Posted: 04 Apr 2020 06:04 AM PDT Original post here [FLORIDA] My car was towed from my own complex due to "expired registration,", even though the registration was never expired. I tried explaining this to the tow company, even showed them the registration, and they said they just tow when the HOA or the spotters tell them to tow. I talked to the HOA, they admitted in writing that the car was wrongfully towed, but won't issue a reimbursement because (direct quote):
Should I just take these people to small claims court at this point? I also plan on reporting the towing company to any and all regulatory authorities, just so they have something on file, because this is not the first or second time they've done this to someone in my neighborhood. I spoke to a gentleman here whose car was also illegally towed under astounding circumstances. [link] [comments] |
Long Overdue Update: Neighbor is shit-bombing my front yard Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:12 PM PDT Update to https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/9o3ge9/neighbor_is_shitbombing_my_front_yard/ Hi everyone! Remember me? I sure forgot about you...but not intentionally! Please accept my sincerest apologies. My wife and I have been on all sorts of adventures - moving out of the state, living in an RV with too many cats, a meth-crazed former friend going on a rampage, and delirious dad dementia drama - it has been a wild ride. You can thank everyone's new best buddy, CoVID-19, for providing me with the time (AKA being in quarantine) to remember to get on this. A shout out goes to a couple of to -remain-unnamed Redditors for poking at me to finally update. The shit-bombing neighbor situation ended up having a different resolution than we could have ever imagined. As you may or may not remember, we were planning on talking to his kids. The next time someone rolled around we pounced, talking to his son. It turns out they suspected ol' turd tosser was suffering from early onset dementia. That led to a "Well...fuck" moment. Where some people get all loopy and nice or just shut down altogether, crap cannon turned into a Grade A Asshole. I could relate completely: my father also suffers from dementia and, just like feces flinger, he was gone enough to be a huge fucking nuisance for anyone unfortunate enough to be around him but not far enough for the kids to get guardianship. Just like us, they were waiting for the shit to hit the fan (pun intended) so the authorities would step in, an evaluation could be done, and they might get some legal leverage on their dookie dumping daddy's bad behavior. So we set up a camera on that part of our yard and waited until he did it again. He never dumped shit in the yard again - we're guessing the son talked to him - but he did take his dog over to drop a deuce in our yard. Evidence in hand, we called the police, kept it to "just the facts" (Thanks, Joe Friday), and hoped they'd do something. They talked to shit shoveler, he promised to knock it off, and you know what? He actually stopped. We moved shortly thereafter and heard a few months later from the new tenants (they're friends of ours) that his property is for sale. I'm guessing the kids finally got him the help he needs. Everyone hug now: happy ending! Mods, feel free to leave comments open at your discretion, I deserve some chiding for taking an entire year to update. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Apr 2020 04:59 AM PDT Lease matures on the 15th, Toyota graciously offers an extra 10-day return period. Then they state that dealerships aren't accepting lease returns at this time and tell me my options are to either 1. Extend the lease month to month or 2. "Virtually ground" my car. Which apparently entails taking a picture of the odometer and parking my car in the driveway. I am not allowed to drive the car, but they are telling me I would have to continue paying my insurance. The liability is pretty clear here. I don't want to extend my lease and I don't want to store someone else's car in my driveway and pay insurance. Is there any other options here I am missing? Assulted at work by a customer, job doesn't have workers comp. Posted: 04 Apr 2020 11:10 AM PDT I work at a car rental place. A gentleman dropped off a car dirty and we were going to call him to tell him that we were charging a cleaning fee ($300). We stopped midway through calling him and decided I should take pictures to see if the manager thinks it's worth it to charge the fee. He calls us back after we disconnect while its rining, and I just tell him it's a misdial. He starts asking me about whether the car was good. I said it's a little dirty, but we are getting it checked in now. He starts going off about the cleaning fee and gets real belligerent screaming stuff like "charge me the 300 bitch" and "see what happens". I hang up the phone on him after he gets loud and isnt listening to me. I go outside to take the pictures and the guy walks up on me and continues screaming at me over this fee and asking me why I'm taking pictures. He gets in my face as I'm starting to get loud and say I'm just doing my job, the cleaning fee hasnt even been decided yet. He gets within an inch if my face and is still screaming, which at this point I scream get the fuck out of my face and I proceed to try to take a step back. At the same time, he sucker punches the right side of my face and I go down. Then he holds my neck down and hits me a few more times before I'm able to get up. I get up and go inside my job and tell them to call the police and that I was just assulted. The cops came and the guy also happened to be pulling back up to the store at the same time. Cops talked to him, then me and basically said they cant arrest him because of Covid and I should go to the jail to file a warrant. I went to the jail and they said they aren't taking applications for warrants. I went to the ER and they said my jaw is broken in 2 places and I have to have surgery to wire it together. The owner of the location I work at (it's a franchise) claims she doesn't have workers comp because she doesn't have enough workers on staff to legal be required to have it. However our state laws say 3 or more employees require it, and she has more than 3 employees. I'm not sure what legal action I can take or what I should do at this point but the surgery is around 20k and I cant afford that. I'm just looking for some guidance on what I should do. Thank you. TLDR: Customer broke my jaw at work, job claims they are required to have workers comp so they don't. Edit: This is in Georgia, USA. