I’m retiring in June after 30 teaching in public schools.

My wife is on my insurance but recently turned 65 and now has Medicare part A as her primary. Should I be getting a discount on my family insurance until July?

Right now she only has part A with Medicare but is covered for parts b, and d through my employer. Come July, will she still be covered if I continue to pay into the plan? My cost will go up 30% since I will no longer be employed.

Any thoughts on if she should go outside for a better deal and if so what do you suggest?

Any adjusters here ever had trouble getting a vehicle out of a private impound lot?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:38 PM PST

Got into a car accident close to three weeks ago, the passenger of other vehicle is a tow truck driver. Said my vehicle is too dangerous to drive and said he'd tow it for free. I agreed. Three days later my insurance company tried to tow it out of there but he refused to release it due to paperwork issues or system glitch according to my insurance company. That lasted a week, then he not picking up my adjusters phone call. Looks like they trying to accumulate storage fees or screw me through insurance claim. Or both.

My vehicle wasn't seized or immobilized under the traffic safety act, and yes I agreed to let him move it until my insurance company had more instructions. Didn't agree to let it sit there indefinitely.

Where I am from, I do not think that tow truck driver has the authority to hold my vehicle if it wasn't seized by the police or peace officer. However, my adjuster isn't giving me much information, so I am just sitting here and hoping she is able to get it out and going on that it is some paperwork issues. Does any adjusters here dealt with something like this before or know what is going on?

If this week if he flat out refuses to release my car? Could this be extortion or theft under the criminal code? Should I just call the cops then?

    Auto insurance questions, Oregon, USA

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:21 PM PST

23 year old female 24 in July

Only licensed from June of 2017 until now

One wreck in 2017 while I had my permit, was faulted due to being unlicensed but no ticket was given, just had to report at DMV

Vehicle is a 1979 Dodge B200 (Sportsman Custom, 3/4 ton van, 318 small block, auto trans)

I've basically got two main questions, one with companies and the other has to do with farm insurance.

    1. Since my van is a 1979, it's only got a 13 digit VIN, I've had a hard time getting quotes due to this, mainly more because my work schedule makes calling at office hours terrible, but a few I've reached just couldn't do it because of the age of the van.

Any good companies for older vehicles that aren't particularly valuable or classics but are of that age?

And 2. I'm currently farming about 9 months out of the year, living there and using my van on the farm and to transport stuff to and from.

I've read that if you're a farmer or rancher and your vehicle is used for such more than 50% of the time it can be under farm insurance rather than just standard.

I'm just curious what the peramitters are on farm insurance and how to prove them?

No need for collision, possibly comprehensive but I do all the work on it anyways.

Couple brief gaps in insurance prior to October, my mothers insurance made her pick me up when I dropped my old policy due to selling a broken down car and not owning a running one for a while.

Oh also, it is not a conversion van, nor is it 4x4 or awd, I know that matters as well.

Thanks for any help and suggestions in advance!

Cant wait to get the old girl back on the road, been fighting fuel delivery issues for 3 months now and she finally purrs again!

Got her up here in the 30 day grace period Oregon gives you to insure a new vehicle and spent a few months putting around the farm before having to tear in and fix stuff, I'm ready to be behind the wheel again, not underneath the darn thing.

So again, thanks for any suggestions! I'll be calling around for rates tomorrow just wanted some pointers if I could find em!

What insurance policy do I take?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:05 PM PST

Hello! I have no clue about anything relating to insurance but I found out my father has a whole life policy on me and wants to add an Automatic Premium Loan Provision onto it. In order to do so, I need to sign a document confirming it but I have no clue what any of it means/ I don't know the best choice. From Google I could only find out that this allows him to take out money against the loan and pay it back (I believe) but I don't know much else and don't know if this is common or a good idea... Thank you in advance for your help and recommendation!

