[PPP/EIDL MEGATHREAD] The Senate has approved an extension of the PPP program through August. Ask EIDL/PPP questions here including about forgiveness

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:25 AM PDT

The PPP has changed repeatedly as different parties have input to the program. June 30 the Senate voted to extend the program through August 8th. The House of Representatives has not passed a matching bill and no extension has been signed by the President as of July 1st.

Previous PPP/EIDL discussions likely have answers to your questions and are worth searching. The rules did change several times but they will help you get direction to where you might find answers: https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/hizdae/pppeidl_the_ppp_application_period_is_closed_but/?sort=new

What is the best website builder for a small business?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:15 PM PDT

So I'm in the process of starting up a business and I'm planning on creating my own website. What I'm most concerned with is making my site look professional and driving traffic to it.

I've heard good things about Wordpress so I checked it out but I'm hesitant to go through with it because of the cost.

It costs $300 (25/month) for a business plan. It's not that it's too expensive, but I'm trying to avoid paying so much upfront if that's a possibility. However, if it's worth it, I'll definitely do it.

Anyways, any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Does one partner need to own the majority of a business or can ownership be split 50-50?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:12 AM PDT

Sorry if this is kind of a dumb question. A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I decided to start a small business. He has owned businesses before but I have absolutely no experience with it. Right now the time/effort we are putting in is pretty equal. The business was initially his idea and we're using his family's property. Initially costs were split roughly evenly, but he has run out of money so I am making all of the large purchases.

I saw our contributions as equal and just assumed that we would reimburse ourselves for expenses then split profits 50-50. I finally asked about it yesterday to confirm and he said he thinks it should be 51-49 because someone needs to be able to make decisions and that he should have majority ownership because it was his idea and his family's property. He also said he expects to take over completely down the road and he thought I would end up getting a job since he doesn't think the business can support both of us.

I'm taken aback because I saw us as equals and apparently he does not. Am I taking things too personally? I'm uncomfortable with the idea of taking on equal work and backing the venture financially just so that he can reap all the profits once the business that we built together is successful.

Is he right that someone needs majority ownership or can we do this as equal partners? What, if anything, should I be doing to protect my interests and my investment into this business? We're just kind of winging it as we go so we haven't drawn up any legal documents. I don't even know the first thing about how to start that. I have no entrepreneurs in my family/social circle to go to for advice so I appreciate any input.

What do you do if a customer can’t pay after service is provided?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:18 AM PDT

This hasn't happened yet, thank goodness. But, I think about it a lot and it gives me a fair bit of anxiety. I just started up a windshield replacement business. Most tickets are around 200 bucks. I'm dreading the day I go to run the card and it declines. How would you handle this situation and the customer?

    Thanks

Edit: thanks a bunch for the help. You guys and gals are amazing. You have all helped me so much and you should be proud of yourselves for being kind and helpful. I'll def pay it forward.

I've not understood this for 10 years: Using Personal Accounts vs Business Accounts

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:24 PM PDT

I was researching "paying rent on my home (that I also use as an office) via business accounts" and found the following reply in a Quickbooks forum:

If you are filing a schedule C for the business it is a disregarded entity. It doesn't matter which bank account or credit card you use to pay business expenses or personal expenses. It's all yours in the first place.

I'm a sole proprietor / independent contractor who took one accounting class in college way back in the early 2000's and have taught myself to keep my own books (with the help of consultants, forums, and accountants, of course) and this is the one thing I just cannot wrap my head around. And it's very frustrating as it seems like such an easy concept.

I have both personal checking, savings, and credit card accounts, as well as business checking, savings, and credit card accounts. Anything "business related" gets paid via business accounts and vice versa.

Is this simply my misunderstanding of what constitutes a business related expense? For example, the rent on my home. I've always paid rent via personal checking and taken a tax deduction for the use of the space. Could I / should I be paying rent via business checking? And if so, is the same true for cell phone and internet expenses?

