Like a dummy, I drove away from the gas pump yesterday without removing the hose. Should I file a claim with my insurance or pay out of pocket?

My insurance, through Geico, has no deductible for the damage caused to the pump and no damage was caused to my vehicle. I live in California (Bay Area) and when I spoke to the gas station owner he said that the repair cost through use of a technician usually ranged from $900 - $1500. My coverage for 2 vehicles (my wife and mine) is about $1300 for 6 months. I have an old speeding ticket (almost 3 years old now) and two red light camera tickets (one is almost 3 years old and one is about a year old) which caused my insurance premiums to be high. Does anyone know if I'm at risk for a premium hike here? If so, any idea how much? If there is a premium hike for 3 years, the amount would need to be less than $200 per 6 months for it to make sense to report (assuming $1200 for the cost of pump repair). Any thoughts? Thanks you! PS - This link states that geico premiums increase by 57% after an at fault accident!

A roofing contractor in Texas is telling me they are required by law to collect my deductible.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 05:14 AM PDT

I have recently had a claim for my roof due to hail damage. My insurance company has settled the claim with me & cut a check. The check is their estimate of repair costs minus my deductible. There is a Roofing company salesman that has been trying to get the job. He is telling me that he will do the job for the insurance proceeds plus my deductible. He keeps making the point to tell me that he is required by law to collect my deductible in full. I want to know if this is true. Is what my insurance is estimating any business of the roofing company's? If I can get the job done for the amount the insurance company paid me minus my deductible, am I breaking the law? Thanks for looking.

Parking lot accident - who’s at fault

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 12:50 AM PDT

I was driving in a parking lot today and was in an auto accident [California]. I was exiting a row "feeder lane" and was going to pull straight forward across the lane I was entering (still in the parking lot). I got to the end of my row, stopped and then proceeded to move forward. As I began to proceed, a car coming from my left was approaching me quite fast. I stopped once I noticed the car coming and a few seconds later they struck me on the driver side around the front tire. They push my car to the side and scrapped the whole side of his car. Who would be at fault? I know I was a few feet into the lane, but he was coming up so fast and I had no time to reverse or continue to pull forward. There is no evidence of how fast his was traveling, although the damages should show it was faster than the allowed limit (if they factor that).

Does soot and smoke have to be visible on every surface to be considered a concern for an insurance claim?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:15 PM PDT

I've created an insurance claim for damage to my apartment after a neighbor's fire. I'm curious if insurance will deny smoke and soot claims for items that don't have visible oily streaks from soot or visible damage from smoke?

My neighbor had a large fire that destroyed his apartment last night and my landlord says his apartment is going to be considered a total loss. Since my apartment was connected to his, the firefighters broke my door and someone opened my balcony/windows at some point (maybe to air out the apartment). My landlord has told us the apartment is not currently livable and the fire restoration company will provide a plan for restoring my unit back to livable conditions. My insurance is currently paying our costs to live in a hotel.

There's black smoke and water damage to our balcony and outside furniture, as well as water damage in parts of our apartment. There's also a strong smoke smell in our apartment, and soot and black rocks around a few of the rooms. There's a dust over everything and across some surfaces you can pick up a black dust with a tissue. There was also smoke and water damage to nearby apartments that were not directly connected to his by a wall.

I'm still in shock over the fire and am new to this whole process. I'm a bit curious how they will determine damage to my couch, bed, and other soft furniture if you can't see oily streaks or black soot on every part. Since I was so close to the fire, I'm weary of a company "cleaning" my electronics or furniture. Anyone have experience filing a similar claim?

