Finally making some money! Sales and Selling

    Finally making some money!

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:34 AM PDT

I'm new to sales, have been in my current job for six months with only one sale that honestly wasn't even mine, just a bone my boss threw me. My wife suggested maybe I'm just not very good at sales.

Now, in the last two weeks since the crisis began, I have closed four deals that have netted me $12k in commissions!

Two deals almost didn't go through but I worked my tail off to see them to the finish line. Now I'm getting calls from people looking to score a deal and I'm certainly trying to hook them up.

I make a base of $48k so if I can keep it up I'm expecting to have a good year, possibly the most money I've ever ever made, which was $125k in my previous non-sales job.

Not happy about the crisis by any means but it feels great to finally be banking some decent money.

I’m surprisingly having my best ever month so far!

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 03:39 AM PDT

I work in recruitment advertising sales and the jobs market has collapsed, yet I've hit target already and I have no idea how... all of my colleagues are struggling yet somehow I've managed to do well out of the current situation. Only shame is that our commission is capped at 100% so I can't earn anymore comms. Feels good to be doing well when I may not have a job in a months time.

How to be more aggressive over cold calls

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:49 AM PDT

    Hi r/sales,

I am in b2b sales, doing commerical insurance for property & casualty. So, I sell things like worker's compensation, general liability, business auto, umbrella, etc. and I cross-sell employee benefits. I am looking for advice about being more aggressive during cold calls. I am having trouble running into objections and folding too easily. I do not mind making the calls and dials, but I want to be better. Any advice or tips would be helpful.

    Made a sale today

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 06:02 PM PDT

I'm on a newly formed team after being here for a few years and made our first sale today, at $30k. It's our minimum buy-in but a deal is a deal.

This whole situation is going to end at some point and we can be ready for when that next shoe drops if we can keep getting a little hustle out the door - in the meantime, there are still people buying right now.

    College Graduate Advice

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:50 AM PDT

    Hey r/sales,

I will be graduating from college in late May. I have a decently strong resume, meaning; I have held a job since I was 15, was a student athlete, completed an internship, have remained heavily involved on campus, and won a Business Award. With all of this being said I still cannot seem to land a job, I am unsure if it is me or the Covid-19 hiring freeze. I have been looking for about two months now in all different kinds of industries but a sales related job is my goal. Do you all have any advice on where or how to look? It is a difficult time for everyone right now, I was hoping there was some sort of silver lining to this situation.

How many of you guys are keeping things business as usual Vs adapting your pitch to COVID-19?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 07:57 AM PDT

After much internal debate, and a few Reddit posts, I decided to keep things business as usual in terms of my pitch, but be a bit softer in my approach and in addressing objections.

For example, my pitch still follows: Intro ==> Social validation ==> Value prop ==> Ask a question to engage ==> Go for meeting.

That being said, I now ask if this is a good time, acknowledging that these are very busy times given everything that's happening. I'm also less aggressive in dealing with objections. I'll still deal with them once, but usually don't push too hard. If I hear a second objection after I deal with the first, or if they continue with the same objection, I usually offer to call at a later date when things have settled down.

I think's it's important to show that you are still open for business, and to show what value you bring. At the same time, I think it's equally important to show empathy and understanding of the current environment.

What about you guys, how have you altered your appraoch?

    Anybody here in channel sales?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 11:22 AM PDT

I work at a tech company on the channel sales side. Naturally, the channel side of sales is much smaller than direct sales when it comes to all of sales, but I'd like to know if there's any people on this sub who work the channel like me. Would love to know if there's any favorite resources/tools/articles you have that would help our roles.

    Sell something new.

It's 2020, the product you sell vanishes from the market and you're forced to find something new to sell.

What are you now selling and why?

I just had a customer endorse me for "memes" on Linkedin

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:35 AM PDT

I totally forgot that you could just endorse for random bullshit years ago - when i was a BDR me and my buddies used to do this all the time.

We are reconnecting for the first time in a month or so in about an hour - not sure if this is going to be a rapport builder or him thinking I'm an ass-clown. Possibly both.

I've already felt like I've been living in the twilight zone for the last month and this was the icing on the cake.

