Sales numbers super low due to Covid, need advice!! Sales and Selling

Sales numbers super low due to Covid, need advice!!

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:36 AM PDT

Hey guys and gals, first of all I want to say that I am in sales because of this sub, so thank you to everyone who contributes. I love everything about sales except trying to force a sale during a global pandemic!

Looking for some tough love in my current situation.

So here's the deal I joined my organization in July 2019 as an outside sales rep for a logistic consulting company and in 2019 I closed $110,000 vs a $60,000 quota since it was prorated. This year they gave all new sales reps a quota of $248k and I've only closed $17,000 and its May! Granted I do live in NJ which happens to be the epicenter of this pandemic but my pipeline is $1.5 million and exploding. The 6 promising deals I have pending are all on hold (total $260k) I am in the process of closing $86k deal just have not received the paperwork yet but lets just count this as a close for arguments sake.

I am Looking for advice as I cant seem to do anything to change the situation we are all in. I am scared, anxious, and these feelings get worse every day I dont make a sale.

Dialing 20-35 people a day and getting very little interest.

Sending emails 100-300 a week sharing news, offering services and touching base with prospects but less than 1% of people respond.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can give me some advice!

Upcoming Interview for inside sales manager - advice?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:29 PM PDT

It's for a prominent tech company in the marketing sector and it'll be the first management position I've interviewed for, after being promoted in my last position to a management role.

Given the....uncertain conditions at the moment, I want to make sure I crush this. Anyone that has experience interviewing or being interviewed for sales management positions, I would appreciate your advice VERY much.

Some general thoughts / questions below

    1. What can I do to prepare for the interview that would be different from a regular sales gig?
    2. What sorts of questions might they ask?
    3. What qualities should I demonstrate? Obviously confidence, sales acumen, etc. But any advice here would be great.
    4. Is there anything else I should keep in mind?
    5. Are there any hard no-nos that would be different from a regular sales interview?

I'd there's anything else I should be thinking about then again: I'll appreciate advice. I don't know what I don't know so.

    Thanks!

Salary Question: Do most Business Development Reps make commission?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:19 AM PDT

I've been a BDR rep at an outsourced marketing company for almost 4 years now and made 26k last yr. When I look up state and national salary averages for BDRs, usually I see base wages of ~34k, which when combined with commission and bonuses amounts to 50k / yr

Should i take these salary averages with a grain of salt, or realize that I'm getting the shift in terms of salary?

How do I go about asking for a raise while technically getting a promotion?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:39 PM PDT

long story short, I am in inside sales and I will be transitioning to more of an outside sales role. I left for 2019 for another sales job, and came back in november on good terms. I have been killing it. I have been with the company for 1.5 years total and i am in the lower 10th percentile for wage. we are a smaller company and I will basically be training myself outside sales.

With that being said, I make $18/hr. I want to eventually have a $23-$25 base salary, plus whatever commission structure the owner has in-mind. I am hoping to have some sort of raise starting immediately, and transition into a better salary once I prove my worth. I would prefer $22 , and I won't settle for anything under $20.50

I will be speaking with the owner tomorrow. How can I hit the $22/HR to start?

    Adapting tonality to customer persona

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:27 PM PDT

Hi guys - quick background for 10 yrs I was in an industry catering to midlevel and senior IT mgmt. So my communication style is a bit direct (which is my natural personality too, less fluff and customers appreciated it). Now I am in a martech software sales role, the average customer is a marketer female under 30. I have feedback I need to soften my tone and communication style - does anyone have suggestions on how to adapt/shift tonality to customer persona?

    Non-Scammy Part-Time Sales Gigs?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I worked full time in the sales game since high school graduation essentially. My last job was a base + commission model. The last job completely turned me off from sales because of the extremely toxic atmosphere and it was very hard to earn commission with the razor-thin margins and shitty structure.

Now I work full time in IT, but I crave the feeling of working in sales. I really miss the sales lifestyle. I love my current job and have a great path forward to earn a healthy income. I just want to get back into sales in some way without leaving my current job.

So, I am wondering if part-time sales jobs are really a thing. Even full commission-based sales would be completely fine as long as I can work when I am available. Are there industries that specialize in that kind of sales atmosphere? I don't want to fall into a scam or do unethical shit, but I really just want some way to get back into the game.

    Headsets for sales

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:08 AM PDT

Hello, looking for some advice on a headset for daily use. I make calls for about 6 hours a day and am looking for a good headset to pair with my MacBook (2012) to make those calls. Primary function would be for calling so I would need one that would be able to cancel out as much noise on the microphone. Music is not really a priority for it. Bluetooth is preferred but one with a wire plug in is not out of the question. I currently have a Jabra Evolve 65, which uses a usb dongle and connects great, but the microphone allows all the background noise to come through the call so person on the other end can hear everything. Any advice, or feedback on specific headsets would be appreciated!

