Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:49 AM PST Hi, I recently took over ownership of a small paint and sip company beginning of this year. One of the venues we do events at was given a 50% off code to use. The previous owner told me that she gave the code to the bar manager (Kelly) to give out at her discretion to those that she liked/ thought needed it but it seems like every single ticket sale is bought with that coupon. I found they also publicly advertise it on their Facebook page to use the discount code for 50% off which I am peeved about. I am making half of what I normally would and it's almost an hour drive away from me too. Part of me wants to say something to the manager about taking the code away but I also feel like they feel very entitled to it now that they've been using it for the past few months now. Examples of entitlement: I did an event there before I was owner, and we downsized from 16x20 canvases to 12x16. (still a great size for painting and in my opinion more manageable). That event was a bit rough because the painting choice was tough too but I didn't think was horrible. No one said anything about it to me that night. Next month I come for another event- Kelley comes up to me (I didn't get to meet her at my last event there) and tells me that so many people complained about me to her. That the canvases were too small, that I was teaching too fast, and just all these complaints that I wouldn't have known because no one said anything. I said I would bring back the larger canvases for them and be slower with my instructions but I am not feeling so great about them. I am doing a huge service to them- 50% off tickets, driving 40 miles total, special ordering larger sized canvases just for them. And they are a dingey dive bar that expects it all for cheap. It is kind of the standard that previous owner made though. She had a $5 off coupon code constantly running on the site which I took off, and I'm still getting sales despite it. Business is actually doing pretty well currently for just taking it over and I can see it only getting better. Anyways- I am looking for advice of how to handle this. I want to take away the coupon code but I feel like I might just lose them as a venue if I did that, which wouldn't be terrible but I think I need to find another venue first to replace them. All my other venues have tickets at full price. Some people know about the $5 off coupon which is used occasionally but I don't mind that. Sorry for the amount of text. I have an event there tonight and looking to see if anyone can help me navigate this situation in a smooth way. I could offer to do $10 off, so instead of $35 a ticket they would be $25? Most people are getting their tickets for $17.50 right now, like buy one get one free essentially. Since I am still so new I don't think I should write off this venue completely but part of me also wants to find a replacement for them. Thanks in advance for any help/advice on this. Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:13 PM PST Hello. This is very off topic but im curious what this kind of scam is called. I couldve sworn someone posted a similar question in this sub about a month ago. Someone i know is always telling me people at his work (he is just an employee) are offering him (weird) jobs. Today he told me someone offered him a job flying drones but the weird thing is the person told him not to tell anyone and is making him sign a disclosure form. Just out of curiosity, why is this always fishy? Sounds like some brainwashing going on but the thing is the job seemed weird but possibly real and the website looked legit. [link] [comments] |

What's your experience working with a virtual assistant? Posted: 25 Feb 2020 03:29 AM PST Anyone here who has hired a virtual assistant for their business? What was it like? Personally, I think they'd be a great help especially if you are scaling your business and needed a lot of stuff done but do not have the capacity yet to hire a full-time employee. The business landscape is also evolving and more and more people are going the remote work route. However, given that it's a remote set up, there's always a caveat in hiring a VA instead of a full-time employee. What do you think are the challenges that you will encounter in delegating tasks to a remote assistant? I'd love to hear your thoughts on what the pros and cons of hiring a virtual assistant for your business! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2020 12:23 AM PST Hello! I was walking home and thinking about shipping rates for my small business and was wondering why hardly anyone seems to do tier based shipping rates? And so on. Has anyone tried this and did it work for them? Maybe other business have deemed this too confusing for customers and usually opt for flat rate? [link] [comments] |
Business partner want out after 4 months and 80k for his part of the business. Posted: 24 Feb 2020 09:51 PM PST We bought a restaurant with two other associates. The initial investment was 70k we remodeled the place and spend about 130k total. The business has been mostly running with family as staff. Have a few employees and so far it has been breaking even. The ownership is divided 40,40,20. The business partner wants out with the excuse of not having enough time and help from his part of the family to run it with the rest of my family and the other partners family. Now he wants 80k for his part of the business. The other day he mentioned that he was also willing to purchase my part for 90k. I am neither selling nor buying since I invested a good portion in my percentage. The business is barely starting up again because the previous owners couldn't keep it open due to firing all the staff. This business has been around for a while and has its loyal customer already... so we are not starting from scratch. If we divide our initial investment he investment 52k but want 80k. It seems unfair for him to request so much money so soon. I don't know what to do. What are your thoughts and/or suggestions that we should do moving forward. Btw I do not want to sell my part nor does the other partner. Please help! TL:DR: business partners want 80k for an investment of 52k in just 4 months. He also suggested to buy my part for 90k. I am not selling. Please help!!! [link] [comments] |
