    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Jun 30, 2020

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

    TSLA valuation

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:28 AM PDT

This is a topic that has already been milked alot but I want to talk about it.

TSLA's book value is 6B, revenue is currently negative but it's not important bc it's a very small number compared to their cash.

The fact is that it currently has a market cap of 197B, so if hypothetically their debts disappear they got a book value of 32B, let's add another 20B for their brand so 52B, let's also say that their profit quadruples to 16B instantly, now it's fairly priced or even a bit undervalued if you use discounted cash flow as a method of evaluation.

But I dont think this is such a realistic view, I think Teslas will be widely used in the future and in years it will become a commonly used car not a rare/luxury one, but it's not an instant thing like in my example.

But it's possible that in years they quadruple their sales and so their profit, but that kind of advance is more or less already priced in the current price.

I think if you buy now and hold it for decades (as you should do when you are investing) you will see a profit, but there's not a margin of safety and that cash would be better spent elsewhere where it would have better returns.

Is it just me or do you have a better chance making money by throwing it out as opposed to investing in oil?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:51 AM PDT

The world is for the most part back up n operating. If you look out your window traffic has picked up six fold, people are traveling again, businesses are open. Yet oil continues to fuckin decline.

What am I missing? Are suppliers just out of no where ramping up production to out weight increase in demand in attempt to write off more losses for absolutely no fuckin reason?

Elon Musk calls Jeff Bezos a copycat for Amazon acquiring self-driving start-up Zoox

The feud can be traced all the way back to 2013 when Space X and Blue Origin were fighting for NASA's deal haha these guys just can't get along. I know what I am going to say may hurt Tesla/ Musk fans here but I feel like it was so one-sided that it was Elon calling out Jeff Bezos every time that Jeff Bezos has been quiet.

Which I had known this when I started

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:22 PM PDT

Buying stock at a lower price than you originally paid for it to balance out your "price".

For example: say you bought 10 stocks of F at 7.00, now it's at 6.00; You buy 10 more at 6.00, and your holding price becomes 20 stocks of 6.50 total, allowing you to capture it at a lower price and get your money back.

Seems obvious to a learned investor, but I literally did not know it worked this way. Could've saved some money, hopefully this finds a new investor who doesn't know this effective solution to recovering a stock you bought at a high point that it's not reaching anymore.

Better to invest in tech ETFs?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:34 AM PDT

New investor here, is it better to invest into tech ETFs (QQQ, ARKK) vs standard ETFs like SPY or VOO?

Or is it more a standard ETFs is a safer option whereas tech ETFs take on more risk but with potentially higher returns?

For someone who just wants to put money in for a better return on investment then placing it into a savings account, would a standard ETF better fit the bill, even as someone who believes in the big tech firms like GOOG and MSFT?

Or even just invest directly into GOOG, MSFT, AMZN would be better if I have a higher risk tolerance?

CocaCola suspending ads on social media has been the best #Ad for them.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:36 AM PDT

Anyone notice how much media coverage Coca Cola has gotten from suspending its ads on social media platforms? I've seen article after article, I'm not sure it was extremely calculated and planned to work this way but good for them.

Note for future business: cancel advertising costs—> make super big deal about it —> get free ads in the form of articles about why they canceled them —> 💰💰

    Hyliion is looking very promising

I definitely bought in for a few hundred shares and this thing has a ton of upward movement potential. Their ability to utilize existing infrastructure and modify current fleets gives them quite an edge. https://www.ttnews.com/articles/hyliion-electrified-powertrain-steps-go-1000-miles-tank

    UBER potential acquisition

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:23 AM PDT

So Uber is in talks to potentially acquire postmates. If that goes through personally I'll be bullish on the stock. Just wanted to hear everybody else's opinions on UBER stock at the moment and if you're all buying or selling. And i'm well aware that most of the people in this subreddit think Uber is garbonzo.

1,5 Years Since My Journey Began, $52 591 dollars wealthier & only 18 months left.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:42 PM PDT

    Introduction

I'm 20 years old and my interest for the stock market began at age 16 which later grew into becoming my lovely addiction and before graduating high school i already had a detailed plan on how i would become financial independent and self employed as quick as possible, the first milestone to reach before continuing my dreams are to reach an entire net worth of $100 000 dollars.

In the beginning of setting the $100 000 dollar goal i started with $13 953 dollars and today 1,5 years later i have a total net worth of $66 544 dollars which basically means i only have 33,45% left of the goal to complete within 18 months which is entirely possible. It felt so much harder in the beginning but hard work pays off. While creating the plan i expected to have $52 730 dollars this month of the year but from making better decisions, working hard and presumably a little touch of luck i'm 5 months ahead.