Insurance that covers an aquarium breaking

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 05:34 PM PST

So I'm not sure I'm on the right subreddit for this but it seemed to fit best. Basically the situation is I'm going to start renting a house very soon and I would like to setup my aquarium however I want to make sure if it leaks or breaks that I have some sort of coverage so I'm not paying thousands of dollars for water damage. I have called around to multiple insurance companies and all have said renters insurance won't cover it but if my landlord sues me then my liability coverage would cover that. I'm honestly really confused and not sure what I need to do. Any help would be great. Thanks

Hiring a public insurance adjuster after explosion insurance payout (homeowners)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 09:13 PM PST

Talked to in a very condescending way desk adjuster assigned to my parents homeowners insurance claim, until we reached out to a supervisor. Supervisor made the desk adjuster approve extending hotel living expenses as long the funds were in the coverage when the desk adjuster had asked my parents to do temporary fixes and go back to the house as it was structurally sound. Desk adjuster provided payout check only after I sent her a contractor estimate, which she had at first said it looked like the contractor was price gouging. Contacted a local independent adjuster after going back and forth with rude desk adjuster, who states that we can cash the insurance payout and he can still fight for more as long as the check doesnt state final payout on it or on the accompanying letter. In my non expert opinion I feel like some parts of the payout where underpaid and independent public adjuster he can get about twice as much and only charges 10% of payout. Is hiring an independent adjust worthwhile? His company has great reviews online but I've read mixed opinions here on reddit on public independent adjusters.

[Auto + Renter's] Help shopping for insurance

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 08:00 PM PST

    Howdy, folks.

I've been insured with State Farm for like 15 years and recently got a pamphlet stating that they're switching me to a new renter's plan that has a billion-zillion exceptions for common things you'd think renter's insurance would cover you for, and that got me thinking: Maybe it's time to shop around, in general. So I went looking for bundles of auto and renter's like I have now.

Being a nerd, this meant that I went and got a bunch of quotes, and made a spreadsheet.

    My takeaways were this:

    • I know I shouldn't have collision/comprehensive. That's going away.
    • I think I'm paying too much, but I'm not sure because I've never had anyone but State Farm.
    • Progressive's quote is comically low, and I'm trying to figure out what the catch is.
    • Farmers' quote is comically high, and I'm wondering what they're smoking.

So basically, given that I'm a newbie at this stuff, is there any advice you can give me, to keep me from making a really dumb decision that I'll hate later?

    In general:

    • Advice about companies, what you get with regards to service, reputation, etc.
    • Advice about my current coverage/limits. Am I overinsured? Underinsured?

I know it's kind of general and wide-ranging, but I'm hoping that my spreadsheet, featuring multiple sheets, will appease you insurance-types, like the offering of a newborn to the faerie king.

    Thanks!

Does Health Insurance Increase if Diagnosed with Depression?

Medi-cal eligiblity with $800/mo dividend income from large inheritance

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 12:11 PM PST

I am 40 years old and have dividend income of ~$800/mo from various banks where I hold CDs thanks to a large inheritance

Because ~$800/mo is below the Covered California eligiblity threshold, I am not eligible for subsidized Covered California insurance plan.

Based off my income, Covered California has redirected me to Medi-cal.

Now Medi-cal seems to be saying that although I am in the income bracket that would otherwise make me eligible for Medi-cal coverage, my large inheritance could be a factor in denying me Medi-cal coverage.

This would mean I would have to get coverage through Covered California and need to pay the full, unsubsidized insurance premium.

Is not Medi-cal only income based or do you have to show they all the assets you have got so they are satisfied you're run into the ground?

At fault party hired an attorney?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:31 PM PST

Hello everyone! I'm very new, so I apologize for any mistakes.

I had a car accident back in December. I was travelling straight in my lane when another vehicle that was headed the opposite direction crossed over the center line and nearly hit me head on going about 35. I swerved, so they ended up hitting my front fender instead. The impact was great enough that it totaled my car. Luckily they had insurance, so I reported the claim that night, and they accepted full liability the following day. The facts were indisputable. They paid me out for my car, but I ended up with a badly sprained wrist, 2 herniated discs, and 1 bulging disc in my neck, all of which I'm still receiving treatment for.

About a week after the accident, the at fault party tried to file a claim with my insurance company. I was called to give a statement, but when I informed them that the other party's insurance company already accepted liability, a denial letter was sent out to them immediately.

