S.P.I.N. Selling is as relevant today as it ever was

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 09:12 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of iterations and versions of the S.P.I.N. selling method (by Neil Rackham) that debuted in 1988. That's because there's a golden thread running through it and all methodologies like it:

    Connection.

It's a matter of actually connecting with the person. It's not knowing where you want the meeting/call to go, it's knowing how to get them there.

Hell, you don't even have to know your product inside and out. The book even mentioned this. Just take your prospect on an emotional and logical journey from current to future, really making sure they understand just how much impact their problems could have on their world and how great a solution would be. Research in the prospecting stage, or just having a pre-existing relationship with the person is 100% necessary to being effective at this. Unless you're a wizard or just very attuned, of course.

This book is like $3 most of the time. If you haven't read it I highly suggest it. Hopefully this jumble of unorganized thoughts can help someone today in this crummy time to be a salesperson.

Using humor and poor Photoshop skills to completely destroy my reply rate

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:30 PM PDT

hey sales peop's, I wanted to share an email that officially hit 50% reply rate today. You read that right. 50%.

One of our main events of the year was supposed to be last week. I sent an email to the prospects that were supposed to attend with a poorly executed photoshop montage of what our booth would have looked like, with couple reps Photoshoped in, along with

"Today, you were supposed to attend XYZ event, so was I. So here's what you would have seen, strolling around the Exhibition Hall, looking for new opportunities (excuse my poor Photoshop skills):

    MONTAGE

I would have asked you a few questions and if you were looking for my widget, I'd have explained what we do for similar firms, which sounds like this :

    "INSERT VALUE PROP".

Would you like to have the rest of the conversation through Zoom? I'll put this montage as a background picture, and it'll be almost like XYZ event.

People seems to have loved it, had a good laugh and joyfully agreed to meet.

    Stay safe everyone!

Requesting my due commissions without going apeshit

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 11:09 AM PDT

I left my former employer in January, and was owed commissions. There is no question about that from their side.

They've been dragging their feet for now close to 3 months in paying them, all sorts of excuses week to week on why the check wasn't sent or whatnot. COVID-19 has now given them a whole new set of excuses.

If it was a nominal amount, I'd have let it slide. It's about $5K that my family can certainly use now.

I've gone back and forth 12 times on email asking for updates, being professional and polite. I would like to continue in that vein but I was wondering if anyone had some good language/suggestions to turn up the heat a bit without being threatening.

Everything I type makes me sound like Tony Soprano which, honestly, I don't hate right now. I just know that's not the best approach in a small state/industry.

Company laid off 40% of our staff due to corona crisis

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:50 AM PDT

So, my company announced a cost reduction of 40%. Our company is in the hair and beauty industry which is a market heavily affected by the corona crisis. This post might sound like a grunt (and kind is) but I would like some directions right now. Our department (composing of mainly sales, support and marketing) were cut by half. Fortunately, I was saved from the laid off but it is heart crushing to see friends and sometimes even families getting torn apart by a decision that is not on our hands. Right now, there is no one on support and even myself (in a sales role) will have to deal with support activities. Is there anyone in a position similar to mine? How would you approach doing sales and support at the same time?
I sincerely am thinking of starting something of my own just to not get over this any time again in the future. Giving someone else the decision to cut your entire income in a single meeting is not something that I want to go through again.

    BDR during COVID

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:32 PM PDT

I've been working at a IT firm for a couple of months now as a Business Development Rep. My role typically entails cold calling, emailing, and finding new accounts for my team.

With everything going on right now, does anyone have any advice for staying busy during these times? I feel as though it doesn't make sense to cold call as many of the IT teams are working remotely. Do email campaigns make more sense to focus on?

Apply now, or wait for this to die down?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:23 PM PDT

What's up guys. I've been out of work for a few weeks now and have been interviewing at a number of places. I'd say out of the 10 or so places I've interviewed at 7/10 have completely froze hiring, or aren't starting new hires till may/June.

