Teacher Loan Forgiveness: One Approved, One Denied? Student Loans

Teacher Loan Forgiveness: One Approved, One Denied?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:48 AM PST

So I had posted a while back on r/Teachers about applying to the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, and got to chat with a bunch of people about their experiences. I was a math teacher, so I have my eyes on the $17,500 prize.

I had about $4,200 through AES and about $26,300 through FedLoans. While there were some issues originally, I talked to both AES and FedLoans and they both said my application looked good, checked all the boxes, and that it would be passed on to the DOE.

This was in December. I was told it COULD take up to 6 months, but usually takes about 3. I got the notification from AES in January that all of my $4,200 with them was forgiven. Yay!

Now, I just got an email from FedLoans that my application was denied. I'm planning on calling on Monday morning, but did this happen to anyone else?

Direct consolidation default, so many questions

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:41 PM PST

Trying to help my brother-in-law figure out this crazy mess. Please be helpful, I realize how shameful his behavior is, and I pay my bills so I don't know how this all works.

BIL started college in 2006 and stopped around 2008 due to some issues. He had multiple Stafford loans (and maybe others) through Sallie Mae, eventually with Navient. He has never really earned much, $50-100 a week typically, sometimes more but then also going through long bouts of being unemployed. They used to call the house hounding him and eventually he ended up with two direct consolidation loans, also serviced by Navient (about 15k each, 30k total). I am unclear why there are two and not one direct consolidation loan. In any case - He never paid those either. I do his taxes each year and have been surprised that he actually got the refunds and it wasn't offset. This year it was finally offset, and no surprise, they took it all.

Looking at his Navient account the consolidation loan balances are zero and they say paid by the US Dept of Education in 2019. When We call the offset line then money was taken by Dept of Education so that makes sense. Not sure how relevant the tax part is other than to say where he is in this very long chain of events.

So, where is the balance now since it's not with Navient and is there any hope of making this right? I have read that federal loans never go away and they can even take from social security benefits when one gets older. If they never go away it seems there must be a way to get back on track. What does that look like for someone who makes well under the poverty level at 31 years old?

Can schools keep left over private loan funds?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:28 PM PST

So, I'm going to a private college and living off campus. The college is in a large city and has crippling tuition, along with crippling on-campus housing prices. Off-campus is less expensive, but only just. I had to take out a private loan and purposefully took out enough to help me cover housing costs along with tuition. My school is currently holding all the loan money and won't give any of the excess to me. There is supposed to be a process where you can request your private loan money back as an "advance".

I'm currently not registered for the next semester due to cost and general sleaziness on the school's part, so they're saying they aren't going to give me the excess money back until I'm registered again. When I told them I needed it for rent they basically shrugged it off and said there was nothing they could do.

I've searched online and can't find any similar circumstances so I guess I'm just wondering how legal and/or normal this is.

    private student loan question?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:52 AM PST

    Hello all,

I will be attending law school this fall and will be using student private loans. I will be getting my loans from Discover for law school.

Discover told me they will cover 100% of the costs to attend law school and it is up to the financial aid office to approve how much I borrow.

Can I take out a bit more to help pay for some of my current bills? I have a car that I pay for monthly and insurance and was wondering if this falls under "living expenses" or something.

    Student loan refinancing with rewards?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:09 PM PST

(x-post from /r/personalfinance) at the ripe old age of 34, I'm realizing I need to do that thing called saving. I don't have any credit card debt, and I now have a mortgage, so I'm starting off with refinancing my student loans. I researched around at the usual loan aggregator sites, but it seems like they all have the same offers. I got something in the mail from Lend-Grow, I've never heard of them before but it looks like a similar loan-finder, except they actually pay you rewards each month in the form of account credit. If this is real, it seems like the way to go. Has anyone used them before? I went to the site but it looks like it's not live yet.

Paying with a cash back credit card

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:37 AM PST

Are there any safe loopholes to paying off student debt with a cash back credit card? I pay off my balances every month (I have all cards on autopay) and just want to take advantage of making these large lump sum payments.

Confirming a loan is paid off

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:14 AM PST

Dumb question ahead. I have 6 separate loans, all federal direct. My last payment, I paid the exact balance that was left on one of the loans. After the payment cleared, there was still somehow $1.37 on that loan's balance. I assumed because of interest. Frustrated, I paid $2 to the remaining balance, not knowing if any more interest would accrue between the date I paid and when the payment posted.

The loan now shows a balance of ($.63) which I assume means -.$63, i.e. the overage of my payment. I just want to confirm that this single loan is paid off and can no longer accrue interest. Is there an easy way to do that? Thank you.

Edit - thanks all. I did not know that about 'loan payoff amount.' I looked around the site a bit more (this is Mohela) and now see a screen where that loan's "principle balance" shows "-0.63" and "Outstanding Interest" reads "0," so I'm hoping I'm now good. Will definitely still call them to confirm. Frustrating they're not open on the weekends.

    Nelnet Processing Payment

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:01 PM PST

This is my 1st time making a payment to Nelnet, using debit cards only, one was rejected and returned (American Express ) I made another payment using a Visa debit card and it has been processing for about 3 days now. How long does it usually take?

My payment was due on the 28th but because it's still processing I'm supposedly still in good standing

I called customer service and they either were just as clueless as I was or they said everything was fine on there end, even though I know for a fact my payment has yet to go through

I use both these cards to pay various bills this is the 1st I've had issues with paying anyone

So my question is how long does processing take? Have you ever mailed in a money order instead of paying online?

    Quick Clarification on Admin Forbearance?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:05 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I was supposed to start paying back my direct federal loan next week, but due to my low income as a new counselor and my eligibility for PSLF, I applied for an income-based plan. Two weeks ago I got a mesage from Nelnet accepted for the PAYE plan and saw that I'm Admin Forbearance until February of 2021.

    1. Should I go ahead and put a bit in monthly as I can, or just wait until I'm reassessed next year?
    2. Do they ever end Admin Forbearance early?
    3. Would payments in the meantime be PSLF eligble? I may end up leaving the nonprofit world before my 10 years is up, but I figured I may as well start with that plan since I'm doing income based and I qualify.

    Thanks for the help!

Is this illegal or a stupid thing to do?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:32 PM PST

Due to financial circumstances, I had to take out a private loan my freshman year and has been accruing interest ever since. Things have since changed and I no longer have to resort to any loans (or if I do, it is for a very little amount). I still receive offers from FASFA for unsubsidized and subsidized loans but never took them because I really did not need them. I am not sure if this is illegal or anything so that is why I am asking this here - what would happen if I accepted the subsidized loan, received the refund check, and then put it all towards the private loan I have? Are there any laws or anything from forbidding me from doing this? I figure it would be a nice thing to do so as to save my future self from unnecessary debt. It is essentially swapping debt for debt, but the subsidized loan would not accrue any interest during the period the private loan would.

I ask that you please be kind if this is as stupid question! I am on my own and am trying my best to learn this stuff. Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I am a Bulgarian/EU citizen. Have done an Academic Education Year with Scholarship in the USA in 2017-2018, therefore I have been in the UK for 2 years since. Though my family has been living in the UK for longer than that, will I be able to claim Student Loans?