    Insurance for Jaw Surgery

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I live in Georgia, and I'm planning on getting my braces soon, but my orthodontist said I'll need braces for a year, jaw surgery, then braces for another year to correct my underbite. I'm okay with paying for my braces out of pocket, but the cost of jaw surgery out of pocket is TERRIFYING, and I'm not sure the student insurance I'll have in August will cover it (I don't think it will, though). Therefore:

How should I handle the insurance part? I'm going to be a master's student in TN, so the only group insurance I could get would be my school's student health insurance, and my surgeon doesn't take Ambetter or anything from the healthcare marketplace (which were going to be my other options). I don't have sleep apnea or other medical issues, but I've been told my underbite is pretty severe (unfortunately, I don't know the exact measurements). I won't get my health insurance until August 1st, so I might bite the bullet and pay the $482 for a consultation and see if my health insurance covers it in September (even though it's recommended to have a consultation 2 - 3 months before the procedure so I'd need to schedule another consultation next June and pay another $482). If my health insurance doesn't cover it, I could try and change health insurances, but I also heard I might need to have the insurance for like a year before they cover big surgeries.

I could also wait until I graduate and hopefully get a job with good insurance that would cover the jaw surgery, but I feel like that'd be a gamble, and also I feel like jaw surgery is one of those costs that the longer you postpone it, the less worth it it'll be since it's supposed to be life-changing (I'm 22 right now). I greatly appreciate any/all advice!!

Do I need temporary liability insurance for driving a relative's car if I'm uninsured?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 04:57 PM PDT

I'll be traveling to Nevada and California for a 10-day trip and a relative there is willing to lend me his fully-insured car. It seems that collision insurance goes with the car, but what about liability? I don't own a car nor have auto insurance under me currently. When I rent a car from a vacation rental car company, they always make me add-on liability insurance because I'm uninsured, but I don't seem to find an option to purchase this without going through a rental car company. Thoughts? Thanks!

Liability insurance in a rented car.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 08:01 PM PDT

Me and my dad rented a car off Turo. It was a 2014 Nissan GT-R. Had a incident while We drove it. During a traffic jam, a car in front of us backed up into it and we moved to the side and then they just left. It was a hit and run but we werent able to get any of their info. It was a minor hit honestly. Insurance told us they werent going to be covered because they think I (M19) was the one driving it. This is because my father asked the owner beforehand if it were okay if i drove the car, to this he answered that i could if i was approved as a driver which I wasn't. Therefore, I didnt drive it. Now they wont cover my dad because they say I was driving it. We are sitting on a 8000+ bill which could end up being more because they don't want to cover us. What do we do?

    Edit: I live in California.

I bought an Insurance Policy to insure me driving my friends vehicle. My Insurance Denied me Coverage

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 08:01 PM PDT

    Hey folks,

I purchased an auto policy for one reason to insure me driving my buddy's vehicle. I had an at fault accident and filed for claim of loss with my insurance, Farmers. They denied me coverage, stating the vehicle is insured by the registered owner and their insurance should cover me...

I live in the state of California. My insurance knew they wouldn't cover me yet they collected their premiums... I can't believe they denied me coverage...

How does this make sense? Just because I'm curious has anyone had a similar situation?

Thank you in advance folks, you guys rock

Homeowners who filed roof claims successfully - how bad was the damage?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:45 PM PDT

Just wondering who got approved and what extent of damages should there be before filing.

I was in the yard today and found a couple of shingles blown off the roof from a recent windstorm. Part of the windstorm had hail. Not sure if that necessitates even filing, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I'm expecting some hurricane-level damage responses here lol

Question regarding the insurance plans for pregnancy/childbirth

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:44 PM PDT

    Hello!

I am recently pregnant and am in the middle of switching to new health insurance from my partner's employer. They chose UnitedHealthcare Oxford. There is a plan that is pretty expensive- something like 1,000+ a month for both of us with no deductible and a lower maximum out of pocket, also lower costs for visits, etc. (I don't have to documents so I can't recall the exact amount), and there is a plan that is something like 700 a month but there is I think a 2,000 deductible and a higher maximum out of pocket.

Is there a good argument to be made for spending that much on insurance when pregnant? I see a big range when it comes to the cost of pregnancy and childbirth so I can't tell how to figure out if we'd be paying more in the long run with the more expensive plan or not. The other thing is, I'm due in February which will be just after the coverage year starts over. I can try to get exact coverage details if needed to answer but was also just looking for general thoughts on this. also if it helps: I'm older, so the pregnancy could be considered higher risk and will be moving during pregnancy from Georgia to Oregon. Thank you!