Does it make sense to apply to jobs now or wait for things to open back up?

Two reasons why I think it might be best to hold off on job hunting for a month or two: -I don't want to start working at a job remotely, learning a new business/product/sales cycle seems more difficult virtually. -The jobs I've been applying for have between 50-400 applicants, with so many qualified people out of work right now it will be hard for me to stand out, and I don't want to not have the opportunity to apply to these same jobs once the competition dies down.

Luckily I have the savings to not have a full income for a 3-4 months, and can supplement with Uber/amazon delivery if I have to.

Thoughts? I'm sure a lot of you are in similar positions. I've never had to look for a job in a recession so don't really have much insight on what to do next.

Any advise would be great, thanks!

Which is better for an entry level recent graduate to break into sales: an MBA, Masters or going straight into the field?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:17 PM PDT

As a person who is looking to get into sales, I've been told that there are sales professionals who have gotten an entry level sales jobs, such as an inside sales rep, SDR, BDR, outside sales rep, account manager, recruiter, etc without a bachelors degree but there are some jobs that require bachelors degree.

The question is, for an entry level position, how beneficial would it be for a person who recently graduated college, with no "true" sales experience (other than retail, a couple of marketing companies and a research experience) to get a masters degree (possibly in communications, advertising, PR, etc) or an MBA for an entry level sales position, such as a Sales Development Representative or an Inside Sales Representative role? I was told it is possible to get a sales position even with or without a degree but was wondering how much of a difference it would make.

If you're going into sales as your first true job after graduating college, would it be beneficial to get a masters degree or is it possible to just jump straight into one of these roles easily? Would it be worth the money to get such a masters degree? Specifically a career pertaining to software sales, insurance sales or medical device sales.

    Thanks everyone!

    Management obsessed with fake leads

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 11:50 AM PDT

We are expected to close a lot of people we talk to, normally fine the leads are great. We have next to no control over leads we are expected to work and processes we have to follow. But it works so no big. Problem is that someone high up is convinced that we have found the ultimate lead so we have to tryto pitch.

Thing these are opposite of a lead. Like I literally think we would do better if we were just randomly calling people. Best case scenario they answer with please never call me again. Most are already our customers and confused why we don't know that. Most of the rest are ones who due to internal policy we're not allowed to sell to. The calls to take forever and they are also the most likely to cancel if we do happen to sell. I've begged and I pleaded and I reasoned and done everything I know to get management to do anything to alter the process or have fewer of these or anything and their response was to almost double the number. The worst part about it is I don't even think that it's anybody trying to be a jerk and they legitimately do not understand why we are not excited about this. It's like talking to somebody who's mentally ill I don't know what to do. The official policy is that this is not allowed to fail, and I'm not making that up they have literally told us that, the problem is it failed 6 months ago and they will not admit it.

The job pays more than anything else I'm going to get in the area and they are otherwise really good and polite people so I don't want to leave.

Basically the only thing I can do is make minor alterations to my script and work on my tone of voice, but I don't know how to go about it in a way that's productive. If I can just figure out a way to not get them to hang up on me and blow me off all the time in the first 30 seconds, then I can probably get my numbers up to something if not good at least not so horrible.

    Selling to/for Non-Profits

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:37 AM PDT

    Hello salespeople of the world.

Does anybody work for a company that helps non-profits; either to raise more money, or to make their business' more efficient?

I have been thinking about my career in sales, and the driving force behind it has been to help change the world.

Sure, the latest and greatest tech companies do help change the world, but helping Non-Profits seems energizing to me.

Any thoughts or experiences to speak of?

Would love some advice from people who've worked in event sales.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:12 AM PDT

I originally applied (via a recruiter) for a sponsorship/exhibitions sales role at a company that runs, on average, six events a year. They ended up hiring someone else for that gig and they had , prior to ever having met me, hired someone else to take charge of delegate sales (that is, selling tickets to people). For whatever reason, the original hire for the delegates side didn't turn up on their first day so they called and offered me the job. I needed the gig so I figured why not.

