Posted: 10 May 2020 12:56 PM PDT Hi all, I'm wondering what well-paying career I can get into by spending $1500 or less. I know of real estate license and mortgage loan originators license which both cost around $1000. Both of which were appealing to me before this whole crisis. I'd still like to acquire a mortgage originator license once the whole world levels out a bit but I'd like to keep my options open. Does anybody know of any others? Perhaps some trades? Thanks for any input! [link] [comments]
Got screwed by an online university into a lifetime of debt and need help finding a way out Posted: 09 May 2020 11:36 PM PDT I got manipulated into attending the University of Phoenix when I first moved to the U.S and didn't know much about colleges here, and they said they would accredit the undergrad degree I already had from my country, so I took the opportunity to pursue two masters with them. Little did I know this university was not credible and I've been trying to pay 100k in student loans for the past 8 years. I can't land jobs that require degrees even with my masters that were supposed to be promising (MBA and MAED) since most people know the truth behind these for-profit schools and do not take them seriously. I am losing 10% of monthly income to loans, and my salary is already low. I recently heard about how UoP was sued for using misleading information to lure people into their school who don't know better. These loans ruined my credit and my life has been hell trying to pay them off since moving to the U.S. I wanted to know if anyone could offer me any advice on paying this off since I heard they were forgiving people who attended, but I am not exactly sure what to do or how the forgiveness works. I also wanted to know if I could get refunded for the tuition I already paid that was deducted from my tax returns and my monthly income that is being stolen from me. This school targets minorities and people who do not know better, and I fell victim to this trap. I would appreciate any kind of advice (: [link] [comments]

$40,000 cost breakdown for 10 years old Dachshund Posted: 10 May 2020 07:41 AM PDT In line with the posts before, I present to you my to-the-cent tracking of 10 years' worth of costs for a miniature Dachshund!
She has had some incidents and also developed back issues... with that the higher vet costs. We always buy the highest quality food, supplements, and everything related. No expenses were spared on tests or procedures. The insurance reimburses 90% of everything (this is not a plan available anymore, she is grandfathered in).
Would I do it again if I had known the cost ahead of time? Absolutely! One thing I recommend to everyone: get insurance. It may not pay off (so far it did for us) but you never, ever want to be in a situation where you have to decide whether you can afford the procedure or if you should put your friend down.
So here it is, totals for 10 years:
EDIT: This thread developed in a really warped way which I find rather odd. Where do you get the idea that I am talking about "averages" here? I shared actual costs to show what good quality care of a fairly healthy dog costs in an expensive city. Received a lot of downvotes because I included donation money in the $2,100 Adoption cost (which is like, less than 4% of the total so its really not a factor and outside the main topic altogether). To the person who PM'd me with message how "stupid" I am to "throw money out the window"...:get a life. Could I do all of the above at half the cost? Of course, but again, that's not the topic here. I’m being charged for a subscription I cancelled two years after I cancelled it Posted: 10 May 2020 08:51 AM PDT Very very long story short, I paid for a meal plan subscription from a company two years ago, and it wasn't what I was expecting so I emailed to cancel my subscription. A month after my email I asked to cancel again so I wouldn't be charged. I didn't get a response and got charged again, so I emailed once again to ask for my subscription to be cancelled and for my money back since I asked to cancel before the next billing period. I got a reply that my subscription was cancelled but I wouldn't get a refund since I waited too long. I then disputed the charge, and was threatened by the company who said "I see you have taken this further. This will not end in your favor as I have evidence against you. Would you like to drop the dispute to avoid further fees?" I didn't drop the dispute and blocked the company from being able to charge me for two years. Recently I found some charges from Australia, where I've never been, and I disputed them. I finally contacted that company and found out the meal plan company has been trying to charge me with varying degrees of success. I asked them to stop the charges and they said that they just act on behalf of the other company and they can't do anything and to take it up with the meal plan company. I emailed the company and the owner to tell them to stop charging me, but like I predicted they haven't responded. I called my credit card company who has refunded all of the charges from the company and blocked them from being able to charge me for four years. Is there anything else I can do besides cancel my credit card? It's honesty a little scary that this company threatened me and followed through and I feel powerless and like I'm being hunted by them. I posted this on r/legaladvice but I haven't heard anything. Thanks for your help. EDIT: several of you suggested that I make sure I contact my credit card company and turn off the auto update feature. I just did that, and will be getting a new card with a new number Tuesday. The very nice lady who helped me said that zero recurring charges will show up on the new card, which lifted a weight off my shoulders. I really appreciate all of you who took the time to read my conundrum and offer your advice and suggestions. Thank you all so very much for your help! Posted: 10 May 2020 04:59 AM PDT I work at a large company in VA, and we were recently told that we would be WFH for the rest of the year. I moved to Arlington VA in Jan for this job and only got about 2 months in the office before we went fully remote in mid-March. I've been working from my studio apartment ever since, but it is becoming very lonely. I have decided to break my lease, put my furniture into storage, and drive back home to TN to stay with my parents until this blows over and we return to the office. This would save me approx $2,000/month not having to pay rent, and I think it's a better decision for my mental health. I fully plan to return back to the DC area once we are given a date to do so. My question is around how I would file state income taxes next year for 2020. If I live in VA from Jan - June which taxes on income and then live TN for the rest of the year, which does not tax income, would I only owe partial state income tax to VA for the months I lived there? I will still be employed at the company, which is located in VA. