Inspired by deep depression, I taught myself to code, built a manual mood tracker used by 285k people which earned ~$100k then raised $1m in angel/VC funding to launch a fully automatic mood tracker. Ask me anything!

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 11:38 AM PDT

10 years ago I was given a serious mental health diagnosis, my world was flipped upside down. I was in my second year of college and I was hospitalized for a month. Upon coming out my mom (a psychiatrist), my therapists, and doctor all recommended I track my mood. I didn't agree with it, but it came at a cost.

I struggled with my mental health for 2 years and slowly learned the wisdom of mood tracking and seeing how what I do impacts my mental health.

Not wanting to use the flimsy paper given by my psychiatrist and unhappy with the mood tracking apps at the time, taught myself to code and built myself a mood tracker that was used by 1/4 million people, featured by Apple on the front page of the App Store, and generated around $100k from a freemium subscription.

I've now built an automatic mood tracker called Misü because the top reason folks stop tracking is that manually tracking anything make it a hard habit to keep up.

    What is Misü?

Misü (www.misu.app) automatically tracks your mood through facial micro-expressions while you use your computer. Misü helps you learn about your mood trends, as well as how various apps and sites impact your mental health. Would love your feedback on the app.

Turns out that 10% of the U.S. has tracked their mood in the past, and using Misü, people track their mood for 10x longer than they would for manual tracking.

If you are on Product Hunt and feel like Misü is worthy of your vote, that would be awesome: www.producthunt.com (as of posting Misü is top #7 for the day)

Feel free to ask me anything about:

    • Where I see the future of mental health tech / industry
    • Raising VC/angel funding as a solo founder (been rejected +100 times and have raised nearly $1m)
    • Learning to code without any prior background
    • Why I choose to use webcams when privacy concerns are at an all time high
    • The experience working with 3 cofounders (1 at a time) and none of them working out
    • Surprising things we've learned about the product so far
    • A funny fundraising story where my tech read my anxiety during a meeting and the investor called me out.
    • Working through the inevitable doubt that comes when runway is low and momentum is lower
    • Learnings from making pivots (x3) to the business strategy.

I’m building the sustainable death care solution that turns your body into a tree when you die. Help me make this a movement.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:13 PM PDT

Hey folks, I want you to imagine something for a sec: what if instead of mourning our loved ones in graveyards dedicated to death, we celebrated them in forests dedicated to life? I'm trying to make this vision a reality by building reLive, the sustainable death care solution that turns your body into a memorial tree when you die (by mixing CO2-neutrally cremated ashes with seeds and soil), and lays that tree to rest into a 'memorial forest' space – the graveyard of the 21st century. I have a lot of visions for what this forest space would be like – it would be a beautiful, tranquil place you want to stay awhile. It would be a place for reflecting on the past and reconnecting with the present and with nature. There would be regular events to keep the space alive. I am even imagining planting QR codes at the base of each memorial tree – when you scan them, these codes would pull up a live forum where friends and relatives of that person can post memories and photos, giving you an insight into who they were. It's the best way for someone coming to the end of their life to complete the circle of life and leave a sustainable legacy, and its a new way for all of us who remain to stay connected to those we have lost. If you think this is a great concept, please join the movement! All you have to do is sign this petition: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/relive-the-sustainable-death-care-solution The more signatures I have, the more I can demonstrate people are interested in this, and the more likely I am to find an investor who will help me bring this concept to life. Urgent Update: You Must Re-Apply For the $10,000 SBA Grant Program To Be Considered.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 08:34 PM PDT

The Grant (Skip This Section If You're Already Familiar):

If you're not already aware there is a $10,000 EIDL grant available through the SBA. This is part of a emergency business loan program. The benefit of this grant is IF you use the funds to pay for business related expenses including but not limited to payroll, utilities, and mortgage/rent payments this grant is forgivable.

Those eligible to apply for this grant are business, contractors, non-profits, or sole props that have hired employees or contractors over the past year. If you have no employees or contractors you will have to look into a different assistance program.

The $10,000 EIDL grant is part of a larger business loan program. Loans are available for up to 2.5X payroll expenses. The term on these loans is 10 years with less than a 4% interest rate. There is verbiage that this loan may also be forgivable if spent on business expenses but I don't see explicit confirmation of that.

In the CARES act it states that even if you are denied for the business loan program you are still eligible for the $10,000 grant.

The entire document can be viewed here: https://assets.bwbx.io/documents/users/iqjWHBFdfxIU/rSVHQuPeCB\_g/v0

    Re-Applying

If you already applied for the EIDL grant last week you likely spent about 2 hours filling out and submitting forms. Well it looks like the SBA was overwhelmed with these submissions and enacted an easier way to apply online.

