How can I reach small businesses to offer Video services? What prevents you from using video?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:19 PM PST

Hey, I run a small video company I do animation, videography, editing, facebook ads, website video, you name it. I'm constantly changing my hustle around to get anyone to look at my reel: https://vimeo.com/342825342

Wondering if anyone can tell me what they need in a video, and what prevents them from purchasing video services!

    Thanks!

The right accounting software for my business?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 01:35 AM PST

I'm new to small business. I have been doing research on accounting software but am getting nowhere. Is there something out there that offers accounting as well as inventory management AND project management? By project management I mean a setup where I can enter the amount of time a project takes, materials used, etc. and see a baseline of cost vs. price. I really don't have time to sit down and make my own software right now. I will if I have to, but would prefer if someone else has already done it. TIA for any advice.

    How To Cold Pitch Someone…

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:25 PM PST

Many small business owners/founders/entrepreneurs use cold outreach for prospecting.

I get a lot of cold pitches on LinkedIn (and via email too).

Recently someone cold pitched me and I cordially and asked how it was working for them.

They leveled with me and said not great, so this is what I replied with…

Here is what I would do: grab a URL from a credible news outlet about why outsourcing software developers is a good idea or how to successfuly hire an outsourced software deveopler. Then I would send that URL plus the following style message in your own voice: "Hello, I see you run a software company and I found this article and I think it may interest you and your work. Hope it helps and have a great day." Then I would wait a week or two and followup about what they thought of the article to help me understand where they are at. Try it out and let me know how it goes.

    That last sentence is rhetorical.

    I know it works.

I have done it for years and more importantly, that is how real people communicate in real life.

    But how do you followup?

After cold contact, only one of a two things happen:

    1. They reply; or
    2. They do not reply.

In the first instance, you are now in a qualification style conversation.

In the second instance, you follow up with enough time for them to consume the URL and ask if they found it useful.

Only one of a two things happen:

    • They say "yes"; or
    • They say "no".

If they say "yes", you are now in a qualification style conversation.

If they say "no", you say "no problem" and now decide if you want to follow up with someone who potentially is not qualified.

My (24F) oldest brother (29M) is the last family member to join the family business, and he is already getting privileges over me. He hasn't even started yet.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:25 AM PST

My father's recent business has taken off, and so he wants all of his children to be on board. I have been working there for over 1.5 years, and my older brother has been working with him from the start. Now my father has been trying to recruit my oldest brother to quit his job and come work with us. My brother is great to work with on a business level, however on a familial level he is garbage. The relationship between him, my middle brother and I has been horrible, especially me and him.

Anyways, my father wants to get him to work with us, and has said he will do whatever it takes to get him. This is a problem, because my older brother doesn't want me involved in any discussions. This includes him joining, how much he'd get paid, ect. There are a few reasons why I'm not okay with this.

    1. I was told all the siblings would be treated equally. This means that all our input would be equally important, and we should all have the same level of say.
    2. I was also told that our salaries and payment would be layed out for all of us to see and know. We would be paid following certain rules like experience, time with the company, unique skill, etc. ( Just like every other job?)
    3. My middle brother gave me the impression that he would support me in these basic rules. I needed this cause 3 against 1 isn't going to work in my favour.

I was told I would be making 50,000 out of school (which I'm told I should be happy about, which I mean it's not a bad salary at all) after working for what would then be 2 yrs at the company. My oldest brother is being offered 2.5 times the salary to start out in the business and industry. Now, if he was making 90,000 and me 50,000 like I thought, I'd have no problem with that. But to just raise his salary willy nilly (and also raising my other brother's salary to match) and keeping mine the same is not fair.

Last night when both brothers and my father were having a meeting, I was told to leave and close the door. Instead, I stayed in the doorway refusing to go. I told them I don't see why I can't be apart of this conversation, to which everyone in the room laughed at. I told everyone, if I'm not included in these conversations, it is the difference between me being a part of this company and leaving. My middle brother than told me I don't have the right to be in all conversations, which I don't understand. If it's between the middle brother and my father, fine. If it's my oldest brother and father, fine. But I should NEVER be the one singled out.