Need motivation to pick up the phone

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 07:27 AM PDT

Hey guys! I would love to get some advice. I'm working for a B2B agency as a SDR for the last 6 months. I took the job as a way to keep myself afloat until I found a job in my field but ended up staying longer than I expected. I've always been good at sales, and I love the company but I'm getting burned out by the role.

100% of my job description is cold-calling businesses to sell advertising in a fairly saturated field. It's transactional sales with a very short cycle.

I've consistently been a top performer on my team, but have never come close to hitting the OTE I was given when I accepted the position. Since Covid-19 destroyed both my sales funnel, and my job prospects, at this point the only way out is to work harder and make it through this.

What are some tips that have helped you stay motivated to keep picking up the phone?

Resources to learn better follow ups?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 01:20 AM PDT

I really like Fanatical Prospecting, and using the lines and assimilating them to my own pitch. Powerful things that I never thought about in the mid section of that book.

But, I would like to hear more on the phase between first call/email and getting to a meeting. The 4-6 times I am following up with them to get to that next step. How can I improve this?

I'm selling marketing opportunities in a niche market to manufacturers.

Let's say I use the hook, bridge, relate, ask that Jeb mentioned. But I don't think it's right to just send that same message over and over, no? And it seems like I can do better than "Charles, did you see the above email?" or "Again, I'd love the opportunity to speak more on your XYZ product, and see if we're a potential good fit".

Well, it has finally happened. I work for a digital advertising agency and most of the sales staff has been furloughed for 3 months. I knew it was coming. I'm happy that it was a complete layoff. Good luck to everyone else out there still trying to sell.

Top salesman to worst in company! Has anyone learnt to enjoy and job they hate or is it a waste of time?!Advice needed

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 08:34 AM PDT

    Good evening all,

Im in need of a bit of advice from anyone in sales.

I was a top salesman in a company for a year and a half in a team of 15. Although it's not a huge team I was with some very experienced sales people and In previous roles I've always done really well.

I decided to move from that field into a different type of sales due to the atmosphere being terrible. I've been with a new company for a year now.. I've had the worst figures in a team of 19 since I've joined and a lot of people only had a month or two more experience than me. The atmosphere in the new place is great however the type of sale Is completely different... with 4 years of sales It's always been in roles where I'm required to build a rapport however with this role it's all about compliance so you have to ask a set number of things otherwise you will fail and be fined... it's very hard to build rapport in a conversation where you have to make sure you ask 25 bits of information... too me the conversation just doesn't seem natural and im almost being forced to read from a script. I've always worked hard but for the last 4 months I just can't get that energy to work hard and I feel I'm holding myself back because I can't get the motivation.

The other factors are; the money they told me in the interview is far less than what I was told... with commission it's only £25k!!!!a year.. this is over half what I was getting paid previous.. so money isn't a driving factor with this job... it's in life insurance so it's a morbid subject however this job does lead into other avenues..

My question is: has anyone joined a job they hate for the first year and learnt to enjoy it with more experience or has it been a waste of time?

    Recruiting and Selling

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 08:25 AM PDT

I'm a sales rep (Package stores no bars or restaurants) for a liquor distributor and we are one of the few business that have been great thankfully. Recently due to the coronavirus they have pulled all sales reps off the road and we have to call all of our customers, which is fine with me as my commute to my first account is over an hour.

When I first graduated I was a recruiter at an agency in my home town and after I left I stayed friendly with a lot of those guys including the owner. We had a conversation when this all happened and now I'm recruiting for them on the side and I have to say that I absolutely love it. I also feel that now that I've been in sales for 10 years I'm much better at it.

My question is do any of you guys have a "side hustle" selling/recruiting while still having you full time job?

    Stay safe!

Are you prepared for "no shaking hands ever again?" Because I'm not sure if I am.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 08:21 AM PDT

As someone who has built his entire career around shaking hands to start into my sales conversion, I have no idea how to handle this.

Do you guys have a similar concern? Or is this not an issue (speaking to those that rely on in person cold calling and relationship building)?

I just closed the biggest deal of my entire life!

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 07:35 AM PDT

JK I got laid off. But seriously y'all, a lot of us are laid off right now, so could you chill on the bragging just until the pandemic is over and we all go back to work? It's nice to hear that y'all are doing well though but a lot of us are in real economic desperation right now. The unemployment checks haven't even begun for most of us because the unemployment office phone lines are overwhelmed and the websites keep crashing.