Car Insurance: one driver, two cars. Do I have to pay for all the insurance for both cars. See details.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 11:44 AM PDT

Car_A is a 2004 sedan that have had for 10+ years. It is worth about $100 but drives fine. I have geico. Prior to getting Car_B, I only had Car_A. When Car_A became junk, I dropped Comprehensive and Collision, as car is not worth it. That left me with "Bodily Injury Liability (BIL)" "Property Damage Liability (PDL)", "Uninsured Motorist (UM)" and "Underinsured Motorist (UDM)".

I get Car_B, with full insurance as it is financed. But I am still paying for all the items listed above for Car_A. Should I be? Doesn't the full insurance I pay for CAR_B cover me, the driver, if I drive Car_A. So does the BIL, PDL, UM, UDM, stay with the car, or follow the driver?

I know I need to ask Geico, but looking for what other know, before I go down that path.

    Auto Insurance for Junk Car

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:30 PM PDT

I'm buying a car in the next week and plan on transferring my auto insurance policy to my new car. I just paid off the lien on my old vehicle and currently waiting on the title from Harrisburg? My old car is parked outside my house on a well-traveled street however, it cannot be driven. Will I still need to keep it insured, in addition to my new car? It could take at least four weeks for my title to come through, then another few days before I can sell it to a junkyard.

    Permissive use auto insurance NJ

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I feel like this guy that hit my car and his company (USAA) are trying to get one over on me. Any advice would be great because I'm not sure what to do.

On 5/5/20 my car was hit while parked. When I tried to confront the driver that hit my car and broke my driver side mirror he fled the scene. I managed to get a picture of the car, license plate, driver, and even a video of him fleeing. When I tried to contact his insurance (USAA) with all that information they told me that they are investigating "permissible use" because the claim owner is stating that his landscaper took his car without his permission so now his insurance is hinting that they are possibly not going to pay for it. I'm not sure what to do now... should I just pay to get my mirror fixed and then take him to small claims court to get my money back? We have to meet in court regardless because I filed a police report but not sure if that going to help his insurance pay for my damage. I don't want to go through my insurance because my deductible is $1000 and the damage is worth $400.

This whole situation seems so convenient for the person that hit my car. The guy never even pressed charges against his "landscaper" nor did he notify the police that his car was stolen.....Like how tf can someone just hit your car and claim that it wasn't them driving.

How to find old driver's license number? [CT/NC]

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:17 PM PDT

For a new car insurance policy, we need my boyfriend's past driver's license numbers from CT and NC (as he's being considered an "inexperienced driver" with only his current license). How can we find those numbers? Do we call the DMV in each state (if they're open?)? Or is it more complicated?

    Insurance review

I'm moving to Florida where I have heard auto insurance is quite high. I contacted Geico and they are quoting me at 50% of what I am paying now for similar policies in South Carolina. Can someone provide feedback if this looks accurate and adjustments you would ask or? Was thinking of bumping bodily injury to 50/100 but not sure if the declined options are recommended or not. Either way, this is coming in around $1300 per 12 months.

    Progressive auto insurance/car insurance

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 04:09 PM PDT

I'm currently on my parents car insurance, and I plan to move out soon-ish from Virginia to Ohio A few questions I have about the insurance though. 1) what if I move early/mid policy? What happens with me/the insurance? Am I just automatically removed, is there like a cancellation fee? 2)I was in a car accident almost a year ago. Whenever I do an auto quote the only option there is when asked if I've been in an accident is "head-on collision-at fault" Which would be correct, BUT if said like that it sounds like I completely jacked another car up. When in reality it was a pretty minor crash, at most the front bumper was damaged and his headlight was scratched, and so was mine, we both had a pretty quick reaction time. Would it make a difference if I called them and explained the situation?

