Trump administration projects about 3,000 coronavirus deaths per day by June, New York Times says

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:57 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/04/coronavirus-trump-administration-projects-3000-deaths-per-day-by-june.html

"The interagency report from the Departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services also reportedly forecasts that the U.S. will see about 200,000 new Covid-19 cases each day by the end of this month. "

This would be highly relevant to investing decisions, in my opinion, thus I felt this should be posted up here. We generally are at about 30k cases a day right now. We have not had a single day get close to 3,000 deaths a day. These projections made me double take.

    Companies with shareholder benefits

    Posted: 04 May 2020 05:00 AM PDT

For example Carnival Cruise lines (CCL) will give shareholders, with a minimum of 100 shares, credit for onboard spending. What are some other companies with share holder benefits like this?

How often do you check your stocks?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:10 AM PDT

How often do you check your stocks?

I ask because for someone like me who has ALL my money in the market and doesn't do heavy research on the stocks I buy because my ADHD makes it hard for me to learn new things. So I check every 5 mins in the morning and every 5 mins before close. So how often do you check and why?

Clothing apparel company J. Crew filed for bankruptcy Monday, marking the first major retail bankruptcy of the coronavirus pandemic.

No doubt the shut down will accelerate some bankruptcies, the question will be how many.

ELI5... why should I not purchase airline stocks while they're low?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:18 AM PDT

Serious question. Just getting into casual stock trading and am trying to get a better understanding of things. I've always been told "buy low, sell high". Airline stocks seem very low though yet I'm being told not to purchase them. Wouldn't these stocks regain value in the future as the airline industry starts to come back to life?

Again, obviously a very dumbed down question so a dumbed down response would be appreciated. :)

Is QE (Quantitative Easing) still possible? The end of an economic era?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:55 AM PDT

Quantitative easing or QE, is the new tool for central banks since 2008 crisis to regulate the market.

[For those who needs a heads up on QE: it is the principal mechanism of creating currency to keep the boat afloat. The fed, (or the domestic central bank) will buy assets on the market with fresh created money to investments funds to relieve them from it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitative_easing .]

Intro part : QE is the way things worked for the past decade. It helped banks keeping healthy assets after subprime crisis, it drove the stock market up for 12 years. At the cost of a slight and good inflation. It has been used massively lately to prevent occidental economic collapse (up to $6,13 trillion created by the fed for the USA). I know that a lot of you talked about « the coronavirus Dip » and did not understand why the stock market did not dive, this is why.

    Question part :

Now let us imagine that the current coronavirus situation will create an inflation. Central banks will not be allowed to use QE if the inflation is too high. IMO above 4% (annual month to month growth rate) is smelling bad. The minute the fed, or EU CBE, will announce they cannot use QE because of inflation, this is where panic will strike. In an attempt to anticipate, could we discuss the possibility of this and the sustainability of the QE mechanism paradigm?

    Thx guys, Best regards.

    Pulling the trigger on LUV

    Posted: 04 May 2020 08:29 AM PDT

Well... good enough for me. I was waiting for a sizable dip to get into the airline space. The fact that the dip this time was caused by emotions based on buffets words means its time to get in. Southwest is starting to ramp up flights again and I'm ready. I can't feel bad about getting in at 26.91. What a discount!

    Who else has jumped in?

List of news sites to block & NEVER trust (Contributions Welcome)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 12:25 PM PDT

    - Forbes. Reason: 75% of their articles are from "contributors", which basically means that anyone can publish their own article to forbes, and there is no standard of quality. Fake news occasionally pops up, and news from their paid editors isn't even that good anyways.

    - Motley Fool: Reason: They operate purely on clickbait. They don't give a fuck about your money, they just want to see who can get the most clicks from generating the most outrageous headline. If you want to see for yourself, they will say one thing and then say the EXACT OPPOSITE the next day.

RTX - relatively safe long term hold?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 01:09 PM PDT

With RTX trading between high $57-low$59 today, this week seems like a good entry point for someone looking to hold long term. I've started my own DD into RTX. They recently merged with United Technologies, and hold Pratt and Whitney among other valuable defense manufacturing positions. I've heard anecdotally that P and W engines have been the best as far as engines go for airframers.

Can anyone share their RTX analysis long-term-hold-wise? Anyone buying more this week, or next? Not sure what to do wrt their 1st earings report come 5/7. Dividend coming soon too.

Would someone please explain why (some) higher priced dividend stocks are more popular than cheaper options, even though the cheap yields are comparable, if not better?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:00 AM PDT

I'm relatively new to dividend stocks, so it's quite possible that I'm missing something.

    Here's my example:

Dividend Stock 1 - VYM (approx. share value as of posting - $75.35)

    • Average dividend yield over last 10 payments= .67c/quarterly

Dividend Stock 2 - NYMT (approx. share value as of posting - $2.03)

    • Average dividend yield over last 10 payments = .20c/quarterly

    $6000 to invest

    $6K @ 75.35 = 79 shares VYM ($52.93 dividend payment/quarterly)

    $6K @ $2.03 = 2955 shares NYMT ($591 dividend payment/quarterly)

    Am I missing something?

    College Student looking to invest

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:50 AM PDT

Gonna get right to the point with everyone here. I have extra money after all my bills are paid and want to invest.

Current Money in my Roth IRA = $288 in S&P 500

I have around 500-1000 ready to put into the market but I am such a beginner in this realm. As we are in a low point with Corona going on I figured this is the best time to invest.

What are some stocks I should throw money into?

Should I just buff up the S&P 500?

Is my Roth IRA the only thing I should invest in?

Thank you for all your help! Everything helps and will benefit my future!

Anyone else picking up Airline stocks at this point?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:51 AM PDT

Been trading for a few years. Stopped playing options because the market is way too erratic. Instead I've been buying into BA, Delta & AT&T shares lately. Also looking to get into Wynn and CCL. Buffet making things so cheap now it's crazy. He sold because his cost basis was probably thru the roof and he has investors watching over his shoulder at every step of the way ofc he sold l doesn't mean there no opportunity here.

My logic is the world will never stop flying. Ever. Without flight our world wouldn't be where it is today. It's only a matter of time, might be a year or two, that these companies rebound and everyone forgets what the corona virus ever was. I'll easily triple my money. Not to mention the dividends I'll be collecting along the way.

Anyone else also see the huge opportunity here?

new to TD ameritrade- question about selling a stock and reusing the cash

    Posted: 04 May 2020 01:21 PM PDT

It seems If you sell a stock within 3 days of buying it, you cant reuse the cash, they hold it. Is there another way/option, possibly another app altogether, that will allow me to reuse the cash and buy another stock?

    thanks

Stock Watch List May 4, 2020

    Posted: 04 May 2020 05:44 AM PDT

Good morning, here's my watch list

Gap ups: APDN, CGC, CODX, TDOC, TVIX

Gap Downs: BA, LUV, PLAY, RCL, TSN, UAL, UBER

SPY gapping down slightly after pulling back for a couple days with the 20 and 50 day moving averages underneath which should act as some support. Many stocks are gapping down as well into short term moving averages and likely to catch a bounce. If the market shows strength many of the gap downs could reverse. Airlines and cruise ships and casinos primarily gaping down pre market. I will be waiting for market to find some sort of direction before making any trades due to last week being choppy. If the market decides to decline further, I will look at TVIX for a quick trade. Be patient, there will be plenty of opportunities to trade, just focus on the best setups. Good Luck

I am not holding any positions in any of the stocks listed in this post. these are to watch for opportunities to make trades during todays session