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Apr 2020 12:53 PM PDT [Texas] We were dropping off a patient at a local facility for a possible COVID, and the tech working there took the oral temp of my patient, didn't wipe the fucking thing down, then asking me and my partner to remove our N95's so he could get an oral temp. My partner consented and I refused stating the Policy that my service and his hospital had in place which was a mask at all times around any patient, I stated I would use the temporal he had in his cart, or would go get our unit which is the exact same make and model of the device he was using, he refused stating I would not be able to come in to the hospital. I stated sure I just won't come in if he can't do either of those so he went and grabbed the bed and we transferred the patient outside. All peachy? Wrong. My partner called the Chief and told them what happened and when I got on the phone they started yelling about how was I did was "insane" and that I should "trust" the facility to properly decon the equipment even though I witnessed them not decon it. I also stated our company policy and the hospital policy of not taking off an N95 around a patient which they said they didn't care and it was a direct order to follow whatever the hospital tells me to do. I stated there is no way in hell im getting something shoved in my mouth during a pandemic, nor am I taking an N95 off around a fucking covid patient. I was immediately sent home. This morning I was informed I had been terminated for "insubordination". And during the meeting I explained that I had followed both company and hospital procedure. The Chief then stated he is now firing me for an "unrelated reason" and stated there was a time 8 months ago where I was 2 minutes late and that I am in a at will to work state. Any thoughts on this? Is it legal for an Under-age American Girl to be dating a 26 year old that's in Sweden? Posted: 04 Apr 2020 11:59 AM PDT Exactly the title. I'm a 15 year old and I'm simply just trying to protect my friend, but she's claiming that there are loopholes around it and she's not listening since she's so Deeply in love with this Swedish man. Sorry If this isn't formal, just looking for advice to fix this. [link] [comments] |
State police want to return confiscated drug money to me. I want it but am highly skeptical. Posted: 04 Apr 2020 04:30 AM PDT This is in Pennsylvania. Was arrested for criminal use of a communication facility 2 years ago. They confiscated almost $1000 at the scene along with drugs and cell phones. Got charged, plead guilty, went to jail, completed probation, everything is clear. Been paying on my fine every month too. Yesterday the arresting officer called and asked if i wanted it back. He said it would cost more to go through the proceedings to seize its worth. Basically saying because its a small amount that it would cost the court more than $1000 to properly seize it. Is this legitimate? it feels legit, surely they can't charge me with a crime just for accepting that money can they? [link] [comments] |
Housemates vanished the day rent was due, left and ambiguous note and blocked me Posted: 04 Apr 2020 08:29 AM PDT Hi all, The situation: As we all know COVID-19 has been a huge stressor for tenants who are struggling financially. Thankfully my landlord is being very flexible regarding rent payments. Last week I texted my housemates/two sub tenants who are NOT on the lease and asked them if they needed any assistance or support through this time and that our landlord would be flexible with us. I happened to be staying at a family members house during this past week because I wanted a bit of a bigger space to live out our social distancing. Well I started to get a sneaking suspicion something was up when I saw that my message wasn't going through to one of them. I texted the other and asked what was up and to let me know since they are dating. He said she wasn't responding to him either. Another red flag. I decided to get home that same night, and unfortunately my suspicions were correct. I found a note that said "boyfriends name has the keys, he said he'd be back. Contact him. Thanks for everything" Now here's the issue, I never got a verbal or in writing "I'm moving out", I can't get ahold of the boyfriend, he's who knows where and I don't know what my rights are regarding abolishing our agreement for them to stay here. Especially given the nature of the corona virus evictions. Oddly enough, their stuff is still here in the bedroom and kitchen. It's all really gross and I don't want to clean it, they were slobs. To be clear they missed rent three days ago, this is the first time. My plan so far: I looked up some tenants rights in California and served them a three day to pay rent or quit. I posted it on their bedroom door (which they haven't seen), and sent them a pdf document saying they needed to respond or get out within three days. On the third day if they haven't responded I have prepared a abandoned property legal document to say we will hold on to their stuff for 18 days and then we will be disposing if it. Is there anything more I can do right now?? I really need to clear and fill the space ASAP considering I've lost my job and need assistance paying rent. I can't afford a place by myself in California and the back rent owed for their half. It's taking everything in me not to just immediately throw it out. But one of them completely blocked me and the other isn't responding and hasn't come home. Any answers helps and I really appreciate it. Edit: reposted with mods permission. [link] [comments] |
