Should you trademark domain name? Posted: 05 Apr 2020 03:47 PM PDT Hi All Hope everyone is staying safe. As per the title, I am wondering if I should trademark my domain name? I am going to trademark company name and our logo, but am unsure as to whether it is necessary to also trademark domain name as once you purchase the domain name it's yours. Can anybody provide any advice on the matter? Are there any particular pros or cons one way o the other? [link] [comments] |
Being offered a different job position in the startup - What job is that? Posted: 05 Apr 2020 10:57 PM PDT I'm currently the lead designer in the startup that I've been in since the very beginning, we've been in operation since January 2019. In fact, I was the first hire of the company(not cofounder) and end up being in charge with a lot of things apart from design. So things like HR , admin, general project managing. The CFO that I've been buddy-buddy with approached me and asked if I wanna keep doing something like that but in the subsidiaries that we're going to open in other countries. He described it as :
So here's my question, what job position is that? Cause after the meeting with the C-level execs they can't quite agree on what to call me either and asked me to come up with a list then they'll argue about it until they all agree on a title. And yes I've expressed interest in the job. The one I suggested before :
What do you guys think? And if you're wondering, I've completely lost interest in design, I find myself wanting to do everything else other than design. It turns out I enjoy doing project management and I've expressed this to the CFO before. (CEO is aware of it too). And the potential pay is very good. [link] [comments] |
How do you solve problems you know nothing about? Posted: 05 Apr 2020 03:58 AM PDT When you have a problem in a particular area (like marketing, tech, legal, pricing, research etc.) and don't know anyone that can help give you advice, how do you solve those problems? I'm a tech guy, and have a pretty good network for marketing + acquisition. But my understanding of finance, legal, pricing etc. has gaps. Would love to know how you folks solve this. Posted: 05 Apr 2020 08:30 AM PDT Hi all Hope everyone is well and staying safe. I was hoping there may be some of you that are able to share your experiences of what it was like fundraising anywhere from pre-seed to late stage. More specifically, what was the due diligence process like with VCs both from a company perspective and from a founder/personal checks perspective. [link] [comments] |

Should UX/UI staff fall under the management of CTO or Head of Product/CPO Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:45 AM PDT Hi All Hope you are well. I would appreciate your perspective on whether you feel UX design staff etc should fall under the tech team i.e. under CTO or under the product team i.e. under Head of Product or CPO? I appreciate that in the early stages of a startup none of this matters really. But looking to the future I would like to know how best to align people. I also appreciate it's not one size fits all and it's kind of an intuitive thing that may evolve as time goes on, but would be interested to hear people's opinions and experiences. Thanks in advance for answers [link] [comments] |
Advice on changing our vertical? Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:48 PM PDT We're building an e-commerce search product. Currently in closed beta. The technology applies to pretty much any vertical, but instead of boiling the entire ocean, we chose Furniture & Home Decor as our starting category. However, with COVID-19, we're seeing a drop in consumer spending for that category. We're considering going open beta with a different vertical like "essential goods" [e.g. Hand Soaps, Gloves, etc.] Question: Think it's a good idea to ride the wave? Or hold out and hope the category recovers? Curious if others are considering pivoting things right now? [link] [comments] |
Is letting users fully keep their data a good approach? Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:06 AM PDT I'm thinking of building a desktop product where users can keep their data, instead of an online solution connected to my servers. On a user perspective it's great for privacy. On the other hand I often read that data is one of the most valuable resources for startups. Does my company have a smaller chance of success if I'm not collecting any user data? [link] [comments] |
Advice for how to sell a company. Posted: 05 Apr 2020 01:38 PM PDT I am working on marketing an EdTech startup and getting users for it. I am planning to eventually sell the company because I found a few larger companies that it would work well with. I am wondering about some things to do with selling a company. How many users will I need to get on the radar of these companies? Should I go to them or wait for them to come to me? Do I have to incorporate the company to sell them the code and Intellectual property? Hopefully some of you have experience. Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments] |
