Young aspiring entrepreneur, I want to go into the sales business. Where do I start?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 09:03 AM PST

I am in high school and an aspiring entrepreneur. I have decided a career in Sales is what I want to pursue after college. My question is, what should I study in college to have the most successful career in Sales? I've heard all sorts of majors like business administration, marketing, communications, and even engineering. If I could get an outline on the smartest and best way to break into the sales business early and fast that would be greatly appreciated.

I have a dream goal of owning my own business and I've read that learning to sell is one of the most useful tools to achieve that goal.

The last month has been crazy. $2.5m

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 07:33 PM PST

I sell agricultural equipment, the last month has been wild. I have put approx 2.5million out, 1.5 of which has been in the last week.

Not sure why I am posting other then the flex, and no one else other then salespeople will quite understand. also my boss tends to not give any positivity boosts even with this type of performance.

To put it in perspective, the other three sales man have done approx the same amount combined in that same amount of time.

    Just feels good I guess.

Using Basic Cold Calling Scripts For Tinder Profile

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 11:06 AM PST

Hi All, 35 cold calls today without talking to a single DM, so I need a break. I write up how I used basic cold calling scripts to improve my tinder matches.

First the numbers, i dont have official numbers. All I can say is I notice that for each day I swiped before I changed my profile, I would get a match or two maybe 25% of the time. So my results were pitiful. On top of that, the matches I would get was not what I am looking for. I would give the average match a 3 to 4 out of 10.

Since the change, I expect to get 6-7 matches per day swiped. The quality has increased, where each day 1 or 2 I would consider 7 or 8. I didn't change my pictures or anything like that. Just updated my profile section

The profile section is pitch. Some people are going to swipe left or right not matter what. The profile catches the "sideliners". I got that from Derek Halpem.

I needed to know my customer. This was easy, since my customer is the type of girl I am attracted to. What does every girl want? She wants to feel good and be confident. So everything in my pitch keeps that in mind.

I am looking for someone unique. Not only does she know how to have fun, she is independently driven. She knows who she is, and part of her is bad. A risk taker. She grabs life and doesn't wait but attacks. She knows what she wants

This is my qualifier. I start the profile with "what I am looking for". Even though it is what "I" am looking for, really what it is is what my ideal women wants to see in herself. I want her to read it and see the best of herself, I want her to qualify herself within what I want. Line by line, she answers "yes, thats me. I am fun and driven. Yes, Im a bad bitch and i know that. God dam right I attack and know what I want".

We only get so many trips around the sun, don't settle for less

This is my pain point. The women who I want to attract has been through a few relationships. She feels like she is getting older and her clock is ticking, and she needs to make a move. At the same time, she won't settle. Thats their challenge, and I address it in one line.

As for myself, I am calm, committed and driven. I prefer to be in the action. I pride myself of always having my teams back, and because of that I am careful about who I choose

Now I am building interest. I dont spend a ton of time here, but just enough so a girl can see a ROI with her time and myself. The whole idea is that I want to buyer to see the value in my services, and I think for my target audience this hits home.

The whole profile took 20 minutes to write following SalesScripts basic model, and for the last week it has been successful.

Either way, its 2 now, I am hitting the phone again. Hopefully I get someone on the line

    Salary, targets and commission structure

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 06:04 AM PST

I'm in the O&G industry and work for an equipment supplier. I'm making 110k salary per year and then get a 2.5% share of gross margin on my bookings which works out to be about 30-35k for an OTE of 140-145k. For the past few years I've grown my number from 3M to 3.5M to 4.2M and this year will probably be 4.5M in a particularly shitty O&G market. I see some of the bonus/commission structures here for similar targets and think I should be hunting for something a little more lucrative. Is that the case or do you just hear about a lot of outliers here as those are the people eager to share?

What's your favorite or most effective closing strategy/line?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 01:58 PM PST

I've been in some type of sales role for over 15 years. Naturally, I've fallen into some habits and strategies that have worked for me over that stretch but am looking to add some more tools to my belt.

We all know that feeling, appointment/meeting is going great, we're all on the same page and the prospect is engaged, then the dreaded "let me think about it" or "let me go run it by (fill in the blank b/s name to get out of the meeting) and we'll get back to you" happens. What's your favorite closing strategy/line, how did you come upon it, why do you feel its so effective?

    Edit:

First, this is great. Thank you to everyone who's been contributing, there's a lot of good new ideas that we can all walk away with and implement right away.

