    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Nov 07, 2019

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 12:06 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

When do you personally feel it’s time to take profits and run?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 06:38 AM PST

Bought into AMD at ~$14. Now it's touching $36 and indicators show its significantly overbought and super expensive with a PE of 185x. I personally have a tough time seeing it supported at its current level. I could be wrong but the fundamentals don't seem to support it.

    What's your take?

Edit: Lots of awesome responses. Sincere thanks to everybody who shared their insight.

    Cheaper Bloomberg/Eikon Alternative?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 05:51 AM PST

I understand how good the Bloomberg/Eikon platforms are, and that any alternative will not provide the same level of functionality of either.

With that said, can you recommend any cheaper alternatives that are still good!

All being well one day I will be able to afford Bloomberg!

Is there hope for Twilio in the future?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 10:41 AM PST

Not to overreact, but after seeing only optimism about the state of Twilio over the past 3 months (down more than 27%) and the recent miscalculation in a quarterly earnings press release made it shoot down ever further, is the stock turning for the worst? For a while, people have been talking about the stock "turning" or "bouncing back" but I'm just not seeing from where they are coming.

As a TWLO shareholder, I obviously don't plan on selling any time soon with where it is at right now, but I would love to hear some opinions on what you all think of the situation.

Sorry for the noob question, but Disney does not come up in the search function in the WS trade app, not when I 'sort by' entertainment.

I feel like there's something I'm missing here. Help?

What stock screener criteria do you use to find new positions within the market?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 09:48 AM PST

I have been messing around with Stock Fetcher and was just curious what criteria you use to screen stocks. I have been messing around with the Keltner Bands, trying to find volitile stocks at the bottom of the bands

ByteDance IPO when it does happen. Where to buy shares?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 07:28 AM PST

New to investing in general, if and when ByteDance does become public. Where can you be guaranteed to buy shares as soon as markets open on that trading day? Are some trade platforms latent to gain the ability to trade for a certain stock? Like will one trade platform get the ability to trade a companys stock, a week or two after another trade platform has already had the ability to do so? (Ex: Robinhood vs WiseBanyan)

    Sorry for the noob question.

How can I see earnings reports as they come out?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 01:14 PM PST

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find any information on it. How can I see earnings reports for a company as they come out? For example: Disney has their earnings call at 4:30 est today, but when the market closed at 4:00 their stock jumped because people were already reading the report.

Does anyone know a platform in which you can put a MovingAverage line on another indicator (OBV for example). I have seen it don't but don't know which platform was used.

What are the reasons against opening a position in defensive sector ETFs?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 11:39 AM PST

    I'm talking specifically about:

    • Healthcare
    • Consumer Staples
    • Energy
    • Utilies

While I don't want to go as far as to buy a sector rotation ETF that tries to time the market, my portfolio (as well as, I assume, anyone else indexing) is heavily in tech, and I've been reading that in late cycles, healthcare, consumer staples, energy & utilities do well.

Would opening a position in, for example, VHT, VDC, etc. be a potential way to increase returns? Or would this be something where you'd want to trust something like VFMF?

    Honda (HMC) Stock Value

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 12:41 AM PST

Hey yall, I was looking at the HMC stock and noticed it seemed very undervauled. not only is the PE ratio under 10, but the market cap seems to be under its net equity (assets-liability). Maybe my sources are off, but am I missing something here? It doesn't seem to have gone up much in the recent bull market, while toyota and other car companies have. Why is that?

    CannTrust stock, yay or nay?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 03:47 AM PST

I got into looking at stocks when shit hit the fan for CannTrust. I still don't know a lot about trading but they seem to have stabilized recently at a little over a dollar. I've looked at countless articles about them basically stating might be good to buy, but also maybe not. Anyone have an opinion on it?

    Selling Tesla stock

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 08:56 AM PST

I started buying Tesla stock about 6/7 months back when it was around $290 and all the way down to when it bottomed out. My current cost basis is $248 so I'm up around 2k currently. I was thinking about selling 50% of my position. I'm up 38% right now., Thoughts?