Any insight you could provide, in lay terms, would be appreciated.

Ive got an idea that no one in my city is doing but Ive never run a business. How do I make a move?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:14 AM PDT

I need to understand if no one is doing it because no one wants it or because no one has thought to do it. I have a rough draft of a letter I would email, maybe hand deliver, to managers explaining what I can do for them and why they want it. Is this called an "offer letter"? Im thinking about using a freelance marketer to polish it, is that something I would post to an online professional marketplace? Im not interested, yet, in a full blown marketing strategy package, just an edit for format maybe some buzz words, a dash of experienced professionalism. It would start as a solo maintenance/exchange service to businesses and professionals then to general public. xoxo

How to deal with scummy competitors

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:01 PM PDT

Just for context, my wife (24F) and I (26M) run an at home vinyl sticker business, little things like iron on decals car stickers etc.

Recently we had a friend reach out and ask for a price on a product, we knew she had started a very similar business recently also.

We asked the friend if it was for a customer, the friend declined and advised it was for her but she could not cut large areas, i was sceptical from the get go but my wife gave her a price regardless, she never ends up purchasing and that's that.

A week later we see she has uploaded samples of the exact product and has decided to undercut us by $5 on a $30 product.

My first instinct was to go on the offensive, call her out, but I know that could damage our brand, my wife wants to just let it go. How have you folks dealt with this if you have encountered it before?

How do i value a restaurant?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:44 PM PDT

I want to know if it is possible to take out a loan to buy a restaurant. I have been the manager for 3 years. I know most of the financials. The owners do not give me the pnls. The owners own the property and the business. The covid crisis has them on edge and they threaten to close. I know the restaurant is profitable. How do I come up with a reasonable price? How many years should I expect to pay off the loan?

Furniture Store and money transfer business - Question about Essential businesses

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:22 PM PDT

A family member of mine has a family ran furniture store. Since furniture is considered non-essential they were forced to close down for the past few months and now their business is struggling. They live in central California I live in Southern California and I went to a local furniture store that was open and asked how they were able to remain open. That particular furniture store provided money transfer services (such money gram and western union), which according to the lady is considered essential and allows her store to remain open. My question is, is this true? Would there be any potential legal repercussions if they re-opened and made the service available?? They would abide by social distancing guidelines however the goal is to be able to sell furniture.... any suggestions?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

    Naming my gardening business

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 02:08 PM PDT

I'm seriously considering becoming a self employed gardener, but I've been struggling to think of a name. I have studied habitat management and ecology, and I've noticed a interest in "wildlife gardens", so I want to combine my hobby with my studies. I've hit a problem. The word "eco", "sustainable" and "natural" are overused to the point of cliche. I want to advertise the ecological aspect but not create a cliched business and not be taken seriously because of it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Planning to start a digital agency to help small businesses. Need inputs.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:18 PM PDT

    Hello entrepreneurs,

We all know that most of the businesses are hit hard due to COVID. And I think we have to deal with it for next year or so. This is the time, most of the businesses must come online to survive.

But as many of the small businesses have already suffered a lot during COVID and had fallen into a cash crunch, I was planning to start a web development agency to help them come online.

Now you will say there are already many agencies out there.

But I found it cost you somewhere around $2000-5000 to create a basic 4-5 pages business website. And most of the small business owners can't afford to spend that amount upfront in current situations.

So I thought I will come up with this affordable model:

    1) Upfront payment of $499-799. So that I can purchase hosting and domain and other stuff needed for website.

    2) Then a subscription model to keep that website online - $99/month

This setup will provide them with continuous help in making some additions to their website, a copywriter to write content for a website, and continuous maintenance of their website.

I guess such payment model can really take off the burden of spending huge chunk of money upfront.

Let me know if you would like such kind of payment model.

Anyone who is interested can PM me for more details.

I can even reward you for your time.
