Business failed 4 months ago. $76,000 in debt and 23 years old

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:29 PM PST

I need some help/advice and support. I'm 23. I built a big business running cold email campaigns for digital marketing agency's over the last three years and it all came tumbling down in August. The machine learning that google implemented this past winter made cold emailing almost impossible.

At the height this past spring we were signing 12 to 15 clients a month and bringing in up to $35,000 a month. I had 5 employees at one time.

    But, I lost everything.

I live with my parents and am in my last semester of college. I graduate next Saturday

But, the failed business left me with $76,000 in debt (I had a money back guarantee based on results and had to refund 20 Clients $2,600 each.

I haven't had a source of income since July. I'm just so bogged down. I literally owe everyone money - $5,500 to my college, the $5,600 to the IRS, $2,300 to the state, $21,000 Kabbage (the company I got a loan for the business from to cover refunds and payroll in the final months), and a $44,000 negative PayPal balance

I live hand to mouth on sporadic bits of income here and there from selling email lists to agency owners. I'm talking $300 to $500 a month.

My payments are $1,300 a month total to Kabbage, the IRS, and the state. I owe PayPal $44,000 as a negative balance but they haven't sent it to collections yet, but when they do that will be another monthly payment plan.

    It's disheartening

I go from good, "normal" days where I feel like this debt will be easy to pay off and don't feel worried to days like today where it's crushing me and I get letters from the state about missed payments.

My parents don't know about the debt. There's nothing they could do financially if they wanted to. Telling them would make things ten times worse.

I wait home all day and wait for the mail to come so I can intercept anything. Today I intercepted two collections letters from the state.

I've spent the last months taking 18 credits (6 classes) and trying to build a new business setting up chatbots and running ad campaigns for restaurants but I haven't made a single sale.

I need help. I need hope

CRM that can track and forecast recurring revenue ??

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 02:53 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for something I would have thought is fairly straight forward. Trying to find a CRM that can do the following:

    • Create products or deals that are recurring on a monthly basis for a fix interval of time. E.g. n dollars for n moths

    • Forecast my 'pipeline' based on current opportunities or deals

Really struggling to find a CRM that has these features.

How To Hook Up With Startups

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 02:26 PM PST

    Hi Folks,

I am a UX researcher wanting to find a paying job with startups. If I had my choice I would love to work in EdTech. But, my most immediate need is getting that first paying job instead of constantly volunteering my time with non-profits for getting experience.

Where can I find startups looking to hire? Both online and in person?

    Thanks!

    Julie

Question on Dissolution of Failed Startup

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:13 PM PST

I started a Delaware C-Corp in 2018 (through Gust Launch) which also made it a foreign corp in California where i lived and it went literally no where with $0 assets, $25k expenses, a checking account and credit card with nothing left on it. I've gone ahead and submitted the dissolution of the corporation in Delaware and paid my $450 franchise fee for this year. What is the best course of action for me if the intent is to save as much money as possible from this?

If I intend to go ahead with a final tax return (not sure how much it'll cost to simply say $0 income) + paying the $800 franchise fee for california i'm going to be out quite a bit of money. However, if I submit the final tax return without franchise fee or not even bother then it'll eventually go to suspended status and my understanding is i'm not held personally accountable for this and they can't actually come after me. I know this isn't the 'correct' way to go but it is a viable way if i'm sitting here low on cash just trying to make it through the holiday season.

    Does anyone have any advice?

China ends subsidizing electric cars. How will this impact the EV startup community?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:57 PM PST

Since China ended its subsidies of EVs in June, sales have decreased close to 30%. But to meet energy requirements, China's car producers will have to push out EVs even if they lose money. China is the world's largest EV market. Any ideas as to how this will impact the EV market in China and beyond?

Is Google no longer a startup? It's new management setup seems to confirm this.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:42 PM PST

Driverless cars, wearable computers and life projects - is the era of crazy projects at Google (or Alphabet) over? Does the appointment of Sundar Pichai as CEO mean that Alphabet will no longer experiment with moonshot projects and just stick to advertising? How will this affect Google's venture fund?

Best way to file a Delaware C Corp?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 02:23 PM PST

My partner and I are making a mobile application and have been working full time for the last 1.5 years. We have recently received a $10k investment from an individual and have verbal commitments for another $20k. We realize that we now need to make our company official before we proceed.

Based on the research I have done, I believe a C Corp is better suited for us than an LLC or an S Corp.

I was hoping to get some advice from people who have recently done something similar, in order to find out the best service to do it through, the best time to do it, and anything else we should know. We do not want to leave anything to chance.

    Thanks!

What would starting a company to produce an app take? Brass tacks.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:20 PM PST

My friend and I have recently been talking about creating an app together and it's starting to get more and more serious. I'm an advertising major and he's computer science so we believe if we don't get off on our egos we can make and market something really great. If we volunteer our time only what other expenses would there be? I know there's got to be like a list of required stuff you NEED out there and I'm just wondering how much it would take out of pocket. Anything at all helps appreciate you guys so much

    Create small software startup

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:09 PM PST

    Hi

I recently developed two services which can help IT and R&D in they work. I would like to know how to offer these services for other companies? What are the first steps you can suggest?

I checked a lot of sources and it says that I need to build business model etc...

But firstly I would like to know how many companies need to have it and if I can find some partners who already have the experience to run such projects and can say if it can be successful or not

Maybe there are some platforms where I can post my services and discuss them with professionals?

What was fundraising like during the 2008 recession?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:56 PM PST

Was anyone here running a VC-backed startup during the 2008-2011ish recession? What was raising money like during those years compared to before and after? I'm imagining it was harder, but how much harder?

