School found USB killer drive, plugged it in, now say I’m responsible for damage?? [AL]

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:33 AM PST

My school recently started searching bags and pockets when you come in each morning because someone got caught with pot

Last Thursday when they searched me I forgot that I had a USB killer (thumb drive that electrocuted anything you plug it into). They asked me what it was and I said it was a thumb drive. Then they asked me what was on it and I was honest and said it would break computer that you plug it into.

They took it away and apparently they didn't believe me and plugged it in. Now they're telling me that I'm responsible for paying for the two school laptops and if I don't pay them $3000 they're calling the police!

Is this legal for them to force me to pay after I warned them that it would break any computer they plugged it into? What happens if I don't pay? Can they suspend me?

I don't have money and if I tell my parents what happened they're going to sell everything I own

My Father passed away and left me heirlooms but my step mother/will executor told me she gave away the items or they broke and she threw them away. Not sure how to proceed.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:12 AM PST

    Hello Everyone,

First time poster here. I should have made this post a long time ago but death has a way of clouding your mind. I know a lot of time has passed buy I owed it to myself to try to pursue this and I am only now feeling like its something I can deal with, so here it goes:

My Backstory: In 2017 I moved across the USA to a new job after graduating from college. I spent all of my savings to do so. I am currently on the east coast and my step mom and the items are in California.

My Stepmoms backstory: She met my dad when she was young and he was older, he had money she did not. She has a history of lying and deceiving. She broke into my moms house and destroyed her birth certificate and passport and a bunch of heirlooms years ago. There was also a bunch of shady stuff when he was in the nursing home before he died, my father told me she would yell at him and since he had Alzheimer couldn't remember why but she wouldn't tell him, cancelled his credit cards, he even told me he was thinking of divorcing her, had planned to go to the lawyers but couldnt because his card was cancelled and I was looking into contacting lawyers about elder abuse. I spoke to him multiple times a week and you could barely tell he had Alzheimer, it was usually just small things.

My father passed away in the summer of 2018, days after trying to get to a lawyer. My step mom was the executor of the will and I was contacted by the Lawyers with his will. I emailed and texted to contacted her in 2018 but didnt hear back from her until early 2019 when I contacted her again.

She told me I have 30 days to pick up the remaining items from the will. There were specific things layed out in the will, paintings, a grandfather clock, some statues, stuff like that which all stated should go to me. I am not sure on their monetary value but they are important to me because they are passed down from my family.

When she responded and said I had 30 days to pick up the remaining items or she would get rid of them, she said things like, I threw away the clock because it broke, or that she gave a painting away to a neighbor because my dad really liked that guy. Maybe 5 out of 30 items were still left. On top of this, I live across the country and had no money, or means of just shipping painting or statues.

When my father was alive, we had multiple discussions(i know legally it doesnt matter) that she would help to fly me out or help to pay for shipping(they have the money to do so). At the time I told my dad he needs to put that in his will because I didn't trust her. He did so he never did it.

I responded to her 30 day deadline reminding her of the above information that she said she would help to get those items to me or help me to fly out but she never responded to that and a few other attempts to contact her.

So here I am a year and a half later. The last time I reached out was a few months ago. I have no family and still dont have much money to sue, not that I know how much legal fees would be for something like this. I just want to get the stuff my dad wanted me to hang on to keep for our family.

Thank you all for any help!

My study abroad program is canceled due to the Coronavirus outbreak in Italy and my school won’t reimburse us for the 2 months of rent we can’t use.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:56 PM PST

I'm studying abroad in Rome through the university of California extension abroad program (UCEAP), and today they announced that the program is canceled because Italy reached a level 3 travel advisory warning from the CDC and the state department. All rent and fees were payed at the beginning of the program for the entire program.

Currently we are required to leave rome and return to the US if we are to receive reimbursement for our flight home, however when we asked about how we will get the money back for the two months of housing we already payed for, we were told that there will be no partial refund because that payment has already been made, and we don't have the option to stay and live in them if we wanted to.

Is there any rights that we have as it comes to getting back the thousands of dollars that we each individually payed for something we don't have any ability to use?

    Abusive minor....

