How do I navigate finding health insurance?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:39 PM PDT

I will be 26 in September, but my mother just got laid off due to corona so I need to find insurance sooner. I have her insurance until July, but I'm not completely sure how that's all going to pan out. I'm just very overwhelmed by it all.

I have Bipolar 2 so, primarily, I will be needing coverage for the psychiatrist, a therapist, electroconvulsive therapy treatments, and my many medications. I live in Wisconsin and am working PRN (as needed) so I'm not making much money at all. A friend mentioned Medicare but I'm not sure I'll qualify or if I'll get kicked off when I find a more full time job.

I'm so lost regarding it all and am not sure where to start.

Car insurance for first time driver age 30

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:25 AM PDT

[U.S. Ohio] Well I know it'll be high. How do I get a plan I can afford ? Will it help a lot if it's a cheaper car like I bought it for 7,000 dollars and own it completely? Rather than having a 30,000 car I'm paying on? My driving record is zero first license!

After cancer, returning to work problem

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:05 AM PDT

I was on long term disability with Lincoln Financial. It looked like a job position at my work was opening up, so I got cleared from my doctor on March 7th to come back to work. It ended up falling through and now there is a pause on hiring because of the virus and I'm not getting my disability anymore. Does anyone know if there is a difference between being cleared to work and getting a job position? Is there a way to get my disability back from Lincoln Financial? Thanks

Edit: I live in South California.

    Drug test for auto insurance?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:55 PM PDT

Sorry not really sure where to start, but a friend of mine says they get hair tested for drugs every month for car insurance because she was in an accident, and I'm just really confused if this is true because she keeps switching the story and I doubt an insurance company would do all this after paying out the settlement.

So what I know is that a little under a year ago she totaled her car in a non drug related crash.

Her car insurance fully reimbursed her for the amount it was worth months ago.

But apparently they drug test her with a hair test every month or so, and

She has already failed like 3 of them but says she still needs to take them?

I'm sorry I just don't buy her story it makes no sense but she insisted that it's her car insurance doing this, and I've never heard of a car insurance being able to, or just doing this? Could this be possible?

Would I qualify for Medicaid (confused about household size)?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 11:47 PM PDT

I tried to research if I can apply for Medicaid, but it confuses me, mainly regarding who to include in household size calculations. I will provide as much info as I can think of.

I recently moved to Texas about 9 months ago to be with my girlfriend. I am a 20 year old full-time student, and have a part-time job which makes about $800/month. I live with 6 other non-relatives (my girlfriend, her parents, and their 3 other children who are dependents). The parents make over $100k a year combined. I don't plan on filing taxes, and I cannot be claimed as a dependent by anyone.

Do I include them for my household size, or just myself? Would I possibly qualify for Medicaid? Thanks!

Disability - what should I do next?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:00 PM PDT

Hi! A family member of mine had a pretty significant stroke a little over a month ago. He's been discharged from the hospital, and currently at a skilled nursing facility to get therapy. Based on his current condition, I'm not sure if he'll be able to work again. He hasn't been able to talk yet and can't walk because his right side is paralyzed. Based on that assumption, I'm trying to figure out what the best next steps are in terms of his income and health insurance. He is currently approved for FMLA and short term disability through his work and I plan to continue to ensure that his STD gets extended. He also has LTD through his work. He's getting health insurance right now through his work as well. I'm not sure at what point he will no longer be employed and coverage for any of the above may stop.

What should I be looking into for long term income and health plans? As I mentioned above, I plan on pushing to get his STD extended and utilize his LTD benefit if possible. Should I start looking into SSDI? I'm not sure he would qualify for SSI based on his assets. What about in terms of health coverage? From what I've read, Medicare would only be available to him after 2 years after he's been approved for SSDI. I've looked into Medicaid but I'm not sure if he qualifies right now either, but should we get him to a point where he is covered?

TIA for any help! I've been trying to read about all the different options and it's really confusing to me what the best option long term is.

Edit: I forgot to mention - I'm in the US - WA state. Also edit: He's fairly young - in his mid 40s - so a ways away from retirement age.

