The key to a successful career is developing an aptitude for serendipity. I appeared in a podcast thanks to my Reddit post.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:31 AM PDT

I borrowed the term "aptitude for serendipity" from Max Stoiber's evergreen notes.

Someone finally described the way I achieved most things in my career other than "random encounter" or "you can't rely on things you can't automate and measure."

Today I wanted to share just one tiny win related to Reddit.

About two months ago, I shared here my blog post called "Pick the right market" .It received a warm welcome and netted over 250 upvotes.

Two days later, a Reddit user sent me a DM whether I'd be interested in a guest appearance in his podcast. For an avid podcast listener like me, loud "yes!" was a no-brainer.

The episode aired last week, where I had a pleasure to discuss my company, inspirations, routines, and bits of advice.

Despite undoubtful fun and satisfaction, It gave me an outlet to spread the word about my company, level-up my personal brand, and potentially find new clients. It all started with one short blog post shared in this subreddit. The upfront investment was negligible, yet I never thought of it as an investment per se. I did it purely for fun.

I'm not saying you should ditch all processes and rely only on serendipity, though. It's a reminder that you should always put yourself out there. Show what you got. Share your work, thoughts, content, anything you create. Even if you think it's not good enough yet, that's ok. Someone will find value in it. It is all in the very spirit of Learn in Public, and Build in Public.

In my case, I closed best deals by

    • replying to a tweet
    • writing a cold email
    • publishing a blog post

Put yourself out there. The downside is minimal. The upside is unlimited.

Laid off , No clue , but nothing will stop me from starting my own business

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:53 AM PDT

Im really , realllyyyy in the dark here. I was laid off, have no money, But I am going to start this small business. It should be inexpensive, I want to do a class maybe once a month. You see, I am a hillbilly :) im from deep in the appelation mts. I left with the shirt on my back and a bus ticket and made a life in south Florida in a nice town with older people, summer homes for the wealthy and upper middle class. This virus scare has everyone worried. What would they do if something prolonged happened. A solar flare, breakdown of infrastructure. I have the unique ability of self sustainability. But most do not have that preice of mind. I want to take on a couple of instructors besides myself. A native american from the Immokalee region to teach about native plants for food and medicine as well as a military ranger to teach his skills along with mine. How to prep, how to survive , first aid. The class will be expensive and include a "bug out bag" , maps, plant id books, trapping and fishimg and firestarting equipment, water purification...etc i feel like i would have very low overhead. And i know this is a great idea to both make money and help some people when things go bad. Im just ignorant to how. How to start and llc. Do i need insurance? what do i need to do to apply for some sba loans , i thought since this pandemic made me unemployed there may be good opportunity to get some seed money. Im really in the dark. Anyone with advice, please let me know. Anyone who may want to be part and help with this end. Let me know. Thank you

Desperately Need Software to Monitor Employee Performance

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:44 PM PDT

    Hi,

I own a manufacturing company comprised on teams that build cells that fit together to make complete systems. I need a software that each team or employee can input data like: "I made ____ cells" "____ of them passed inspection" "_____ of them failed inspection" "reason cell failed _____"

And creates a graphic image that represents the data per employee and/or team. Any advice? Production recently took a nose dive and I need to pin point where.

    Thank you!

    Cyber Security Company

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:51 PM PDT

Hi, hope you're all healthy and safe. So was thinking to make my own cyber security company, since in this pandemic the number of attacks has increased. Not just that also unlike some other fields in CS/IT security doesn't can't be replaced easily. I'm a software dev/sec researcher so it wouldn't be a completely new field for me. Do you guy's think it's a good idea and has anyone had experience in this field?

Also I would love to expand the idea and fight against cyber mobbing and cyber criminals. The "cyber police" in my country isn't that efficient so I would like to help out.

Good day to all, Just wanted to share a message that I saw the other day. When trying to sell a product or a service, you shouldn't be proving that your product/service is the best. You should actually show that you are the solution to their problems.

How has the pandemic affected your business? The good, the bad and everything in-between.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:38 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm Josh Muccio, creator of The Pitch podcast from Gimlet. A few weeks ago we decided to stop publishing our normal investor pitch episodes. Instead we started interviewing startup founders and small business owners who are trying to figure out how their businesses can survive in the new economy.