Some context: I'm in the early stages of a project and would likely be doing at least some fundraising. There's a lot of talk about the VC bubble bursting among VCs I've been talking to (not about this project), especially as the public markets become more skeptical of tech IPOs. In light of that possibility, I'm trying to figure out if it's a horrible idea to even pursue something that would likely require at least some professional investment down the road (in the next few years).

    Create IT consulting startup

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:20 PM PST

    Hi

Last 7 years I am working in the same IT area and my current position is a team lead of a team and PM. I realized that want to change something in my life and instead of working in some big company I want to create something own.

Since I am an expert in my IT area I think that consulting startup can be pretty good.

How I see it in highlight: 1. Create a plan for my business 2. Create a website where customers can see what I can offer and portfolio 3. Start using LinkedIn to find customers 4. Once I have few success stories - left current job and enjoy only my startup 5. Once I have a lot of customers - start hiring experts in this area to help me

What do you think? How is risky and hard to start such startup? What kind of recommendations can you give?

2 different niches, gotta pick 1!

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:55 AM PST

Hey guys, I am currently setting up my new shopify POD store and have a couple of store ideas. I like to create my own designs for products and my final 2 choices are:

    1. A popart store which has funky designs of my making plus personalised designs too for portraits on things like canvas and mugs. Its pretty general but this market is a bit underserved and is pretty popular. My popart style is almost cartoonish so it stands out more when I am advertising.
    2. A running store specialising in creative designs for leggings, running tees and other running apparel. I also want to design wall prints in my own designs related to running. Down the line I had an idea to do fun personalised portraits for people too as they are popular on instagram. Lots of selfies and race day pictures of runners. This niche is allot bigger, a bit more saturated and harder to come up on google search.

I was all set to go with the popart niche but after more research I had a feeling I should target a more tangible audience such as running which I am passionate about! What do you think? I need some advice from people in the know. :-)

    Startups?Sound Interesting

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:29 AM PST

Hi everyone, I am 16 years old and a beginner in the Startups world, though I am not starting off now in the entrepreneurial journey. I have a few questions for you.

First of all, I hope you can show me which are the main areas I should understand and study because I don't have a clue about the funding part and the rest of the starting phase Books, ways of learning, courses...

Considered that I have an idea, that from what I learnt in this subreddit doesn't have to be a breakthrough idea, should I first create my company set all up and then try to get investments or can I start directly with proposing the idea to investors?

    Looking for resources guidance

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:17 AM PST

Im in the US and work a regular day job. As a side hobby, I buy different things (Guitars, video games, toys) and fix em up (when applicable) and resale them

I've been doing this for years, but this year, it really took off. I set up an online shop for this and I'm seeing I sold close to $20k (through PayPal), though profit is minimal to none (since website/shipping/fees/ different expenses).

I realize I have no idea what I'm doing. Here are my questions.

    • my brand/business name isn't registered or anything. I literally started a IG and Twitter account and that's where I promote. Do I need to register this?

    • do i need to file taxes on this, even though profits have been minimal or none? How would I do this? I know nothing about taxes (American education). For my personal taxes, I literally do them on turbo tax. So I know absolutely nothing. This is really my big question. As I don't know if I need to register the name and file taxes under that, or I can do it under my personal finances. I also know nothing about registering names or anything like that.

    • since sales have increased a lot, I sometimes pay a friend to post stuff on the site, or ship stuff for me when work doesn't allow me to. It's usually a favor, or I take him out to lunch. Etc. Would this be an issue?

I can't emphasize enough how little I know.

I don't want to get in trouble with the IRS, So I want to do this as correct as possible.

I realize it's not anyone's job to educate me, so pointing me to some videos/resources would be greatly appreciated.

If you'd care to explain to me here, I'd appreciate that too

    Thank you.

    Which legal entity to choose?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:10 AM PST

    • I am American.
    • I live in Europe
    • I want my personal assets protected
    • I am the sole owner and operator
    • I would essentially operate digital nomad with no "headquarters". However, I'd work with companies from all over the world

Obviously, hiring a lawyer would be great, but I don't have the money, so I am coming to reddit.

I've looked into sole proprietorships, but I don't know how that works operating aborad and if my assets are protected and if a personal civil debt can be deducted from the business.

    I've also looked into LLC.

I've also looked into the Estonia E-residency program.

    Thoughts?

It’s been a week and I finished my pay modal. Just some questions

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 03:19 AM PST

So I've spent a week finalizing and finishing coding the payment module / features that I will be implementing into the live website next week. Last week I commented here for suggestions for a pricing start. People were suggesting higher prices as a start to test the waters. That's what I'm going with.

Unfortunately, as much as I would like to post an image showing the page I made; advertising is not allowed.

So I'm feeling pretty nervous because I will basically be suddenly limiting some functionality on the website and putting things behind a pay-gate subscription per month or year.

Features in offering: - Searching by item - unlimited suggestions from other users - early access to new content - no ads - [pro] badge beside usernames - displaying more in-depth information with new tools - auto refreshing data in user hub - opening external links within web app(it's a feature to open google maps within the app and find the location without having to go to google and look by yourself).

I'm offering all of that for $11.99/month or $60/year.

I have about 1000 daily users/guests and 3k followers on the Instagram page. This is for a web app idea I came up with and started working on over 2 years ago with my teachers help in college but only launched this year about 2/3 months ago.

I'm feeling real nervous about the reaction I will get next week once I make the pay model live. It would truly suck to get no subscribers / receive hate.

I can't use my competitors pricing because they aren't direct competitors in relation to what unique features in offering; they don't have them and that's what helps me stand out.

So if for instance no one subscribes, this either means what I'm offering is not enough to justify the value or does it mean the price is priced too high? I've asked friends irl if they would pay and they said yes but you know... that's friends.