Launch Strategy... Launch to My Entire Pre-Signup List or Baby Step it and Segment Posted: 05 Apr 2020 10:47 AM PDT We're rushing out a product launch (B2C financial planning - which seems very timely given the current challenges). Anyone have experience with similar early launches and how they handled this and whether they would do it any different? Go big but jeopardize the list - fortune favors the bold? Or science experiment this in cowardly but practical bite size pieces? Our pre-launch signup list is 450 people. We have received a lot of positive feedback on our controlled, scripted product demos but a "here you go" experience is a different story. Our onboarding still needs work, tutorials need polish, and it is a complex product. But we've all heard the "if you aren't embarrassed by your initial release, then you have waited too long" As with all startups - it has taken time and $$ to get that list and the confidence piece comes into play. What if we're releasing too soon (even though everyone has bought into the value proposition) and they bounce? Re-capturing that market and re-engaging will take time and energy once that initial confidence is lost. Biting off 25% of that group seems like the logical piece. Being realistic, we'll be lucky if 50% of those folks actually engage. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
So how DO you find your app developer? Posted: 05 Apr 2020 07:24 AM PDT Hi all, Saw a great post yesterday on the issues that people have with Indian developers (will link it as soon as I get on my laptop!), and the general consensus seemed to be that Ukrainian (or Eastern European) developers were better quality and value for money than Indian ones. One big reason seemed to be that people would find the developers via a freelancing website, and the developer would be too scared to say no/disagree with the project owner (due to fear of losing the contract), and possibly be juggling multiple projects at once (and so doesn't commit as much to yours). It sounds like these reasons are more due to the fact that people are looking for developers via freelancing type websites. So if these don't work well, and it's the first point of contact for your average Joe, how are they supposed to find great (Indian or Eastern European) developers, without using the common freelancing websites? Your standard guy, who has an app idea and the spec prepared, and all they need now is someone to put it together. [link] [comments] |
Data Protection in Collecting E-mail Addresses for Beta Users Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:37 AM PDT Hi All Hope everyone is well. If I set up a landing page whereby people can sign up to a beta user for my app, how do I ensure I am storing their emails correctly in regards to data protection legislation? Can I just keep them in a spreadsheet with a password? What is the best practice? I am very early stage so don't have any CRM software or anything like that to keep customer info. Thanks in advance for your answers :) [link] [comments] |
Email Marketing when shifting to a SaaS conversion-based sales model Posted: 05 Apr 2020 08:39 AM PDT TL;DR: looking for a cost effective way to handle outbound notifications to all users and marketing journeys to a small percentage of users. Even best case scenario, conversion rate is likely to be very low, and we're dealing with a very large user base. I'm trying to figure out a way to handle a significant increase in our email requirements without blowing up our costs. I run the revenue side for our startup - we build, host and support a number of private networks. Our clients are very large enterprise associations, and they give access to our platforms to all of their members as a free benefit. The associations pay us, users get in free. We are now starting to sell in-platform upgrades and adjacent products in a store inside the platforms. Revenue shared to the associations for their member purchases. The percentage of users who will buy upgrades and products is very low, but increasing the delta even a small bit would lead to massive uplift in profitability. We currently just use a really rubbish email server for outbound notifications about platform activity. We aren't doing ANY active marketing mails to try to increase conversions. None. We are currently adopting Fresh Desk for user support and tracking. Cost doesn't really increase as the user base expands. We want to use Fresh Sales and Fresh Marketer for marketing mails. Since our costs there will expand as the contacts list grows, we will only add users into the contacts list if they take some action that indicates they could be converted, like they already visited the store for in-platform upgrades, or they added something to their cart without checking out. The vast majority of the user base will never visit the store, since the core functionality of the platform is freely available to them. So we will use Fresh Marketer and Fresh Sales to construct conversion journeys for users who have shown interest in the upgrade products, and for handling ongoing communication about the products with them. Maybe only 10% of the whole user base will make it into this contacts list. But we have will still have a lot of non-marketing, non-conversion emails to send as well. Tons. Notifications about in-platform activity, triggers to login based on other activity, etc. Obviously we can't treat all of that as if it's conversion-emailing, because it's not marketing, and it won't lead directly to any sales. So I need some kind of outbound email traffic handling system, one that is cheap on a per email basis. Maybe mailgun or sendgrid? We will still need some very basic journeys mapped there, like an onboarding journey etc. But not proper marketing stuff. Am I way off base here? From the start of the company, we've been selling very heavily-customized one off products for large enterprise clients, with no opportunity to make revenues from the actually users. So this world of user-paid upgrades is new to me! And we have now hit on a way of delivering an off-the-shelf version of some of our custom solutions, that could be really interesting to some of the individual association members. I don't want to screw this up! Thanks so much. Happy to provide feedback and detail on our journey here, if it's of interest. [link] [comments] |
