Need advice on path to startup world after university? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 10:58 AM PDT Hi, I've noticed successful entrepreneurs follow one of two paths. One may work in an industry for a number of years, identify problem, and then branch off to create a company that solves that problem. OR: They graduate from college, and shortly after, find a bunch of people to create a startup with. Not necessarily gunning for a specific industry per se. But sometimes these people become wildly successful. Ex. Elon Musk, Mark Cuban, Alexis Ohanian, Travis Kalanick.Etc. A lot of the times, the capital from their first startup allows them to pursue an industry they're truly passionate about, but wouldn't have been able to do before. What I don't get is how did those people that I listed above even find a business idea in the first place? Did they just network with people to find out which problems needed solving? I for one was thinking of going on path number 2. I was planning on becoming a developer after university (as I don't have programming skills, but do know that it may be necessary to get them), and eventually land onto something through networking or meeting new people. Is this naive? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Where/How to get industry data? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 12:50 PM PDT I'm trying to put together a pitch for a particular idea in a major industry that nobody is doing. How can I find data on that industry? Two examples: 1) I want to build a new patio heater nobody has ever built before. How can I find data on things like.... Heaters, patio heaters, propane sales, restaurants which use patio heaters, etc. 2) I want to start advertising in a way nobody else has done before. How can I find data on ad revenue or expenditures (overall, TV, mobile, print, etc) etc? Within certain geographic, digital, demographic, or other breakdowns? Is there a term for this kind of data? How can I find it?Googling is random and inconsistent, and the sources are usually not great to cite to. I don't mind paying for the data as long as it is affordable and reliable. What is a good book to read for team building? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:46 PM PDT I'm looking to build a team in Product Management for the company I work at. Curious to know what are some books people recommend reading for team building. Looking forward to some tips and good books to read on this. To give you some background about myself, I work in a tech startup in San Francisco. We are a team of ~20 people today and are looking to expand the size of the product team. [link] [comments] |

The database will be containing many recipes, ingredients, nutrients etc. Or is there any possiblity of using an existing database to use an input to my website service? Would be great if someone can help me out. [link] [comments] |
Is it stupid to start a marketplace business without funding? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:05 AM PDT Hi everyone, This year I started a project which consisted of creating a marketplace for musicians. Even though I have great selling points (much lower fees, multi-languages, personalization, ..), it just seems like it was stupid to start this kind of business after 5 months of non-stop coding (I validated the market first!). The problem is that I have limitations on my current payment provider (I'm using Stripe which seems like a hassle for my sellers, not to say, there is no possibility to pay with PayPal) and other Marketplace payment providers simply don't want to team up with a "fresh" marketplace of which I am sure much are started throughout the world but never see a point of positive ROI. Since there are legislations to be followed in Europe, I can't just wild-west it because no payment provider will approve me because as soon as they inspect my site and see that I'm a marketplace type site, they're pointing me to the fact that I can't manipulate buyers' money without being this big legal entity that ensures correct handling of fees. I'm just stuck. I worked really hard and I am happy with the result but it just seems like I have to shoot the dog because of these limitations I'm facing. What are you guys' thoughts on marketplaces? Love to start a discussion [link] [comments] |
Need guidance on how to interpret research on an idea Posted: 22 Mar 2020 10:20 AM PDT Hello, I recently started working on a new project that I thought had a lot of potential, and doing some research into similar businesses existing, I found the following One startup based out of the US, started in 2017/2018 and seems to be growing slowly. I have a few ideas on how I would improve upon their product. One startup in London, started in 2012 and went out of business in 2017. They seemed to have a lot of users however they don't exist anymore. One startup, started in 2008, out of business in 2011. One startup that started in 2011 and I'm not sure when they went out of business, pretty certain they don't exist anymore though. How do I interpret this? I haven't done any market research yet, but does this mean that there isn't much demand? [link] [comments] |
Is there any point in creating a startup in Canada? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 10:14 AM PDT Hi, I'm born and raised in Canada, thinking of making a startup one day. Based on the research I've done, it seems like a disadvantage to not be born in the US and funding for startups here is quite limited. The business culture here tends to be relaxed as well, not to mention the brain drain of talented Canadians to the US. What options do Canadians have to be just as successful as their American counterparts? Do people just end up incorporating their company in the states and from there hire American employees? How do successful Canadian unicorns do it? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Where to find angel investors? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:36 AM PDT I am trying to build up a premium audio startup, but I need to find an angel investor to get money for the patents, lawyers, and brand name. After that I plan to start campaigns on Indiegogo and Kickstarter after that's all done. Is there any way to actually talk to a real investor without paying a 100 bucks a month? Thx for any info! Special Business Plan : Every thing for FREE Posted: 22 Mar 2020 05:20 AM PDT I am working on BtoB solution and it should attract 100K French companies in less than 1 year. My competitors charges between 71€ and 229€ per month. I decided that my solution will be FREE and I will ask for dons ! Do you think is a good idea ? The solution is about synchronise company data with gouv services and accounting services. Why for Free ? I am a minimalist programmer/businessman, I don't like solutions with many options, so my solution will answer to 3 essentials needs and I know every company owner will like this, and I need only 3 months to publish ma solution and 6 months to appear in the first page of all search engines (I practice extrem programming and I am expert seo and web marketing) [link] [comments] |
