How to Sell Merchandise without Stocking It

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:52 PM PDT

I own business that provides non-tangible services over the internet. I want to keep people interested and make them feel valued with things they can receive and touch, like T-shirts or coffee mugs with my logo on them.

I know I can order a million in bulk and ship out one by one (clients live around the US, not always local), but I'm looking for a website where I can design products that my clients can buy directly from the manufacturer, without having to store things at my home or go to the post office every day.

    Suggestions?

What are your thoughts on going towards being a manufacturer, wholesalers, importer & exporter or being in the service industry, or ecommerce selling a physical product online. Any industry.

Which one do you believe works best for you and why? Which do you think is the one to go for now if any?

    Viable small business?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:36 AM PDT

Hi all, I own a commercial property in a town centre here in the UK. It's a 3 story building, with a retail area on the ground floor, and room for offices of various sizes on the other floors. It's been leased out to a launderette for the last few years, but they've just text me to say that they're not reopening after lockdown, giving me just a few days notice before handing keys back (the lease doesnt expire for another 2.5 years, but that's another matter).

I've got an idea to install barbers/hairdressers chairs on the ground floor, and to allow the upstairs areas to be leased out on a monthly basis for use by beauticians/nail technicians etc. The plan is to rent out the barbers/hairdressers chairs on a weekly basis to self employed people, with all bills included. There are a lot of people renting chairs on an individual basis in the local area, but only in established salons. I can undercut the prices they pay to rent, although of course they wont have the established name of the salons to rely on (for a while at least).

My question is, do you think this is a viable business and can you offer any suggestions/advice/criticisms of the idea?

Note that it is not meant to be my main source of income, only a side project. Also, I own the building with no mortgage, but will need to invest a fair amount of money in facilities. Thank you for any input!

Can I rent space from myself for my own business?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:46 PM PDT

Hi there, I have a side business running a small product company. I currently rent space at a warehouse for $500 a month and I pay a single Employee about $600 a month that works about 7-10 hours a week. The employee handles most of our mail order stuff from our website and we pretty much use the warehouse space for storage. Our products are not very large to our space is about the size of a bedroom with a lot of shelves.

I recently switched distributors and now I need a bit less space as the stuff is spending less time in my warehouse and pretty much just moving straight to the distributor. I am wondering if I can move my warehouse space to a spare bedroom at my house and possibly lay off my employee and save the business around $1000 a month and possibly contribute that money towards my mortgage?

    Employee covid sick time abuse

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:33 PM PDT

So we are a small business not normally required to cover sick pay. Since the C19 pandemic, it was mandated any covid related illness is eligible for sick pay.

I have an employee who took a week of PTO, and traveled out of state. Who cares right?

Prior to their departure, the governor issued a 'mandatory voluntary' 2 week quarantine when returning to our home state from their destination.

I feel like I know the answer, but, am I going to have to pay their sick time on their return?

Feels like I am yet again getting screwed for doing the right thing.

Everyone’s thought on the metropolitans’ recovery post COVID?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:19 PM PDT

We were planning on opening an Asian style cafe before COVID in Chicago downtown, loop and COVID happened and we had to postpone the project.

Thank lord we were only in LOI so we did not have a lease to worry about... (Sorry for you all who had to deal with lease right now).

What are your thoughts on the metropolitans recovering post COVID? Will people even consider going back to work in downtown?

My friends in the Fintech, financial, and designs are not going back to their downtown office anytime soon and still able to work from home since March. Is there a point for people going back to work in Downtown? If not, how is this going to transform the metropolitans?

Question about finding or creating graphics for my service website.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:02 AM PDT

Hello community, thank you for all that you do to help small business owners who are getting started.

I am starting a mobile auto detailing business currently and wondering how I can find someone that can do some simple graphic design. I have a third party CRM/field service management software I will be linking customers to from my website and need photos next to the services. Here is a website with examples of what I'm looking for: https://www.parkplaceautosalon.com/

I have considered buying photoshop or some program that I could make these with, but would rather hire someone to do it. Where and how would I find someone that can do this kind of work? I used fiverr for my logo design but am having trouble figuring out what to search for to find someone that can do this kind of job. Thank you to anyone who can help.

Can't create an LLC in Canada.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:56 PM PDT

Hi, I'm a 17 year old living in Canada. For the past couple months, I've been researching on how to start a drop shipping business using Shopify. The only problem I have (you probably guessed by looking at my my age) is that I'm 17, and Shopify doesn't allow people under 18. I did look into other ways on how I can solve this.

