Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:05 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

Question about my social media startup

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:07 PM PST

    Hey everyone.

I'm a software developer and have created a fully functional video streaming web application social media platform within the past seven months. I have a monetization strategy and everything, but there is one slight problem.

I'm not sure how to handle content monitoring. Sure, there is a report/flag system for users, but there is still a limbo period while potentially illegal or ToS-violating content is on my web servers before it can be manually verified.

Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Thanks in advance.

What are some pros and cons of hiring interns?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:22 AM PST

I am planning to hire a few interns for my startup. I just wanted to get some suggestions or precautions to take before hiring them, and what work quality should I expect from them?

Also, do you think it would be a good idea to hire the intern remotely?

Start-up I work at failed and closing. Struggling to find a job.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:46 PM PST

    Location: UK

I work in a health tech direct to consumer start up. Essentially an online pharmacy that delivers generic medicines branded as our own and we failed. I grew the operations from ground up; developed manufacturing, grew fulfillment operations to 200+ orders a day, business analysis, authored the blog, customer support etc. Got stuck in in all parts of the business. Got at least some experience in it all. 1 year later (today) it's shutting down. CAC too high and LTV too low. Founders closing the business. I loved creating a service which many of our subscription customers loved and were also gutted its closing.

I'm being layed off now and I've been trying to apply for jobs for the past 3 months and I get no response as to why. I don't think employers see my passion and hunger to learn and join a product team even as an analyst or junior role. Pay does not matter to me at all, I couldn't care less if I was earning £25k. What matters is a place where I can learn and grow.

My education background is Masters in Pharmacy (2017) from one of the best pharmacy schools and also one of the best universities in the world (in London). I am 25.

My career aspiration looks like this: Now = Junior Analyst role. 3 years = junior product manager. 5 years = product manager. 9 years = my own business.

    Any tips?

    Paying for market research?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:30 PM PST

Hey all! I have been considering starting a small business to provide market research specifically for start-ups. I hope to provide insights into potential market size, relevant mega-trends, opportunity hotspots, competition demographics, and more. As of right now, I am at an early exploratory phase, and so I'm reaching out to you all to see if it's even a service start-ups need and would be willing to pay for. So, would you pay for a service like this?

Validating my idea with a landing page

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:37 PM PST

So I'm trying to validate my idea with a landing page through having people sign up for email updates...I've got a cheap Wordpress site I'm working on.

    Questions are:

What are some "necessary" information I should include on the site?

Is it even worth finding some sort of freelancer to make it looks nice and clean?

What do you think makes a good landing page?

    High School Intern

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:08 PM PST

I'm a current high schooler (rising sophomore) and I'm really interested in business and finance. I'm curious as to whether any of you would even consider taking a high school intern, and how I might approach a situation (if it's even possible). I have a CS/math focus (perfect score on AP CS and Calc :) and I was looking for summer programs and there just wasn't much that I found interesting. If anyone's startup has taken or would consider taking on a high school intern, do you have any advice on how to find opportunities and reach out to people? I'm super curious to see what the options are.

LLC: Registered Agent options in NY?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:05 PM PST

I want to release a few phone app I've been working on as a side hustle and I want to start an LLC for protection first. I am hesitant to put my home address as the Registered Agent on file for privacy reasons -- are there any options that aren't expensive? Seems like most I find are $150 or more a year.

I just got offered for business partnership

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:56 AM PST

I own a small business in my country. Been working on it on the side since 2015. Early last year I quit my job to follow this passion and working on the growth. I run few other gigs to make money as well. So far I have not drawn any money from the manufacturering business.

Recently I worked with a guy for whitelabeling his products to distribute in to his country. He spoke to me about whst he had in his mind. That he wanted to know if I am interested in joining with him in his venture.

From what he said he wanted me to represent his brand in my country. (I am already established 5 years). Help on few things im good at like marketing, pop up stores, setting up a local store etc...

I told him that I wanted to see if this is possible as a business plan and let's put on paper what you have to offer. And also I am not that keen on having partners due to some bad experiences in the past (failed businesses). But I am open minded and let's talk about it.

I won't be making any promises, just wanted to see if this will be an opportunity for for me to do this fulltime in the future. Also this is the first time I met someone's doing the same thing as me. So our interests are similar. Just have different set of skill sets.

This would definitely would be a great opportunity for me to fill in certain gaps I have in the business. But I have to think of getting paid for what I do. I am already handling about 4 clients on the side while running this business to sustain my family.

    Thoughts?

Need Guidance on How To Enter the Mental Health Startup Scene

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:30 AM PST

    Hey Everyone,

I'm looking to build a product or service related to mental health, although I'll need help on getting started. As someone who has struggled with anxiety for years, I know how terrible depression can get and how it can make you not only tired, but get you to overthink the smallest of things. I just got out of an episode of OCD and I would never want anyone to feel how I did.

While I do have the coding background to build an app, I don't have much of a Psych background other than an Abnormal Psych class. That being said, I have always been interested in psychology, and would love to learn more.

I'm currently doing market research on apps/services used to counter anxiety/depression before coming up with an idea. Would you recommend either getting in contact with a psychologist or doctor to learn more about treatments for anxiety disorders, or is there a better step I can take?

    Thanks!

    SaaS subscription insurance

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:36 AM PST

Hey all, Our startup is doing a subscription cancellation "insurance" helping SaaS to upsell annual plans to their users by giving the user an option to cancel the subscription anytime and get a refund on the remaining.

We are looking to grow and change our G2M strategy from sale-oriented marketing to inbound self serve marketing but due to the nature of our startup, our pricing is varied and depending on SaaS pricing and cancelation rate.

I know startups that made the change from self serve to sales marketing but not the other way around. Does anyone here made such a change, and can elaborate a bit about the process?

Peer Support and Self Management Saturday’s - A Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:05 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.