I maximized the overtime-limit at my workplace last year which is roughly 200 hours per year, i managed to reach 212h, sadly the overtime is cancelled due to covid-19 but currently i have 24h 36m in overtime. I've driven taxi (illegally which i stopped doing), been cutting lawns an lending out money in order to speed up the process of my journey.

I've cut almost all unnecessary expenses, i don't travel, i rarely drink alcohol, still driving around in my $1 000 dollar car watching others laugh at me but don't get me wrong, i enjoy traveling and eventfully i'm going to buy myself a new car, i don't want to create wealth just to stare at it. This is something i been planning for a very long time and that i'm fully committed to. It's psychologically frustrating but in the end it's definitely going to be worth it.

    Portfolio distribution

    • Stocks: 35,79% ($23 816)
    • Funds: 8,27% ($5 503)
    • Ready assets: 55,93% ($37 218)
    • Stocks: ATVI, AAPL, AZN, BAC, CAST, DAL, MSFT, HUFV A, KIND SDB, NFLX, NVDA, SWED A, UBER
    • Funds: Avanza Auto 6, Avanza USA, Spiltan Aktiefond Investmentbolag

note: The Tickers with bold fonts are swedish stocks/funds which may not be available in your country.

I sold a majority of my shares in the beginning of 2020 expecting a recession or correction but instead we got covid-19 which was extremely unpredictable so i was really lucky that i already had a pretty high amount in liquidity. So far i've been taking advantage of the pandemic by investing in stocks that i hopefully believe will recover. I also did some Q1 report trading which made me about $3 000 dollars profit, i traded CAST, GOOG, TWTR and I'm constantly looking for opportunities.

I'm expected to be fully invested within 1 year and i'm not stressed by having 55,93% liquidity since the inflation is 0. The "fear of missing out" is also nothing that's bothering me, everything can happen, especially now.

    Income, expenses & conditions

My monthly income varies depending on how much i work but i averaged $3 008 dollars after taxes during 2019, i invest everything except $500 dollars and the reason how i can invest 83,37% of my monthly income is because i still live at home. The only reason why i still live at home is so i can take advantage of the opportunity to invest and build myself a foundation.

    The Missing piece

What i'm missing is friends and connections with this interest in common, i rarely have anyone to talk with when it comes to investments and such so i really hope that i can reach out to some of you. If you're interested just send me a message, thanks for reading and if you have any questions i'll be happy to answer.

    Market predicting a Biden win?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:17 PM PDT

Do you guys think the markets are predicting a Biden win, and approaching a huge correction around September - October? I heard some analyst today on CNBC and all of them are of the opinion that markets will most likely correct around that time frame and they are waiting to buy those dips.

If you could only hold 3 stocks for the next 10 years, which would you choose and why?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:12 AM PDT

A bit of a thought experiment to see what people would do with their money in a hypothetical experiment like this. Hopefully there are some interesting picks that others can benefit from. I'll go first:

Microsoft: One of the biggest companies in the world and an ever innovative giant of the tech industry. They have their hands in so many different sectors that are projected to keep growing massively this decade and they are one of the safest plays you can make in my opinion.

Mastercard: Fintech will only ever keep growing, barring a huge swing in prevailing sentiment, and Mastercard is the smaller although more innovative one of what is essentially a duopoly with Visa, who are the biggest player in the sector. With around 77% of all transactions worldwide still conducted with physical cash, I expect plenty of growth from them in the future.

Cameco: I am a big believer in uranium and the role it plays in nuclear power. In my opinion and also the opinion of a plethora of environmental scientists, politicians and industry insiders, the price for uranium needs to go up and nuclear power needs to become a significant part of the fight against climate change. With Cameco being the biggest uranium company in the west, they are the best investment if one believes in a nuclear renaissance

I am curious to hear your takes on this question

Shaq promoting NKLA and the badger

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:45 PM PDT

Shaq just posted on his instagram that he has preordered the badger. It's pretty obvious he's being paid and working with Nikola but either way it's a big move for them. The post already has about 100k likes in an hour or two.

This is definitely the kind of main stream exposure they need to keep their momentum going. Might get a little bump tomorrow, especially if they announce him as an official sponsor or ambassador or whatever. Either way, here's a rocket ship 🚀.

Aren't airline stocks guaranteed to rise long-term?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:15 AM PDT

We don't know when it will go back up, but it will. Be it weeks, months, or years. Once Covid becomes controlled, which may take a while, it will go up. Airlines are a necessary part of how our economy runs. They can't fail, or I guess the government can't let them fail.

So isn't it free money to buy now while prices are low and hold for the long run?

    Thoughts to my reasoning?
