18 wheeler did a hit and run on my vehicle, refusing to cooperate. How do I proceed. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:41 PM PDT An 18 wheeler did a hit and run on my truck that was caught by cameras at my job (diff companies all on same lot. I wasn't present. His company information is clearly visible on his truck in the video. He's aware, and his boss is aware, that he hit me. They seemed to be cooperating at first but are pretty much refusing to work with me now. I've looked up information over this but it seems like I'm out of luck in this situation. However, since it wasn't in his personal vehicle, it was in a company work truck, do I have more options? The police report was made before I knew who hit me and they said I could press charges if I wanted. I was going to settle with his work insurance covering my damages and leaving it at that. BTW, my insurance is already getting my truck fixed. I really just want my deductible covered and for him to be held responsible. I was being the bigger person by refusing to press charges at first but I don't see another way. Shouldn't his company be obligated to provide their business insurance for their employees accident? Thanks for any help! (Fort Worth, Texas) [link] [comments] |
Knocked down a pole in company truck, received $6k bill and late fee 1.5 years later Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:17 PM PDT California In October 2018, my husband knocked down a light pole in his company truck. He called the cops and they gave him a citation and dealt with the damage. Just now we received a bill dated June 17, 2020 from the city for $6k dated and due May 14 2020, and then a month's interest for $70. The bill says the unpaid damage accrues at 12% a year and the late penalty accrues at 120% a year. My husband no longer works for the company, but I would imagine the bill would be paid by them, since it was their truck. We used to have Geico as our personal auto insurance when the incident occurred, but it wasn't comprehensive. Am right in thinking I should contact his former company's HR department? Also, am I right in thinking the late penalty is wrong because we did not receive an invoice from May? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:36 PM PDT Hi All, my therapist claimed that she is in network before I started the sessions mid of 2019. I also checked on my insurance company's website and called insurance company for verification if my therapist is in network. They all checked out she is in network at that time, so I signed up for the sessions to deal with depression. After 14 sessions, in around December 2019, my therapist told me she will be out of network in 2020 so I ended it. Surprise, surprise, I found out that the originally processed in network claims turned to out of network all of a sudden. My therapist also tried to claim sessions I cancelled (with an cancellation fee) and one session three months before my first session. I called the insurance company and they started investigation, turns out that my therapist is out of network since 2018. I confronted my therapist and she is still very sure that she is in network until 2020. I now have a claim of 2450 dollars of medical debt contrast of what I should only pay 10% of the in net work services. I started first level of appeal from the insurance company, and today I got the denial letter saying that according to their record, my therapist is out of network since 2018 so they cannot overturn their decision. I already offered them the evidence that the insurance company's website where my therapist is listed in network, my therapist email chain showing that both of them were identified as in network. Now I have three questions there: 1. How would I succeed in the second level appeal since I have provided the evidences to the insurance company? It seems like that the insurance company only okay with what they have found out. 2. I live in NJ but my plan is national plan, so the normal NJ law of appeal does not apply to them(according to the insurance person). How can I get hold of them doing higher levels appeals (external review etc.) 3. I don't have the reference number when I first called the insurance company to verify my therapist in and out of network plan. How can I obtain evidence of this? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
My doctor is overcharging insurance company Posted: 26 Jun 2020 02:32 AM PDT Hi all, I recently moved to a new city, I chose a new doctor for my ADHD prescription medications after a bit of difficulty, as most of the doctors who accept my insurance were not accepting new patients. I used to visit my previous doctor once every two months, As I'm used to dealing with my medical condition for quite some time now. However, my current (new) doctor is insisting on talking to him every week even when there is no need. Due to COVID situations, I personally visited him at his office only twice in the last two months, only when I needed my prescriptions. Remaining all the sessions happened over the phone, we usually talk for less than 10 minutes over the phone. He charges $ 500 - $ 600 for each time we talk and claims I visited his office(200$) and he provided consultation for 45 minutes- 60 minutes($300-400) in the insurance claim he files. Though my co-pay is low, I do not like what he is doing, and I'm afraid to talk to the insurance company, or him as I'm afraid I will not be able to find a new doctor. Is it common for doctors to overcharge insurance companies like this? Please provide any suggestions on how I can deal with this situation. