Tech/Software industry will survive (maybe even thrive?) during Covid-19 - but what about Sales & BDR roles for these companies?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 03:26 AM PDT

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I feel many Tech/Software/SaaS based companies will be fine for the next few months. At least for those who aren't providing a solution to Hospitality, Service Industry, Tourism, Travel. There will still be a big demand for Software Developers, Data analysts, etc as we prematurely settle in quicker to the incoming digital era.

But what about Sales/BDR roles in these companies? I just started a new position at the beginning of March for a SaaS company, based in a European capital with many Tech opportunities. It has been a very slow start from my side - I haven't brought in any meetings and it just hasn't clicked for me yet. Mainly due to the fact it has just been a huge uptake in standard from my previous role. In my previous role everything was done very slowly, we only used a few tools, and meetings took place just once or twice a week max. Here everything at a far quicker pace with far more stuff to learn and admittedly it has been an adjustment.

Both myself and my manager are being as pro-active as we can, trying to find a way to make things work better in April. But maybe things won't quite work out (not being negative, just realistic) so it would be good to have some contingency plans in place, in case they decide in May that this just wasn't the right fit.

So, how do you guys envision these next 2/3 months going? Will Tech companies strictly confine their new hiring to the Software and Tech folks? Or do you think there will still be BDR/Sales Rep positions open in the summer? I guess this discussion has already started in previous threads, but thought I'd just add this on.

Is a degree in professional sales worth it?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 10:15 AM PDT

Over the corona-cation I've been reevaluating my educational goals, I'll be attending Arizona state next year as a marketing major with a focus in professional sales. My overall goal in my career is to make good money and not absolutely hate my job. My passion is people, so I thought sales would be right for me. Anyway is a degree in professional sales valuable or would my money be better spent elsewhere?

Is anyone else (under payroll) purchasing additional sales help (e.g. running ads, hiring VAs) with his own money to hit her/his numbers ?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 02:48 AM PDT

I've been joining paid business networks, hiring VAs, running my own ads to hit my numbers. Anyone else doing this ? Someone could argue it's my company's responsibility. Also I could maybe work harder myself with could calling, however I found this a convenient approach.

Which one of you degenerates work weekends?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:23 PM PDT

SaaS BDR WFH since February, was able to exceed Q1 quota by a hair. These past couple of weeks have been rough for me, especially when my territory is heavily impacted by Covid-19. Some friends have been put on PIP's and management is raising KPI's. I was thinking about putting in a hour or two extra on the weekends to prospect/linkedin/email. I'm determined to crush this quarters quota even with the situation going on. I definitely see myself becoming an AE end of year assuming this virus doesn't go any further out of control. I am really grateful to still have a job and see that promotions around me are not impacted by Covid.

How do you block out the noise?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I recently started in sales, and I've been listening to podcasts and speaking with established sales people. The one thing I've realized is that everyone has a different opinion on everything. I love listening to tips and advice but when I keep getting different opinions, it gets confusing, and I'm not sure how/where to go from there. For example, I just listened to a podcast episode where someone says you shouldn't ask a lead/prospect when they have a few minutes to chat because its too salesy, which really confused me.

    Project Interview about Salesforce Management

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 11:05 AM PDT

I am a Senior at the University of Central Oklahoma, majoring in Professional Sales and I need to interview an Outside-B2B sales manager that has at least five people in their salesforce. It's just a quick interview about how their sales force works and a little general background information about themselves. I have been looking around my area for someone to interview but with COVID-19 still running ramped, I haven't had any luck so I figured this would be a good place to ask around. Please PM me if there is any way you can help me out, I would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Who's easier to sell? Small business owners or C-level executives? B2B

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 09:31 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I just want to read out your experiences selling to these two types of clients. Which do you think is easier to sell? What tricks do you use on each of them in order to get through the door keepers and get to the decision maker and engage them?

    Let me know your answers

Are you still being paid your commission?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 03:10 PM PDT

My company recently announced it is holding off on paying sales commission in order to conserve cash flow. I was wondering if anybody has had any similar experience or currently experiencing this. If so what remedy or legal approach have you taken to collect on those commissions? I've read that it is considered breach of contract in most court systems.

How do you use Salesforce to prospect?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 04:25 AM PDT

I have an SDR interview coming up with an SaaS company and in the job description it says I'll be using Salesforce to prospect into new verticals and territories.

I'm about to graduate and have no experience with Salesforce or sales. I do have a vague idea around how it works and what it does, but I'm just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers as to things I could say during the interview to let them know I've done my homework despite my inexperience?

    Thanks!

    Advice on getting sales help

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 03:58 AM PDT

My background is in software engineering but I need to do some sales and marketing to get more growth than organic. I tried to learn a bit but I feel I need help from more experienced salespeople.