Is Pennsylvania Auto Insurance Outlet any good?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 03:55 PM PDT

This'll be my first time buying car insurance and there are a lot of different things to navigate. I am a college student in Philadelphia, so having the lowest price is at the top of the list. That being said, I don't want insurance that is pure garbage. Does anybody have any luck with paaio.com? I always get the lowest quote from them but I'm not sure if it's legit. As I understand they are like an agency that looks for the lowest price but I don't know much beyond that.

    Auto vs Health after accident?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 11:56 AM PDT

I was recently in a small fender bender with my motorcycle - it was my fault. The other persons car isn't majorly damaged, my motorcycle isn't majorly damaged, but I have a small fracture in my foot, and was talked into getting into the ambulance to get to the hospital.

This is my first claim I've been at fault for, so I'm not sure what the best way to go about this is. The lady in charge of collecting billing info in the ER was giving me the option to use my auto policy or health insurance policy.

My motorcycle has full coverage, with $2,500 in medical payments/person, and a $500 collision deductible. My health insurance deductible is $1,750, max out of pocket cost is around $4,000.

It has only been two days, but I have not been contacted by the other lady's insurance company, or the police at all regarding the report - they have my ins info. Any advice would be great. TIA

    [Question] Qualifying life event

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 03:23 PM PDT

I have a question that I can't find a clear answer to, maybe one of you can help:

My ex-wife carries my daughter's health insurance. She works for a very large law firm so her health benefits were much cheaper than those offered by my much smaller employer.

However, she is considering quitting her job to become self employed and would likely end up in the individual health insurance market.

Our divorce agreement states that my ex-wife will provide health insurance for our daughter, but I'm willing to be flexible. The two of us are still friendly. I obviously don't want my daughter to be without coverage, but I also don't want my ex to be excessively burdened by the increased costs in the face of what is likely to be at least a temporary decrease in income.

Would my daughter's loss of health coverage be a qualifying life event that would allow me to add her to my policy outside of the open enrollment period?

    Thanks

Towing a Camper. Weight and Liability question. Can't get a straight answer from multiple insurance agencies. Maybe Reddit can help?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:01 PM PDT

So I am in the process of purchasing a travel trailer for camping. It weighs 1500lbs. The cars towing capicity is 2000lbs. I understand that I need to stay within the GVWR, but say for example I forget to empty the gray and black tanks in the trailer and it is over by 1lb or 100lbs, and I rear end someone or god forbid worse, how does an insurance agency take that into account when deciding to deny coverage. In other words, because I wasn't under the manufacturers recommended towing capacity, can they just stop coverage? On the other hand, if someone is speeding and they get into an accident, insurance still covers you...so technically you can break the law and insurance won't drop coverage. I know it is kind of a random question. (BTW, the suv that I am using is rated to tow up to 3500lbs in other countries so I am not worried at all about the car or safety)

    How screwed am I?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:00 PM PDT

Roofers fixing mad roofs in my neighborhood. Just bought the house in October and began coverage then. Major company shows up at my door asks if I want mine inspected. I said sure why not. They say it needs replacing as i knew it already does. They call insurance company with me and proceed to tell my insurance company that the damage was from July of last year hail storm. Before we bought the house and before we had coverage, which obviously got denied. The moment he said July 2019 I was thinking how I just told the roof contractor everything and now I'm worried my premium will go way up or that they won't cover a roof after the next big storm. I was dumb to even answer the door. Lesson learned. Any thoughts/advice?

Insurance premium went up for both vehicles?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:37 PM PDT

Hi everyone! Sorry if this is a silly question but I couldn't really find the answer online.

I have Farmer's car insurance and I live in California. My father got into a not-at-fault fender bender a year ago while he was driving his Toyota. Does it make sense that a year later, the insurance premium for his other vehicle, a Honda, went up? This is what our rep is telling us and I just want to confirm if this is normal practice.

Basically, is it regular practice to raise an insurance premium on a vehicle that has never been involved in any accidents?

    Thanks in advance!