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:05 AM PDT Three years ago, I asked for advice on an incident I had with a UHaul. Thank you all for your advice. What happened since then is mostly uneventful, but nevertheless wanted to update since this forum was useful. A claim was filed with Repwest, UHaul's insurance company, as well as my insurance company. Due to the weight limits on my normal auto insurance policy, the claim never went further there. They might have issued a denial or told me to screw off, but I do not remember. Repwest was generally unhelpful to me and the person I hit. After a week or so, I never heard back from Repwest, and the person who's car I hit became less impatient and less demanding that we personally pay to fix his car. A few weeks later, his car was repaired and we never spoke about it again. I think, given how demanding the car owner was about repairs, that Repwest ended up paying for the repairs to his car. I'm not sure if this was because the car owner initiated action through his insurance, or Repwest decided to be more helpful, which does not seem likely given their reputation. The statute of limitations for any civil action resulting from this incident passed over the past few days. Lesson learned: Hire insured professional movers, rent a truck that falls under an auto insurance policy, or make sure that you buy insurance that covers damage to property you might hit when you're driving a massive truck. Edit: LocationBot, I am in New York. [link] [comments] |
Identity Fraud / Medical Identity Theft - How do Insurance Companies Prevent This? Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:22 AM PDT I recently learned about medical identity theft and was surprised to learn it's even a thing. https://www.amfam.com/resources/articles/understanding-insurance/medical-identity-theft Wouldn't this get stopped when someone tries to make a claim in your name or a fake name? I figured if they use my name then there's some sort of cross check that takes place with the adjuster. Like how my car insurance works and it involves pictures, reports, and I've even had an adjuster come out to see damaged before. Likewise, if it's a fake person making a claim wouldn't the adjuster simply lookup their SSN? What is being done to detect this? What recourse do policyholders have? [link] [comments] |
Car NOT a total loss, but I want it to be Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:18 PM PDT I was in a car accident that caused my vehicle to deploy the side passenger and back seat air bags. My vehicle is being claimed to not be a total loss. I'd honestly prefer the car to be a total loss so I can utilize my GAP insurance and get myself into a car that I will be happy with. This vehicle I will not feel safe in it as the air bags have deployed already. Is it possible to dispute with the insurance and have them claim it's a total loss? EDIT: This took place in San Antonio Texas [link] [comments] |

Kaiser Permanente - Delta Dental of California DHMO (CA) Posted: 25 Jun 2020 08:26 PM PDT Hello, My sister-in-law, who just turned 18, needs orthodontic according to her dentist. But the dentist told us that she cannot use Covered California or Medi-cal since orthodontic are not included. But on here, it says children who are under 19 can use insurance for medically necessary orthodontic. I've been doing some internet searches but cannot find where she could use her Delta Dental of California DHMO. Where should she go to use insurance and get orthodontic? Thank you. Father apparently doesn’t want to add me(20M) to Auto Insurance Policy Posted: 25 Jun 2020 08:11 PM PDT So I'm currently 20M, I live in Maryland and I'm in college rn. I'm car shopping and I've found a 2013 Hyundai Elantra used that I can afford on my own albeit some monthly payments around 180. I make around 800 a month during the fall/spring semester. 1200/month during June/July/August. I'm being quoted by myself 300+ per month for the next 6 months. I haven't directly asked my dad to be put under his policy(EERIE INSURANCE) When I talked about buying the car he said shop for insurance, Everytime we have a car insurance talk and I mention the quotes he just throws another company at me to see if I get a lower quote. Is there even a pt to asking directly since it's almost certain he doesn't want me on it lol. Should I just go for a older car just to get a lower quote. At this point I might just do tht. Any help/suggestions would be great [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:55 PM PDT My extended family has an insurance company that I have been with for 7 years now. This last year my uncle decided to sell the company to his daughters husband who recently became an agent. I recently had a health scare and have been trying to budget my finances in case I have another issue. My cousin is aware of my issues on a family level. I wrote him