    Buying a small software company

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:16 PM PDT

I own 20% of the small software company I work at. I purchased the shares from one of the co-founders that was looking for an exit, when the company was at a low point. We now have an interested buyer and I am considering making an offer.

Would it be possible to get around $800k financed somehow (SBA 7(a) loan?) I've been at this company for 6 years, and have basically been running 80% of the show since the founders are all semi-retired. I know what it takes to grow our revenue and net income, but it's difficult to do when dealing with the other owners.

A lot of my net worth is in retirement accounts, and I bought my home 2 years ago so don't have a ton of equity.

Does anybody know a payment service that does NOT keep fees on refunds?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:07 PM PDT

We ~thought~ Booqable.com with Stripe integration was a good choice for our rental company, as they claimed to take security deposits. Turns out, not only does the "security deposit" go to our bank account like a normal charge which we have to manually refund, BUT Stripe also keeps the fees on the original purchase. Does anybody know of a payment service that might work better for us? Also open to suggestions on taking security deposits!

    Small Business Shipping in Australia

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:03 PM PDT

    Hi all,
My startup company will sell small bottles (will fit into your palm and weigh less than 100g) of over the counter medication to treat vertigo, migraines and related symptoms. We are based in Sydney, Australia and plan to ship these bottles domestically and internationally for online purchases. What would be the best postage carrier for this product?
It looks like Australia Post charges a flat $8 for anything up to 500g which seems like a bit of a waste. The other carriers don't seem to have much of a presence around Sydney either.

Is accepting a “grant” as a new LLC considered taxable income?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:01 PM PDT

Starting a new business that is based off a lot of clientele I've had in the past working for someone else.

Today I received an email from one of those clients who appreciated what I was doing, and how it would affect her kids, and how she knew the what I was doing wasn't necessarily for financial gain. He is offering me $25,000 as a no strings attached anonymous grant on top of paying for regular services. I know this person fairly well and love the family, but I'm obviously in shock.

What are the tax implications? Is this initial funding. . .like a "gift" which wouldn't be taxable? (Well it would but well below personal exclusions), or is this just considered income even though no service is being exchanged? I mean realistically even if it's taxable the majority if not all of it will be used for expenses but I'm still curious about how it's seen.

Selling to local shops in the UK

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:52 AM PDT

I recently started selling an item online and would like to reach out to local shops (small game stores) to see if they would be interested in stocking my item since I feel it would perform very well there.

Are there any legal implications I need to be aware of when dealing with a shop, do I need to register my business or anything else?

    Many thanks.

edit: Thank you everyone for your responses it has been great amount of help.

What’s the best way to set up a desktop server that all computers can access files from?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:44 AM PDT

I'm not too great with the technological terms so forgive me for likely butchering basic concepts.

Basically I am a partner in a small agricultural research business. It would be much more convenient to set up a dedicated (actual computer itself), or a server that is password protected and is accessible by users both on the same network, but ideally with the option to be able to remotely connect from my house (literally 2 blocks away) and continue my work from there if I decide to relax in my bed while responding to email communications, or whatever other mindless task I can do but need access to particular files that I may not know I need until I actually need them, quite a frustrating task

Maybe this isn't the right sub to post in so if anyone has any better recommendations I'd apologize it, thanks!

How to do PR Packages on Insta?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:39 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I just started a small business on Etsy for stickers. Not the most revolutionary, but just wanted to try it out for some extra cash on the side and to save up for college. One of my plans is to send stickers over to Instagrammers in exchange for them making a post about it. Is there any way that I can send a free package over to them? I don't want to ask for their address in an Instagram DM after talking with them for only 2 minutes, I think that would creep anyone out. Or maybe I'm taking the completely wrong approach to this? I'm still very new to this so I am open to learning :-)

Looking for tips on making a consumer friendly product return policy for an online shop.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:27 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I'm currently helping a friend build their online shop and she asked me to assist her with making a return policy for products ordered in the shop.

I'm looking into a policy that would be friendly enough to ease buyer's remorse fears on the customer but also not be too punishing for the business owner.

The shop is based on handcrafted bags and purses. Any tips on pointers to create this policy or even where to find examples of similar online business policies would be appreciated.

I'm looking into figuring out the following specifically:

    • amount of time the customer is allowed to return the product. 30 days, 60 days, 90 days? Etc etc.
    • guidelines on giving a refund to the customer, example: if giving a full refund, how much time should pass before that's not possible, after that would it move to a partial refund or no refund at all?
    • guidelines on how to handle the customer shipping the product back to the business, do they pay the shipping or we provide the label?
    • how to handle customers reporting defective products, do we do refund or replacement or offer either/or?

Thank you everyone for your time reading this post and I look forward to your comments! Have a great day everyone!

    Small Business legalities

Hi guys, any advice on somewhere I could get free templates for a Privacy policy, GDPR, cookie policy and a return policy?

I'm looking at other similar businesses (there's nothing like mine) any their policies seem poor and unprofessional.

I’m at a loss of what to do next..

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:59 PM PDT

Hello all, I'm in the middle of designing a product and I'm kind of unsure where to go from here. So, I have little money due to being laid-off since the middle of march, but I have a product I'm designing that I believe in.