    Fender Bender Walmart Parking Lot

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:39 PM PDT

Listen, before I get started I just want to say I am completely clueless and know practically nothing about insurance. I have it, I pay it when it's due, and that's about it.

Long story short, got into a fender bender while nosing out of spot in Walmart. I don't think I was at fault, as she was driving in super close to my side and was going a bit fast and I barely nosed out, but whatever. my cars front bumper got hit at the perfect angle where it pretty much made my bumper dangle. I hit her car on her front wheel, scratched that up, and scratched a bit of her door. Not that much damage on her car. She pulled off and after trying to get her to calm down and stop yelling, we exchanged insurance and she got mine and she made a claim against me. I talked it over with my agent, and it will most likely be my fault, but they are trying to see if they can work it down to be partial fault for us both. Let's say hypothetically, after the insurance companies take a look at it and say it was my fault. Let's also assume the damages to her are a couple hundred bucks. Would I be able to at that point pay out of my own pocket instead of my insurance paying it so my rates won't go up, or am I just kinda fucked here. Again, I don't know much about insurance, so if this is a stupid question I apologise.

More info, I only have liability insurance and no coverage for damage to my own car, as it is old and cheap to replace(1994 Honda Accord. Had to get a new bumper and front light and it only cost me like 100 bucks.

Edit- I am in California, Escondido, San Diego to be exact

Insurance premiums going up over 50% after purchasing a brand new vehicle after trading in the same new vehicle I purchased two years ago.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:29 PM PDT

I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. I've been with Progressive insurance for several years now, and in 2018 I purchased a new Honda Accord Sport. My rates were approximately $97 over the past year. Last week I traded up for a brand new 2020 Honda Accord Sport, same model and everything. The only changes I made were for comprehensive glass, and I took off gap coverage since I bundled it into my new loan. I did it because my credit is significantly better and dropped my monthly payments a lot, with a better warranty, but the 2020 model is virtually the same as the 2018 and I haven't had any accidents, nor have I even been pulled over in the previous 6 month cycle, yet my new rate is quoted at $156 per month? This seems ridiculous to me and I'm just curious if anyone has a reasonable explanation. I'm located in Minnesota.

Child hurt at school, school denies any liability

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:21 AM PDT

I have a question I hope you all can help me navigate. I have a son that was injured during class. He was in a metal working class and a piece of metal pipe fell of a shelf about 676-7 feet in the air and landed on his head. He ended up with a moderate concussion and I ended up with about $1200 in medical bills. I worked with the school to get their liability insurance, and they stated they don't have liability insurance, rather a different insurance that requires negligence on the schools behalf in order to pay out. They did an "investigation" and determined there was no negligence. So, how does a school differ from a residence in this case? If someone came to my house and was injured like that, my insurance would surely get involved. What are my options? With the COVID shutdowns, the schools are all closed now and I am unable to escalate this. Am I really stuck with this bill?

Edit - Forgot to put location. St. Croix county in WI.

Lot of car accidents in front of house

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:11 PM PDT

I live in upstate NY on a busy street. I witness maybe one car accident a month (rear end) in front of my house because of the traffic light 4 houses down. Simply inattentive drivers. Can't imagine how many happen when I'm not looking.

When the police are looking for an address for their report, I don't want them putting my house number down as place of occurrence. Should I hide or remove the numbers off my house? I don't want it affecting my car insurance or home owners insurance if my house number is becoming a common theme on police reports. Or is that not how insurance works?

Had a car accident but found out afterwards I had. No insurance coverage. What to do..

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:17 PM PDT

I had a car accident where I rear ended someone. Damage appears to be cosmetic only to the bumper. Police were called. A police report was taken. I log online and find out my policy was cancelled due to non payment. My insurance company won't reinstate my policy either... They won't budge at all. It's my fault since I lost my job bc of the epidemic we're in and I somehow missed the payment. Yet, the claims department has called and emailed about a claim filed by the other party.
I just got coverage with a new insurance company but obviously, that doesn't help me with the accident I had.