I just found out that the at fault party has now hired an attorney, but I can't imagine what for. Unless they are completely twisting the facts around, I don't see how any attorney would even accept their case.

Is this something I should worry about? Could the insurance company even go back and change their decision at this point? Or could they be trying to come after me personally? Any input is appreciated!

Car Accident - I’m partially at fault. Questions on submitting claim, other party has a lawyer

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:29 PM PST

Background: I was in a car accident (California) and my insurance ruled me 60% at fault, the other guy 40%. I don't quite agree with it but it is what it is. I did not have medical coverage through my car insurance so I used my regular medical insurance and paid out of pocket until I hit my deductible. All in all it was a few thousand out of my pocket. My car insurance has been going after the other party's insurance for half a year now but his insurance has been not responsive and my insurance has submitted some kind of demand letter, it's still ongoing. In the meantime, the other party has a lawyer and is asking to settle for my full policy limit. I doubt his medical costs are actually $100,000 based on how the accident happened so that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I understand I will need to submit a claim directly to his insurance to get my medical costs (partially) covered. Since I don't have medical through my car insurance, my understanding is that I'm on my own for this claim. I'm also a little worried that my medical claim won't work out, given how hard it's been for my car insurance to get his to even respond.

My questions/concerns are: If the companies are able to agree on 60/40 fault, should I expect to get 40% of my medical costs paid by his insurance? I know I have to involve my own medical insurance when it comes time to settle. Could it happen that his insurance agrees to 60/40 with my car insurance (so I'd get back 40% of my car insurance deductible), but then denies any fault to my own medical claim? Basically does the fault percentage agreed upon by the two companies apply to my own claim that I'll be submitting for my medical bills? I fear if they are dragging their feet this much for my insurance company, theres no chance they'll respond to me. I have no idea how this all works and my insurance isn't really fully answering my questions about this since I don't have medical coverage through them.

Additionally, his lawyer is asking for the full $100,000 but my insurance says he's 40% at fault, could that mean my insurance would only pay out $60,000 and then I'm personally on the hook for $40,000? Even if they negotiate down to a smaller number my understanding is that my insurance will cover 60% of his costs, so will the other party's lawyer come after me for the remaining 40%?

My insurance told me they have a hard time believing he needs the full claim and they'll counter, but I'm worrying that I'm going to do something wrong and end up on the hook for a lot of money.

This is my first car accident and I really don't know what I'm doing, any thoughts on my questions would be helpful! Thanks!

[State - TN] Does comprehensive cover windsheild replacement? Why does progressive have a special "$50 deductible" version of comprehensive?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 06:21 PM PST

It seems that some insurance companies in some states cover windsheild replacements once every X number of years due to damage at a zero or low deductible.

No providers listed in tennessee note anything special about this except progressive, which has a set of slightly more expensive comprehensive packages with note "$50 deductible on windsheild replacements"

Is that somehow cheaper than other companies? Or are they upselling you?

    Reimbursement from Insurance Company

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 06:09 PM PST

I was recently in an accident where I crashed my friends car. The damage to the other car was minor (scratches) but she had a bent steering rod. We paid to have the damage fixed ($600) because the car was undriveable and we needed it because she was moving the next day.

We originally decided not to file a claim because her deductible was $1000 so avoiding the insurance company seemed easier.

Several days later, the driver of the other car msg'ed to say we could still ignore the insurance companies but the bodyshop had told him his car was dented and it'd be a $3500 fix. We then filed a claim since this was significantly over the deductible.

The insurance company is now telling us they will not count the $600 we already paid to fix damage from the accident on my friend's car towards the deductible since we didn't do it through the claim.

Do we have any recourse or means to get them to count this $600 towards the total cost & deductible?

We have paperwork from the shop we got it fixed confirming all the work they did including the date and time (after the accident).

Paying out of pocket for the other person for an at-fault car accident?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:47 PM PST

I was involved in an at-fault minor fender bender that busted the other car's parking light with some minor scratches on the bumper. My insurance agent fron State Farm asked me if I would like to pay out of pocket since the accident was minor or have the insurance pay for it.