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:09 AM PST

My step child (12 years old) has anger and behavioral issues. He has recently become physically violent with his mother and she has had to stop him from coming after me with a knife. Police were called in both situations. Nothing was done and the system is broken. My question is this, in the state of Illinois, is it possible to get an order of protection against a minor step child living in your household?

Boyfriends parents kicking me out of house (DE)

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:59 AM PST

I have been living at a cottage with my boyfriend that his parents own since October. In November, he relapsed (he's an alcoholic) and he was sent into a 30 day program. I stayed in the house by myself. He got back mid December but was sent back again in January. I spent early January until mid February alone again in the house. My boyfriend got back in mid February and immediately started drinking again. This time when he was found out, he started blaming me. He told his parents I stole things out of the house (untrue), I do drugs (untrue) and I'm mean to him and the dog (sooo untrue, I love that dog with all my heart). I had no idea he was demonizing next until a couple days ago when I told his dad about how bad his drinking was. His dad said I should move out. I told him I don't have anywhere to go but I'd try to find a place soon. That was earlier this week. Today (Saturday) his dad told me I had to move out by tomorrow at 4pm . So that means by Sunday night, I'm homeless. So I have any rights? I feel completely blindsided because I have tried to be my boyfriends biggest cheerleader but now I'm being punished for his addiction. I just need to know if I have any rights such as a 30 day notice. I have changed my address to this house for some things but only have one piece of mail so far.

NCP asking me to give him half of CS payment that our son is about to receive

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:00 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I have a question regarding a situation that I've been dealing with since this morning. My sons father called me numerous times to ask me how much I just received in CS. For some background, he owes 26k already, and only made 4 payments at the end of 2019 and I haven't received anything since. I know he's working but I don't know his hours, and quite frankly it's none of my business. CS submits a Federal Offset Program referral every 6 months to my knowledge, and was very quick to mail his employer once he was on the books for employment. I do not harass him for it because that is not my place nor my job to do so.

I checked for him, told him nothing was there, and he tells me that the IRS is giving CS his entire return ( about 10k) and that it's not fair because he only received that amount due to claiming his other two sons. So he asked me to give him half of it.

I refused. I told him he should take it up with the IRS and CS and have them correct it if this payment was incorrect. But I would not directly give him any money.

According to him, if they find any discrepancy I would have to pay it all back anyway ( don't ask me how; it's why I'm asking for advice here). I told him to do what he needed to do and contact who he needed to contact.

What are my legal options here? Am I doing anything illegal by telling him no? Does the IRS actually separate funds in that manner, where it would go based on tax credits being received due to dependents that were claimed?

Edit: I live in NJ. I forget that CS laws differ by state.

Ex wife claimed Child Tax credit in contradiction to divorce order

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:34 AM PST

Backstory; my ex wife has claimed our son on the child tax credit in contradiction to the signed divorce order. My CPA found the discrepancy on Thursday and told me that we would have to file a paper return and a dispute with the IRS which I asked him to do immediately.

My fiancée and I share 50/50 with her and in the agreement she would claim him on even years and I would claim him on odd years.

When I confronted my ex about it she said she did not realize what she did but her answers were very invasive on whether or not she actually got the money. (We expect she got it already and probably spent most of it) When I told her she would have to file an amended return she said that she was going to have to speak to a CPA "to protect her bests interests". I told her that we were filing the dispute immediately and she said she deserved the right to fix it.

She also was trying to convince us to let her take this year and we take the next two straight which we said absolutely not.

My CPA told me that filing the dispute with the IRS will open the inquiry and once it has been opened I can show them the divorce paperwork.

That being said I wish I was surprised my ex would try this shit as she is a known scam artist and notorious liar.

I am confident that once the IRS gets the dispute they will hold her accountable for the money but I wasn't sure what would be the best recourse.

Has anyone ever dealt with a situation like this before?

Can I still file a police report? Would it even matter?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:45 AM PST

Long story sort of short, I was raped by my uncle when I was eight. I buried it for years until I was fifteen, hid it from my family, all of that. Apparently he'd also raped my brother and his daughter/niece, but I was the first about 15 years ago. Recently, it's become known to the family. My cousin came forward, she filed a police report, she's getting help. It was a hell of a lot more recent for her. Can I still even file a police report? Will it even matter because some of the pieces are still blurry and because my cousin has already basically put him in jail? If I can file a report, will have to testify in front of him, in front of everyone? I don't know how any of this works tbh. I'm located in Ohio, USA.