What can I do? What should I do? Thank you in advance for your advice.

Accident occurred in California and I'm a resident here too.

TLDR - I had an accident, found out I wasn't actually covered at the time and unsure what to do now.

    Life insurance - help needed

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:44 PM PDT

My stepdad was killed in an accident at home. He had been paying life insurance for the past 20 years. In November he missed a payment, and in January received a final notice and needed to reinstate it. He never missed a payment previous to this. In January was stressful family stuff and he just forgot. Is there anything that can be done to receive the life insurance? Even partial of it? We would pay for lapsed time, anything at all. Any suggestions appreciated

CA- Why does cashing property damage check not bar future recovery

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:32 PM PDT

Someone asked me this recently and I honestly don't know the answer. I know that there is a general rule that if you accept a check and cash it, that creates a contract that is enforceable (been a while since law school so I forget the actual name).

But I also know that issuing an initial PD/MD check and then issuing further supplements is standard.

I asked around a little but the only answer I was able to get was "that is just the way it is." Was wondering if anyone had the actual legal reasoning for WHY that is the way it is

Will I lose my coverage if I report my address to the DES?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:27 PM PDT

So I'm on free state health insurance because I have a poor-paying part-time job and I've been living with my parents for a small rent fee. I've since moved in with my partner (temporarily, they just don't want to be alone during quarantine) and the apartment complex they live in is very adamant about there being no unauthorized people living there. We saw another tenant get kicked out for this, so we decided to sign me onto the lease to keep it safe. (Yes I know nobody can get evicted right now, I just wanted to not have to worry about it and put my partner in bad standing with their landlord.)

I'm scared of reporting the change of address to the DES because I'm concerned that they will decide that I can't stay on the insurance I've been on because I live in a new place and don't pay rent. Will the DES somehow find out that my name is on someone's lease and kick me off of my insurance? Do I even need to report this information at all if it isn't a big deal?

This probably sounds really dumb, but I've built up a relationship with my doctor, psychiatrist, and therapist and I don't think I can handle having to do all of that over again or possibly having to pay for insurance / lose mental health coverage.

I'm on United Healthcare / AHCCCS in Arizona if that helps.

[CA] moved to Oregon, tried for weeks to cancel my insurance to no avail

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:39 PM PDT

I spent over an hour on hold with a rep a couple of weeks ago only to be told she couldn't help me due to high call volumes and I needed to cancel online. Welp, no, within coveredca portal I was given no option to cancel my insurance nor was that option there in my Blue Shield portal. This insurance can't even be used outside of California so I haven't used it since late feb when I moved.

I called again today, on hold for over an hour to be told I was missing a piece of authenticating information so they couldn't cancel it.

Now I've reached out to my insurance agent who they say hopefully can help me cancel it.

The problem is now I'm going to owe an additional $500 in premiums because this was such an undertaking and took so long. Do I have any recourse here? I don't even live in the state where I can actually use the insurance and it shouldn't have been this challenging. I know things are hard with COVID-19 and call volumes are high but I am really frustrated.

Edit: and please don't tell me I should have dealt with this sooner. In the middle of moving I was rear ended and have whiplash. I have been in treatment since then. Just as that was starting to rebound and I was slowly getting settled in Oregon, the pandemic hit. As someone with chronic conditions, this added quite a load of additional stress and fear to my daily life.

Just licensed as an all-lines adjuster, should I acquire licenses for other states to look more attractive to employers?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:22 PM PDT

Employers probably pay for additional licenses, but it would make me stand out I would think, plus they save the money.

I'm licensed in Florida, wondering what other prominent states should I get a license in?

It costs about $50-$75 in application fees, so I'll start with 5 states.

Am I being proactive or retarded?

    Thanks all

I was told that I retained access to the funds in my universal life insurance policy, but that's not true.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:13 PM PDT

About 4 years ago, I was sold a $750k universal flex life insurance policy as a supplemental retirement policy in Florida. I received misinformation about several things, but the main issue is that I was told that I retained access to the funds. I've recently learned that is untrue.