Option 1) Operate the business under my parents name; thereby using their SSN#. However, this isnt a good option, as my parents would be taxed if I ever (hopefully I do) make any money

Option 2) Create an LLC and use the EIN in my Shopify business. With the LLC, I could have a member that's over 18 (ex: my dad), while I could be the owner. The only problem is I live in Canada, and Canada doesn't have LLC's (it's viewed as an "upper class" thing to have). And even if I tried to make one, the initial set up fees and maintenance fees are extremely expensive.

Any suggestions on how I can resolve this issue. I mean, I can make the Shopify account under my name, but Shopify will close the website the moment I open it. If you guys have any suggestion, I would really appreciate it.

I need advice on starting/rebranding my business.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 08:57 PM PDT

Hello! Thank you for clicking (or tapping) on my post! So a bit of background information:

Last year I posted like 2 things on this app called Poshmark. It's nothing major, just a sweater and a hoodie. I forgot about it for months until one day I woke up and I had an offer on my sweater. At this point, I didn't really understand how the app worked, but I counter offered them for a price that was a dollar higher, and they accepted and I got an email telling me I had made a sale. I was very excited because I had never had any successful business endeavors besides this one and I've been looking for a job or a way to make money on my own independent of my parents but I wasn't having any luck finding anything flexible to my schedule as I'm busy with high school. After a while I started listing more items, expanding to different platforms, and getting more sales. One day my aunt came to visit, and she saw how my business was going, and she along with my other aunt decided to invest. They bought me stuff to package my items as well as business cards to put into my packages.

    Fast forward to the present:

I haven't been making as many sales and I started to get to thinking. I don't want to sell or resell used and new clothes for the foreseeable future because eventually, I'm going to run out of clothes to sell. I also don't want to start having to buy clothes just for the purpose of hiking up the price on them and I don't want to contribute to the fast fashion industry. After having a conversation with one of my close friends, I came to the conclusion that I want to start re-branding my brand and distance myself from the re-selling industry. I have an idea of what I want to start selling but I don't know where to start. I want to start selling candles and wax melts and probably expand from there. The thing is, I don't know where to start. I've made candles before for personal use, so I have some sort of idea of how to make the candles. But what I'm really having trouble with is how to start and kick off my new business venture like where to start selling, how to get my brand out there, how much should I spend, etc. Any advice would help me out a lot! Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Tl;Dr: I want to move away from re-selling clothes on Poshmark/Mercari and start selling candles and wax melts, but I don't know where to start.

    Starting a gelateria

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:30 AM PDT

    Hello all,

First off just a little background, I am in the typical phase of life (approaching 30, bored of my job in a large company, doing something I don't enjoy) and have always had a thought in the back of my mind to open a gelateria/ gelato shop/ italian ice cream parlor. I was wondering if anyone here has had some experience in this specific area, any lessons learnt, any tips etc? The area I have my eyes on, I have already done some scouting and there aren't any gelaterias, the locals don't know much about italian ice cream, so I really have a shot here if done well and authentic I believe.

    Thanks yall Much love

Looking to start a side hustle doing small appliance repair. Wondering how viable you all think my idea could be and what my best advertising platform would be?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 06:10 PM PDT

Like the title says, i want to start a small side hustle doing small appliance repair. I have fixed everything from stereos, to tvs, toasters, blenders, docking stations, computers, etc. and i rarely encounter something i can't fix. What's more is i enjoy the challenge. I think i could maybe make a few bucks off of this skill I have a few questions of opinion/personal experience:

    1. Say you had an expensive appliance that broke and you really liked it, what would be a reasonable price for you to consider repairing it? Would you be more apt to do it/pay more if i offered free pickup/dropoff?

    2. Any of you have experience advertising on craigslist? I want to cast my line out on this platform and see how it works out before starting a fully-fledged business.

    3. Do you think people would actually seek out such a service? Is it cheap enough to just buy something new that this wouldn't even be viable?

    SBA Beware!

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:56 PM PDT

So I was checking my account earlier this morning as I was working late until about 06:00 trying to keep afloat taking on any jobs I can to pay my bills and noticed an extra $2,000 in my personal checking account. I use my personal account as my business account because I didn't get to incorporate properly this year due to covid. So I've been operating with my ein and a dedicated personal account.

Then suddenly at exactly 17:00 CST I get a notification that my account is overdrawn. .

The bank stated I was to be referred to the attorney general's office and speak to sba. So it's Friday evening, I have no access to my bank accounts, and I was to go on a vacation this week. All of my accounts (other banks too and credit cards) are frozen.

Looks like I'm cashing in my silver guys.
