    *UPDATE* Bear hug from Coke

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:31 AM PDT

    Wanted to post an update for those of you interested. Thanks for all the great advice on my original post https://reddit.app.link/qvW2i1Qpe7 I ended up getting a hold of the guy / company who sold me the Coke machine. He told me that in the mid 90's Coke sold off most of their old equipment at auction and that's how he got it & several others. This was an older machine not quite up to date enough to put in his rotation so he sold it to me 3 years ago. Anyway here's what we did... He too has a Coke rep that he does business with who is actually the district manager for all the reps in our area. He gave this district manager a call and asked him to call off his dogs and explained the situation to him. I was assured by the man who sold me the machine that I won't be hearing from them again. I also have started the process of rebranding it to my store specifically so now instead of a Coke machine we will have an Ace Hardware soda machine! Thanks again guys!

    Good POS/WMS sytem that isn't crazy expensive?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 09:12 PM PDT

    Hello, I am looking for a POS/Wholesale management system.

    I need something a little more robust than Clover, Square, etc.

    I need to be able to:

    -NOT cloud based.

    -Ability to ring up items either by scanning barcode, or typing product code/description.

    -Track Inventory (automatic reorder limits)

    -Shopify Integration

    -UPS worldship integration

    -Track customers A/R

    -Robust reporting system (especially for taxes collected)

    -Print Full page invoices, not reciepts

    So far it seems that RMH (Retail Management Hero) fits the bill best, but their "Authorized" resellers are all trying to severely ding me on buying tech support packages.

    I am fairly computer literate, but don't want to get myself into something TOO complicated where I will have to rely on outside support for running.

    Just wanted to see if any of yall had some experience/recs. Thank you!

    Need help knowing when to make my first hire.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 07:18 PM PDT

    Need help knowing when to make my first hire.

    I left my marketing agency job back in Aug, 2019 to start my own thing. The last quarter of 2019 was rough and I took a huge pay cut. Now, almost 10 months later, I am making close to 10k a month which is almost triple what I was making at my corporate job.

    I'm kind of a one man marketing agency and take on brand messaging, social media, PR and graphic design projects for small businesses. My business is 50% monthly retainers (social media, blogging) and 50% miscellaneous projects. The miscellaneous projects look different each month and require lots of my time and energy as they are very creative.

    I have been going back-and-forth on hiring a part time person to help me with the monthly retainer side of my business, especially with social media content creation and scheduling. I feel stuck because I love not having any large expenses but I also don't want to spread myself too thin or commit to more projects/clients than I can handle.

    How do you know when it's the right time to make your first hire? Should I hire someone with experience (more $$) or someone I can train (less $$)? Any and all advice is welcome.

    Advice please for bookstore owner on employee management

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 08:35 PM PDT

    Hello. I own a small but popular bookshop and cafe in a little town. I bought this business 5 year ago and proud to say we're still going strong! We have 10 employees, 3 full time and 7 part time.

    When I first start I set up a "staff picks" section and is very popular. Half staff enjoy putting their locks up regularly, the other half do it sometimes.

    One of my best employees has been here near to 20 years, long before me. Yesterday she took all the names off the staff pick area and said we need the shelves for new books. The publishers stop printing because of coronavirus and now we have three months of orders all at once.

    I wish she had discussed it with me first. The display meant a lot to me and some of our staff. I know not all. She is right we need more room for new books, but I would happily to buy more shelving. She is a lot older than I am so I want to be respectful, but to just tear down everyone's name and pick without telling anyone, especially me, really bothers me very much. I pay my whole life's saving for this business, I want to be a part of it.

    How would you talk to her? Would even bother? Do I put staff picks back? Or let it go? Please help.

    My bank keeps putting 5 day holds on my checks.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:58 PM PDT

    The bank I use use updated its name not too long ago, though I felt the old name showed more direction. They put a 5 day hold on every payment I put in for my business. They say it's due to overdrafts. However I can prove the overdrafts are caused by them putting holds on every payment I get in. When I brought that up they told me "oh well we have no record of you receiving payment from this company." It was one of my biggest customers. They for sure have. I've also been told by several services that I pay. That the bank will process their payment the payment will go through and then will later pull it back out. I'm not even sure how that's possible. Very easily could be misunderstanding what they are saying. It's killing my business. Thanks to how it's being done I can't keep enough money in the account to pull out and go somewhere else. Not to mention that I would still have pending payments there for them to screw me over with. I'm not sure if anyone else has faced this problem, I'm not sure what to do. I honestly feel like crying.

    SBA loan vs 2nd Mortgage

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:33 PM PDT

    I've been doing a side hustle and want to go full time. I need some startup money and I thought about taking out a SBA loan or a second mortgage. I know it's hard to get a SBA loan and that you will need to put up some type of collateral like my house. Any advice?

    Would you pay for this internal knowledge management software?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 07:34 PM PDT

    Hey everyone! My friend and I are thinking about building an intranet/wiki for companies to better share and consume information.

    Problem that we're tackling: make it easier to find and share information that would get lost in google drive or slack.

    Benefits of the product:

    • Find all the relevant information and concentrate on one platform;
    • No more information silos;
    • Save time ramping up new hires;
    • Avoid valuable knowledge lost when people leave the company.

    Features:

    • Groups:
      • Make it invite-only, visible to certain teams or visible to everyone;
      • Allow or not members to post;
      • Create groups that are mandatory;
    • Documents
      • Bookmark documents and categorize them what you saved as you wish;
      • Create templates of documents that are created regularly;
      • Get email notifications periodically or use our slackbot so only you, certain people or a channel gets notified when a new document in a certain group is created;
      • Comment, tag people on specific sections;
      • Allow certain users to edit the document;
      • Attach files as you wish: pdfs, videos, audios, code files, PowerPoint files, all of them can be previewed on the platform or downloaded;
      • Create tags as you wish to make it easier to find the document;
      • Save the document as a draft or schedule the post to go live later;
    • User management
      • Customize and create roles: who can create/edit/comment documents, create groups;
      • Add/remove users;

    It would be great if you have any feedback or suggestions for us about the product and if you'd be interested in the product or not (and the reasons why, if possible).

    Thank you!!

    Can I use images from another artist on handmade items to sell?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 07:17 PM PDT

    So I had an idea to have a small business online where I would make bags/purses and the likes and handpaint them. For the most part, I would paint things like flowers and stuff but would I be able to paint images from say an anime or a music group like gorillaz and sell them without having legal issues? I've seen people on Instagram who do this and print images from animes and movies onto shirts and pants with no trouble

    Stupid question... but how do I actually start selling items as my LLC and not as “me”?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:29 PM PDT

    So... I have an LLC. I have a website with shopify. I log into Shopify with my LLC's Gmail account. I use my personal credit card to pay for the Shopify account.

    so, when someone buys my product, what makes it so they are buying it from my LLC and not just "me"? I just feel very unofficial.

    besides just putting my LLC at the footer of my website and a sticker on the box.... what makes liability fall into the LLC and not me?

    thanks I hope this makes sense.

    Employment Taxes

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:05 PM PDT

    So businesses get payroll money from SBA PPP but business owners have to pay out of pocket for Employment Taxes. Why?

    I never did understand this logic. Perhaps I missed the discussions about this. Can someone tell me why it is the case?

    Leasing a Truck

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:38 PM PDT

    I am thinking about leasing a pickup truck through my business for going to farmer's markets, picking up product, etc. Do I just walk into any dealership and let them know it's for my business...do they even need to know that? Or can I just put the truck in my name and pay the monthly out of my business account?