Roommate kicking down my door at 2AM

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:55 AM PST

Last night my roommate was drinking and snorting Ritalin, all was good for a while until I told him not to blast music at 2:00 AM because I wanted to go to sleep and it would be rude to our neighbors (we live in a townhouse). Shortly after this he tried kicking my door in and screamed he wanted to kill me. He didn't get in but he caused significant damage to my door and I'm worried he's going to do it again. I guess my questions are 1. What can I do to get him to pay for the damages he caused to my room? And 2. If he does this again what can I do to defend myself if the police can't come in time? I rent in Virginia but do not own a firearm.

Is it legal to pin down or even physically assault a robber who you invited into your home if they attempt to leave before the cops arrive?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:50 AM PST

Say a girl was robbing your room during a house party and I said I was calling the cops and she was trying to leave before they got here. Do I have the right to pin her down and stop her from leaving? What if they're were no witnesses who saw her attempt to steal my stuff except for me?

Accepted offer to work at a site in location X, now company said that contract has been canceled and wants me to work at site in location Y, that is 900 miles away.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:02 AM PST

I was contacted by recruiter and the offer was 20% more than I made. Location was closer to home and the schedule would allow me to spend more time with family - wife and toddler.

The offer letter has a sentence "Due to the nature of this role, your actual work location may vary over time." But I haven't even started in location X. I was told verbally that I would be working at location X for at least a year and travel would be minimum. Also in order for me to get hired I had to agree to a MUTUAL ARBITRATION AGREEMENT. Do I have a case for unlawful hiring?

I quit my previous employer, where I've been working for over 7 years, decent job but pay wasn't great hence, why I took this new opportunity. Now they want me to travel.

    Edit:

    location X = US, SC

    location Y = US, AR

Mechanic has had my truck for 16 weeks and lied over and over, I intend to take it back but am worried he will try to charge me

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:54 PM PST

As I said, I dropped my car off at my mechanic 16 weeks ago to get a few things fixed, he said it should only take a few days. Since then I have corresponded almost every day and most frequently what happens is that I talk to mechanic A who does not work on my car and he claims mechanic B is not in the shop but will call me when he returns, he has never once called me. The straw broke when I went their this morning and he claimed he would be done with my car today, the shop usually only works a half day on Saturdays but he said they would be there till around 6 and I could come get my car when it was ready. I got there around 3:30 and they had left for the day and locked up. I am beyond furious at all of the lying and bullshit, they keep ignoring my vehicle and avoiding me, I intend to go in on monday and take my car back, they claim they have already installed a few parts and the total will be around $300 but I just cant justify paying them anything after all the bullshit, lying, and ultimately the fact that it has taken 16 weeks and I still dont have a vehicle. Am i legally obligated to pay if they can prove they installed those parts? What are my best courses of action?

Am I stuck in this Income Shared Agreement? [Texas, USA]

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:08 AM PST

I 'am located in Texas and I signed an ISA with an online course when I was jobless and thought I wanted to make a carer change. While taking the training I ended up getting a job that I interviewed for before I took the training, when I reached out to the company to let them know that I got a job in another field. They refused to let me out of the program and told me if I didn't finish the program I would still owe $15k now I'm stuck in an ISA for something I will never use.

I know there is a possibility that if I don't make payments I can get sued, but honestly, I'm not trying to rip anyone off, I just think it's unfair to pay $300+ a month for a program that did not help me get my current job.

I'm wondering if I'm just stuck in this program and have to make the $300+ payments a month for the next two years. I seriously need real legal advice.

Pregnant and using Medical Marijuana for Crohns in MA?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:18 PM PST

Tl;dr: I have a prescription for medical marijuana for Crohn's disease in Massachusetts. What could happen if I and/or the baby test positive for THC at the hospital?