The SBA is sending out emails that you must re-apply for the grant. Even if you have already applied. SBA email here

The good news is this form will be a breeze if you have already filled out the original forms

    How To Re-Apply

Visit https://sba.gov and click the covid-19 grant link at the top of the page

Here is a step by step tutorial you can follow along with on how to apply online so you can make sure you fill the form out properly make make sure you don't miss anything: https://youtu.be/AMLZ31lEpro?t=602

What is the real opportunity to provide value here? (Not scabbing/hoarding/etc.)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 09:39 AM PDT

The economy for the next 12 months changed dramatically. Where is the real opportunity to provide value with this shifting economy?

Some thoughts: Sanitary enclosures for food and products delivery. Anything delivery service-based, especially alcohol/vices. A grocery store/market that operates strictly as delivery (no walkthrough storefront)

How do we retool existing proven business models for the corona economy?

Interview with Leon Barnard (Balsamiq) about Remote Work and building a company that lasts decades

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 12:42 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I just finished this interview with Leon Barnard from Balsamiq about remote work. Leon is interesting because he has worked at Balsamiq – a remote-first company primarily based in the US and Italy – for over 8 years!

In this interview, we talk about how that timespan has changed the company, how you can build a company that lasts over a decade (Balsamiq was founded 12 years ago) and how important trust is for remote work.

    ---

Hello Leon! You are the Education Team Lead at Balsamiq, a well-known remote-first organization. Before we jump into it, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do in that role!

I got my start in the field of User Experience over 15 years ago, so I have a lot of domain knowledge about wireframing and UX. My job at Balsamiq is to use the knowledge I've accumulated to educate our customers - most of whom are not designers by training - about how to create better user interfaces. My team and I create educational material for our Wireframing Academy site.

Balsamiq has been around for a while – 12 years – and you have been part of that journey for 8 years. How has Balsamiq developed since then?

It has changed a lot, but also not that much 🙂

When I joined, there were just 10 people. Now that there are 33 of us, it feels huge! Compared to a typical startup, though, adding 23 people in 8 years is nothing. But the goal of our CEO and founder, Peldi Guilizzoni, has always been to keep the company as small as necessary. He has had to reluctantly accept that Balsamiq's "natural size" is more than just him and a few friends.

So I've seen us learn how to become a "real" company during my time here. We've added teams, an HR department, internal tools, and, most recently, lead and organizer roles for our teams. Yet we still, stubbornly, you could say, resist having managers. This has kept a lot of our core culture the same. It means that we all feel ownership of, but also responsibility for, our own performance and the well being of the company.

How did you get your start there?

I became a fan of Balsamiq, the tool, when it first came out. In 2008 the prevailing tool for UX designers was Adobe Photoshop, which was never a good fit for us. It led designers to create really good looking designs that had little connection to user needs or developer frameworks. Balsamiq allowed me to produce UI designs that focused on workflow instead of appearance.

At some point I felt that I had mastered the basics of UX and started looking for a way to stay in the field without doing the day-to-day design exercises. The timing was perfect, as Balsamiq was then creating the first position in what would become the Education team.

I give a lot of credit to Peldi for having the foresight to create the role that I'm in at Balsamiq. He anticipated early on that a key to our success would be creating not just a great product, but also badass users, the people who do amazing things with it.

I have put the full interview at https://nohq.co/blog/leon-barnard-of-balsamiq/ (it's a little long for a reddit post)

Marketing consulting advice needed - how to increase sales for new product in company

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:56 PM PDT

I am a student that's enrolled in a marketing course. For one of our projects we are acting as consultants for a local company/business and was wondering if anyone has some insight on how to approach our case.

Our client is a small pole fitness company that also offers a wide variety of alternative fitness classes for women which include yoga, aerial hoop, barbell training etc. The business is mainly known for the pole fitness classes, which is what the company originally started with before expanding to the other fitness classes. As a result, the other classes do not perform as well as the pole classes with regards to number of registrations. Our client wants to know how to increase sign-ups/registration for the alternative fitness classes (yoga, barbel, aerial hoop etc.

We spoke to a consultant a few weeks ago who suggested than in this case, it would be good to focus on what is working well for the company right now (pole fitness classes), expand that and build more brand power until eventually people also sign up for the other classes.

What do you think about this? Any help, advice would be appreciated!

What are your thoughts on making money on Fiverr.com?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:48 PM PDT

I am currently looking for ways to make money online. I can make basic web pages and I am also able to animate "explainer videos". Do you think I could make money on Fiverr with these skills?

