

I have an idea for an app that I really want to bring to fruition. Problem is I hate coding--I've tried it and I just can't seem to get it. I love most STEM subjects but there's something about coding that just can't click for me.

But I've done coding challenges with my teams before and loved the other aspects, from brainstorming app ideas to drawing out how the app will function to writing up the business plan to creating a presentation to making the pitch, etc.

My question is this: I'm a poor 19 year old college student whose concentration has nothing to do with coding or tech. Do I have a chance at making this app (and give it the best chance at being successful) if I don't code?

Product Developer Consultant Cost for a Startup for Manufacturing Personal Care Products (Shampoo, Soaps, Body Wash, etc)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:53 AM PDT

Hello, I'm helping a family friend beginning a startup company to manufacture personal care products, and unfortunately they have no experience on chemistry/manufacturing and will be mainly on the marketing side of things. What's a reasonable rate to hire a consultant to help out with developing the products/formulas? For context, the target price point of the products is at a mid tier, with mid to high level consumers as the target (say 5-7.50 USD for a 350ml bottle of liquid soap, etc). Target turnover is hopefully around 5000 USD a month once we've smoothened out operations.

What are some of the terminologies for people working on the startup before it gets any funding?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:29 PM PDT

For example, there is the "founder" of the company or startup. But what what do you call the other workers that aren't founders but will eventually be getting a percentage ownership eventually when the company raises capital? These workers put in their time and might even buy items to help build the project... but they aren't founders. Eventually, if the project is able to get funding, those workers might get about $2k to $10k worth of ownership in the company.

Tips on how to get work as a developer at startups?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:23 PM PDT

Hello, I'm a software developer with no much experience, I have 2 years and I'm from Brazil. Has been some time since I started to look for some remote jobs at startups or companies.

I have looked in sites like angel.co, stackoverflow jobs, glassdoor, etc. But I don't know why I can't get any answers, nor can I do any interviews.

I'm not the best developer in the world but i can develop robust applications for mobile and frontend, and even then i can't get any remote work at these startups.
What can I do for increase my chances to get jobs like that?

Got an SAAS idea, don’t know what type of coding language I should use.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:35 PM PDT

I've had this idea for a while now and as it involves my industry, I can notice that there is significant demand for this service. For context, it will be similar to craigslist or eBay, it will connect buyers to sellers.

I have learnt very basic HMTL, CSS and decided to skip JavaScript and jump right into Python. I've been recommended Python numerous times so I decided to start practicing and looking up courses yesterday. I don't know too much on Python but am I on the right track? Is Python necessary for building a service similar to Craigslist or eBay? Tips or advice?

How bad is it not to have legal stuff and TOS on my mvp?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:57 AM PDT

Hi guys, I am soon launching a tool that helps Amazon sellers use text marketing.

This is a very regulated and controversial topic, and I believe that I need to hire a lawyer to write up my TOS and legal policies, which may be super expensive. I have the ability to pay this amount, but I am not sure whether the product is going to be well received or just a total failure. How bad will it be to launch the mvp and add the legal stuff later on?

Any suggestions on how to receive PUA, UE, and/or COVID relief grants?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:33 AM PDT

I'm a recent grad (M.Eng), launched my startup pre-COVID in Oct. 2019. I had paid beta testing LOIs pulled off the table because of COVID and now I'm running out of money.

I'm having a hard time understanding small business eligibility for unemployment - I'm technically not a paid employee of my own company. I'm also pre-revenue so the grants may be out of the question too.

Has anyone else found themselves in this gray area? Has anyone found any solutions? First time poster in this sub and I found it out of desperation honestly. Thank you in advance.

What is the assumption for Conversion Rate too?

Can USA residents/citizens invest in startups outside of the USA?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:13 AM PDT

I know the JOBS Act has allowed non-accredited investors to invest in startups via American crowdfunding websites, but are they allowed to invest in non-American startups via non-American websites?

It seems that America goes out of its way to make it difficult for its citizens to take their money out of the country.

    Thanks in advance!

Need suggestions about equity split between founders for a SaaS product

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:45 AM PDT

    Hi,

    I have a question about founder equity-split.

3 months back, me and one of my acquaintance started working on a SaaS idea. It was mostly an already existing idea (a knowledge-base system) but my cofounder convinced me that it's still worth building because he knows there are potential customers and it might be a good way to get started with SaaS in general.

