    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Jun 25, 2020

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

[meta] A ban on "calm down" and "listen here kiddo" advice posts

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:55 AM PDT

We get at least one, sometimes more, per day, that boil down to "learn some basic portfolio management," "don't do stupid shit with options if you're stupid and new," "calm down," "calm down," "CALM DOWN," and "markets don't move in a straight line."

Can we ban these kinds of meaningless karma-whoring self-stroking "AdViCe" posts please

Ohhhh boy I regretted selling at 20.30 so I went and bought in at 22.80. Apart from increase in money, I personally hope they actually develop a vaccine so we can finally rest and not be scared of walking out the house.

When doing DD, what do you look for specifically?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:11 PM PDT

Due diligence is one of the smartest approach to trading. But it's hard to know what to look at when you don't know the particular stock.

What do you look for when looking into investing in a company?

Are there any numbers or ratios that you like to see before trading?

What websites do you use to examine stocks you aren't familiar with?

How helpful is reading the quarterly report?

Mom just got a call from an E*TRADE broker saying draft kings is going down to a dollar?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I think this is a scam but I can't look into it at the moment. My mom just called frantic about sell draft. We both have like 50 shares. She said an E*TRADE broker called asking her if she knew the news on the stock. And that she should sell because it will go down to a dollar?

Don't sell draft but did anyone get this call? Or is there something coming up for this stock? So confused.

    AMD Good Buy?

    IPO tracker?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:34 AM PDT

Is there a tool to track IPO dates and market info? There's a few big IPOs this year and I can't find any dates, expected prices, analyst ratings, anything — just fluff hype pieces "could THIS be the biggest IPO of the year!?" type stuff.

Is there a reliable way to know about IPO dates more than 24 hours in advance at the very least?

No specifics about the truck, and Pence's speech sounded like a campaign rally more than talking about a future with EV trucks. Last hope is that they get the USPS contract. Very disappointed. And the stocks are showing.

INO: How to identify the top / continued uptrend?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:44 PM PDT

    Hi everyone:

INO stock has gone up a lot, from $15 close on Mon 6/22 to $34 close today (Thu 6/25) (3-day graph). In particular, the stock went up from $25 to $34 today (1-day graph).

    Questions:

    1. During intraday trading today, how could someone tell - using technical analysis or any other method - that the stock would continue going up to close at $34, after hitting intraday pivot highs of $26, $29, and $30? Similarly for intraday trading on Tues and Wed - the stock hit multiple pivot highs, but continued going upwards to close at highs.
    2. Over the past 3 days, the stock has continued go up and up. On Tues, after the stock closed +40%, how would someone be able to tell that the stock would continue going up in the coming days? Same question for Wed, after stock closed up +10%.

    Thanks!!

Fed puts restrictions on bank dividends after test finds some banks could be stressed in pandemic

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:33 PM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/25/fed-puts-restrictions-on-bank-dividends-after-test-finds-some-banks-could-be-stressed-in-pandemic.html

The Federal Reserve put new restrictions on the U.S. banking industry Thursday after its annual stress test found that several banks could get uncomfortably close to minimum capital levels in scenarios tied to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Fed said in a release that big banks will be required to suspend share buybacks and cap dividend payments at their current level for the third quarter of this year. The regulator also said that it would only allow dividends to be paid based on a formula tied to a bank's recent earnings.

Furthermore, the industry will be subject to ongoing scrutiny: For the first time in the decade-long history of the stress test, banks will have to resubmit their payout plans again later this year.

Under the harsher scenarios, banks could rack up as much as $700 billion in loan losses as unemployment hits 19.5%, a development that would push some banks close to their regulatory minimums for capital.

I can't take it anymore. I feel like I'm losing money either way. Every single day is red.

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 09:05 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I started investing on 14th of February 2019. Why so late? Because for more than 10 years I was afraid of the stock market and knew nothing about it.

But then I read a lot of books, websites, 10q, EC etc and I invested in 20-35 companies that were according to me pretty strong . Energy, Tech and pharma.

In a year I was +40% (+80k) and was pretty happy. I'm more of a long term investor but I told myself that if a crash happens then I will try to gain some money on the way down by trading. Then Covid-19 struck and at the beginning I told myself, it's ok you'll get pass that without issue. I waited, waited and waited for a FED response until I couldn't wait anymore and:

    • Between 28 Feb 10 March : sold most of my stocks losing 20k of profit in the process.
    • 20 March: Seeing that the stocks are still plummeting on the 20th march I bought inverse ETF and an index tracking VIX. Looking at historical data the recession or depression will be felt for at least a year. Then Jpow announced the relief on the 23rd.
    • 04-07 April: To hedge in case it is not a dead cat bounce I bought some tech and energy stock.
    • 05 June: I was certain it is a dead cat bounce and that covid won't magically disappear. I waited a month, then a second one and on on June 6 I said "Fuck it" it is a V shaped recovery and I sold 90% of my inverse ETF and VIX to buy stocks and sp500 ETF. (lost another -30k waiting for the crash)
    • Today: Now, a month after I bought at 2998, sp500 is almost at 3000. Over the last 3 weeks I lost another 10k.

So from +80k in February 2020 now I'm only +20k compared to last year. So this year I already lost 60k.

Can someone tell me WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON WITH THE STOCK MARKET?! FUCKIN MONTHS OF STUDYING THE STOCK MARKETS, THE FUNDAMENTALS, READING THE EC FOR THIS TO BE JUST THROWN AWAY. AND IN THE MEANTIME BILLIONAIRES ARE MAKING MONEY LEFT AND RIGHT AND /R/WSB IS MAKING +200K A DAY IN OPTIONS.

NOW, NOW AFTER FUCKIN 4 MONTH, FINALLY THE STOCK MARKET WILL FOLLOW THE ECONOMY WHEN EVERYONE WAS SAYING THAT BOTH ARE DISCONNECTED AND ANY BAD OR GOOD NEWS MAKES THE STOCK MARKET GO UP. NOW IT FINALLY DECIDED TO GO DOWN?

    What a fuckin rollercoaster.

I feel like everyone is more intelligent and better than me. Can someone with a brain explain why FINALLY NOW the stock market decided to go down?

    WHY It'S noT PRiCed In!?!

Thank you for coming to me TEDx

Opinion: the best recovery play is $MA

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 11:50 AM PDT

$MA and it's more stable cousin $V process a ton of discretionary transactions (cruise, airlines, hotels) as well as international transactions which both are currently negative YoY, but they are also processing more "traditional" transactions via e-commerce growth, digital payments, etc.

With global economic recovery likely in the next few years, an increased normalization of electronic payments via debit or credit cards, and some promising patents surrounding digital USD networks (basically a US endorsed stable-coin) and blockchain data-logging, why is this not the best recovery play? I know 35 P/E sounds like a steep valuation, but is it really?

Need some opinions? Thanks in advance.

    RTX rollercoaster

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I had bought RTX back in early april for 57 and thought it was a really good deal. Almost 3 months later it lays at 61, which has been lackluster compared to my other positions.

Where is this stock going? Should I just get my gains?

And I don't get why BA hasn't crashed as hard as RTX when it's a riskier stock.

    SPOT the next NFLX?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:23 AM PDT

Spotify has a similar business model to Netflix and the are both leaders of their industry. There was fear for both companies that other companies would be able to release superior streaming services, but time and time again these two end up on top of the competition. I think that SPOT has no where near reached its potential. Thoughts?