I don't know how to get my point across, because there is no reason for me to be excluded or not benefit from this company like everyone else because they don't see me as an equal. But I also don't want to bring this up constantly, that's not a good environment to be in. Suggestions?

Not sure where to go from here

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:48 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I work at a dog daycare with my girlfriend, and we decided to start up a weekly poop scooping service.

We set up our website, set out business cards at 12+ local dog places of business, and set up a stand at our daycare.

I made an advertisement on Nextdoor, offering a one time scoop for free. that got a lot of views and clicks, but not much traction.

My boss made a nice, long post about my service on the daycare's facebook today, and it got loads of likes, but still not much traction.

So I guess my question is:

Where do I go from here in terms of marketing?

Any tips on effective methods of advertisement for small service businesses?

I was wondering if I got some big car magnets for the side of my car and parked at the entrance to our store, that may stir up some curiosity? Maybe I should design some nice brochures with all of our pricing, features, and benefits displayed in it, and set them up front of the day care.

Not sure, what do you guys think is a good next step?

Any feedback is very much appreciated! Ask any questions.

Small family run business adds a fresh look to their website

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 01:17 AM PST

Time has certainly flown at Oak Furniture House, with the prospect of exciting developments on the horizon we've been thinking about our journey since the business began over a decade ago. Things started on a very small scale back in 2006 when Director and his family began trading out of a small container in Didcot. Things really got moving in 2008 when the business began to expand, with the website launch in 2010.

Oak Furniture House remains a flourishing family-run business and is going from strength to strength. In October of 2015 we opened our first showroom and late 2019 a brand new website was launched! https://www.oakfurniturehouse.co.uk/

This new site has added a much needed update to the design and now offers much more for our customers.

If I incorporate a company in one state while living in another, can I incorporate another company in that state I don't live in using my old company as the registered agent?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:59 PM PST

If I incorporate a company in one state while living in another, can I incorporate another company in that state I don't live in using my old company as the registered agent?

In English now: I incorporate the C-Corporation "A Corp." in Delaware while living in California using a registered agent. Would I be able to make another Delaware C-Corporation, say, "V Corp." using the old one as a registered agent? This is assuming I don't have a physical address in Delaware but a registered agent with a Delaware address.

    Registering Business

Hi, I have been operating my online business for 3 years as a sole proprietor and paying my taxes at the end of the year. I never registered my business with my state (not sure if I need to) and was wondering if I can put my business established in 2017 since I been paying taxes with this business. I filed jointly since my husband has a W2 if that helps.

Need advice on building a team

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:03 PM PST

I have been working for a small wedding videography business for 7 years. I have been the only (consistent) full time employee (other than the owner) for 6 of the 7.

Before taking off for the holidays, the owner and I started talking and he told me that he was considering putting me in charge of growing our team and over seeing all new employees.

We have A LOT of business that we have to turn down because of lack of employees.

Since we returned last week, he hasn't mentioned it again, which tells me he is patiently waiting for me to take action and show him I am willing and able to take control of that side of the business.

With all of that said, what are some ways to pursue new employees? We use zip recruiter, indeed, and most of the online job boards and have had little to no luck in finding a reliable employee. Once the new employees have joined the team, what are some ways to make them buy in to who we are as a company?

Our main issues with last employees have been: 1.) the owner is impatient.. the weekly hours for a full time employee are all spent editing- he tends to move on from employees if they don't show a strong ability to retain what we are showing them, or if they aren't efficient editors within 4-6 months. 2.) new employees can't handle the schedule. 9 hrs a day editing gets very lonely and repetitive. Most say they want to do it, until they start doing it.