Short of hiring someone, can you give me some advice on how to get help with selling? Are there norms I should know about regarding the split between base and commission? Do some salespeople work freelance part time? Are there good websites?

    I'm open to all ideas

    Covid-19 Sales Approach

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:48 PM PDT

I'm in outside sales. Targeting manufactures and distributors. Obviously I'm limited to hitting the phones full time. Regardless of the industry you sell in, what has your approach been over the last month or so? I'm feeling a little disrespectful at times.

Finding Companies That Promote Internally? (SDR - AE) NYC

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:24 PM PDT

Hi all, hope everyone is staying safe!

Looking for an entry level SDR role in NYC, its very important to me to find companies that plan to promote their SDRs within a reasonable timeframe. I fully intend to pay my dues and learn the ropes, which I'm excited for but I don't want to be put in a position where I'm an SDR for years with no hope of promotion.

Many job postings talk about career progression but after looking at many many SDRs/AEs on LinkedIn, it seems like A LOT of companies keep their SDRs there for upwards of 2 years or more. It seems like most people on here believe 1 year of SDR is adequate so I've made that my goal, as I want to progress my career in a timely fashion. Obviously I realize that I'd have to earn the AE position by overperforming, which is my main goal, but I just want to set myself up in a company that'll be willing to promote me.

My question is how do you guys go about finding companies that promote internally within a reasonable time frame? Thanks guys!

Sales Pros, I need help with an assessment for a job

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:50 PM PDT

    Hi Guys,

I work in the trade show industry and got laid off recently due to coronavirus after 8 years of working with my company. I have secured an interview with a new company and passed to round 2. They require me to do an assignment which I have completed. Normally I wouldn't sweat it so much but I really need this position. There is a final section which I wanted to get your opinion on and see what you would do with this. It's pretty simple but I need it to be perfect. I'm staying anonymous and wont be naming the company for obvious reasons. Please message me so I can send it over to you and get your thoughts on this.

Is this a red flag ?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:03 PM PDT

I've had suspicions around the quality of my territory.

I've been working this patch since I started as an SDR back in late 2018. I was promoted into an AE role in the same patch in late 2019.

My patch has never seemed to get the same love as the others in terms of the # of quality leads. My leads are mostly crap due to the amount of startup companies that inquire about our product, and our SaaS platform/use cases aren't specifically marketed toward other SaaS companies. They are MUCH harder to create quotes for. At that, I'm handling SMB accounts (<$100m) and we're heavily priced to cater large enterprise accounts.

What's really making me start to believe my territory is crap, is that there has been a revolving door in the two AE positions above my revenue band. Nothing like any other region in the company. Right now, there are two open AE spots and also an open Sales Director role.

I know I haven't given out a lot, but does this sound like a red flag to anyone else?

Scott Ingram, host "Sales Success Stories," offering FREE, full access to 2018 & 2019 Sales Success Summit for podcast subscribers during COVID-19

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:34 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm so excited to share this with you all ...

I am a huge fan of Scott Ingram from top1.fm aka Sales Success Stories podcast. I recently email subscribed to his 2nd podcast, Daily Sales Tips which got me a free download of any of the video presentations from the 2019 Sales Success Summit.

I got my email confirmation and replied to it with the video of my choice that I wanted to download.

I was shocked when I got a reply directly from Scott himself telling me that he was going to do me one better than just a single video download from the 2019 Summit -- he was going to give full access to the entire Summits from 2018 and 2019, for new podcast subscribers, due to the COVID 19 issues everyone is dealing with.

Just to give you an idea of the depth/breadth of this promo ... the 2018 Summit consists of ~8 hours of video (12 different vids) and is regularly priced at about $90 ... the 2019 Summit consists of ~11 hours of video (21 different vids) and is usually priced at approx $130.

To get the promo codes, all you need to do is:

    • go to dailysales.tips
    • scroll down until you see the section to "Join the Listener List"
    • input your name and email address, and then wait to get an automatic email confirming your email address and inviting you to reply with your choice of video
    • reply, but go ahead and reply mentioning the full access COVID 19 promo, you should get a personalized reply with the 2 promo codes and instructions on how to redeem the promo codes and download both Summits

DISCLAIMER/FYI: I did talk to Scott before posting this here, so he is aware and gave permission for me to share this with everyone here on this subreddit. :) He also stated he has to do the promos by hand so he asked that everyone be a little patient as they won't be coming instantly like the auto-responder emails. :)

Now, everyone go get some Sales Success!!

PS: I am not affiliated in any way with Scott or his podcasts, I'm just a huge fan and supporter of his stuff!