as I noticed for this year my vehicle went from 60 dollars to 90 dollars a month. I've not been in any accident nor made any claims. When I questioned why the increase I was told that it was the cost of doing business with him. My vehicle is five years old. He tried to claim that repairs make my cost go up? I've had no repairs. I asked him to lower my limits to something more affordable and he refused at first. He's now told me that while he could look at other options it won't change anything. He then proceeded to ask where I live and what's covered? I've lived at the same address for 7 years and the coverage as been the same. My mom thinks he was too lazy to look into my file. I got mad and went to two other insurance companies and both said to me they have no idea what my agent/cousin before was thinking or doing. Both are going to save me significantly. I know I should probably just shut my mouth and move onto to a new company but I'm just pissed at his response to me and I think it's because he's family. I'm not saying he has to treat me like family but apparently I'm not a valued customer. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:43 PM PDT *caught fire My insurance is received cash value, so first question how do I ensure I get the maximum amount for my items that were considered non salvageable? Second question, are receipts required, if so how do I account for paper items destroyed in the fire? Last question, how would I list items that are miscellaneous such as seasonal decorations (valentines, easter, fall/halloween, thanksgiving, etc)? We had random items and like a container full of it. No way to really say what was what as these containers were completely destroyed. As always thanks for any advice/direction! Failed to add, I am in Texas. [link] [comments] |

Progressive charging $600 for “late fees” when I already got coverage elsewhere. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:19 AM PDT I am in the US/New Orleans, LA My policy with progressive was up for renewal on May 8th. I let it cancelled and picked up coverage with Geico. The only correspondence I got from Progressive was that I needed to pay if I wanted to keep my coverage. Today, I got a bill saying it would be cancelled but that I still owe over $600 for June. If I show proof that I was covered elsewhere, can I get out of this? This is exhausting - I let the payment lapse because my 6 month commitment was up. I shouldn't be held to more. Any advice on how best to handle? [link] [comments] |

I accidentally lied on my car insurance UK Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:41 PM PDT I'm just going to tell the whole story. I passed my driving test early March this year and got insured soon after, I was completely truthful on the form apart from that I misunderstood the question 'How many years have you held this licence?' I took this for including the years I've had in my provisional licence which I've had since I was 17... really dumb of me I know. I'm not sure how I haven't been found out yet as I thought the insurance company would of checked with the DVLA within a few days to make sure everything lined up okay, I'm guessing due to COVID all the offices are shut so they never checked possibly. The way I see it I have two choices. 1) Tell the insures the truth about what happened and they will either view it as a simple mistake or try and drain me of as much money as they can and make my insurance void and have loads of points added to my licence. 2) Keep the insurance for a year and hope I don't get found out and change insures at the end of the policy and be 100% accurate next time. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Short Term Disability Weight Loss Surgery Mexico Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:12 PM PDT Company uses MetLife for Short Term Disability claims. Undergoing bariatric surgery and doctor has advised I will need 6 weeks off to fully recover before I can proceed with my normal job functions. Surgery is taking place in Mexico. Will there be any issues with coverage for STD given the surgery is taking place outside of the US? If so, would a note from my doctor in the states make a difference? Does the adjuster make a decision as to what an acceptable amount of time off is? Or is this left to the doctor? [link] [comments] |
Dental Insurance Double Billing Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:09 PM PDT Hey insurance experts...I need help with a dental insurance issue.... I have a dental plan through my employer. I changed plans at the start of the year due to a job change so I didn't know what the negotiated charges were. I get an extra two cleanings a year which I have paid out of pocket the past few years due to my having Invisalign. Earlier this year I had my exam and cleaning and I was scheduled for an exam and cleaning in September after I had my implant installed. So this month I went in solely for a cleaning. My dentist came in to say hello and to explain their COVID processes....and then my awesome hygienist cleaned my teeth. As I pay the non exam cleanings I went and paid. The amount was just a few dollars more than what I had paid under my prior insurance so I didn't think anything if it and paid with