You've been brainwashed as an employee and it's prohibiting your company's growth.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:56 AM PDT

For those of you who are starting your business fresh out of working a 9-5, this one's for you. (and for you dreamchasers waiting to pull the trigger...you got this.)

You've been trained pretty much your entire working life, and most of your scholastic life to earn money and SAVE it.

We've been taught this for many reasons:

One of which being that it's what used to attract employees to work for large companies back in the day.

The most attractive selling point to potential applicants was the wonderful 401K plan, or the Pension that was offered. (and your parents probably taught you this because that's all they knew)

We all know how GREAT and STABLE these options are…NOT.

Anyway, you've been trained so long to operate this way - so now, as a business owner, if you don't consciously make the switch from "Saver" to "Investor" your growth will be limited.

Here's my experience on this theory:

I help contractors understand sales and marketing principles in their business. If I tell a contractor how I got started by spending a large amount of money on advertising avenues such as HomeAdvisor, Angie's List, Thumbtack or another paid lead generation service, the push-back I usually get is how they aren't comfortable with spending money on leads.

I have to literally re-wire their thinking to understand that the only way for your company to grow is for people to find you when they need you, and the fastest, most efficient way is to pay your way in the beginning.

It's scary to them because they do not see this as an investment that yields a return, instead, they retreat and revert to their old-fashioned thinking that by spending the money (which they have not yet been trained to allocate as an advertising expense) will result in a "loss" as it would if they were to spend money on a vacation or something when they worked for someone else as an employee. Equating these two things is done more out of habit than through logic and reason.

For a company that wants to grow, but has a leader with this mindset of penny pinching when it comes to advertising, that company will never reach the potential heights it could, and most importantly, it will take way too long.

My advice is to have a system to JUSTIFY your spending

To go from "Saver" to "investor" you must track your investments so you can justify re-investing over and over again. For example, If I set a budget of $1000 for paid leads for my House Painting Business, I'm going to track my:

    • Opportunities (Estimates Given)
    • Sales (Closed Business)
    • Secondary Leads (Friends of people I met through this advertising channel that have allowed us to give them an estimate)
    • Secondary Sales (Closed business of friends or neighbors of people I met through this advertising channel)

That $1000 investment could've landed me well over $25000 in business. However, the "saver" business owner is probably still running around passing out flyers wasting his time.

If you want to grow FAST, PAY your way, track your investments, justify your investments, rinse and repeat.

I also want to emphasize how important it is to track your "secondary leadflow" - again, attributing organic lead-flow through customers met through the advertising channel.

I did a video on the concept on my instagram.com/tradethrive if you're interested in hearing about this topic further.

Is this sub a new social media sales pitch?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:39 AM PDT

Most content is repetitive and have flashy headlines including social media handles at bottom.

I just don't read them and downvote by default.

    Am I missing something?

Does trying to drive blog subscription make sense anymore?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:49 AM PDT

I'm talking about the SaaS industry in particular. Does blog subscription still figure as a tactic in your content marketing marketing strategy?

The majority of people who read your content, be it a blog post or a whitepaper on your website's resource section, aren't your regular website visitors. Instead, when they are looking to find a solution to their problem or researching on the topic, they end up landing on your article or web page.

Let me back this up with some data.

Looking at some of the most successful blogs in the SaaS world, it was found that only 17% of visitors were returning. That means these sites get 83% new visitors every month.

    And hence this question.

Edit update: I was writing a blog post on this topic and have incorporated some key directions from the discussion here - https://www.yaagneshwaran.com/blog/subscribers-in-content-marketing-world/ (I promise there is nothing salesy here. Just a thank you for the points)

“How I made $100k flipping phones in 60 days” - sounds too good to be true and probably is. How to tell.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:09 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of "too good to be true" get rich quick schemes over the years.

These business usually make money coaching others how to do it.

If I knew how to make $100k in 60 days, I probably wouldn't tell others how to do it. It would saturate the market and destroy my business.

My guess is there's more money in coaching people how to do X instead of just doing X.

I won't call it a scam, but it seems like a waste of your money. Especially if a thousand other people took the same course and know the same "secret".

So it doesn't pass my test for a good business.

What are some other "get rich quick" ideas you avoid and what tests do you use to identify them?

How long should you wait for an angel investor to contact you back before moving on?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:40 AM PDT

Hey everybody! Long time lurker on this classic thread...