This was about a month or so before coronavirus shut everything the fuck down. I'm very lucky in that I have a job, but very unlucky in that it's a job in an area that is pretty unsecure right now (events getting cancelled left and right) and, even when I am calling about events in September/October, I'm getting what you'd expect, "yeah, maybe this could be interesting, but we can't commit to anything right now because OF EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON (slowly coming to hate that phrase ha).

Anyway, what I'm trying to do is build a pipeline of people who are sort of 50/50 on coming, depending on what things look like in terms of travel restrictions and all that jazz. And my company has been pretty understanding. They realise not many individuals or companies are looking to drop $1-2k on a delegate pass to one of our events right now.

    My question is two fold:

In normal times, for those of you who have worked in a similar role, how do you approach your prospects? Any tips at all will be welcomed. And now that Covid-19 is the only "event" anybody cares about, how are you handling that?

Thanks for your help. It's great to have a resource out here like you guys all going through similar stuff.

    Anybody Work at Salesforce?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:12 PM PDT

I'm sure most of you have used the software, but has anyone here worked at the company Salesforce? They're supposed to be one of the best companies in the world to work for and their sales people make a ridiculous amount of money. Kind of have a long term goal of working there and was wondering if anyone has experience there.

Account Executive for an Australian Private College - ideas?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:39 AM PDT

    Good morning

I work as an Account Executive for a Private College in Sydney, Australia.

Due to the recent developments with COVID-19, our entire workforce is now working remotely from home.

Our team of Account Executives have been requested by the Director of College to come up with a strategy to engage our internal, as well as external stakeholders. We are very used to face to face meetings in cafes and site visits, however, I feel setting up Zoom meetings could be more of a hindrance than being beneficial for them.

My fellow sales experts, can you suggest what can an Account Executive do in times like this?

    Many Thanks

    Not getting the sale

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:02 AM PDT

Hello so I'm very new to sales and have only been working in it for 6 mo.

After a bit of studying and self improvement I finally wrote a decent sales copy (article) and have been running it via google ads.

The CTR is good and the engagement is decent. On the bottom of the page we have a buy now button.

With an app we use I can see that the buy now button gets a lot of clicks. But no one has purchased yet. The button leads directly to the amazon page we sell it on so the issue can't be issues with the site.

I'm stumped as to what is causing people to stop at the last step.

It's a new product so it doesn't have any reviews on amazon yet, could that be the issue? Should I just be more patient?

I sell dietary supplements on behalf of my company if that makes a difference.

    Thanks!

    Best webinar software?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 05:40 PM PDT

    Howdy partners!

I've spent the better part of the day looking at webinar webinars and I still don't know what the hell I'm doing in terms of which way I want to go with it or if what I need is available.

I haven't gotten any clear answers on which software does what and I don't want to mess around with a dozen different products, so I'm appealing to y'alls experience on this one:

I need something that will lead to a landing page where I can extract the information I need, they book an appointment to the webinar, they get sent a welcome email, then they get sent a reminder text to remember to check their email for the webinar link, they watch the webinar, then they can book a time to talk to me about my services.

That's all I want in the world. Is that a lot to ask? Is it? It's a serious question. Where can I find an all-in-one solution?

Should you avoid being an Account Executive at a SaaS company if you value work-life balance?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:23 PM PDT

I have heard that the typical AE at a SaaS company works about 60 hrs a week and at minimum 50 hrs. As a BDR, it is rare I go over 40 hrs a week.

On one hand, I love sales and what it can teach me about people and why they do what they do but if I am being, I know I am not going to have my youth forever. I still love partying on the weekends, meeting up with friends after work, having dates, and investing time on my fun hobbies.

Partying with coworkers never really is the same for me as partying with people I met at bars or at hobbies either.

Should someone who values that work life balance avoid going the AE route?

For those of you who follow pickup content or read that book "Never split the difference" could relate.