Second, I want to clarify what I mean because there has been some confusion. We all understand that there isn't any one part of the sales process that can be skipped. I agree with pretty much everyone that says one-liners will never close a sale, it's about the body of work and the relationship you've built up to the close. When I say "line" I'm asking if there's anything you go back to consistently as a call to action to move on to the paperwork. When I say "strategy" I'm asking about your transition towards asking for the sale once you feel it's time to close and all previous steps in your sales process have been accomplished.

I understand the example I provided above sounds like we are trying to save a sale before it walks out the door. Apologies for not providing more clarity.

    Thanks again everyone, happy hunting!

Strategies for closing a sale remotely

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 12:22 PM PST

I have a startup I'm actively trying to promote. The product offering started with local clients (users of my other product) and naturally expanded. However our growth was limited to 1 person running in person demos of the product to a handful of selected users, most of whom ended up buying a paid tier at the end. We tried replicating similar approaches on the sass product itself, without the need to run a 1:1 demo, but the conversion is pretty low.

Given demo'ing on a 1:1 basis doesn't really scale, what are some strategies we could use to make remote sales for a early stage saas solution startup?

I'm wasn't sure if I should link the product in this post. If anyone wants to take a conversation out of this thread, feel free to DM me. I get more actionable feedback that way.

My experience when weighing out WL balance and income

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

    Hello all,

I just wanted to share an experience I had this year when it comes to making a decision over income and quality of life. I like many people, ground my teeth in B2B for years and finally made the break into medical devices. I joined a company that was growing very quickly and had some pretty great technology that did have any direct competitors. About three months in they changed the management structure and my M-F Travel was switched to 100%. I do know that some reps are road dogs and don't mind a lot of travel. However, there were a lot of personal things I'm involved with in my home town that i was having a hard time being away from. My OTE for that job was about 150-200k. At some point it ended up contributing to some depression and I put on a lot of weight (60lbs) and decided that i needed to make a change. The same day I left a close family member passed away and I was able to take the time to spend time with my family. The important point I am trying to make from this post is I thought I had thrown away an opportunity that i worked very hard for. But life is short. When I returned to my city from tending to the family issues I was reached out to by a manager from a competitor I interviewed with last year. To make a long story short im on pace to clear between 170-225 and was able to have a much better Work Life balance and am in line for a promotion in January.

It can be tough when you are emotionally attached to something. I would argue that health and Happyness are worth making a change. Today there is no loyalty and the gold watch days are over. A big part of my success over the years was understanding my values and how I want to live my life.

Ive Been reading this sub for a while and have seen some posts that were on this topic. Wanted to share it here in case anyone has been juggling with similar issues with their current role.

Big 4 Technology Consulting to SaaS Enterprise AE

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:17 AM PST

    Keeping this short and sweet.

Current B4 Tech Consultant focused on Enterprise strategy (think risk management, cloud, digital, ERPs, etc). Making the move to SaaS Enterprise AE.

I've read nearly every post on here about transitioning into pure sales, but still have a few questions.

    • I want enterprise because of my ability to strategize for large org's and target longer sales cycles & bigger wins — is this a crapshoot since i'm not currently in a sales department?

    • My resume quantifies outcomes / results, but I still don't have a mandated quota or typical SDR/BDR/AE stats — will this hurt my chances of being considered? And is there a workaround?

    • What is a good question to prep a killer answer for? I'm fully confident in my ability to sell myself and make a great impression— I'm mostly concerned about curveball questions only a 10yr AE would be able to answer.

Figured this is a good starting point. I appreciate all of you who take the time to respond. Thanks!

How do you all Communicate to Non-Priority Customers (SaaS Sales)?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 12:00 PM PST

I have a customer looking at purchasing on the low end of our prices for middle of next year and wanted a demo. He got upset I have been slow to response but didn't really give me a good reason why he needed a demonstration so soon just that he's also busy and he needs to make a decision soon. Obviously we would love to cater to every need of any customer but we just don't have the resource bandwidth to support small/academic demonstrations, most especially in Q4.

How do you all handle this?

What is your favorite or most effective strategy/line to get referrals?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 10:57 AM PST

We've had a great discussion going on closing. While closing business is fun, running down new business is even better and referrals are far more effective than cold calling. It's all about keeping that sales funnel full!

What are some strategies or lines you've used with existing clients to gain referrals and write new business?

Looking for a website prospecting tool -- is Siteswan the best thing out there?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 10:49 AM PST

Not affiliated with them or anything like that -- just curious if there are other options out there. In fact, they don't really make too much sense for our business, as they offer a ton of services we don't particularly need - in fact we literally only want them for their web prospecting tool outlined here https://www.siteswan.com/local-prospecting-tool. Essentially we want to see which businesses have a website and which don't in any given area.

Was the first service of it's kind that I'd heard of so wanted to reach out to the community as perhaps some of you might be better versed in this type of thing. Thanks a ton!