my credit card. They said, due to COVID, they'd email my receipt. Of course I never received it! Fast forward a week later and I get notified that my dental claim has been finalized. Ok...I hop online and see that not only did they bill me for my cleaning but also for an office visit. Apparently my current insurance is really really good at negotiating because they both came to what I was charged. Ok...and I assumed that there was a misunderstanding so I called the dentist and was told there was and that they'd refund my overpayment and I should get the check in the ends few days...plus they'd correct with my dental insurance. Fast forward another week to yesterday. I didn't get a check so I called up and asked the dentist what the status was. I was told that the dentist doesn't normally do refunds and that that the dentist said that I did have an exam. I asked what was done since the dentist didn't look in my mouth at all. I was told they weren't sure but they'd ask the doctor. So a few hours later I get a call from the doctor saying that they did an exam but they weren't going to argue with me and wouldn't tell me what was done. I'm like ok, no worries, but could I kindly have a refund of my overpayment. Last time I had an overpayment they threatened to send me to collections...they didn't apply my credit balance when my prior insurance denied the claim! I called and the fixed it...but not without a hassle...which is why i asked for a refund this time...plus I could use the money this month. The doctor said they normally didn't do it but that they would drop a check in the mail that day. I'm like ok thank you. Fast forward to today. I get a call from the dentist that she will not be issuing a check until I sign a release...I'm like ok...I don't get it. She advises that she will also only do a refund if I agree to not be their patient because clearly I don't trust them. I'm confused and stunned because they have been a great doctor. I ask what the problem was since it was just a billing concern and a misunderstanding...apparently they are required to bill all visits under their provider contact. I was told by the doctor that they felt I was personally attacking them about the treatment they provided. I was confused and asked for clarification. I advised that I didn't recall the doctor looking in my mouth for an exam, but since they said they did provide a service no worries just forward me a refund check, a credit to my credit card, or return it to my insurance since I won't be their patient anymore. I reiterated how much I appreciated their office and expressed sadness that a billing issue would destroy our relationship...No worries...they were forwarding said release as soon as I was off the phone. That was 8 hours ago. And the dentist admitted they charged the office visit to cover COVID 19 costs and that if the insurance didn't pay they were going to not charge me. Like, ok, but you did. So I'm thinking I'm out my money and that my dentist wasn't that ethical. Now they took payment from me when they damn well knew they were billing my insurance...add to that they billed for a visit I didn't have. One that I will need at my new dentist. I am thinking that if they are required to bill insurance they shouldn't have taken my Payment and that it would be a violation of their agreement. I just want my credit balance back. I am not that concerned if I have to pay for another visit under a new doctor...as long as my records can make it to the new dentist. It is cheaper than paying for new bite wings.... but I'm not trusting this doctor to refund my overpayment. My banker friends say that because I signed for the charge I should be reporting this to my insurance. But I really don't know what they can do...any ideas on what i can do? Honestly if they take extra money from me and won't refund it I'd like my dental insurance to drop them as a participating provider. If they are willing to rip me off then they likely are committing the same transgressions against my dental plan. US - New York State with a dental PPO [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 09:06 AM PDT Not sure if this is a good place to start so why not. I've worked as a claims specialist (filing auto, home, and life claims) for a high risk insurance company for a year and a half now in NC. With COVID19, the company decided to double up some of the claims reps and I've been stuck in handing policy service calls as well. I would like to leave this company and find new work but I don't know where to start. I do not want to be an adjuster lol just not my cup of tea. Underwriting does interest me and HR does as well. I currently make 15.26$ an hour and I would like to stay at or above that. I have a bachelors in English Lit. Any advice is appreciated! Edit: adding location [link] [comments] |

