    Auto Accident (California)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 09:19 PM PDT

I have had 1 auto accident during my 11 years of driving. California says it goes away after 3 years on your record. Insurance companies request a 5 year history. Should I be telling insurance companies of this accident?

When I rent a car, can I buy liability insurance (cheaper) from anywhere other than the rental company?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 11:33 AM PDT

I don't own a car so I have no car insurance. My credit card provides collision insurance. Each time I rent a car, the liability insurance adds about 50% to the cost of the car. I've tried finding a way to rent non-owners liability insurance for cheaper than the rental company charges but haven't had any luck. Am I stuck or is there an alternative?

Garden hose spicket pipe broke in ceiling/flooded basement. First timer insurance claim

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 10:20 PM PDT

Today (4th of July) was my first day off awhile. My woman and I decided to do some yard work. Using the garden hose to wet some areas in our yard yielded to lead to a flooded basement.

Upon inspection the water was coming from the basement ceiling, from the pipe going to the outside spicket. The pipe busted and loaded up the ceiling with water. The water found its way out and put a good inch of water in the ENTIRE basement.

I took pictures immediately of the damage and water leak/source. Started the cleanup process. Wet vacuumed, fans going and tore carpet out of one room. Basement is mostly wood looking style laminate.

This is my first home insurance claim. What else should I expect/prepare to do?

    USAA VPP Question

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 11:30 AM PDT

I have around 20k worth of camera gear that is insured with USAA. The insurance is stupid cheap at 200 dollars a year. We have already made a claim with them when my camera and lens got dunked in the ocean. USAA paid that claim with no issue ($2500).

However last night another lens fell into the water. Didn't zip up the bag all the way.. OOPS. If i made a claim on this one too do you think i will be dropped from their VPP insurance?

    I'm currently stationed in Germany

Is this a total loss? Pics in comments

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 09:37 AM PDT

Neighbors garage went up in flames overnight. Everyone's ok but I'm just wondering, is this car a total loss, from the extreme heat exposure that caused an entire side to discolor and the bumpers and lights to melt? Location: Minnesota

Want to invest initial capital for a new insurance franchise. What do we need to know? Learn about? Be on the lookout for?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 06:00 PM PDT

Background: A close acquaintance of my family with extensive experience wants to open a franchise for an insurance company in FL. He needs $80k and has $30k for it at the moment. He is waiting to save for the full $ needed.
My father wants to invest ~$50k to become co-owner of the franchise, let the acquiantance run the franchise and down the road earn half the profits. I advised to hire a lawyer and review all documents to make sure everything is correct and this is not a loan situation but rather an investing opportunity. What do we need to know? Learn about? Or be on the lookout for?

Renters Insurance: Does it Matter which one?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:23 AM PDT

    Hi,
I'm on the market for my first renters insurance. I got a couple of quotes, spoke with an agent, have a relatively good idea of the value of what I own and what I need in terms of liability/deductible/etc. Quotes are fairly close ($115 vs $155 per year, or along these lines)

If you look at reviews of these insurances, however, they are all horror stories about denied claims, repairs taking forever, contractors doing a bad job, etc. etc. (I'm talking big brand names, like State Farm, American Family, Geico, etc.)

My question is: does it even matter what insurance I go with? Should I simply pick the cheapest and pray that everything goes well, one way (no claims ever) or the other (claim that goes smoothly)?

    Thank you!

Is there any way I can get my insurance to help me out?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:54 PM PDT

*** California, US *** So I was backing out of my driveway, fairly slowly. I checked both ways before reversing as well as checked my camera. I checked while reversing. As I got out of my driveway by a few feet, my neighbor scraped against the side of my car and did not stop until she was a few yards away. She took with her many other parts of my car, breaking my taillight and scraping my bumper. I need to get three pieces or four pieces replaced, as well as wrap. Her car ended up getting a bit scraped as well.

The way insurance sees it, I backed up in to oncoming traffic, and she is not to blame at all. They've already taken my statement, as well as hers. Is there anything I can do here in this situation. It wasn't my fault, as I checked both sides before and while reversing. The woman who hit me is known as a fast driver in the neighborhood, too. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as I am already in debt as it is.

    Question about replacement value insurance.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 10:22 AM PDT

We lost our condominium to a fire in December 2019. The condo complex will be rebuilt by the condo association and each owner will be paid for their contents and improvements by their own insurance companies. I lived in the building for twenty years and I have always carried replacement value insurance on my contents.

Our apartments was basically a total loss. My insurer TD Insurance in Canada is telling me that they will only pay me cash value (50%) of the purchase cost of my belongings, all my belongings, until such time I actually physically replace every single item that is itemized in my claim.

Simply put they want to give me half the value of my TV or our furniture now and when we replace it ultimately (we won't be back in our apartment for another year) they will reimburse me the balance.

Given the situation with the pandemic, cash is tight right now. I'm unemployed at the moment. Who knows where things will be in a year.

I think that my insurance company knows that cash is tight right now for everyone and that if they only provide 50% of the value of my belongings I won't have enough additional money to replace all my items so that I can receive true replacement value.

Is this standard for this type of policy or am I being taken advantage of?

So is lemonade just a bad savings account?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 09:49 PM PDT

On their website they say that they take a fraction of your payment to pay people or whatever and then commit the rest to your next claim. That sounds like self insurance with extra steps. What am I missing here? If I get lemonade and the next day my house burns down, am I only getting a fraction of what I put in the day before?