The owner is giving me this responsibility because he is a micro manager- he tends to bump heads with new employees because he is very demanding. I am more of a people person, more patient, and have been in the shoes of the untrained new employee at our company.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Reseller Certification

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:54 PM PST

I sell items on my eCommerce website and this year I received a notice from one of my vendors asking me to upload my Reseller Certificate because they are not charging me sales tax. I have been to an accountant a couple of times and my accountant never mentioned me having a reseller certificate. Currently, I do my own taxes because it's pretty straightforward.

Does anybody know what this is?

    Should I Buy? x-post from r/laundromats

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:43 PM PST

Laundromat near my main business is for sale. Purchase price is $175k. My wife has prior Laundromat experience and is onboard to manage it part time.

Annual sales are $235k with a profit of $60k. Payroll is claimed to be $54k / year for 2 FTES covering 2 shifts a day. I need to verify that as it seems extremely low for this area.

61% self serve, 38% from Wash and Fold.

2FTEs covering 2 shifts a day, doors are electric lock automatic. All machines fully owned including 2 vending machines.

Lease is 5 years total with 5 left. Landlord is unwilling to go more than 5 at a clip. Strip mall has one vacancy currently and some anchor tenants.

I guess I am looking for the yay or nay from the community!

Has anyone ever been involved in a business dispute?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:04 PM PST

Like a stiff on a bill, a relationship gone sour between partners/employees, or some other disagreement that led to a potentially legal dispute - whether it is ongoing or resolved.

I'm working on a show for a fairly popular network and we are testing the concept of a business dispute show. It is completely professional and WILL NOT AIR. Participants will be compensated $$$ :)

I understand skepticism and the expected legal concerns and would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

    Thank you in advance!

Any accountants that started their own business?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:30 PM PST

I am getting ready to start a job as a public accountant, and I already know I will hate it. I only took it because it was easy to get with an accounting degree. I would have preferred something more along the lines of product dev and product management at a CPG company. But even then, I still intended starting my own consumer-facing company later.

The primary motivation is having grown up in a family that runs a rather large business, think 1500 employees, and what the success has allowed them to do. I am sure some will say just go into the family business but there is too much nepotism and politics, I have seen it destroy my fathe'rs relationship with my uncle.

So I am curious what some of you may have gotten into, and what advantages you feel you have as an accountant?

Looking for suggestions for check-in system (iOS app) for large upcoming conference

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:27 PM PST

Hi all - hoping someone could help me with something I'm looking for.

In the next few months I'm planning a large user conference where I'll be managing our "Genius Bar" where our users will be coming for help on anything they need with our software. Historically, we've had lines as many as 50 people long, and I'd like to optimize the process where I could get their name, phone number and topic of their issue and then when that specialist is available, be able to send them a text to come back to the Genius Bar.

I feel like it's simple enough, but I haven't been able to find anything that works for what I'm looking for. Most of what I've found so far are apps that have preset appointments where I can check people in for their appointments, but what I'm expecting is going to be 100% walk-ins for our event.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

First time posting. Looking for advice

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:53 PM PST

Hello everyone. I've been lurking around for a while, taking in as much knowledge as I can. Now I would like to reach out for advice.

I am looking to become a first time business owners and purchase a restaurant that's been operating for over 35 years. It gone through one ownership change about 10 years ago. Since then the quality of the product and service has decreased. I actually worked at this very restaurant for around 8 years with the original owners and saw the amount of business it's capable of. There is great potential for bringing it back to its former glory.

The person I'm working with in order to broker the deal and help me get investments suggested that I write out a 10 year business plan to lay out what my goals will be. Problem is that I'm having trouble with the more long term goals. Everything up to 5 years I have a good idea of what I want to accomplish. I would try and give revenue projections, but I have yet to see the current financials so mapping projecting is difficult.

So I guess my question is, what should I write for the latter stages of the plan? I don't want to seem like I have no direction but I don't want to add seemingly drastic changes, such as a second location, when that's not really what I'm out to accomplish.

I appreciate any guidance you can give. Thank you