I just sent a cold email pitch this morning to an investor who I thought would be a great fit for my business opportunity, and I was thinking about giving him up to 3 business days to respond if he was interested. Do y'all think that's a reasonable time frame or do you have other suggestions? Thanks!

Tips for beginning entrepreneur.. from an IT background..

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:59 AM PDT

Hi, I'm currently working in my dad's business, it's fairly decent.. around 30 employees at the moment.. but I'm having trouble having to adjust to an entrepreneur's/businessman's mindset. I come from a very technical background, I'm a programmer from my college course and I'm used to just get handed tasks from a boss to do what I have to do on a daily basis. But now I'm the boss, and I have no idea which direction I should be headed. Sometimes I go in the office and have no clue what to do at that day and waste it on just staring at the laptop or youtube. What should I be doing? I'm envious of people who just go in an office and know what to do from the get go, it's like magic.. but I don't have that skill.. what should I be doing? I have no idea how to start/run a company, nor do sales, and managing people I'm a complete noob. Any help out there? Much appreciate a response, I'm really frustrated.

I built a site that uses AI to generate royalty-free piano music you can use in your videos/projects

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I've been playing around with AI/machine learning to generate music so I built a site (https://www.deepsoundsai.com) to make the tech more accessible so people could find musical inspiration or use it in their projects. The algorithm I used is trained on around 10,000 hours of piano music. The songs can be hit or miss, but some turn out surprisingly well. I'm curious to see if people find this useful and would love any feedback.

    Putting together the right recipe?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:11 PM PDT

Do you look at businesses like looking at a popular product and making a few tweaks? For example I am starting to see people put high quality pour over coffee (similar to instant coffee, but good) into tea bags. If I am looking at making a product like this coffee example I would do market research to figure all the ways people make drinks (tea, coffee, mixed drinks, coffee machines, common coffee/tea making techniques). Then slowly sketch in a unique product, at the great price.

As a new company you want to see what things people already like as inspiration? Making a business model, and marketing plan that works. The goal is to just analyze and put something in that you have some calculated idea will work. Then play around with it, and build a business when you get traction.

    Let's talk small e-commerce shipping

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:08 AM PDT

I started an e-commerce store that sells soap online. Straight forward enough, but I'm in the dark when it comes to lowering shipping and handling costs as a small business.

I'm interested in setting up an account with either UPS/Fedex/USPS to be able to ship single bars of soap (in a 4"x4" box that weighs ~7 oz.) across the United States at a rate that won't bankrupt me.

From my experience shipping small packages the cost seems far too high ($10-15) for a similar sized package if done in a one-off manner and the local shipping stores are only franchises of these carriers so they don't seem to even know how to go about setting up a new shipping account.

I am hopeful someone could chime in with some advice on how to get a reasonable shipping rate setup (is between $2-7 per package even possible?) and which of the three options above might be my best bet given I am shipping a perishable but not restricted product and expect to ship between 100-1000 of these packages per month.

How Long Did It Take From Conception To Opening Day For You?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:28 PM PDT

I've been feeling a bit dejected lately. I've had a dream to start a business (it's a professional haunted house, so pretty unusual). But I'm losing a bit of momentum. I've always wanted to do this since I was 10 (I'm 27 now), and have actively been planning it (blueprints, business plan, research) since 2016. At this point, I'm still not sure when we can open (it's all based on saving up or getting lucky with funding). Is 5+ years a reasonable time to save up/plan to start a business? How long did it take you?

    Starting SaaS platform - domain?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:28 PM PDT

Hey folks, I am into starting my SaaS platform really soon. The thing I wanted to ask is: Do I have to care about trademarks / patents? I have found a great domain, which is surprisingly available.

I have also predeveloped a simple landing page which fits really good to that specific domain. I have searched the Google for the company with same name as my domain's name, it seems like there is no match. I live in EU right now.

I dont think its worth to create a company / trademarks for that specific name for now. Am I right? If not, I would love to be corrected.

    Thanks a lot!

Need help setting up shipping and packing.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Okay, my business involves getting discounted technology like iPads, games, iPhone, consoles, laptops from retailers on a discount. Then holding them at a reshipper until someone buys them.

I will be using pickup/delivery services. So I can get a higher quantity at one time. The question is there a service that will allow them to drop them off at a specific location. Then have the business pack and ship it off to the reshipper?