One of my friends did some basic drafting for me and I'm okay with bringing on a partner to help in developing the product further. I'm just unsure of how to go about doing it.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank anyone in advance

Adding more of my personal money into a partnership business

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:07 AM PDT

I'm there, I'm hoping someone can explain this to me. Or maybe give me some insight on exactly what it is I'm doing and what the future outcome of it could be.

I'm not very business savvy. But me and my friend decided to create a business partnership. We opened up a business just recently and started off with adding our own money into the business accounts. Spreaded out 50/50. my business partner would be the one who is actually working there and dealing with operations day-to-day. So she will get paid for that accordingly.

we didn't realize this, but we needed more money. so we decided that I would add more of my own money from my personal account. About $30,000 into the equity of the business. And that she would take a deduction in $30,000 worth of pay for the year.

It took me a lot of time to think about this, but my own personal money that I injected into our business account is post tax.

Is this a fair decision for both of us? Or am I the one who is losing on this?

If you have any suggestions, please comment and let me know.

    Shipping items

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:17 AM PDT

Hi everyone, sorry in advance if this is a dumb question. I am trying to start a jewelry shop on Etsy and I've done some research about printing labels through their website but I've never shipped an item of my own before. If you buy and print a label off of their website do you just go to the post office and drop it off like you would when you return an amazon package? Or is there more to it? I'm new to this so excuse my lack of knowledge 😞

Good idea to use same name for both businesses?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:45 PM PDT

Been selling at flea market and using a name for my business (as it appears on the sellers permit, name i do business under) and I'm the process of opening a store. Should I name it the same name I'm using for my license for the flea market? Will this complicate things when it comes to tax time/making it difficult to keep track of expenses etc? Part of me wants to keep it seperate and sell at the flea market under x name while having the store under y, but having the same name might be easier in tracking expenses/ receipts etc.

I am looking for 5 times EBIDTA as we have been established 20 plus year company with good reputation. Just have no clue what to do as I am moving to another country. At the moment located in UAE. Lost for options.

For that im gonna start small and build myself a website to promote it to whatever adds and means. My first step is how to get started on building a website from zero experience. If anyone is interested in being active and helping, feel free to message.

As small business owners, do you work on developing your strengths?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:13 AM PDT

I've recently come across several talent assessments for small business owners. These are psychological tests that help you define your strengths, limiting beliefs and stuff. The promise is "it will help you boost your productivity and performance". I'm not sure if they are really helpful. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Mini book recommendation (for a mastermind gift)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:57 AM PDT

I'm starting two Masterminds and I want to send each person a small giftbox to start. So far I have a nice journal and fun pen, and some other small creative pieces. I also wanted to send a small book - that doesn't feel like homework but could be an inspiring/creative/fun short read. I was thinking something along the lines of Derek Sivers Anything you Want or Seth Godin's Purple Cow, or even something like We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Basically, looking for a literal small book that is creative and likely hasn't been on folks' radar. Any suggestions?

Inventory management when selling in brick and mortar shop and on a marketplace (for example eBay)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:00 PM PDT

Hi, hope all is well. I hope this hasn't been answered before, I have searched beforehand.

I work in a brick and mortar shop and we are not sure how confident customers will be coming to the premises due to Covid. We want to make an eBay shop selling the same items that we sell in-store. Is there a system where we can manage the stock whilst selling in-store and online? I don't want to be in negative stock and have to place an order with wholesalers just to fulfil one order.

Currently, the only inventory in place is a spreadsheet.

    Thanks in advance.

    Monorim distributorship open

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:10 AM PDT

Edit: not sure if this is the correct sub... I have this distributorship now and I'm wanting to sell it to someone who can do more with it...

I am currently a Monorim distributor (we make custom parts for the electric kick scooter industry) in the US. My job was to build a retailer network here but honestly, I just not connected enough to the US market to pull this off. I would like to go back to focusing on the Philippines and a few other projects of mine. I'm also an engineer by nature and I think that's hampering my ability to market this out correctly.

I currently have 150(ish) units of the V2 and V2 Pro in a warehouse in Missouri. If you're interested, let me know and I'll wholesale them to you, give you the eBay and Amazon listings as well as the Shopify store.

We could also do an arrangement where I retain some ownership of the new company and stay on as a technical advisor, your link to Monorim etc... I'm open to ideas, this just takes a skillset I'm simply not the best at :)

Anyway, let's talk if you're interested. I would like to know that you have contacts in the US and some ability to market these correctly.

    andrew@ecoride.ph is my email.

Employee wants a week off during our busy season?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:21 PM PDT

TLDR should I give a full time employee a week off to travel to celebrate his brothers high school graduate?

The employee is 19 and he works for me as a summer job.

It's his 2nd year here. He's a great employee does everything phenomenally.

He asked for a week off in the middle of July when it's our busiest time. him leaving for a week will leave us extremely short-handed.

As a employer he signed up for a full-time job and that means going to work.

As a person I don't want to know him time with his family. Our season to make money is literally 3 months, and I don't have enough staff to cover him.

    What should I do