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 May 2020 01:37 PM PDT Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place to post this. Mother just passed away a few days ago (the 6th) and we have questions that we aren't sure of. 1) She was on SSDI. She was paid on the first of every month. Is it possible that SS will come back and ask for that back? 2) Would she still qualify for the stimulus check? She hasn't filled for taxes because of SSDI and irs can not confirm if she gets it. 3) Medicaid can pay up to 1200 for funeral costs. What is the qualifications for this. She was denied and we are trying to figure out why. Any help or point me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks everyone! [link] [comments]

Being claimed as a dependent at age 25? Posted: 10 May 2020 02:39 PM PDT Claimed as a dependent at 25? My bf who is 25 recently found out his dad has been claiming him as a dependent in his taxes. He did not receive a stimulus check due to this. He makes around $50K a year and his dad makes over $100 K. He wasn't aware that he was being claimed as a dependent and only recently found out. He asked me if that is okay and I kind of remember my accountant telling me that you aren't allowed to be claimed as a dependent past the age of 23 and if you make over $3K a year but I am not sure if that is correct. I understand his dad claiming him as a dependent because he still lives at home but I don't know if that is the right situation in this case and I don't want my bf to be negatively affected. We will also be moving in together Later this year and I want to know if him being claimed as a dependent could have any negative impacts or if him filing independently next year could have any issues. Thank you ! [link] [comments]
High Dividend ETFs as a passive investment worth it? Posted: 10 May 2020 12:30 PM PDT Hi new member. I have been having an internal debate about investing into a High Dividend ETF ($SCHD) in a non-tax advantaged account. I have some room in my budget to invest another $1k right now. I am currently investing $1k a month into an S&P 500 index (I am young 24 so I am100% in stocks). I add another $500/month into an IRA and put 8% into company 401k with a 7% match. Would passive investing into a high dividend ETF make sense/be worth it at my age? I am thinking if I could continue to add money every month I would have a large enough amount where my dividends could add up to a nice sum in 10-20 years. I know I would be getting taxed at 15% capital gains for any dividend distribution but I still think if I grow the fund large enough I would still have a nice sum of dividend income. Can anyone give me some insights on this? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Should I transfer my CC debt to a new card? Posted: 10 May 2020 03:52 PM PDT I have about $6500 USD in CC debt. Credit Karma is recommending that I transfer the debt to a new card with 0% intro APR. I feel like this is a good move, but out of an abundance of caution, I wanted to ask here first. Edit: 18 months at 0%. 13.99% - 23.99% for the new card. 22.99% is the rate on the card my debt is currently on. 3% transfer fee. [link] [comments]
Advice for an 18 year old moving out with little savings? Posted: 10 May 2020 07:34 PM PDT Long story short, I'm at my wits end with my parents and their mistreatment of me, so I've decided to move out. I recently completed my first year of university, so Ill be moving to the city where my university is located, which isn't super far from my home. (About 2 hours) I have a temporary job lined up at Amazon for $15/hour about 40 hours a week. I would start the 24th. I also have a side job online until mid June that's about $100 a week. I've seen a few people on websites like Craigslist offering a room and bathroom in a nice apartment for about $400 a month. I would move into one of those and work until the school year begins, during which I would move back onto campus. Next summer, I should be able to get an apartment with a few friends. I have a few scholarships, and my parents will continue paying the remainder of my schooling. They'll likely pay for my car insurance and phone bill for the forceable future, and I'm also under their health insurance. I have about $400 saved currently, the only issue right now is that my car is broken down and will need to be fixed this week. It is a relatively reliable and decent car. I'm not sure what the issue is though, and with my current relationship with my parents, they will likely make me pay for the fix, which could be a lot. But I'm not sure if they'll make me, but I'm planning on it just in case. I'm kinda nervous, but any advice would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]
Will I still be eligible for unemployment (even partial) Posted: 10 May 2020 03:40 PM PDT Indiana for location So I work in a restaurant. I was working ~15hrs/week for an avg of 25/hr before we closed. We're to reopen this week at 50% capacity. I was only scheduled 8 hours this week. Will I still be eligible for unemployment? I'm worried because my unemployment claim period included a large gap when I was moving for college, so my benefit is only 54/week, and I'll be making more than that working, but not nearly enough to pay bills. Any insight is appreciated! Thank you! [link] [comments]