I emailed the insurance agent before the second premium payment to ensure that I thoroughly understood the policy, as the numbers appeared different than expected. He confirmed by email that I had tax-free access to the money at any time.

In reality, I currently only have access to the surrender value (about 6-7% of the deposited amount). When I spoke with the agent back in March, he initially denied sending the email, then said he was only referring to the surrender value.

I contacted the issuing company and was told that my best option was changing the policy to a lowered face value/$0 premium. According to an illustration, that would allow me to withdraw the deposited fund amount in about 16 years at current interest rates.

I believe I've exhausted my options, as I've contacted the company the agent worked for, the company that issued the policy, and the state's division of consumer services. (Florida does not have a standalone insurance commission.) The only thing that resulted was the issuing company removing the agent's name from the policy without being asked.

Is it worth pursuing this in any other way, or would it be better to accept the possibility of receiving the funds (~18k) back in ~16 years? And would I actually be likely to receive the funds back (or a decent portion) if I waited the 16 years? I was laid off due to COVID, so I would probably only feel comfortable pursuing legal assistance if there was a contingent agreement. I really appreciate your advice!

Will getting treatment for alcoholism make my dad lose life insurance?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:45 PM PDT

    Hello!

My dad is 61 and has been struggling with very serious alcoholism but doesn't want to get medical treatment because he says he will lose his life insurance. Is this the case? If he goes to the hospital for assisted alcohol detox or any other treatment would he lose life insurance because of this? He has never told any healthcare professionals of his alcohol use so it does not currently affect his life insurance at all. He lives in Michigan.

Is Negligence required to subrogate on a liability claim that caused property damage?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:15 AM PDT

I recently suffered water damage to a large number of belongings in my closet that was due to a neighbor's water heater either breaking, flooding, backing up, or something similar. I recorded my conversation with my apartment complex maintenance department and they confirmed it was flooding due to the neighbor's water heater.

I spoke to my claim adjuster and they mentioned that they want to pursue a property damage claim under my policy rather than subrogate for a liability claim against the tenant/apartment complex. They said this because they are not able to prove negligence of the complex or tenant, specifically that the tenant/complex could say it was an "act of God."

However, does it matter how the water heater broke/flooded or possibly is potentially defective (as the maintenance team suggested on my recorded statement)? It wasn't my water heater, it did not involve my apartment, it was not from a weather event, so how could this be anything other than someone else's fault? How can a water heater backup/break/flood be an "act of God"?

Beneficial to have household members with good driving record, credit, and education background on policy?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:20 PM PDT

    We live in Florida.

When I was obtaining car insurance through a local agency, I was told if I include my son and his wife it would decrease my premium as they have better driving records and credit than I do and that we would get a discount as they are college graduates. Is this true or is it better for them to not be on my policy?

We are all living together but they do not drive my vehicles.

Health Insurance is only paying 1/4 of pre-approved Surgery...

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:43 AM PDT

Had this surgery that was pre-approved completed. After the surgery was done, insurance denied paying for it because of it "The request for authorization we needed from your health care provider to make a decisions wasn't sent within the required time frame" The hospital tried to submit them documentation, but for whatever reason, months go by and they never re-submit the documents even with me calling me and asking.

I get a denial letter from the insurance company, which ultimately has me filing a complaint with the Department of Commerce & Insurance with Tennessee. After investigation the legal department of the insurance company replies and states the denial is due to the surgery "falling outside of the authorized date range," yet they are willing to pay $45K.

I would have never gotten this surgery if it wasn't pre-approved, and having to be on the hook for 150K.

What options do I have due to what seems like an administrator error?

    Dental Insurance and Crowns

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:27 PM PDT

    Hello,

I just have a general question about dental insurance and crown replacement coverage. I live in NY. I know that on most dental insurance plans, crown replacements are covered (or partially covered) once every 5 years. But, is this only if you stay on the same insurance plan? If I were to switch insurance plans, would insurance cover the crown replacement before 5 years?