Anyone dealt with The Alliance before?

Is it time to throw in the towel?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 10:41 AM PST

Hey guys, thought I'd post here and get some insight. I just feel so lost right now.

I recently got laid off from my positions as a Business Development Manager for a staffing agency. This has been making me rethink that maybe Sales isn't the career for me.

My sales experience started off at car sales, did that for a year until I moved up as a Finance Manager (8 months). Then I was a Brand Ambassador for about 8 months again, selling vape products then moved to my most recent position which is the BDM role.

I was doing okay in my BDM role, landed clients but I could tell I was not getting the results the company and I have hoped for. It was a big struggle for me trying to enjoy phone cold calls and in-person cold calls. I had huge success prospecting online but apparently it wasn't enough.

Due to restructuring I was laid off, they had to cut one salesperson out and since I'm the newest one in the team, I was the first one to go.

It honestly blindsided me, there was no warning or any red flags of me being laid off but it is what it is. I did what I was supposed to do so I do understand there was nothing different I could have done.

Now I just feel so lost and really want to rethink my career. I believe I'm not that good as sales as I thought I was. I'm not sure if this is the right career path for me anymore.

My mom is about to open a Health & Wellness business and I have the opportunity to help her run it and get my RMT license so that I can work in that business and in the future take over. I've been really hesitant because I just don't want to admit my years of sales while I was 19-23 years old was a mistake. For some reason I feel ashamed to go back to school.

I don't really know what advice I'm looking for here, but writing this out helped a bit. Thanks for reading.

What am I worth am I underpaid?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 10:28 AM PST

Hey guys after reading your posts for the past months it's made me question what I am worth as a salesman. I have been highly successful with door to door sales and am decently successful with cold calling, but prefer face to face. I have knocked on 10's of thousands of doors and have made plenty of cold calls so I am not lacking experience. I have also successfully ran a team of sales reps as their manager. My current base is 60k and have the opportunity to make up to 85k with bonuses (which I generally do) and I work insane hours. In your opinion based on my skill and experience should I be looking for something else?

    Glassdoor reviews

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 06:12 AM PST

How legitimately do you take reviews on Glassdoor? Seeing that most happy employees probably aren't posting on Glassdoor in comparison to angry ones who either just got let go or are leaving.

The company I am interviewing with has a 1.9, which seems really low even for Glassdoor standards.

Hated the insurance sales process, should I try sales in another industry?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 09:50 AM PST

Started my first sales role about 2 years ago in commercial property and casualty I was okay, not great, but I really didn't like it the process. I've since move out of sales and into the account management side. Still not my favorite, but it's better than the sales role.

I realized that I miss the relational sales and consultative aspect of the job, but the product was something I couldn't sell with any enthusiasm.

Is there something different or weird about insurance compared to other industries? Do you think I should stay away from sales or look for a sales role in a different industry?

    Tapping Out--Where to Next?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 09:50 AM PST

This has been the best selling year of my career...had a slightly bad month last month (lots of accrual just not a lot of cash) and the jefe is threatening, again, my livelihood.

MASSIVE opportunity came my way (the one I've been working my whole career for) but it requires a relocation and I'm just fucking spent, depressed, etc. I really just want to buy a trailer and do more camping and cycling. I'm truly burnt out on everything.

Anybody transition out of sales into other things like PMing? How would you sell yourself into something else when most of your experience is sales?

    Your opinion on Video CV?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:06 AM PST

So, basically I am searching for a Sales position for my graduation work placement. I have 1 year of experience as a Sales Rep in SaaS company and rocked it pretty much, but I want to grow further and land even better place as an SDR/BDR is a fast growing software companies here in Europe.

What would be your opinion if I will attach 1 min video as a complementary material to my main 1 page CV. I want to immediately show how I act, body language, confidence, etc since it's a customer facing positions. It all sounds good and stuff, but is it actually a good idea from the perspective of a decision maker or HR when they receive it? I am aware of the security reasons as well, that some people won't just risk opening even YouTube link. I know for sure though that my video will give me a significant boost for my candidature, unless it gets immediately discarded. Is it worth taking a risk? What do you think folks

Transitioning from Consulting to Software Sales

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 07:44 AM PST

Trying to decide if I should leave my job at a big 4 to transition to a SDR role with a security software startup. Consulting gives me a wide range of technical skills and opportunities but lacks the lucrative aspect. I just finished my first year at the firm and it has been my first job since graduating. Terrified I'll switch to the SDR role and either hate it or absolutely suck at it and regret not staying with the consulting track.

Anyone made the transition and regretted it or visa versa?

    • I would like a sales job that pays at least $15 per hour in base pay