How much should I save to my 401k if I have a pension Posted: 10 May 2020 06:14 AM PDT Reddit, I need your help. For context, I'm 28, my I started a new job just before COVID-19, and it comes with a fully employer-paid defined benefit pension plan (as well as a small employer-paid social security supplemental plan). If I stay at this job for another 30 years, I'm looking at a pension worth about 60% of my income, plus social security and the SS supplemental, so probably 80% income replacement. But there's 5-year cliff vesting for both pensions, so if this job doesn't work out or I want to go to a different company in the next 5 years, I get nothing. And if I vest but don't stay here for the rest of my life, the pension's value will diminish greatly over time due to inflation. Before I started, I was at another firm with a 401k with generous employer matching, so I maxed out my 401k. Finally, I took a ~12k gross pay cut to come to my new job, for quality of life reasons. But the new pension does help even that out a bit. With all this together, I'm trying to decide how much to contribute to my new 401k, which I just got access to. It doesn't have any match. With my paycut, and the uncertainty of COVID, I'm tempted to put the money I was putting into my 401k into my emergency fund, which is currently at $8,000, or about 3 months of bare bones expenses. But I am also worried that if I don't stay here for five years, I'll have lost 5 years of tax-advantaged savings without a pension to show for it. So, should I: A) max out my 401k and slowly grow my e-fund? B) aggressively grow my e-fund and contribute little to my 401k? C) split the difference and go for, say, 9500 into the 401k and 9500 into the e-fund? I'm leaning towards C, but I am not 100% sure. [link] [comments]

I'm almost 18, and I know nothing. Resources to read? Posted: 10 May 2020 09:30 AM PDT My dad has failed me in the sense of teaching me about finances. He himself knows nothing. We live paycheck to paycheck as any other money is spent on stupid things, like cigarettes, booze, or yet ANOTHER speaker (that's just going to sit in a box). I don't want to live like that, and he evidently has taught me nothing (and he knows nothing anyways). On to my question. I'm nearly 18, and I plan on moving out as soon as possible. But I know absolutely nothing about finances. Are there any resources at all, or tips, that you could suggest for a young person who knows nothing? When Should I Apply for a Promotion/How do I Advance in Life? Posted: 10 May 2020 06:26 PM PDT Hello all, I am a 24 year old who graduated from a large university with a bachelors degree in Geology in December of 2018. After trying to find a job in my field for six months while working at a liquor store part time and living at my mother's house, I was finally hired and began working as a Geologist for a privately owned company in July of 2019. The job paid $22/hour, however I was essentially a glorified construction worker and didn't really do any Geology work at all. The conditions and schedule were absolutely brutal (Waking up at 2:00 AM to drive 7+ hours away, working in the heat, then driving home and waking up early again the next day) and my boss (the owner) was not a very nice or understanding person. I quickly found that the job would not be sustainable as I received no PTO or sick time and was constantly on the brink of exhaustion. After three months, I resigned without putting my two weeks in when I fell ill and the owner called me to let me know that he'd need a doctor's note for me to return to work, even though he did not provide health insurance. Following that, my old manager at the liquor store rehired me within a week of my resignation and I began searching for sustainable employment. After many applications and another three months of searching, I was hired by a large DME company that deals with respiratory equipment and medication as a customer service representative around four months ago. I am employed at a local branch, meaning that this is not a call center job. It pays $16/hour. So far, things have gone well and my manager has been impressed with my performance, as I do much more than deal with customers. I overlook qualifying documentation for insurance companies and contact nurses from major hospitals regarding patients regularly, as well as many other things. I am set to move out of my mother's house into an apartment with some of my buddies in three months and have recently financed a vehicle. Once I move out, things will be tight with my current income. Honestly, I absolutely do not want to get stuck as a customer service representative forever. Although my people skills are relatively good, the job I'm working now doesn't even require a degree and I majored in a science because I enjoy science and math. I don't want to get stuck where I'm at now, guys. I guess I'm confused as to where I go from here, really. Should I try and apply to better roles within my current company or is it too soon? If not now, when? Should I just try to land a Geology job working for the state/government, since working for a private company didn't work out? I'm just very worried about where I can go from here, because I feel like "Customer Service Representative" does not look impressive at all on my resume and I'm going to need to start making more money if I ever want to get out of debt and live comfortably. Thank you for reading my post and please comment if you have any insight or advice for me. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 May 2020 06:13 PM PDT Been digging through tenant laws forever and can't find a good answer for what the longest term for a renew date in Arizona can be, legally. For example, to be extreme, could a landlord put a term in the lease stating that they must state their plan to leave 11 months and 29 days before the end of the lease or it automatically renews thus screwing the tenant over if they hadn't noticed this in the lease initially? There must be some limit, right? In Arizona: My lease ends in August and I plan to move out and let my landlord know; however, my landlord says that I must give a 6 month notice before august, and that my lease automatically renewed for a full year until Aug2021 as I hadn't informed him in February that I want to leave. I have only ever needed a 30 day notice. Is this 6 month term in my lease legal? [link] [comments]
Is it smart to open a new checking account at 18? Posted: 10 May 2020 09:59 AM PDT Right now I am 17 and I have an account under my mom's. I turn 18 on the 28th of this month and I want my own account where I can manage my own money. Is it smart opening a brand new account when I turn 18? I was thinking Ally bank. Also since I'm moving away for college in the fall, the bank I currently have an account in is a local bank that doesnt have any locations where my college is. [link] [comments] |