So I took care of all-things-tech and put up an MVP in roughly two months. We ran campaigns (my cofounder knows multiple potential customers and is well resourced in that sense) but haven't had a paying customer yet (might be due to COVID, but of course the product might be the cause as well).

Now fast forward one month, we are trying to adapt our solution for the Shopify ecosystem, and my cofounder introduced me to another guy who's working with Shopify app companies for the last 3-4 years. His proposal is to onboard him as a cofounder, which I'm also happy to, but now the big question for me is,

"How should the equity be divided among three or us?"

I proposed it to be split half between me and my first co-founder, and slightly less to the newly onboarded guy. But my co-founder doesn't seem to agree with equal split, he thinks I should have a lesser equity share and said that that's usually the case with other SaaS companies too because SaaS is marketing intensive.

I was wondering if someone is aware of what the right split could be (or what's the usual trend) and can share that knowledge here.

PS: I know, I should've talked all this out in the very beginning, that's a mistake on my part.

Edit: Another question, Even If I end up convincing him for the equal split, is it really a good idea to move ahead in your opinion? (because for sure he has thought that either I'm bringing less value or he wants to have the bigger share irrespective of anything).

Coming on as early business dev/strategy role

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:35 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I have a bit of an interesting situation and need some feedback.

For some context, my background plays a significant role with the current opportunity. I've been a paramedic for about 18 years, and ran a relatively successful although now dead start up focusing on EMS and hospital communications. Have a nice network, and a very dialed in entrepreneurial brain.

I have a colleague with a similar type product, service, and some revenue, but needs someone exactly like me to help launch into my vertical of experience.

We've had a handful of calls outlining strategy, my thoughts and input, and him saying he wants to bring me on. Today we had a call and it ended on, figure out what you want your comp package to look like and we can review and negotiate next week.

He has mentioned on a couple occasions equity and that there is a pool of share I can dip into, 10-20% commission, and a salary once they close this next month.

What would my ideal package look like? I'm sure he will counter to some extent, but I'd like to start out as accurately as possible with a nice blend of salary, equity, and commission.

    Thanks!!

    Questions About Leasing Industrial Space

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:21 AM PDT

    I have a few questions I'm someone here has experience with. Our project requires some light machine work and wielding and to start we're going to need about 2,000 square feet of space with a dock and overhead door. Looking around in my area there are spaces available, but not many in this small of a size. My questions are about the logistics;

    • Is there generally a minimum lease term, like 1 year minimum?
    • Is it normal to get a discount for a longer lease?
    • How are utilities like electricity and water billed? Are they part of the lease or do I have to set up an account with the local utilities myself?
    • Are there any tips and warnings you've experienced you can share?

    Thanks!

Need help finding ways to source products for subscription box

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:47 AM PDT

Hello All! During my past two years in college, I have developed an idea for a subscription box centered around my college. I have created designs for the box, working on my customer experience, and am developing a marketing plan. I have also been speaking with the university on how I can brand my box without interfering with their trademarks and copyright because I understand that will be tricky.

The issue that is putting me on hold is sourcing products for my subscription box. Since I am dealing with college names and labels, I am having a lot of trouble finding places that even offer products or manufacturing services for my box.

Are there any ideas or recommendations for places to look or resources I can use to help me? I am open to all ideas.

Looking for ecological clothing suppliers as a small business

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:03 AM PDT

I am a small business owner from Germany currently active in the accessories sector. During corona I had some time thinking about my business and since I always loved the idea to wear my own clothing, I wanted to peek into this area.

To give you a hint about what I am looking for: I am not really interested in being a fashion designer and providing custom sewing patterns to get crazy custom fashion done.

I am looking for a supplier of ecologically made, free-from-animal-products (vegan) and, if possible, also fairly traded clothing products which I can have my own art prints on. Mainly interested in tops like oversized sweatshirts and t-shirts.

After researching online in different languages and on different platforms (from alibaba to kompass), I do not know how to proceed. It seems there is not one single factory making ecological clothing and if so, they usually want custom sewing patterns and stuff.

It would be nice to find some portal, or community or some manufacturer even where I can get into contact with people offering what I am looking for. It should be possible to find someone making ecological clothing and also printing it these days, shouldn't it?

Maybe I am mistaken and the approach is entirely wrong, maybe I need to seperate the printing from the clothing provider, do you have any starting points or general advice for me? :)