Varying information following a multi-vehicle hit and run. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:33 PM PDT This is all happening in Texas. I was driving my fathers truck pulling a rented car hauler with another truck on the car hauler and a motorcycle in the bed of the truck that was on the trailer. The truck and bike are owned by my boyfriend, the truck hauling everything is my dads and I rented the car hauler. On the morning of the 13th, I was pulling the trailer with the truck and bike down the interstate when a Cadillac hit us from behind. I'm not sure if he fell asleep or what, but he hit us with enough force to total the trailer, both trucks and cause pretty decent (but repairable) damage to the bike. After getting to the shoulder, my boyfriend went to check on the other driver because the Cadillac had caught fire. The other driver was running up the hill to the service road and pretty much fled the scene on foot. The plates on the car came back as insured. But the driver turned himself in a couple days later and gave a completely different insurance policy. Here's the issue we're having. My insurance company is saying there should be two claims. One for my dads truck and the trailer, one for my boyfriends truck and bike. They're saying since it would be two payouts for two parties, there should be two claims. The insurance the other driver gave to the police was liability and they're saying it needs to all be under one claim. I'm sure you can imagine, they're now saying there are going to be limitation issues. Are they simply trying to pay the least amount? SHOULD there be two claims since there are two "owners" with damaged property? Or since it was one incident, are they right in saying it will be all lumped into one claim? If there should be two claims, how should we handle them telling us otherwise? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Is cash value insurance worth it?? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:17 PM PDT Can someone please help me understand if cash value insurance is worth it? Details: - 25 yo - salary precludes me from Roth IRA option - max out 401k - 2500/ mo into brokerage account - rainy day fund with 4 months expenses - 800/mo in insurance (a little bit is disability but most goes towards cash value) I like to think that I'm pretty financially savvy but I just cannot understand if cash value is worth it. Pros: - not tied directly to market - tax advantaged (if you extract cash value through a loan) Cons: - high expenses - complex structure - majority of value comes from death benefit My questions: - how are you supposed to analyze this savings vehicle and compare it to others (e.g., 401k or traditional brokerage account)? - is it worth having this? - what questions should I ask my financial advisor (Northwestern Miriam) to figure out if this is worth it? Thanks for the insights! [link] [comments] |
Cheapest health insurance for my unemployed dad? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:47 PM PDT My dad (divorced) has been unemployed and has been without health insurance. His only source of income right now is from his real estate. He lives in Colorado. I think he receives about $2,200 in rent money monthly, but half of that goes to my mom for alimony, I believe. It seems Medicaid told him that he doesn't qualify for medicaid, but apparently my little sister (his dependent) does. So my sister currently has Medicaid, but he doesn't. I don't believe Medicaid counts assets when determining eligibility. If they did, then I don't believe he can qualify for Medicaid because his house is worth over $500k. I actually don't know why he doesn't qualify for Medicaid -- his income monthly is technically only $1,100/month. He was also told that he doesn't qualify for Obama Care either, but there is some plan for $160/month that he qualifies for. He's considering that, but I wanted to see if others have suggestions on other cheap/better insurance plans that he might qualify for? [link] [comments] |
Advice for obtaining additional insurance for an older salvaged vehicle Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:26 PM PDT Earlier this year, my husband and I purchased a used 2005 Volvo V70R station wagon. It's a passion purchase, as we were very excited to have this particular car model. We bought from the original owner but the car had a salvage title because it had been keyed across most panels. It has approximately 105k miles on it currently and we hope to run it into the ground. However, the insurance company has informed us that they will only cover the car for approximately $5000 if it ends up in an accident. On top of the paint, there are some additional repairs that the car needs in the next year and they aren't cheap. As to the real world value of the car, we have seen the same model in good condition listed at $20k online in other parts of the country. We would like to have the car insured for closer to that amount as it would better represent what we are putting into the car for repairs, and we would happily pay a larger monthly value to have the car insured for closer to $20k. I began looking into "classic" car insurance but so far it seems like there are two obstacles to us getting it: (1) The car is intended to be a daily driver for me. I drive in the city and average ~5 miles per day. Classic car insurance doesn't cover daily drivers. (2) We live in an apartment with a carport, but it does not fully cover the entire car. It seems that most classic car insurance requires the car to be properly garaged. Any suggestions for how we might convince an insurance company to provide more coverage for our unique vehicle?
