    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:47 AM PDT

What's up, Sales Savages? Corporate Bro here, self-proclaimed Master of the Persuasive Arts and Purveyor of the mantra S.A.D.N.E.S.S., which stands for Sales Are Dope Never Ever Stop Selling.

To those of you who have no idea who I am, I make satirical sales comedy. Every week for the last 6 years, my team and I have produced a piece of sketch comedy about life in tech sales. It's been a labor of love since day 1. There are 4 of us, and we all have real jobs, 3 of 4 of which are in sales, so we write at night and film on weekends.

In recent years, as the account has grown, I've been asked to speak at Sales Kickoffs (SKOs) and President's club events around the country. Most recently, my team and I shot a TV pilot for a SitCom (spec pilot) of Corporate Bro that we're now trying to get picked up. Finally selling my own product, whaddya know?

My entire professional career has been in tech sales. I've sold SMB, Mid-Market, and Enterprise. I started as an SDR at Oracle back in 2013 and sold for four different tech companies up until about 3 months ago when I left a company I helped start so that I could finish my MBA degree at Stanford University.

I am here to answer your questions on SALES, CONTENT, COMEDY, BUSINESS SCHOOL or anything else you would like to ask.

You can find our content here: Youtube

Feel free to drop a questions on THIS THREAD. I'll be live answering for 24 hours starting Thursday @10am PT. Lets get weird.

Would you pursue a position that was short-term but paid 3X higher than your current role or continue working what's steady?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:42 AM PDT

So due to covid-19 the company in question laid off most of it's sales team. The sales team composed of roughly 30 members and that's been reduced to less than 5. That means the well qualified leads are being divided out by 5 instead of 30 and my friend who works for this company is literally making his month quota in 3 days. To my understanding, leadership will still be slow to hire for at least another 6 months to a year.

Truth be told I'm hurting for money but I don't want to fall into a bad position when a year from now I'll make less.

Compensation for Company A would likely 60k-70k between now and December(6 months) and following that 50k for 12 months when they're back to normal.

Currently, my coworker is earning 40K a day with a 5%-8% commission on gross. The normal is roughly 10K a day. So he's averaging around 2K a day. He'll make way more than 60K in 6 months but I want to be conservative.

Based on that information, what would you choose?

May is going to be brutal

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:50 AM PDT

I'm grateful to have a job as an account manager. I work for a fortune 500 selling industrial equipment and I feel like May is going to be brutal. No talk of layoffs yet, but I wonder how long they will keep us on payroll.

Friday was the worst day of my career. My monthly quota is 250K and I sold $200. The rest of the team is not doing much better. My boss is putting pressure on us but what the fuck can we do? My clients are not sending quotes requests. A lot of the projects are on hold.

    This virus shit BLOWS

    How's your May so far?

Is it time for me to leave sales?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:57 AM PDT

Alright - here's my situation. I've been in sales 4 years and I'm pretty good at it. I have never made less than six figures except year 1 (85k). I've consistently been an overachiever. I've worked my up to enterprise AE. Before the pandemic, I had deals with billion dollar companies. I say this to illustrate that I've had success, especially as a 27 year old. I also want to add that I'm a positive person and really happy in my life.

But I can't get past the fact that I just don't want to do it. I don't enjoy the process. I don't enjoy being on the phone that much. I don't enjoy the monotony. Even closing deals doesn't get me juiced anymore.

I daydream about leaving for another line of work. I've thought maybe revenue operations or something in finance, knowing it would require some extra coursework.

Thoughts? I know I'll likely take a pay cut. But I don't want to squander my sales talent for a lesser career only to be unhappy there. I also don't want to slog away at a career I hate.

Has anyone got any ideas for Sales Experiments? (e.g white theme vs black theme?)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 01:18 AM PDT

I work in SaaS we currently run sales experiments. This is a way to A/B test and get useful data to increase conversions

As an example - we ran 100 demo's (light vs dark) and light won by around 20% with regards to conversions after 2 months

Has anyone ever ran anything like this? Does anybody have any great experiment ideas?

EDIT: Thanks for the replies - whilst there are debates about data sample sizes, this also is an exercise so the sales team can share and bond over new ideas.

Cold emails - include a personal note preamble or not?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 07:11 PM PDT

Our marketing department has created a new email template as part of a marketing campaign for a particular product. Whether it's due to GDPR or what I'm not sure, but they're asking us sales guys to send out emails from our individual company email accounts.

Would you include a quick note at the top before sending the email? Like, ' "Hi Brian,

I work at blahcorp and saw your company was also involved in the blah industry, please see the below info? "

Or would you just send it straight off? The email is very well formed, looks great etc. I'm just in two minds about adding my own stuff to it as it's coming from my individual email.

    Posted: 04 May 2020 08:25 AM PDT

    Sales internship vs SDR

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:20 AM PDT

So It's technically my second year in college but I'm going to be graduating next summer around July. I have a sales enablement internship at a tech company right now.

My question is, should I look for full time SDR jobs for after I graduate from college or should I look for an internship first and then move directly from intern to full time?

What dialers/CRM tools are good for enterprise sales reps + marketing teams?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:47 AM PDT

I'm looking into a new dialer/CRM for reps to use for sales outreach into enterprise accounts.

We previously used Outreach.io but we're not satisfied with their support. Our specific needs are:

-dialing through the app or being able to easily log calls

-streamlined process of adding new leads, dialing them, and segmenting them

-ability to create sequences or plays that can be executed by reps

It would also be nice to integrate our email marketing through MailChimp, but that's not totally necessary.

Does anyone have suggestions or feedback on what has worked for you?

Is there a "FAANG" or "Big Four" equivalent for working in software sales?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:26 AM PDT

FAANG is the standard for software engineers, Big Four is the standard for accounting.