    Going around the mktg agency?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 06:18 AM PDT

I sell advertising, and there's so many shady and awful agencies that we're forced to work with. The client trusts them to make decisions on what the media plan should be, and these big companies have money to throw out and not really care.

Sometimes what they pick, ends up being really ineffective no matter how hard I try to change it, and if we go around the agency, it will look really bad. Will definitely tarnish the account.

Additionally we sell some really special webinar formats that are underpriced, and always overperform... but since agencies get paid on the 1960's model (add 15% to the gross cost for "creative + placement services"), they don't want to do webinars. They won't get paid because there's no advertisements being created, so they just brush it off.

I'm not sure how to go about this, should I just reach out to the marketing contact on Linkedin and say "Hey, <Xyz agency> said you aren't interested in this, but just in case I wanted to send you more information. You should at least consider attending as it's free, and your competitors will be presenting". And leave it at that? Think it's too shoddy?

How do you deal with insane quotas?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:04 PM PDT

I've been with my current employer several months. When I was interviewed I was told that they want slow, consistent growth.

After several weeks I get my list of accounts and their quotas. I look at the quotas compared to 2019 and there isn't account that doesn't have at least a 300% increase expectation attached to it. Some have 1000% increase. I expressed my concerns about this to management but they seemed to not think it's a big deal. Even though I have done over 100% growth (which is something any employer should be happy about), I'm continuously admonished for not hitting quota. My accounts literally laughed at me when I told them what their quota is. I've never had that happen before.

I mentioned how unrealistic these numbers are again earlier this week and was yelled at again for bringing it up. I should also mention that nobody else has as big of a quota increase. It's like they decided to dump the crappy accounts on the new guy and expect him to do the impossible. I've never been so stressed and discouraged in my life.

How would you deal with this?

Do I legally have to provide an option to opt out when using Ringless Voicemail Messages?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 10:58 PM PDT

I intend to use Ringless Voicemails Messages as an outreach strategy in order to see if any real estate agents are willing to sell me off market properties (before they hit the MLS). Unfortunately, some of the information regarding RVM's and their legality is not clear.

For those who have had experience with RVM, do I legally have to say "if you would like to opt out then do this..." at the end the pre-recorded message? I don't even have a methodology of how they would opt out. Would they call a number? Would they press a button? I don't intend to call anyone more than once.

Is going back to university for an IT/compsci degree worth it?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 03:47 PM PDT

I completed a business degree and have been in sales ever since (been in SaaS for a few months and I love it). Now that Covid happened it made me realize how volatile a sales career can really be and I am considering going back to study so I can have something to fall back on long term + something to leverage if I do stay in tech sales (which I plan to). I have an interest in programming and IT in general and have been learning web dev for a while. I am 24 years old and still live at home so expenses aren't a problem. The degree would take 2.5 years to complete and I would probably try start a web dev business on the side to keep some money coming in. I feel like if there's a time to go back to uni it would be now.

    What do you guys think?

Business development advice in the US - how to pitch CEO's of $200m - $10bn firms.

    Posted: 06 May 2020 09:24 PM PDT

    Hi All,

We're a UK based recruitment firm who focus on search/ senior appointments in the construction sector. We work in the UK, Ireland & US - but the US is the key growth hub for us - we are working in the civil space already.

I am leading our expansion into the general building contractor sector and have compiled a list of 400 CEO's of the US's biggest building businesses, based from California to New York. Since starting, i've got through to about 20, surprisingly, i've had less time than I would from UK CEOs, but now is a very difficult time to be calling of course given the current climate.

Has any one got any advice/ some tips of pitching guys at this level in the US? IS their any specific courtesies expected in the US, and cultural generalizations worth considering based on location etc..

Any advice would be great :). Thanks in advance.

Certifications/trainings for BDR or SDR role ?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 01:47 PM PDT

What online certifications would you secure or what online trainings would you complete to move from high end retail sales ($40 million in sales in ten years) to an SDR/BDR role at a software company? Goal is to work my way up into sales from the BDR/SDR role at the new company.

Last week, I began dabbling in coding at Grasshopper ( https://grasshopper.app/ ) and Odin ( https://www.theodinproject.com/courses/web-development-101 ) and others. However, they seem more in depth than my purposes require.

Thanks in advance for those who take the time to share. Stay safe.