I am 18 weeks pregnant, and have Crohn's disease. I have a prescription/medical marijuana card for my Crohn's disease, which has been very helpful for pain, nausea and appetite. With the cannabis, the only other med for Crohn's I have to be on is Humira - usually people with this disease have to also be on a spate of pain killers, anti-emetics, etc (all of which I tried before trying weed, and many of which are not recommended in pregnancy either). I decided to reduce but continue marijuana use through my pregnancy (vaping only) as it also helps with morning sickness, pain and appetite now.

I have been to all my prenatal tests and appointments - everything is good and healthy with me and baby. I'm also seeing my Crohn's doctor once a trimester to ensure things stay good on that end. Before I got pregnant, I asked my primary care physician if the marijuana would be an issue - she agreed that it has it's risks like all medications, is safer than some of the others I could be prescribed, and she also pointed out how bad stress is for a baby, and that she felt continuing my use through pregnancy (though reduced as much as possible) would be the best plan. However, she has since left my local practice and moved to another state.

When I went to my first OB appointment (10 weeks) I told her about my marijuana use for Crohn's. She clearly disliked it, so I asked if it would be a problem (because I could switch OBs) and she said that it would be fine. There was a standard urine test at this appointment for UTIs.

At my most recent appointment (17 weeks), she informed me (VERY nonchalantly!) that she was a "mandated reporter" and had reported on my "drug use," and that I would be tested throughout my pregnancy for drug use and the baby would be tested at the hospital. She said that if the baby tested positive, we would likely have to talk to a social worker "about my anxiety", which doesn't make sense to me because I don't use cannabis for anxiety.

I got very upset (which I'm sure solidified in her mind that I was some kind of anxious, crazy drug user) and concerned that they would take my baby at the hospital. I have since read some more reassuring things that they don't "take babies" in MA just for cannabis use, but I'm still very worried and unsure of what to do next. Obviously I need to contact a lawyer, get a new OB and potentially lie to this one. I have also read that if I stop using by 20 weeks, then the baby's meconium and urine would test clean, and I will absolutely do that if I have to, but if they do cord testing, apparently I'm SOL. So a lot of questions now:

    1. Does having a medical card and prescription protect me at all?

    2. What is Child Protective Services *likely* to do if baby test's positive, and what's the worse case scenario?

    3. Are they likely to test the cord? I *think* based on what my OB said, she has already reported me to whatever agency, so I'm already flagged as someone to test.

    4. CBD doesn't count, right? If I stop THC at 20 weeks and switch to CBD, it doesn't work as well for pain and nausea, but it does help somewhat.

Apologies, I know this was long and rambling, but I was feeling so good about this pregnancy - like I had gotten all my ducks in a row and knew what to expect, and now I feel violated and like my medical information is used against me, and like I have to lie to any OB I see now about what I'm actually doing (which obviously I should have done from the beginning. I feel like an idiot on that part. I just didn't know). Thanks for reading and any advice!

Can these people intentionally park their cars on the road to make people slow down?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:10 PM PST

So there is this family that lives across the street from where we (my family) keep out horses. Ever since they arrived they've been complaining that people drive too fast, (It's a decent sized stretch of road where the limit is 40 MPH) but they keep insisting that people are going WAY over. At first they tried placing sticks in the road so that people would slow down and go around them, I would pick them up and throw them off the road when I'd go to feed out horses. Now they've resorted to parking their cars and trucks so that they are slightly in the road, so now if two cars are headed towards each other in front of their house, one of them is forced to stop so that they don't hit the parked cars. Is it illegal to do this in Washington State?

News wants interviews after friend arrested, should I do it or talk to a lawyer or ?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST

Friend was arrested, everything went so fast that I missed him in court by a few minutes, news station reporters were all there talking about it and said they've never seen someone have a friend come and really wanted me to do an on camera interview(as a character witness I guess).

I didn't do the interview, I've got calls and texts from all of them asking me to do it basically telling me that someone saying he is a decent person who has friends could definitely grasp (and sway?) public to his favor..

Do I do it? Should I speak to a lawyer first(I can't really afford one)? If so, how do I go about that and what do I say or ask for? Is this safe, or am I shooting myself in the foot? Is there a way I can find out who his lawyer is? WA

Renting a House under a reverse mortgage in LA county

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:48 PM PST

Hello, I have been renting a home in LA county for 6 years with no issues( always paid rent on time, no damage to property etc). However, recently I have found out the house that I am renting is under a reverse mortgage. When I told my landlord of this they started the eviction process. Last week I called the bank that the house was under. They told me this was a violation of the landlord's terms and that they would seize the property. What I was told was that when the bank reclaims the house I will have to vacate the property immediately. Is this legal?

