The lawsuit accuses Burr of violating the STOCK Act, a 2012 law that bans members of Congress from profiting from non-public information they learn on the job. Burr was one of just three senators to vote against the law.

Tomorrow will be ugly: jobless claims

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 05:49 PM PDT

First jobless data after nationwide shutdown. I'm thinking maybe it's gonnabe a number none of us have ever seen before or even maybe one for the history books. Perhaps a million?

Might erase today and yesterday's rallies.

We're living in times kids in the future will study in history books and economics class in universities. Millennials would be called the greatest generation who invented social media and social distancing and survived a pandemic 🤣

Comparing major Recessions of the Past 100 years.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Hello r/StockMarket! I'm new here (and to the stock market). I've been learning since November, and it's been a wild ride. During the day I am a data analyst so I thought I would share some graphs that I made.

    Plotly Chart : https://plotly.com/~grabear/25.embed

A few weeks back, someone posted a graph of the 2020 recession compared to other recessions in the past 100 years. It compared the daily percentage changes (from the recent high) over 100 days for each recession period. More recently u/bigbear0083 made a post "History of S&P 500 Bear Markets since 1929". I wanted to see what this looked like for a longer span of time, so I made an interactive chart using plotly. You can zoom in and out, and each data-point has a tooltip. You can click on the "Compare data on hover" to see the tooltips for each line that represents a recession period.

I used an R package to download the data, which ended up being ^GSPC because the package could only download so far back for certain stocks. If you guys have a good source for better data, or suggestions or requests, I can change the graph and update my post. (If you want more data on the tooltips let me know.)

Edit: Best viewed on a home computer. It's hard to manipulate the graph on a smart phone.

    Unemployment Rate Dip

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 06:31 AM PDT

Just looking for opinions - but if theres over 300k in this group alone, and surely other large groups related to recession/stocks etc. ... and if we're all counting on seeing the dip on Thursday after unemployment rate, are we expecting that the average investor isn't aware of the unemployment problem?

Just curious as if there really will be a sell off. I agree that the rally yesterday was based off of hope that the bill would pass, but todays will surely rise as there has "been a deal" - vague as hell words too ... I also agree with the "buy the rumor, sell the news" tactic. However, NY is over 25k alone ... these virus numbers aren't even in play anymore. Could it even be that there are just a lot of hungry people waiting for the dip/bottom, that the FOMO itself is taking over the market. The amateur investor would typically buy when they see the market going up. However, we are still at a low and so many attractive companies are at an all time low - I truly wonder how long this opportunity will last ... (fomo myself for not buying in Wednesday).

I dont trust the government in a time like this and its wild that Americans are eating out the palm of their hands. How it landed at $2 Trillion ... that's just a huge number right there and they're throwing it out too quickly (imo). So what the hell is going on behind the smoke and mirrors!

What are your heavily undervalued positions to watch?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 07:02 AM PDT

Yesterday I sold everything to get back into cash because I was only down about 15% from ATHs. Put in a large limit purchase on SPY pre-market and immediately sold at open. Will likely try to continue this trend of buying panic drops and selling off rallies, but I do want to pick up long-term positions in some stronger stocks.

I'm following NVDA, BAM, MA. We know yesterday wasn't the start of a V, but I think there are a lot of stocks undervalued that are worth getting into at the end of this week. What are you guys thinking? Is it worth the risk to get back in now, or is everything going sideways and down for the foreseeable future?

Senior Housings stocks see 40% fall as move-ins are expected to decline

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 04:30 AM PDT

New Senior Group announced they had 2 communities with confirmed COVID-19 cases. Considering seniors would prefer to live independently now, move-ins will certainly decline. As of now, these stocks have fallen 40%.

History will repeat itself. Albeit, at warp speed. We have another 30-50% drop to go. You have been warned.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 10:47 AM PDT

Great depression 90% drop Great recession 60% drop We are at 30%. Remember, this is globally economically devestating. The market had coniptions when little old Greece couldn't make payments. Now it's going to be all of them. The entire US needs to be in lockdown. It's not. And still no investment in testing! Without rapid testing life does not come back to normal.

Would someone be able to explain why Ford is with so little, Honda is hanging in there and yet Toyota is worth so much money?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 02:34 PM PDT

I was watching the news. I saw how low Ford's value is so than I googled Honda and than Toyota. Why is Toyota worth so much more than the other two? In my opinion the three of them make equally mediocre cars.