I rarely hear about which sales companies are the most prestigious are highest paying to work for. Is this a thing?

Does a sales job exist that allows you to have a sole focus?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:06 AM PDT

Sup everyone! Ltl,ftp. On mobile so excuse bad formatting and lazy language.

I've been in sales for about 10 years now. Inside/Inbound for 4 years in b2c/b2g/b2b automotive aftermarket, inside management about 3 years in the same industry and now outside b2b sales about 3 years. Some college but no degree and now with a kid and house, going back will be quite challenging.

With each of these positions, as I advance, they become more and more complex and stretch outside the bounds of "sales".

Currently I work for as an AE for a small office supply dealer ( about 20mil yearly revenue) and am responsible for over 1mil in revenue and my OTE is about 75k. There is maybe one qualified lead a month but no marketing or sales staff to generate more for the sales team. These are all the things I'm responsible for managing:

Prospect (cold call in person and phone)

    Set meetings

    Create proposals/quotes

    Present

    Close

Manage accounts ( I'm at about 300) across a territory of my local metro (about 900 square miles)

    Analyze usage for margin analysis

Analyze usage for cost saving substitutes for end user

Analyze all accounts for variance and leakage.

Analyze usage for cross selling opportunities.

Design and send out quarterly newsletters

Network for referrals (in person and digitally)

Write my own copy/create my own presentations

Generate my own sales tools and marketing flyers

    Cross sell 10 different categories

    Project manage furniture install projects

Give feedback to upper mgmt for website/marketing (mostly correcting their bad grammar and poor UX and trying to advise on proper brand voice and on-brand design).

Is this a normal outside sales job for 75k a year? I feel like this was a step forward in pay but a step back from managing an inside team of 8x people as a sales manager at my last company. I'm constantly in a mode of "I'm never going to catch up on all the backend work." Even now my admin load is huge to identify the state of every client each week to project when "business as usual" will return. It just feels like I'm playing catch up constantly.

On top of all this, if it wasn't for our PPP loan, we likely would have been out of business in the mext month or 2. What should I look for in a new position? I like the stability and flexibility of my current position, but I feel like the only way to grow my pay is to grow my stress of managing so many accounts from top to bottom, front to back.

edit fixed some errors and clarified some things.

    Sales pros without degrees...

    Posted: 03 May 2020 08:55 PM PDT

Do you even apply for jobs that say degree required? If you do, how do you spin it? I have 18 years experience in my sector and would run circles around any applicant possessing the "Min. Qualifications"

Also, any resume tips for getting past the autobots without a degree? I do have a lot of college credits, just bailed late junior year. My resume says " University, location" but no indication of Bachelors degree.

Best lead generation tool for Contacts-based outreach?

Was working with ZoomInfo in my previous company, but is too expensive for an early-stage startup that we are.

Currently trying Seamless ai and even though their Company-based search function is really dynamic, their Contacts-based one seems limited (no ability to filter contacts by Geo and Industry.

How does your company’s lead ownership work?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 08:48 PM PDT

My company's current sale ownership rules do not drive the team. Here's what they are: We get assigned leads round robin, the leads are for registrations to our software and have a 50% chance of registering by themselves without us doing a thing, this is taken into account in our commissions and it's pretty consistent. To get credit for the sales you just have to do 2 things: Change the lead to your name/ownership, and log a call once a week. Currently the game is get as many leads in your name as possible. It's driving numbers but not conversion. All we care about is quantity. 50% chance to convert by doing nothing just means you wanna try and get 500 leads in your name compared to the guy trying to actually sell who gets 100 leads. That's mine and I think it's dumb.

What are your company's lead ownership rules? Once a lead is in your name is yours forever? Does it ever get recycled around? Can they be stolen by another sales rep? I'm interested in how your company works.

Advice Needed: How To Sell / Market A Physical Enterprise Product?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 05:58 PM PDT

Hi, hope everyone's staying safe. For those of you that have done enterprise sales, how would you go about advertising / marketing a physical product applicable to mostly all workplaces? Say you wanted to sell a new printer / office headset / stapler / you get the idea to offices across the country. I'm pretty familiar with selling/marketing consumer products: there's fb ads, instagram, and targeted magazine ads for all kinds of consumer products, but I'm at a loss for how I'd approach the office supplies market I referred to earlier. Also, would the best bet to try to wholesale to staples / officemax instead of trying to sell directly to offices? Curious how some of the more seasoned folks here would think about this. Thanks in advance!

Selling recruitment software to small-medium businesses and I'm at a complete loss as to what I should do

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:11 PM PDT

I've been prospecting continuously throughout the Covid ordeal but I am having close to no luck. I am not able to book any meetings/demos and all the opps I had that I thought were going to come through pre-Covid have gone cold on me. I started the job just a few weeks before the situation with Covid escalated so I had no opportunity to build my pipeline and I am unsure of what to do. My country has some of the strictest lock down measures in the world so that certainly doesn't help and neither does the fact that I have been at the company for a few months now and haven't been able to make any sales.

Does anyone have any advice? Really concerned for my career at the moment since this is my first SaaS account exec role and my only previous experience is a couple of years in pharma so it's going to be hard for me to get a similar job if worst comes to worst and I get made redundant soon.

I need a new perspective on dealing with frustrated customers.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 03:20 PM PDT

We all know the golden rules for this when an account is on the phone, flipping out on you about a problem that your warehouse or customer service team has caused that has nothing to do with you: remove emotion, let them calm down, let them speak. But what are your tips? How do you handle calls with frustrated or downright angry and rude accounts? I do a decent job, but there are some who I have to cut off or they will rant for half an hour.

    Any insight? What's your process?