Can I file a lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Dept? (NC)

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:40 AM PST

Very long story as short as it can be...

County sheriff's office wrongfully posted a family member's picture on their most wanted list.

Sheriffs showed up to the house (myself, my wife and kids temporarily live with said family member and his wife) multiple times last week looking for him.

After being unable to get to him (he was following legal advice to stay away from home while the lawyer sorted things out) officers showed up to my 8 year old's school to question her about allegations that she had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with (she still doesn't know what's going on). I spoke with the detective on the phone about why he showed up there, he said it was standard procedure because the family member will face multiple charges in NC when they find him.

Since then, documentation has been shown by the lawyer to prove that their allegations are false. The sheriffs office has since removed the family member's picture from the most wanted list, and we have not heard from any officers since.

It seems as if they know they messed up, but I am beyond irate they involved my daughter (I don't even know how they knew to find her since her last name is different than the accused member).

Do I have a case for harassment against the sheriff's office towards my family for false accusations of another family member, and involving my daughter?

I'll answer any other questions that could provide clarity

[IN] is it legal to have two separate apartments with the same exact address?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:26 AM PST

Hello Reddit. I live in a 4 apartment building, and this past fall they added a basement unit. The basement unit has the same address as my apartment. All of the other apartments have different numbers even though it's the same building. (for example, 1 Main St., 2 Main St., 3 Main St., etc) but the basement unit is having mail sent to my apartment. I don't like having their mail and info sent to my address, they're kind of shady people and I already live in a not-so-great area. They go in my mailbox and take mail out of it which also makes me uncomfortable.

Is this legal? Can I even do anything about it? The landlord doesn't seem to care, he lives in another state and isn't involved with anything here. I just don't want to building to be shut down by the city if I complain, I would fear being unable to afford to move immediately at this time. There's probably a ton of things that would fail code inspection.

    Thanks.

[Ontario] Landlord wants me moved out after my yearly contract, after verbally saying I could stay. I've already made arrangements to stay.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:23 PM PST

Hello. So my landlord just sent me an email today saying things have changed and I will need to move out at the end of my contract (60 days on the dot). Her two sons will be moving in along with their friends. All the other tenants I'm living are graduating or decided to move beforehand, making me the only one staying at the house.

Here's my issue. Last year, the landlord was aware that I wanted to stay, and this past January we talked about it and she said it would be fine, we would have to find some more people to fill up the empty rooms (along with her sons). Unfortunately, I got none of this in writing. Now I'm entering the month before exams and school is picking up (I'm in engineering, I really have no time for this) and this is incredibly late to start looking for a place. To make matters worse, I have nothing to fall back on. No family to live with at all.

I'm wondering from a legal standpoint, what can I use to support my case and what can I do to ensure I can stay here? I'm genuinely worried now because I am not over exaggerating, I have nowhere else to live.

    Thanks

EDIT: To clarify, this is my first year living here

Just found friable asbestos in basement of apartment I've been living in for 2.5 years.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:19 PM PST

Now I'm panicking quite a bit. I've been in that basement in the past to store stuff or to take pictures for my landlord when the water heater broke down. My landlord is extremely defensive right now saying she's had the place inspected and never had any issues.

My question is, how likely is it asbestos got up from the basement into my living space? This is a very old house with basically no insulation. The asbestos is on the pipes mostly in tact but a few in awful shape basically hanging off the pipes.

My landlord demanded I don't hire anyone which is fine. I personally want a sweep done of my living space to test the air quality and see if I've been breathing this in for years now. Can I legally have my living space tested without her permission?

Edit- I'm located in a duplex somewhere in Boston, mass. I've talked with a few environmental testers and asbestos abaters and they have confirmed I have degraded asbestos in my basement through photos. My landlord is refusing me a test.

STEP 2. Add some PUSH button traffic (it ONLY takes 2 minutes)
STEP 3. See how the system explode your list and sell your affiliate products on it's own!

So, do you want to start making money???