How can I have a stock market competition with friends but...

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 07:16 PM PDT

We dont want everyone just picking super risky investments. We want to have some measure so people have to be somewhat risk adverse. Basically, everyone can pick stocks but combined all their stocks have to be a certain risk level.

    How do we do that?

What to buy? Stocks or Index Funds?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 10:00 AM PDT

I've been planning on investing for some time, and I have a Roth IRA set up with fidelity. I know I should start investing soon. Others seem to think the market will bottom out soon, but it is going up at least temporarily for now. Should I invest in index funds like I've planned on? Or, stocks? Please give me advice.

Things to look for when predicting US Natur Gas Fund stock?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 05:28 PM PDT

I'm very interested in DGAZ and UGAZ because people I know have made thousands trading them, but I'm unsure of what to look for when trying to predict where the Natural Gas Fund stock (UNG) will rise or fall. Honestly, I don't even know what the natural gas fund is, or what it's based off of. Any tips on what kinda stuff influences UNG price or what to watch exactly? Thank you guys.

Anyone taking a look at LK ahead of their QTR earnings ?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 01:26 PM PDT

Melvin Capital discloses a stake of 5.2% stake in the coffee chain (vs 3.51%). - SA

Being a holder of LK since it's IPO, I've seen the downs/ups, but I'm surprised to see them weather the COVID storm so strongly. It might be they were ahead of the "social distancing" — from a restaurant perspective.

Their business model is not mobile first, it's mobile only. From the beginning, they opened micro stores, that didn't even have tables.

Just interesting to hear if anyone is bull on them ahead of the Q4 earnings call. Doesn't change my long on them. - Me

    Best long term investments

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 10:58 AM PDT

I recently inherited a decent sum of money and during these great sales in the market I am looking to invest a good portion of it for the long run. I was thinking things like Visa, Amazon, Apple, and maybe AT&T but I want to be smart about it so let me know if I'm being a dumbass or if these are smart and maybe some other options

Edit: I'm going to wait a bit since I'm pretty sure we haven't hit the bottom yet

What do you look for? Volatility and News I guess? I'm a learner and trying to learn TA while trying to wrap my head around. Lawmakers agree to $2 trillion stimulus early morning

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 10:45 PM PDT

Senior lawmakers and members of the Trump administration early Wednesday came to an agreement on a massive stimulus measure to try to keep Americans whole as the economy shuts down due to the coronavirus.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are done. We have a deal," White House aide Eric Ueland announced at the Capitol just after midnight.

White House officials said the measure will cost about $2 trillion.

Negotiators worked all day, with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and incoming White House chief of staff Mark Meadows shuttling between meetings with Republicans and then Democrats.

The package includes direct deposits for all Americans, $367 billion for loans to small businesses and an unprecedented program that will allocate $500 billion to the Treasury Department. Some of that money will be used to guarantee a Federal Reserve loan program for small and medium-size businesses. Larrry Kudlow, director of the White House's National Economic Council, said the funds could be leveraged into $4 trillion of lending through the Fed.

Most adults would receive direct payments of $1,200, while children would see $500 checks. Hospitals would receive some $150 billion under the deal and small businesses would get $367 billion in aid.

Does the US gov have $2 trillion to spend on stimulus?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 10:37 AM PDT

I don't have enough basic knowledge to understand all this. Based on Fed's internal summary it looks like the US should file backrupcy (liability > asset) Can someone who actually know how to interpret this help me understand what's going on with our reserve, can the Federal reserve afford this stimulus, and how? More importantly, if all major (and some small) businesses gets a cut (best case scenario), is this close to enough to hold them for a few months? Thanks!

    Sell tonight, buy on Monday

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 03:30 AM PDT

Seems like what most people here plan on doing? If unemployment numbers are lower than expected then the climb may continue but that's really the only scenario where a big decline isn't coming, isn't it? Or why else might the climb continue? Because Trump headlines that he wants to re-open Murica will overshadow news about numbers of infected etc?

    How low could we go?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 05:41 AM PDT

Just wanting to gauge everyone's opinions. The rally yesterday felt like BS to me. We haven't even gotten a full preview into the effects of this shutdown. I had already rearranged to mostly bonds early on, and am thinking the Dow will go lower than $18k... what do you guys think?