I would honestly prefer paying out of pocket and not filing a claim on my insurance. But is there a way paying out of pocket can come bite me in the butt later?

Was planning on switching homeowners insurance companies because I found much better rates for the same coverage, but now I need to make a fairly large claim - do I make the claim and then switch or switch and then make the claim?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:46 PM PST

I've owned my home in Los Angeles for almost three years now, have had homeowners insurance through Pacific Specialty the entire time and have not made a single claim. Just recently I was looking into new companies through policygenius.com, who quoted me rates that were significantly better than what I'm currently paying. In the meantime, we've discovered that our breaker box has extensive interior corrosion and needs to be replaced completely. The electrician quoted me $4-5k for the project, but was almost certain it would be covered by insurance because it was due to "normal wear and tear."

My question is, should I make the claim with my current company (or at least see if they'd approve the claim) because I've been with them for so long, or do I switch first and then make the claim with the new company (policygenius recommended Hippo)? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

    Geico "Policy Review"

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:44 PM PST

I received a call from Geico about going over a "policy review" even though my coverage isn't up until July. I got a speeding ticket a few weeks ago and am in the process of submitting a driving class that the court says will make this ticket not appear on my driving record. Is this call a coincidence or did Geico find about the ticket already and are trying to increase my payments? Do I ignore the calls or answer and just not say anything about the ticket?

    Insurance jobs less sales based?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:36 PM PST

My mother has been in the insurance field for over 20 years, having worked at a few of the major companies as an agent. Unfortunately her position is based on performance and her last few months have been bad in terms of meeting quotas. She has stellar reviews of her agency, and has had killer months far exceeding in the past, it's just been slow. Sadly, her job is at risk, and she may be fired, despite being there for over 5 years now. Even if she doesn't, she has been so stressed over the last few years to meet these demands, she wants to find a more stable insurance job with far better job security. Any suggestions would be helpful !

Question about Progressive Umbrella "Worldwide" Coverage

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 03:58 PM PST

I bought an umbrella policy through progressive. I made it very clear on the phone that I am looking for umbrella specifically to have worldwide coverage because I travel a few times a year. I was told that there is no underlying insurance requirement for international incidents and that the coverage is "primary".

After receiving the policy documentation I saw the following:

This policy applies to occurrences that take place anywhere in the world provided an insured person's responsibility to pay damages is determined:

    1. in a suit on the merits in a state territory or possession of the United States of America or a province or territory of Canada; or
    2. in a settlement to which we agree in writing.

I am confused as to what this means. Is it saying that unless there is a suit brought against me in the US or Canada I am not covered? Or am I still covered based on #2? Or is it basically up to Progressive to decide?

    Insurance denied treatment please help

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 03:53 PM PST

I need two teeth to be treated. We agreed with my dentist that it should be root canal treatment + crown. She applied to my insurance (I SHOULD have full dental coverage under Metroplus Essential 4) and today I got their answer in mail. They denied both teeth!!! "to approve the root canal for tooth# the following criteria must be met: tooth # is healthy enough to last a long time and your molar tooth is holding an existing bridge or denture in your mouth, this bridge/denture is in good condition". I can not understand HOW it can be so that my dentist did not explained that the teeth are in good condition and will last long. If dentist does not think they are in good condition enough to be treated then why they ever suggested to treat them? Why wasting my time? I already found a rule that if the tooth should better be removed, they deny the coverage, but well, firstly they never cover the implants and secondly I do not want to remove two normal teeth. It`s a nonsense. What do I do now?

I can see three options: visit another doctor and ask them to send a request for root canal again (is it even allowed?); go to my previous doctor and ask what happened (I have a strong feeling they just did not request properly - and certainly I can`t just call the doctor, I have to visit them just to ask!); call the insurance and appeal myself. Anyway appeal will take like 30 days according to the paper they included with the denial explanation. And I was waiting for their decision about 2 weeks! Looks like a nightmare. Any advice please? I never had such a situation before.