Searching for business partner - software dev Posted: 25 Feb 2020 03:04 AM PST Hey guys and gals! I'm looking for someone to partner with in a new business venture. I'm a US citizen currently located in Ukraine and specialize in putting together dev teams for tech projects. Unfortunately it's been quite difficult to handle sales from here. If anyone out there is from a tech-related field, has some sales experience or maybe even an existing customer base, please feel free to reach out via dm. Looking forward to hearing from you. How do you convince regular customers to buy a higher tier package or place a bulk order? Posted: 25 Feb 2020 02:47 AM PST Getting one large payment is much better than many smaller, albeit regular payments, especially for a growing business. So how do you convince customers to do this? For context, I'm in the service sector and have been offering quantity discounts on bulk pricing. That said, I don't like offering too many discounts as I think it devalues the brand and isn't always worth it. [link] [comments] |
Is open-source scheduling software worth it or should I go for premium? Posted: 25 Feb 2020 02:33 AM PST Hey guys, I was looking at open-source apps like these or these. For a small business that is careful with its costs, is it worth it to consider one of these apps or should I go for more costly premium apps? On the surface, they don't look that different, but I'm curious if you guys have experience with these. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:00 PM PST For the last few years I've used Ring Central to field business calls. What I love about it is that when someone calls my business number, answering the phone gives me a recording saying that someone is calling my business number. Then I can push "1" and answer my cell as my business. Frustratingly, RingCentral has raised their prices over 300% in the last 2 years, and it no longer feels like a worthwhile expense. What other options are on the market for a similar solution? [link] [comments] |
How to reject raffle prize requests Posted: 25 Feb 2020 01:43 AM PST Hi, I run a small board game cafe, and get several requests a week for raffle prize donations. I used to give out loads of vouchers etc, but I can't afford to keep giving them out! At Christmas it's very bad so I resorted to running a competition to get a raffle prize (just a Facebook post that people could tag their schools on and we randomly picked ten schools) but then I got a bad review and an abusive message saying I discriminate against disabled children... As no special needs school won the random raffle... (she did delete it eventually after a few messages!) Anyway, I'm rambling, I'm just looking for a polite way to reject some of these requests without seeming heartless and I don't care about charity! Any ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Question about registering/licensing an international clothing line business in AUS Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:45 PM PST Hello, I'm currently in the process of setting up a clothing line which will originate from Australia however I'm obviously looking to do all my sales online and manufacture the clothes in America & Europe, meaning my main target market will be these regions. With that said, are there any steps I need to take to protect my brand from any trouble internationally. I'm aware of registering my business with Australia, but do I need to take extra steps if I am going to be selling internationally? I couldn't find anything online about this for the life of me so I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Desperate for Help/Advice....it's going to slip through my fingers if I can't get a handle on it. Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:38 PM PST If you don't nee/want the background, please skip to the questions below. Please dig out all the patience you use with working with other professionals. I don't mean to be vague, but I am in a very specific field. That said, Quickbooks is pointless for me, none of the client maintenance software is fit for what I (we) do, it is really unique, however necessary, and we have a government 'agreement' (contract guarantees payment and we are not) that is and will continue to be very profitable, if I can pull my stuff together. I (45F) have never identified myself as an entrepreneur (and don't consider myself one). I obtained several degrees and the highest is a Masters and then a certification in a Social Services field. After many years of struggle, this opportunity came along and I established my business 11 years ago. Because of health/family issues, the business did not really get going well until about 3-4 years ago. Now I have 5 contractors (with an additional 1-2 to be added for the next several years) working with clients, a CIO, my husband is the Asset Manager and I own/run the business (CEO/my own assistant/payroll/HR/Complaints department/purchasing/etc, etc). Oh and we use a CPA for taxes, etc. Until now, I have done the entire running of the company, dividing clients, training, and everything else you can imagine myself. Every time I try to delegate, it takes more time for me to train how to do it, get it done, fix mistakes, etc, so I just don't. It's happened. I had major surgery & now may have some other hospital stays. Some people really stepped up, some went rogue, and I'm reorganizing everything. My husband is some kind of saint. We are establishing a board this week, and my husband (who has been taking care of me, house, and business that I dictate) has truly convinced me that I need to let others just...DO. So, here I am, everything is behind and an utter disaster. Everyone is ready to help, NOW. I can't get my head above water to let them. My Questions:
I've squeezed my hands so tightly around this, that it is slipping through my fingers and I am losing all sense of a light at the end of a tunnel (or, it may be a train?). It doesn't help that this is the only source of income for my family, and some of those work for/with me too. Have I mentioned pressure? I have posted on financial boards and organization boards and am so very desperate for information... I'll answer any questions that I can. [link] [comments] |
Is the Apple small business financing the best way to get a slew of MacBooks? Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:28 PM PST Hiya, Starting a design studio and will need three $4k+ MacBooks as part of our startup costs. Is Apple small business financing as good as it sounds? UPDATE: I got a business opportunity, should I follow through? Posted: 24 Feb 2020 09:14 PM PST So basically we talked a bit, and by the stuff he said basically he was looking just for capital. I bring this up to light and he tries to convince himself its not like that. When I told him I was out since I didnt see myself doing anything of worth, He panicks and tells me I can be an investor completely off site, I put my money for 20% of the business. And if im still interested in the business i can still be involved with that percentage, and if im not when there is enough capital to pay me back, I can leave. He told me that other people interested in the business wanted 80% / 40% control of the business. Basically Im giving him a glorified loan, with the posibility that he does my fashion samples as gratitude. Since I dont know shit about business I dont know how good or bad this is as a first timer. My sis tells me 20% is too little, and the 40% the other investor offered is a more fair deal. Basically Im putting all the money for the first 4 months. Technically the business should start generating by then. The tailor is supposed to be getting a huge payout that should cover the money im putting in on the fourth month. (He is even giving me his current housing as an insurance in case this goes south... Wtf) I still dont know if i should follow through... The situation changed a lil, i dont have to be there and I can do whatever I want with my time, while technically generating a small revenue for me. But now i feel like im playing with this mans living. [link] [comments] |
[UK] How to recycle unwanted electronics / electrical items? Posted: 24 Feb 2020 02:10 PM PST I have a few items that I don't need or aren't working (though in the case of the latter, good parts can be pulled out, and cases reused). How do I go about disposing of them in a "green" way? I don't want to give them to charity because some just won't work, when they'd be better going to electronic tinkerers. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:18 AM PST The business is a lawn and turf company applying herbicides. There is about 180 accounts that get 6 treatments a year. Rough numbers are a gross of 70k a year with a relatively low overhead. Purchase price would include all equipment. Initial price point is $45,000. All the work could be managed by myself and wouldn't interfere with my current full time job. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Part 2 - Business Website Foundations - 9 Things After Installing Wordpress, Astra & Elementor Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:07 PM PST Hi everyone, Following directly after my previous tutorial where I showed you how to set up a professional website using Astra Starter themes, this video aims to help you get familiar with the moving parts of Wordpress, Astra and Elementor by setting up some foundational elements. Part 1 - Setting up a beautiful and professional business website using Astra Start Sites. This tutorial uses Cleaning Companies as an example but applies to most local businesses. Part 2 - 9 Things To Do After Installing Wordpress, Astra and Elementor Over the tutorial I go through steps like:
It's a fairly mundane tutorial and certainly doesn't cover too many topics that get me excited, but I think it is necessary for those just starting out and unfamiliar with the whole website side of things for their operation. There's a video for each in the links above if you prefer to learn that way. Hopefully in the upcomming videos I can talk about the more exciting aspects like capturing leads, email marketing, conversion optimization and how to track it, CRM and automation. If you have any questions feel free to reply here but I'll be most active on my Facebook group. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:43 PM PST I'm going to need a 4 door 4wd pickup for my day to day business operations. I've been looking at Toyota Tacomas in the 17-22k range and have been balking at buying a truck that already has a lot of milage on it. I just talked to a friend who suggested that I lease instead, and am mulling over if that's a good idea or not. Looking at the estimated payments it would be cheaper monthly to lease, and looking 5 years out I'd probably need to replace whatever I end up buying anyway. I would like to put a camper shell and graphics on the vehicle if possible, and I'm not sure if thats something I could do with a leased vehicle. It would also take away the stress of a potential breakdown. I've only ever had to purchase one car, it was a 98 forester and I've had it since 2012 and was planning to drive it until it quit for good. Any advice would be really appreciated, I'm not in a terrible rush but need something by the middle of next month. I love my old forester but can't in good conscience let it represent my business.