(Vancouver, BC) Moved into a place i found on craigslist, lock changed this evening.... Posted: 04 Apr 2020 03:14 AM PDT terribly embarrassing, I am renting a room. Tonight when i came home the lock had been changed. All my medicine and medications were in the room. I called police for help. They came here and told me that because there was no contract on paper they are allowed to do that. No paperwork, nothing. My research online had told me that verbal contracts are binding. Some advice would be great. I am in burnaby. [link] [comments] |
[SoCal] my neighbor abuses her dog. Posted: 04 Apr 2020 11:58 AM PDT We've tried to contact animal control, Property manager, and LBC Police. We've sent in proof of the abuse such as her pouring soap into the dogs eyes and grabbing it by the collar and putting it down the stairs outside. She leaves the dog in small cage for days at a time and come homes and it's it because it made a mess in its cage. Animal control closed the case saying it wasn't bad enough. Others in my complex have complained as well. She threatened my roommate the other day because of it. We are not sure what to do. She is giving it a bath outside with cold water from the fountain. It's 60 degrees. She has it chained up on the stairs so it can't really touch the floor. Please help. [link] [comments] |
I (18F) want child support from baby (2F) daddy (21M) but scared Posted: 04 Apr 2020 08:28 AM PDT Long story!! BACKGROUND: So, I had my daughter at 16 and I was with her father at the time. I was going to school and working basically full time after she was 5 months. His mother would watch her while I was at school/work. She had mentioned to me a few times that he would do things before taking care of my daughter. ex; he had to make and eat his food before he made/fed daughter's. I also asked him (when our daughter was first born) not to allow strangers/ people I didn't know hold our baby. Later found out he was allowing people to touch and hold her when she was only a few weeks old. Then when we broke up, the day after, he wanted to see her, so I let him. I came to pick her up and he wasn't even spending time with her, his mom was watching her. Anyways, later down the road, his friend starts talking to me and asked me if he (the father) ever took care of our daughter. I said no, that I had to basically beg him to pay for her medication because my family was providing other essentials. After that, BDs mom texted me, mad that I called him a "deadbeat" yet I never used that term. And she goes on talking about the things that I told her daughter? But all I said to her daughter was that me and her brother were never getting back together. So, I blocked him on social media and one day I wanted to talk to him and let him know how his daughter was doing and I didn't respond because I was busy and he started cursing at me about "ignoring" him and said "you better let me see my daughter or your ass is done" and after that I called a detective and he told me to stop contacting him and block him. So I blocked him and his family and haven't spoken to him since. He hasn't seen our daughter since she was 7-8 months old, she's now 2 years old and 3 months old. I've wanted child support from him, but I've been scared that the courts will allow him to see her. I don't know what actions to take. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I live in Ohio. Mom is getting more and more abusive. What can I do? (TX) Posted: 04 Apr 2020 07:00 AM PDT My mom isn't the worst mom ever. In fact a few years ago she was pretty great, but after my dad passed she's become this new person. She's been mean and hateful and vindictive to everyone, but especially her children. But once she smokes some weed she's fine, it's just in the morning before that. She'll wake up screaming and beating on my siblings (ages 10, 7, 5) doors and calling them all sorts of names and demeaning things and telling them to get up and clean. This has been going on for a while and when the older sister told someone at school a CPS agent came and talked to us all but that was it. Then my mom was horrible to my sister about it for months. I went off to college and I thought things were getting better but now I'm back home because of the Coronavirus and i see it's so much worse. She's still screaming at them and telling them hateful things for example (I wish I died too then maybe you wouldn't be a ret*d and a little ungrateful piece of sht) and she's also started pulling their hair and dragging them, hitting them, etc. I don't know what to do. After she goes and smokes is better, she apologizes and we go about our day. But I feel so horrible for my siblings. If I call CPS she will know. They aren't at school, I'm the only one around. But if I take the risk and do call them, what is the chance that anything will even happen right now with COVID-19 going on?? And what if they take them away and stick them with me? I'm an 18 year old college student and I can't afford to support them all. I also don't want them in foster homes or separated though. I feel like I'm stuck in this place but I need to do something for my siblings. [link] [comments] |
