Actively avoiding bringing my manager on sales calls

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:46 AM PST

Has anyone else been in this position and have advice?

Once upon a time, my manager was in my position. He is a very aggressive sales person with horrible people skills. I honestly don't know how he became a manager. The customers I have still remember him. Most of them (the customers) hated my manager when he was an AM. When I first got hired, he went with me on a sales call. He was super aggressive to the customer, and it almost ruined my chance at a huge sale. Since then, I have been working tirelessly to gain the trust of this customer back. It has been 8 months of working with her to finally have her invite me to visit again.

Now my manager is telling me to schedule more sales calls for him to come with me on. I have been trying to avoid this for months. Any advice for how to not have him ruin my relationships with customers?

How do you not let upset customers get to you?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:08 PM PST

I work for a fast growing SaaS company and I just moved into an AE position 3 months ago. I had a customer reach back out after about 2 weeks of signing up for a year, claiming I was extremely dishonest and that he was misled. He wants to cancel (even though he signed up for the year).

I don't feel like I was dishonest about anything and my manager was even on some of our calls. It still really got to me and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Even now, as I'm at home, my mind is racing.

How do you manage this type of situation and not dwell on it?

My manager quit and I’m at a loss

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:02 AM PST

So I came back for the new year with so much passion, enthusiasm and ready to tear 2020 apart, and then on Monday my sales manager told me he's leaving. He's handed in his notice and finishes up in 2 weeks. Fortunately he's not going to a competitor or anything so he's still around to tie up loose ends and to do handovers. I literally owe my career to this guy, I was "treading water" for years but in the last 2 years I've learned so much from him and have developed to become a proper senior sales guy but I'm still not the finished article.

I've been deflated since he told us the news and literally haven't even had the energy or desire to make a single cold call since, how do I get out of this slump? Is it just a matter of time?

Questions about starting with cold calling (as a business owner)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:56 AM PST

Okay guys, I know that some of you will be mad at me but I know nothing about cold calling :(

So, we are a Web development and marketing agency (from Croatia), and we would like to try to get some clients by cold calling.Probably that person will work remote from home... But my question is what equipment should we buy to him?

    1. How many calls should beginner make per day?
    2. If we buy them a mobile phone to make calls, what app do you recommend to us for tracking them?
    3. What info of potential clients should we give to that salesperson? We will give him/her a telephone number, email, website, company name, owner name if available... is there anything else I've missed?
    4. Do salesperson needs to make a small research on each company before calling them? And what that research should contain?

Please give me any tip you can.Thank you!

    Should I job-hop?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:29 AM PST

I have been working in two fields for the last several years sales part time (home improvement) in the morning and field repair full time at night. I Love sales and am beginning to hate repair work. However I just started a new position for a company that is the Apple or Microsoft of the repair industry. I have just been offered another entry level sales position (base plus commission $80k) but if I leave now I burn a lot of bridges. Is job-hopping worth the risk.

    How to become the best

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:16 PM PST

    Hey there,

I (27) need some tips. I started a job in sales last week, we sell telecom and everything is comission based. When I applied and went to the interview, the manager said I have to talk more and open up but saw big potential in me.

So I just finished my 5th day there and the overall opinion of me from him and my mentor (great guys, patient and overall nice) was that they're impressed with how fast I learn but they'd like me to talk more to the customers. Talk as in 'talk like they're your friends, make a joke here and there and try to sell in between'.

How do I do that? I'm social and not afraid of people yet when I'm in front of customers I kinda shut down, I don't have the confidence yet to just talk about our products and try to sell something whilst I still don't know the products good enough and inbetween also work with 3 programs to make sure everything is done right.

HOW do you talk to strangers like they're your friends or people you'd like to know whilst trying to sell them something in a non-obvious way?

Is it time to find a new job?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:09 PM PST

The sales structure at my current company is very unorganized. We have a lot of overlap between reps which leads to many conflicts.

We have a field sales team, 2 sales offices, and an online sales office. The sales offices can call on any accounts throughout the US. The field sales have their own territories. The online team processes orders online, try to build up those accounts and also prospects nationwide. Everyone has different CRM's, that's one of the reasons people step on each other's toes.

We don't have SDR's/BDR's. The head manager feels that would make it too easy for the field team and he wants them to be prospecting too.

I work out of one of the offices. We can fly out to any customer, if the deal is clearly worth the travel. However, this job is primarily whale hunting. You either catch a huge account or you don't. I've had to defend some of my key target accounts from the online team multiple times. I've been here for 14 months.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Path to Pharmaceutical Sales

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:59 AM PST

My goal is to eventually become a pharmaceutical sales representative. I recently graduated with a B.S. in Biology and am interested in starting a career in sales.