What are your experiences with Fiverr, was it easy to get clients and make money? Or did you advertise your business on there and not get much action?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Shipping Flat Boxes

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:46 PM PDT

I've owned a small brick & mortar business for a couple of years now and with the recent mandatory closures we're looking at pivoting to some online sales we haven't tried before. I am wanting to see if anyone has any experience and advice in shipping large, flat (literally unfolded) cardboard boxes in small quantities.

The smaller boxes are easy to place into padded envelopes, and larger quantities in small boxes, but we are trying to ship 1-5 large boxes (20"x8"x50") while trying to maintain a shipping rate that makes sense at that quantity. Any specific services to use? Ideas for packaging boxes of that size without ultimately having to place them in a bigger box?

    Thanks for any help!

Australian midsize businesses only. WeChat/Weibo Marketing to Chinese customers/businesses?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:24 PM PDT

    Hi,

Weird timing with the COVID-19, I am aware of the ironic timing of me posting this right now.

I was researching Australian businesses and the prospect of doing WeChat marketing for Chinese nationalists/foreigners in Australia in order to increase (either foot/web) traffic to your website or stores.

I was reading that many Chinese nationalists don't do foreign social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Reddit). They typically stick to WeChat and Weibo - even when they are traveling to other countries.

One thing that I am learning that midsize businesses are interested in marketing to this new source of Chinese leads so they can stand apart from other midsize companies in Australia.

If you own or work at a midsize company (50-250 employees) in Australia, my question for you is?

Have you considered marketing to the Chinese population in Australia? If so, what has been one of the largest hurdles that you had to overcome?

On another side, if you work in B2B (business-to-business - businesses selling to other businesses), what are some of your hurdles when it comes to marketing to Chinese businesses?

    Idea: Full service home security

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 09:32 AM PDT

I recently moved into a home that has a lot of windows and doors. Naturally, coming from a 1 entrance apartment I felt a bit exposed to anyone wanting to enter the house. I did multiple things to give me peace of mind:

    1. Door frame reinforcements so it is "kick proof."
    2. Window film on both side off all accessible windows and doors that prevent easy shattering. This stuff was shocking strong and actually works.
    3. Wireless security camera system with lorex cameras.
    4. Multiple chimes that, when armed, trigger an alarm if a door is opened.
    5. Window shatter chimes that trigger an alarm if a window breaks.
    6. Light system that turns light on and off at certain times when I leave for extended periods of time.
    7. Just because I was having fun, I also installed water detection alarms if there is a flood and smart co2 / smoke detectors.

I enjoyed the process and feel a lot better now that it is done. I work in venture capital, but would love to start a home security business, just doing the same things I did above for other people's homes. How viable is this business? Is there a market? Is it already saturated? Thanks!

How do I get customers for a resume review side project?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:03 PM PDT

I'm creating a resume review side project with a handful of underemployed friends: https://getmeacv.expert/

What's the best way to acquire customers and spread word of mouth? I am currently trying to tackle adwords but a lot of the terms we would target are prohibitively expensive. I don't expect to scale this service into a large enterprise, so how do I target a small/slow/steady trickle of customers?

We've started making virtual classes and selling these, as well as merch, but wondering if anyone else out there has come up with creative solutions that might apply to this space? Any thoughts or ideas would really be appreciated!

Helping Small Businesses Apply for Small Business Loans (Pro-Bono)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:40 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have created a resource that small businesses can use to gain access to attorneys who can help them apply for the various small business loans that the government is now offering. this is a pro-bono program and you will not need to pay for the attorney as it pertains to the loan application. the only catch is that we will match the attorney with a legal intern who will help the attorney in the application process. Full disclosure, my company connects law firms and law students through virtual internships, but this is pro-bono from my end as well. we are looking for (1) attorneys who want to help on a pro-bono basis, and (2) small businesses that need help with their application.

Coronavirus and working digital marketing part-time - my job

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:17 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm a digital marketer who does content creation for a bike shop. I shoot products infield, create videos for youtube, Facebook and manage the online social media. I go to the store 2 times a week get content but since the Coronavirus I have been limiting myself to 1 day a week. I am at the store now and feel very unsafe here. I feel as though I shouldn't be here for the safety of others. I was thinking of either waiting for my boss and exploring options with him in regards to content creation. I feel as though I either need to get creative and repurpose content so that I don't have to come in until further notice of where the virus goes. I would need to get really creative with work to produce content were needed so I can still get paid. I am trying to figure out how I should handle this and if I need to wait around for him to tell him. I feel as though maybe I can do this via email.