Image Copyright(picrights) on unowned website Posted: 04 Apr 2020 12:43 PM PDT [Canada] Hello, I had a small web development business running 1-2 years ago, and for one of my clients I used an image off of google images on their site(dumb thing to do, should've been careful). However now after almost two years, the client told me that they have received a letter in the mail from picrights saying that AFP owns this image and that the picture needs to be taken down and they need to pay $900 CAD interesting thing however, is that the client doesn't actually own the website, the domain is registered on my name(not the client), and I own all the code for the website. Also, I tracked the image down to a post on Globe and Mail(Canadian news outlet), which makes me even more suspicious that AFP(a france news press) owns this image. I have removed the image after being notified by the client, but is it safe for the client to ignore this message? If anything shouldn't it be me that they are contacting? Only reason they would've contacted them is due to the business address being on the contact us page on their website. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Apr 2020 02:21 AM PDT I've been living with my mom in an emotionally abusive situation where I felt like I was being taken advantage of financially. My partner told me their roommate's boyfriend needed a roommate, and I was so desperate to escape my situation I jumped on the chance. Now I'm really regretting it. The intro rate for rent right now is $250 and he could barely even afford that because he spent all of his money, and then had his hours cut, and now essentially lost his job. First month he paid it with help from his boyfriend. Second month I had to pay it. I don't know how the fuck he's going to pay it when his half jumps up to $450. He's always shown mental instability and last night he messaged me while at work that he was going to commit suicide. I have past trauma related to suicide, one experience where I had someone threatening to kill themselves if I left them. I was freaking out. It lead to this dramatic situation at 2am and his boyfriend eventually got him to come back home after he ran off, presumably to attempt suicide. I left my mom so I could have a chance to heal and to repair the financial damage that was done to me and I feel like I might have fallen into something even worse. I am extremely unhappy. I either want him gone or I want my own space. I would struggle but I can afford the rent on my own. I'm just not paying for someone else I have zero obligation towards. Is there anything I can do to get out of this situation without wrecking my credit? Edit: I'm in Houston Texas and unfortunately both our names are on the lease. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Apr 2020 01:23 PM PDT Hi! I live in Portland, OR, USA. In early March, I came home to a short note taped to my front door that said "just wanted to give you a heads up...property management company is scheduled to take over on April 1st, 2020. signed from my landlord. I got a letter from the management company last week with the new address for rent and the option for an online payment option. I called repeatedly to get set up in their online system and when I finally reached them, they said they hadn't been provided with all the tenants contact information so it had been hard to set up? This was a red flag to me. I asked if they had a copy of my lease. They said they did. So I said then they had my contact information as it's written in my lease. I finally get an email with online rent access and it's showing I owe my monthly rent + a $1200 security deposit that is marked past due (and the due date is before I was made aware of the transfer of management). I paid this deposit via check the day I signed my lease last September. I pay my rent balance and leave the remaining past due balance. I called and emailed to ask about the past due bill. I finally got an email saying they hadn't gotten my deposit from my landlord yet and will update it when they do. I'm getting regular automated emails about my past due balance. My questions are: How long does my landlord have to transfer this money? Isn't this technically my money being held by the landlord and shouldn't I have gotten more formal notice in the manner? Is this something that I should just ignore until my lease is up in September and hope I get the $ back? Or should I be getting some sort of documentation of the transfer of the money now? Tl;dr Landlord hired a property management company last month but hasn't paid them my security deposit. I am getting a bill marked past due from the management company who say they will remove the charge once they get the money from my landlord. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Apr 2020 01:13 PM PDT NJ has shut down all non-essential businesses as of March 20th, so the studio's owners have recommended all employees file for unemployment while they are closed. They have asked their employees to do three things:
In my gut, I know all of this is wrong on so many levels, but I wanted to see if anyone had any good insight. It honestly sounds like they're trying to get employees to quit so they can fight unemployment while milking them for ideas and making a few extra bucks, but I'm not entirely sure...it could be straight up incompetence and ignorance. Posted: 04 Apr 2020 11:49 AM PDT Hi folks, this is a different sort of question and hopefully quick. I'm in NYC. Several days ago, police came round and put police tape up blocking off the trash area outside our building. They said a crime had been committed nearby and evidence had been dumped in our trash. They had someone there the rest of the day watching but when they left, they did not remove the police tape. Officers have not been back to my knowledge. The tape says Do Not Cross, and the area was a part of a serious crime. But also, I need to throw out my trash. What do I do? How long is it considered a crime scene? Is there someone I should contact? I threw some trash in the neighbor's bins but feel a bit bad about it. Thanks in advance for your input! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Apr 2020 06:34 AM PDT A towtruck tried to tow my friend's car last night. They were parked on the street - not illegally, no "no parking" signs, and she parks there all the time. When she asked why it was being towed, all he said was someone called to have it towed and that was the only explanation. She argued with him and he still made her pay the $125 fee. There was also a cop roaming the neighborhood but said he didn't call to have it towed. I told her I thought this was illegal but I'm not sure if drivers can even disclose who called/what they said. EDIT: parked on passenger side, not gated, no HOA/bylaws EDIT 2: the driver took a picture of her debit card. Is that normal? He said it was the only way he could take payment if she didn't have cash [link] [comments] |
Supervisor spreading my private information to other staff. Posted: 04 Apr 2020 12:52 PM PDT Delete if not allowed I live in BC Canada working as a Health Care Aid for a union, I opened up to my supervisor about my mental health in confidence for them to get a better understanding. I found out later, to my horror, that my supervisor told all of my other coworkers. Is there anything I can do? I know it's a silly question but I'm getting treated differently because of this leak of information. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Apr 2020 08:17 AM PDT I was supposed to close on a 4-year-old home in the city of Baltimore, MD on 3/30/2020. As of 3/26, the loan was finalized (with a mid 2's rate!), all appropriate documentation signed, and inspections completed. The home was being sold as a relocation sell, so we were able to negotiate a great price with closing cost help. We have airbnb'd out spare rooms to healthcare workers for years and already planned that as our immediate priority once in the new house. We also agreed with our current landlords that they could close our lease on 03/31. Everything was going far better than planned… then heard from our buyer's agent on 03/27. We couldn't close on the home anytime soon. The owner of our title company (let's call him 'Jeff') had already told us the previous owners never paid a water bill. We negotiated an escrow account to cover the highest "likely" back-log of payments and moved on with our lives. The previous owners had stated they had a water meter in the home. When he found they had never applied for an on-prem permit for this house, he decided that was the last straw. He and the agent (we'll go with 'Jane') went to the property to inspect the water meter. Jeff found that the water meter was in fact in the curb. He ran various tests to ensure it was the right house, the accuracy, etc…before accepting it was in fact 'our' meter that had a broken water main under it. Jane agreed. A few hours crunching numbers provided an estimate of nearly $150,000.00 of unpaid water. Obviously, we didn't know what to expect with the house. Our immediate needs were to A. Find a new place to live short term B. Find storage I really don't want to be verbose on the difficulties we had, but the short explanation was that we spoke to at least 10 different people whom alternated between cancelling and agreeing to provide the services several times a day. We finally found a storage and confirmed moving solution on Saturday the 28th. Another piece of the puzzle is that my rate lock expires on April 14th. My agent and broker think that this would be a 30-60 problem in normal operating circumstances. So there's an additional ~$5k. We were left with: - Unexpected payments for additional moving, storage, and supplies…. + sheer anxiety - A Rate lock extension if we want the home. We do. - Lost rental income (Airbnb) - Friends and family who are practicing social distancing (we did luckily find a place to stay until we get a new temp place) - Paying rent (included because that isn't going toward home ownership) - Previously paid services (inspection, etc.) We requested that our agent reach out to Jane and ask them to cover a rate lock extension and extra moving/storage expenses. We gave them options of lowering price or paying directly. Here's the kicker of all this- we got a simple response along the lines of: "No, this home is owned by [insert multinational airline corporation] and they can't afford to budge on anything. We'll settle the water issue, but if you want the home, you have to cover the rate lock and other expenses." I honestly don't know if anyone is wrong here. I'm angry that the city never found a problem, and disappointed that the previous owners just 'thought' water was free… and, more than anything, I'm more stressed than I have ever been in my life. By no means am I looking for a pity party- my partner and I both have jobs, and options for places to go. We know that we shouldn't be ungrateful. But I work in the healthcare IT space as a data SME. My work to analyze the COVID-19 impact has me clearing 15-20 hour days and the loss of my home (with less than 3 days to go) made this one of the most traumatizing experiences in my life. Do I have options here? Or am I totally at fault for not planning better? I would love to see a path towards still getting this home without having to foot $7-10k and loss of rent. tl;dr: Day before closing on new house, found out 150,000 water bill. Owner doesn't want to help with rate lock extension, do I have any options? Edit: purchase price was 365k and appraisal was 375k [link] [comments] |