I notice on most of the jobs I've been looking at that 1 year of b2b is required, and am wondering if any b2b sales job is sufficient or if there is specific b2b sales experience that will help further strengthen my resume for pharmaceutical sales compared to others.

Also any other advice from pharmaceutical reps or other sales people? I also plan to complete the CNPR program.

    Performance manage... or fire

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:34 AM PST

MSP/IT Services. 30 staff. We have a small commercial team, mostly dealing with existing customers or inbound leads. This has driven the majority of our growth. Most outbound sales have been undertaken by me (MD).

Prospecting and outbound calling is a relatively new concept for our business - but necessary to achieve our desired growth trajectory.

We recently hired a seasoned sales professional who seemed to check out - but - has not lived up to expectations.

Poor technical knowledge, limited use/experience of CRM/Systems, no experience of LinkedIn, lead qualification poor, etc. Very confident and bullish - but not much else.

The goal was to prospect, identify leads, qualify and set up meetings with our pre-sales teams/account execs.

The few meetings that have been organised are poorly qualified and when our pre-sales techs attend, the prospect looks very confused and unsure why we are there.

These concerns have been raised formally - and acknowledged. But they're now blaming a lack of brochures, we need more print, etc. they don't need to qualify or use our CRM system.

So the question is... do I recommend we performance manage, train and invest time - or - just call it quits?

Vets of /r/sales, is there an easy way to tell if a SDR/AE approach or territory rep approach is better?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:17 AM PST

I'm trying to scale a team that sells a highly technical solution B2G. 14-20month cycle. $120k - $250 avg deal.

The SDR/AE approach is working, within our budget, but honestly I feel like we could be doing better. Facetime with clients almost doubles our closing rate, but the travel really bites into cash-flow; especially with such a long cycle.

The SDR/AE team is only 4 people at the moment, but it's time to scale. I can't get the idea of hiring a bunch of local reps out of my head though. Having someone manage the territory would really give us the ability to make the face-time connections we need in certain markets.

With that said, we can literally pay reps 50k CAD here... so for the price of a US rep, I can have 2 SDR's and an AE.

Anyone have experience building a team/scaling? Maybe you can nudge me in the direction of a book or a case study?

Is it weird to go around to car dealerships and drop off your resume?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 09:41 AM PST

So I've been trying to break into car sales lately, just as a foot in the door.

I've been checking online and seeing who is hiring, and then going and dropping my resume off while asking to speak to the sales manager.

I keep getting weird looks, people asking who I am and what I want, and just kind of treated weird in general.

I'm dressed fairly nice, in khakis with a dress shirt and a blazer. Not tucked in or a tie or anything, but I'd say business casual. I am polite and respectful.

I thought this would be better than being 1 out of hundreds of resumes on a screen, and the sales/hiring manager could put a face to the resume. But so far, everyone is just kinda being a prick and shoving me out the door. Even car dealerships where they say in the ad "walk in applicants welcome"

Help with simple phone system for high volume outbound cold calls

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 09:00 AM PST

Morning Salesmen and Saleswoman. I would like some suggestions on how to setup a simple and effective phone system. Basically be as free as possible. I don't mind paying for better solution just right now it is only me and maybe 2 other guys so I want to keep it simple and streamlined. I get lists of leads skiptraced, they usually have 3-6 numbers for each lead. and I want to call between 60-100 leads a day, or around 300 dials.

My current system was, using google voice on the PC, and just copy and past numbers in then dial, much faster than dialing by hand, it has a local area code (calling local leads) and can accept incoming calls while I am calling.

But yesterday my google voice was suspended, I can get incoming calls but cannot call out. I can call with my personal phone, but the area code is out of area. I can make multiple google voice numbers and switch them, but I feel that solution is temporary.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a solution where:

    1) i can make calls from the computer/avoid dialing by hand

    2) easy to use, can scale(high volume and wont get flagged/suspended/blocked), and relatively cheap or free.

    Thanks in advance.

    SQUARE3 Scam?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:28 AM PST

Hello all, I've been apart of this subreddit for a while now. Here's some background. I'm 20 worked for Verizon authorized retail seller for about 4 months (rarely hit quotas/very slow suburb area). Blah blah end up working my regular salary job of 13$ and hour. Not bad since I don't do much and is an office job.

Now here for my dilema. I have about 30 credits in college (will go back to school soon). And a coding certificate from Rutgers. I feel confident I can get more then 13.

So I applied for SQUARE3 a marketing company, seemed legit. Had an interview the day after I applied, and then the second interview the day after.

Now they are saying that they are international and hold accounts with sprint, Verizon, etc. but I can't seem to find that anywhere online.