So far I've learned that yes, a lot of entrepreneurs have fallen on rough times. Many had to lay people off and it's only a matter of time before they do additional rounds of layoffs. But some have gotten really scrappy and found creative ways for their business to not only survive, but actually succeed despite the crisis.

So how has the pandemic affected your business? (Tell me the story of the last few months. Have sales completely dried up? If so, what were monthy sales before COVID and then what are they now? Describe the moment you first realized that this was going to affect your business? And then what did you do?)

PS: I'm also looking for entrepreneurs who are willing to open up on an upcoming episode of the show. If you'd rather not share publicly in this thread, you can DM me or fill out this form.

    Lying Customers

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:26 PM PDT

It really makes me feel bad when a customer is a liar. On amazon, ebay and my website with credit card charges all the cardholder has to say is they did not get their product and I have to pay for it. In most cases I prove that the product was delivered and get my money back. For instance; I have had customers return products that are years old like a latch on a boat and say I shipped it to them but in fact it was the original latch on their boat five or six years old but ebay gives them their money back and I have to prove it is not the latch I shipped them. Amazon also automatically gives them a refund. Same thing if it is on my website; the credit card bank automatically refunds the cardholder and I have to prove they received the order. If the package gets stolen or not delivered or delivered to the wrong address I pay for it. What I usually do is eat the loss but I want justice. What do you do?

Questions i have for professional photographers from a amateur

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:52 PM PDT

For all of my fellow professional photographers/ people that make a decent living from photography, i am curious as to how you went about finding the niche you felt your city needed. Personally, i am into dark and moody photography but the majority of people in my area seem to be interested in other types of photography styles and i am willing to adapt to what the needs of the people around me are. Also, how did you build your following/audience and client base personally. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How much coding should you learn before outsourcing a project?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:06 AM PDT

I'm looking to get an MVP built soon for a software education product. Think I am doing this right by spending the last month or so on the software my teams will be using?

    -C#

    -Blender

    -Unity

I am not a pro at any of these, and if you asked me to make a lot of simple things I probably would either take forever to do, or not be able to do them. I don't have the desire to take on the role of a programmer/animator.

However, I want to get to a decent level of understanding of all of these before outsourcing these projects. I will be likely spending the next 3 months or so learning these everyday. Not in the hopes to do it myself, but to be able to vet my programmers and manage the project better.

Anybody else done/doing something similar? Any level of proficiency you reached/recommend reaching before hand? I'd likely invest in a Western programmer to do oversight (assuming I have the capital for it) in the future, but probably have to do it myself for a while.

Those of you who believe you've achieved financial freedom, what's your story?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:43 AM PDT

When I say financial freedom, I mean those of you who have escaped the 9-5 jobs and whose businesses are able to keep them ticking over whilst being able to LIVE and enjoy life (obviously I don't mean all day everyday, I know SOME work is involved!)

How do you calculate which new product to sell, how to sculpt the brand?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:14 PM PDT

For example in companies every year they have to focus on where they invest their money (product, improve manufacturing machinery, brand & marketing).

Also on what new strategy they want to do (for instance to sell new products), what things they want to remove(things that are redundant), what things they want to tweak (tweaking the brand this year by investing more money to put out marketing videos, and social media influencer marketing).

Should this type of strategy be thoroughly calculated, and then formulate a calculated plan to roll out for the year? The idea is to do as thorough as a job coming up with the strategy and plan. Try to prioritize the most important things to be put into the plan to get done for the year get the most outcome. Next year do the same.

Over the years the entire business would of had been improved year by year.

Protecting IP while gathering business idea feedback

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:47 PM PDT

Hey All, first post on this community and I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn from you all. I have an idea, I don't think it's been done before based on my research. I can code it, I can ship it. I want to start gathering feedback from my target market and other businesspeople/entrepreneurs. However, I'm concerned that by sharing my idea, it puts my whole IP at risk. I've seen folks burned before by soliciting feedback and then later seeing a feedback giver become the CEO of a copy of said idea.

How do I protect my IP so I can move forward? Are there any lower-cost options before getting expensive patent attorneys involved?

