    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - May 07, 2020

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

For the bears expecting a big downturn, what will be the catalyst event sending markets to new lows?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:35 PM PDT

I'm trying to make sense of the markets which is definitely a futile endeavor, they seem to defy logic recently. But for those who are expecting a big downturn, what signals should we be watching for? If the market is just a big house of cards right now, what event or events might trigger the collapse?

Buffett: 'I would disagree quite violently' with notion that passive investing is dead

    Posted: 06 May 2020 08:49 PM PDT

    https://money.yahoo.com/buffett-i-would-disagree-quite-violently-with-notion-that-passive-investing-is-dead-202620430.html

Despite the stock market volatility in recent months set off by the coronavirus pandemic, the Oracle of Omaha declared passive investing isn't dead.

Warren Buffett stood by his defense of index funds, which are mutual funds that track market indices, such as the Standard & Poor's 500 index. These investments aren't actively traded by a wealth manager.

PENN launching mobile casino with Barstool

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:16 AM PDT

PENN recently announced launching a mobile sports book app with Barstool coming in Q3. If this app is solid it has a lot of potential to take off with the backing of Barstool and Dave. Will definitely be shaky in the short term until casinos open up but if PENN can survive this downturn the future looks bright. I'm personally long on PENN and got in low around $10. Anyone have thoughts on this?

    Sports Gambling Companies

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:29 AM PDT

Can someone explain the nuances between FanDuels, DraftKings, and PENN?

Do all 3 offer sports betting and fantasy sports betting? Is one company more focused on one aspect of sports gambling than the others? Are these companies capable of operating outside of the US such as Canada or South America?

Basically what are the differences between the 3?

For my fellow Oil Tanker bagholders, are there any positive catalysts left?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:09 AM PDT

good earnings call from DHT and EURN yet seems like we will finish in the negative today for both

if the prices hold stable, I'm holding on for dividends, but it seems capital losses may widen cause the stock price is dropping even when theres good news?!

are there any further catalysts on the horizon

    Looking for beta testers

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:38 AM PDT

I'm a product designer working on a new product for traders to track their performance and analyze their trades. If anyone has a couple minutes to answer a few questions about how they track their trades and what they wish would be better you'd be helping create a new tool for traders to make better trading decisions.

We're also looking for testers to try prototypes and eventually get early beta access as the app is being developed.

Here's the link to the survey: https://michaelclifford1.typeform.com/to/Ub00yT

    Time To Buy Lockheed Martin(LMT)?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:53 PM PDT

Obviously Boeing has enough problems in the commercial airline sector to deal with. Airbus stock has also been hit pretty hard as well. I was looking at Lockheed Martin who specializes more in the defense industry. They seem to be doing ok. Is this their chance to finally pull away from Boeing and get ahead of them in defense contracts? It seems to me that this might be a good opportunity to invest in Lockheed but I would like to here input from others.

    tsla stock

elon is going on the joe rogan podcast tmr and im really considering shorting tesla stock again. i feel like he's gonna say something silly and get the stock to tank for a bit so I plan on just using lev x5 and take small profits. the only reason why I'm hesitating is that I've heard people say to never bet against TSLA. so, what do you guys think?

How often do you actually exercise a long term option?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:44 AM PDT

I know most people sell contracts or let it expire.

    However,

Let's say I wanted to exercise a contract for 100 shares of MSFT or RTX.

and prices are good right now.

Ok, I want to purchase 100 shares of MSFT at their current price (around 180) a year from now, whatever price that would be.

Sounds like a good deal to me? Unless the premium is just ridiculously high.

What am I missing here? I am a novice.

    I will Bag hold MVIS

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:44 AM PDT

From what I hear even if MVIS isn't acquired by Microsoft aren't they a good company anyway for someone looking for high risk high return stocks? Isn't this company creating technology that has a good chance of revolutionizing some aspect of the future? Isn't there value in that itself, not just this hype about Microsoft acquiring it?

$SAVE Spirit Airlines Thoughts on Staying Afloat

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:38 PM PDT

Oh no... not another airline post...

I know I know. I'm sick of them too. Hear me out. This isn't a "should I buy" question as I already hold DAL, and JETS, (no LUV but thats just my personal preference based on my own DD).

$SAVE took a huge hit this morning after Q1 earnings. This was obviously expected and foreseen. Just did a quick FA and they look to be solid enough to stay afloat for this thing. Trading at ~$10 currently and have been steady at ~$40 for the past years.

I'd be confident about them staying above water until the end of the calendar year, and I also feel confident that the Orange will not let airlines go bankrupt, but if this uncertainty lasts much into 2021 I might get a little concerned, but if we really get to that point, stocks are probably pretty low on my list of concerns.

Has anyone looked into $SAVE? They're a solid discount airline company with good fundamentals for the future, with a pretty loyal clientele looking for cheap and often getaway flights.

Again, sorry for another airline post, just bouncing my ideas off y'all! Thanks.

    Just dumped SQ

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:26 AM PDT

Just dumped my 13 shares of SQ for 148.00 profit. Feels good, but also a little antsy.

Only sold because I anticipate it going down on the Q2 results. Will buy back in then.

Want to be long on this company at a better price point. I think Cashapp is good and longterm they could possibly get bought by someone.

    Thoughts?

ViacomCBS ($VIAC) up almost 20% premarket after expanded distribution deal with Google and positive Q1 earnings. Thoughts on long-term with $VIAC?

    Here is the announcement: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/viacomcbs-google-announce-expanded-distribution-111500844.html

My thinking was $VIAC would be acquired by Apple, Amazon, or Netflix in the next year or two but i wasn't thinking about Google's YouTube TV.

    NAT Holders

    Posted: 06 May 2020 05:11 PM PDT

Attention $NAT holders. Please note I don't have a position in this stock. I just wanted to share a quote from a podcast I was watching on a couple weeks ago by former Goldman Sachs trader Jihan Bowes-Little.

He said "when everyone is thinking the same thing as you, it limits the opportunity for upside because there is no element of surprise".

Remember any information available to you is available to everyone else and is actively being priced into the market. Not advice to buy or sell but understand what you own.
