Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:42 PM PST I have yet again been fooled by a job offer. My manager (also hiring) gave me a lovely verbal list of benefits I will receive. I get the contract and it said these benefits are according to company policy, which the hiring manager previous elaborated. Three weeks later and things are shifting... It's not unlimited sick, it's 40 hours. Do I even get my Christmas bonus? Any advice on how to fix this without looking for another job??? [link] [comments] |
The Key Skills Required Becoming a Successful Business Consultant Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:26 AM PST You may have noticed that the consulting industry is full of high performers from top schools with great grades and interesting work experience. So, what does it take to succeed in such a competitive industry among the best of the best? From my experience, there are a number of qualities that top performers adopt that are much more important than a golden resume. Whether you've just started a consulting job or are considering it as a career path, think about how you can develop the following qualities that will help you go from being a good consultant to a great one. Structured thought process: Many of the problems faced by firms are abstract problems. A consultant needs to break that ambiguous problem down into smaller and solvable problems in a structured manner. This requires the ability to absorb any abstract problem, regardless of the industry, and apply a structure to it. Analytical mind: A consultant needs to be good at analyzing data. He or she should be able to not just extract the relevant information from the mammoth amount of data available, but also be able to produce a specific insight using that information. Ability to manage working relationships: Consulting is a very client-focused business, and as such requires a large amount of relationship building with the client. A consultant should be able to establish a good working relationship with the client based on credibility. Ability to handle stress: There might be a few days when the work involves long hours and stress. A consultant should be prepared to handle that stress and be able to deliver good quality work within the timelines. Ability to work in a team: Consulting is a team work, and consultants spend most of the time with their teams. The final deliverable to the client would involve the efforts of all members in the team. Ability to learn fast: The learning curve in consulting is very steep. One needs to be able to quickly grasp new concepts - be it industry knowledge or knowledge of software tools. Being a "Safe Pair Of Hands": This essentially means that you will do exactly what you said you were going to do, when you said you were going to do it. Sounds simple, but it's the number one quality needed to build trust and credibility among your team and your clients. For example, in the beginning of your career, your team will lean on you for support in the more rote areas of consulting work, such as creating PowerPoint decks, taking notes, and organizing projects, and it's important for you to be able to do these tasks without errors or much oversight from your manager. Make sure you keep your promises, be consistent in your quality, and master the basic skills in Excel and PowerPoint. The more trust you build early on, the more opportunities you will be given in the future. Being The "Go-To" For Something: During your first few years of consulting, you'll likely be floating between industries, areas, and clients. Despite your broad experiences, it's a good idea to start developing a skill that allows you to differentiate yourself from all your rock star peers. While being a jack-of-all Microsoft trades (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is definitely needed, the consultants who perform best always have an area that they truly excel in—one that's in demand and that nobody else seems to have. Whether that's advanced financial modeling, communications skills, or a particularly deep knowledge in an industry, take the time to find out what you can become the go-to person for. Not Being Afraid To Ask (Good) Questions: Asking questions is at the core of how a consultant works, so much so that there are times when I feel like Sherlock Holmes! Questions help ensure you understand what you are being asked to do and the issues your client is facing, and they can also help you to demonstrate your understanding. Never be afraid to ask for clarification—it's better than doing something wrong. Even if you don't have a question to ask, restating what you've been told to clarify your understanding can inspire confidence with your manager or client. A few years in consulting can really polish a person. A consultant always needs to be ahead of the curve. He or she needs to work with the top management of big firms, and hence needs to think strategically like a CEO. [link] [comments] |
Any one with a local service business doing $200k+ have any advice for outbound propsecting? Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:36 PM PST I have a commercial cleaning business that has grown nicely over the past 3 years. We now are doing $350k. However, all growth has been 100% from Google SEM and also people just noticing my Google My Business. The steady and slow growth has been nice as it has allowed me to learn the business at a nice pace and get the back end of my business structured nicely. But now I am ready to start putting a bigger dent in the market. I am looking for sales advice from someone who either is, or has been, in my shoes. I have a good sales guy on my team who can close. I really just need a stronger lead flow. Google ads has always brought in some leads, but very low volume. Any advice would be great! [link] [comments] |

Meat Product Labeling Advice Needed Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:04 PM PST Hi everyone! I'm looking for a little bit of help if there is anyone here willing to give me a bit of advice regarding a B2C food retail business. We have a product we are trying to bring to market, direct to consumer through e-commerce. After speaking to someone from the USDA, I was informed we do not need an inspector but we do need proper labeling. My question is, is anyone familiar with labeling of frozen meat products? What is required? Our recipe is kind of a secret when it comes to the spices and quantities, so what exactly are my limitations on keeping the recipe secret while still being compliant. Maybe someone can point me to a source where I clean read more about this. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Dec 2019 03:18 PM PST The company I work for has 5,000+ employees. Many of them are members of various outside organizations e.g., government agencies, municipalities, corporation commission, etc. It's a large utility company. The problem is that most employees are unaware of which other employees are affiliated with specific organizations and it's causing overspending. I'm tasked with gathering and compiling this data so that employees can search for other employee memberships and utilize their connections/discounts. I don't know where to start. I figured starting near the top and working down makes the most sense, but where do I store the information, how do I organize it, what's the best way to maintain it, and how can I be sure I didn't miss anyone/memberships? I've searched all over the internet, but can't seem to narrow what I need to find desirable results. Any help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |

I'm looking for feedback about the newsletter, things I can do better, include, not include, etc. For context the newsletter is focusing on anything entrepreneurs, founders, startups... this particular newsletter is about mental health/wellness and how it relates to entrepreneurs. https://milestonehackers.substack.com/p/mental-wellness-for-entrepreneurs This isn't intended to be self-promotion, just feedback on the item mentioned above. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

What is the biggest obstacles in making video to promote your business? Posted: 06 Dec 2019 07:16 AM PST I would imagine as business owners you would love to be making more videos to promote your business. But what are your biggest challenges around actually making that happen? I will start the conversation off. To get a video company in to highlight what we do is expensive and a big commitment upfront. Will I get the investment back and how do I measure that in terms of revenue, not video views? We work in the B2b space so I'm not expecting any viral sharing to be happening that's for sure. Most videos are a one-off project, ongoing video production is an even bigger commitment with my same levels of concern. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:53 AM PST I was reading about how movies make money from ticket sales and I read that the longer a movie is in theaters, the less percentage of profit the studio makes and the more the theatre takes but I don't understand why the percentage changes over time?