    Question for experienced international importers.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:30 PM PDT

I'm in the process of starting my own retail and distribution company. I will be importing the hand sanitizer that I look to sell from Asia. It will be coming in through sea. I was wondering if anyone knows what certificates or permits I will need in order to receive such a large import of hand sanitizer? Or if anyone knows who I can contact in order to find out. I've called the sea port through which it will come in and I've yet to receive any response from them. I've also tried contacting the FDA but to no avail. Which has made me kinda antsy. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Anyone living in office space?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:02 PM PDT

I work a day job and run my business in my moms basement. Not enough room and constant fights. Found some cheap office space. Since I work on my day job during the day, I will be remote only some days when this whole pandemic is over. So majority of the time I will be working on my business throughout the night like till 12am, 4am even. I know there are zoning law issues, but as long as I'm working. They can't stop me right?

If they see my car and knock and I don't answer, will they barge in? I caught you sleeping in your office space! You are arrested for violating zoning laws!

    Patent confusion

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:13 PM PDT

I just found a patent for something very similar to my "invention". Patent was 1995-2015 and it says it expired. Does this mean I can apply for the patent or I can just make my product without being sued for something similar?

Any tips for tiered pricing on new service?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:00 PM PDT

I'm planning a project right now that involves a newsletter and a small database service. I'm likely going to use a combination of Substack and a low code database app (airtable, memberful, etc.)

I have a few open ended pricing questions and I'm curious what your experiences are.

Do you think it's better to start with a paid option? Or would be it better to grow an audience with everything free and then introduce a paywall?

Does tiered pricing make things too complex or does it make it more accessible? For instance, I could sell the service and have a free newsletter, lead gen with the service and have a paid newsletter, or have a biweekly free edition + paid weekly edition + super premium access to the service.

Do you think it's better to grow the list with a cheap price or focus on finding fewer people who can pay more?

    Thanks!

How do you know when to pay for advice/mentorship when everybody is trying to sell you their advice/mentorship?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:49 PM PDT

E.g. you need financial basic knowledge to device who could financially advice you. Even though many people say you should pay for financial advice, this doesn't seem to be worth it if you make less than $250k, then just go for Vanguard ETF's for investments and save your money.

I'd like to start a SaaS/Tech start-up in the future. I'm open to paying sometimes for advice, but how do you know who you should pay?

People are VERY UNEQUAL, but you cannot recognize who is better, without having some of the skills yourself.

Did you benefit from paying for advice and mentorship? Any good strategies how to find good advice and mentors?

First time Entrepreneur that needs orientation: while my team of devs builds MVP I am tempted to do a coding bootcamp. Should I?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:02 PM PDT

Hi strangers! Long story short: I hired a couple of devs and while they build the MVP for an app I would like to do a coding bootcamp. The dev team is not working on this full time and we expect to have the MVP in 10- 12 weeks. In the meantime I, the main sponsor of the project, am wondering whether to do a coding bootcamp or not. As the team is on a different time zone and I'm not a coder, obviously, I imagine that I will have some time to spare.

Do you think this is a good idea? if not what can I do while the team builds the MVP? ( we already have business plan, UI wireframes, etc.)

    Thanks!

Edit: thank you all for giving me your opinions, every one of them gave me a bunch of things to think through, this community rocks!

Help us with some of your name ideas, drop them in the comments. Thanks

Helpful guidance in how to improve a hobby blog to become more serious?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:41 PM PDT

It's still a hobby project and the main focus for me is to keep getting content out there for the interested reader and to create a reader base. Is that a good starting point or should i do a 180?

I don't understand how TikTok got popular.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:18 PM PDT

If my friend showed up one day and told me he has a billion-dollar idea that is basically an Instagram ripoff but only with videos. I would have laughed at him.

I don't understand why TikTok is famous because you can literally do the same thing on Instagram.

I have a few questions regarding this.

What did they do to get kids to use their app as opposed to Instagram?

Do people on it make money?

Things to do on TikTok seems very limited compared to Instagram.

People on TikTok seem to have more followers than on Instagram. Why?

It seems really interesting that it became the number one downloaded app.