Not only that but I would be walking the streets trying to convince people to switch over to what ever campaign they are running. And commission is 240-360 a sale? Averaging one sale a day.

Seems a little hard to believe? Please if you have any advice I'll be around all day thinking if I should make the love or not.

    Thank you

    Brian Burns Training Courses

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:15 AM PST

Does anyone have any experience with the courses offered by Brian Burns, the host of the Brutal Truth About Sales podcast? I was interested in his courses because I listen to his podcast which I find very enlightening.

A friend of mine has the "Closing the Complex Sale" course and said it's nothing more than learning how to mindmap your sales process.

    Any thoughts from anyone?

Sales territory based on counties? Here's a free tool to show what county you are CURRENTLY in -- on Google Maps

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:48 AM PST

If you have a sales territory based on counties and are on a sales road trip, here's a free tool on Google Maps that will quickly answer What County Am I In?

(In addition to showing the county lines, you can also optionally show city limits, townships, etc. with the options in the lower left of the map).

    Hope it helps!

    Sales career advice

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:38 AM PST

Hey the best sellers on the planet! I (22)need your vision to foresee future opportunities.

Ill first tell a bit about myself, and afterwards will point specific questions:

I have been selling electric appliances since 2 month ago. My communication with customers is getting better every day. I love to learn, to challenge my self and build valuable bonds with buyers. Besides this, I love humor, books, languages, sciece, music and dancing salsa. I served in a reapectful unit in military before and studied well in highschool.

I am in crossroads, since I planed originally to study a major in mechanic engineering. Consequently, I will leave my current job on March to travel and attend a pre semester course

Is there a way to mix both? How? Is it possible to be involved in sales with an engeneering degree? Tnx!

Sister wants my commission, says I “Stole” it from her

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

So as a backstory I (20 M) work with my sister (21) at a cell phone store, the store is commission based, and it's for a large carrier. When I got the job I was super happy and since I'm not super hard on commission and the hourly is enough to support myself while in school (11.50/HR) I was never the type to push for a surplus of commission and that's not to say not hit my goals but I had no need to try and hit 2k-3K in commission or anything like that. My manager has a thing where if you have a pitch and you achieve everything but the sale he or another rep will use your commission codes (so he says) and do the entire transaction for you when you're not there and you still get paid out for it. Rewind to yesterday when my sister had pitched to sell to a customer a few days before and they came in ready to activate. My sister gave them her business card and they tried to contact her hours before they came in with no response, I called her three times and still nothing, So I shot a text "hey urgent please answer " still nothing. Called my manager at least 4 times (promotional details are so specific I wanted to make sure I did everything the right way) and asked for his advice and he said advise the customer that we are commission based and basically breakdown that she helped you but still go though with it because that helps our store regardless and the customers still wanted to activate with me. At this point the sale is pretty much over and if you know anything about phones it can take hours to actually be completely done with the customer because they want to transfer all the information between phones successfully at the location before leaving and as you can imagine problems do tend to arise like messed up back ups, text messages and Momentos not coming over ETC. So anyways about 1 and 1/2 hours into the transaction she calls back pissed that she's not getting credit for the sale. We talk it out and she says whatever it's fine basically. The most frustrating thing is it took up 3 1/2 hours of MY time, ample customers came in that I COULDNT sell because I was working on the sale, and she wanted 100% of the commission for it. Fast forward to today when she sees how much money was made on the sale, she demands some of MY commission out of MY customers for a "trade" since I "stole" her revenue and that the manager advised her that he told me I could use her codes and still give her the sale at any point that day. He does this often and plays both sides as to avoid conflict because he has to be liked. I knew it was a lie but I didn't know my sister would act like this over 100$ in commission and she says that now she will refuse to teamsell and she's going to become a shark. Should I take this with a grain of salt? Was I naive to think that family could work in sales together without animosity or a super competitive nature? It sucks but I know I can't or won't back down but how should I carry MYself if these are the actions of my manager and my sister? (#2 of the store). Any thoughts or insight would be really helpful, thanks a ton.

TLDR- Sister didn't do a sale demands that I pay for it, manager lies to mediate.

Unethical to use other job offers just to get a raise at your current job?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:17 PM PST

    I'll keep it short.

    • Thought my current gig was going in the shitter
    • Went to seek out other opportunities and got offers with better base pay but total compensation will be similar because commission is lower
    • Turns out current gig is going to be fine

Should I still ask for a base raise even though I have no intention of leaving? The raise at new company in base pay is 30% more than what I make now. If current company can come anywhere close or give me a raise at all I can easily earn more at current role than new role.

    Thanks for the feedback.