This is one area that I'm stuck on and I don't know who or what kind of business to turn to on this situation. I would hirer people but I don't have the money at this point to do that or I would!

Is 39% labor cost too high for architecture firm?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:16 PM PDT

I run a small architecture firm and I'm trying to hire my first really qualified employee. Adding in her requested salary might push me to a 39% labor cost out of total income. We have historically been about 30% but we've spent a good budget on infrastructure and we're finally hitting a stride. I'd like to be conservative in this day and age but I could really use some reliable talent and she seems like a great fit.

Advice for growing my modest operation

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:49 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I need help with expanding my small operation. I've had a modest side hustle for a couple years now. It does ok when I release art, apparel, merch and random accessories. I think I've made a dent in the niche market I'm involved in and I have a small returning customer base. For the most part I spend a couple hours a week on it outside of my full time job. Moving forward I am currently not working due to covid. I've had some free time and I am considering turning this into a bigger operation. I currently make all apparel and do all the art myself. I have no business background and I often get overwhelmed cause I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't even know where to start when thinking about expanding. I know what I'm doing has potential to grow but I feel like I lack the business side of things to keep pushing forward. Does anyone have any advice, or can anyone suggest some books or podcasts that'll point me in the right direction?

Thank you so much for your time.

Advice for finding and sticking to business ideas

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:33 PM PDT

I don't know where to start with this except to say that I need advice. I want to start a business, but really cannot seem to stay focused. My ultimate motivation in doing so is to make more money for my family and career freedom.

Below is a list of stuff I've dabbled in

    • E Courses
    • Amazon E book sales (only made a few but they do actually bring in decent beer money a month)
    • Youtube (have about 2k subscribers)
    • Blog / Niche Website
    • Licensing / Product Development
    • Podcasting
    • Considered Real Estate

These are just a few and I realize this looks a little ridiculous (and stereotypical of internet $ making), but ultimately I want something to work towards, but I keep talking myself out of various things. I'm confident that if I really focus in one of the those areas I could gradually progress, but a number of things eventually derail me from staying on track. This includes second guessing the actual goal, losing interest, and ultimately just considering if it's worth my time and effort. On top of this I have a family to care for and a stable (yet flexible) job.

My ultimate question is how do you guys choose what to focus on? They're so many angles, competition, and variables in just the things listed above that I know I to have a genuine passion about what to discuss. I don't think I'm short on things to pursue, but I just don't have one that takes up all my motivation.

    Commission for Biz Dev partner

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:25 PM PDT

Hello. I'm looking for some strategic advice. My main partner and I have been working on a project for about four years now. Around two years ago we brought on a business development partner. We gave him equity in the company making him a minority partner. Things were going well at first. But lately it seems our biz dev partner has stalled. My other partner and I have spent the last 6 months busting our butts to get our product as good as its ever been and we're ready to push, push, PUSH, the sales. On our last few standup calls I've discussed as much with our Biz Dev partner and I keep getting the same response which is essentially "we can walk through it on our next call." I genuinely trust our Biz Dev partner and really believe that he can do great things for our company, but I'm not convinced he's pulling as hard as myself and my original partner.

I'm looking for some advice/best practices on equity + commission for a Biz Dev person. Currently our Biz Dev person is equity only (like my original partner and I). But my original partner and I have been discussing incentivizing our Biz Dev partner with a commission.

And I GENUINELY apologize if I've missed the mark entirely already. I sincerely want to do what is best for everyone. I'm looking for some (calm and polite) advice please. Is equity alone enough for a Biz Dev person? Should we add commission on top? If so, what's the going rate for someone in a sales position that also has equity in the company? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

Stealing Your Employers Client - My Moral Compass is Spinning.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I currently work for an employee benefits consulting firm but curre tky applying for my license to start operating next year.

I planned are starting from scratch and accumulating my own clients and aiming for smaller businesses (versus bigger companies that my employer targets). But I'm very close with an HR director at one of our biggest clients, she even offered me a position at their company. Anyways I declined the position because I'm planning to open my own firm. She then said she'd be happy to move their business over (health insurance) because she prefers our work relationship and trusts me.

Here in lies the problem, I don't want to burn bridges and I'd feel terrible "stealing" one of their biggest clients.

Would it be a dick move? Has anyone been in similar positions?
