What skills can you learn by yourself that can potentially be turned into a business? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 05:53 AM PST I am just brainstorming and looking mostly at online skills you can learn that you can later offer as a freelancer or build a company around. The most obvious ones we can skip:

How and Where to Register a Business Overseas? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 03:11 AM PST I'm currently managing several different jobs in different countries. Most are small time payments or in lieu payments. I've not been back to my home country in 15 years or so. And really don't want to register a company there as the annual fees are high. I was setting up a bank account in one of these countries with a lot hoops to jump through. All I wanted was an account to avoid international ATM fees. Most places these days are asking me what my occupation is. I have no clue. Take a pick between web development, hotelier, consultant, archaeologist, writer etc The one I tick is usually the one where the country is less likely to freak out about. eg, picking writer is not such a good thing in many places these days (journalism etc). I'd like to register a LLC business so I can just say I'm the CEO/Founder/slash sole employee of this place as it seems easier to just say this than list about 10 different places I work at. Where and how can I set up or register a company outside of the USA. I say outside as one of the bank forms I just filled up was specifically asking 10 questions about USA and I'd really just like to avoid anything to do with TAX and the USA as it's a it's a headache and I'm not from the USA. I saw a lot of information about setting up offshore in Hong Kong etc but I don't know how legit they are. And $500 ouch. I don't earn much. Basically I'd like to set a company so I can pool all my work under one name. I'm not so worried about bank accounts as they just said "pick one job and fill in the form". I'd just like to have a LLC and not sound so jack of all trades which seem to be confusing people these days. Anyone have ideas or experience on this? [link] [comments] |
DBA/LLC question regarding freelance work Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:52 AM PST Hello r/entrepreneur, Looking for a little advice regarding a various naming scheme for my freelance work under an LLC. I recently formed an LLC (100% owned by me, so a disregarded entity) under which I will have a few DBAs for my creative work. What I was wondering is how much should I divide up the DBAs? I am a freelance writer for two websites, run my own website and also have a photography business. I was thinking I could do one DBA for all of my freelance writing, one for the website I run and one for my photo work. Should I further divide up my freelance writing work for each website I write for? Or is grouping them together an 'OK' thing to do? Cheers for any advice in advance. [link] [comments] |
Should I register a trademark before launching? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 04:01 AM PST Somebody has started up a domain (with .org extension) impersonating my business. They have even uploaded a video to youtube (they've done the same video for 2 other companies), and they are using the website to scam visitors. On the homepage they are listing my business name, address, linking to my registration info on Companies House (this is UK), and even hosting my company reg certificate! I only know this because some victim contacted me on LinkedIn threatening to sue my company. I've contacted the registrar so hopefully can get the domain pulled down once I've verified ownership of the business. However.. I am about to launch my first product in the next 3 months and this has jolted me into the fact there are a lot of arseholes out there and it's better to be safe than sorry. What happens if I start building a product without a trademark and some clown registers the trademark later? Could they not then legally push me out of the picture and unwind all my hard work? It's a SaaS and I'll be operating in US and UK markets, so seems I'd need to register the TM in both countries if I did do it. I know the general advice is to not worry about this stuff until you have a viable business/product on your hands, but this recent experience has me a little worried. Appreciate feedback. Vegan Milk Chocolate- What should we name the brand? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 08:49 AM PST Hi, fellow Entrepreneurs! We have a small vegan chocolate biz, currently run under a different name (Chocolate Hollow). We're best known for our premium milk chocolate alternative, called [Chocolate Hollow's] Schmilk Chocolate, which is made with our secret cashew process. We coined the term "Schmilk" and use it as an alternative to "Milk." Before leaving feedback, please check out this Google Doc with the mockup packaging designs. We need to change the brand name to communicate better to our consumers what it is we actually make, so we would appreciate your feedback on these two options (Brand name - "Tagline"):
If you would, please tell us:
Thanks in advance for checking out the post and taking the time to respond! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:59 PM PDT I'm currently 15 and employed at McDonalds earning roughly $100 a week and I was thinking is there anything I can invest my money into that's worth the risk with a good return. I was thinking about saving for a car since I'm very good with my money and can easily budget and won't make any unnecessary purchases. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
How can I make money in Web Development while I'm learning the skill? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:00 AM PST I just started a full stack web development boot camp, and have enough existing skill in HTML and CSS to build pages. JS is pretty early in the curriculum too. I also have plenty of sales experience I want to take on side jobs during the boot camp to earn a little money, work in the field, and practice what I'm learning. I'd like to be as active as possible. I've already searched out the basic answers but I want to come here too to see what you all have to say. So far I see two distinct paths, I can either run a website for myself that earns money (and there are a thousand ways) or connect myself with people who need the work done for their sites (freelancer sites or marketing to local businesses) If you were in my shoes, what would you do? What would you create? What would you sell? How can I maximize the amount of practice I get while still providing a good service? Should I feel out the waters in multiple directions or focus on one thing? [link] [comments] |
[26M] Want to Start a Property Management Company Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:59 AM PST Sup guyz. Was wondering if anyone had any insight or knowledge here on the property management industry. I'm just three months into my first prop management gig, and so far it's been pretty good. Im based in Ontario and manage a 133 unit student rez (almost 600 total beds). Lately, I've really been thinking of starting my own company one day, and maybe even as soon as next fall in 2020. My dream would be to have properties out west in BC and California, as well as in Montreal and Ontario. I don't know how it all works or where I'd even begin, so I'm coming to you guys hoping you can help me out or point me in the right direction. Any advice is hella appreciated! Thanks in advance. How far do I need to niche down? Targeting several industries vs one? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 12:11 PM PST I work a salaried 9-5 job making promo videos, digital graphic design and email marketing for a NPO theatre org. I've been working in this industry for 6 years and the pay is low but the hours are long. I've been doing a bit of freelancing on the side when I can and am ready to step out on my own and start my own business. I could use some guidance as to the direction and offerings as I'm not sure the best way to go... My worry over being able to bring in enough income to support myself makes me feel like I need to offer video services beyond my theatre niche to weddings and businesses as these have proven to be industries with a constant need and money to spend. I'm not particularly passionate about shooting weddings or business videos but research is showing that most theatres don't have the money, and/or see the value in high quality video production, instead opting for short social content or super high end production values. The area in the middle, which is what I offer, seems to be an unproven gray area unless they do it in-house. This takes me back to thinking I should offer services for weddings/ businesses. It's a vicious circle. This research has also led me to Consider starting a digital branding agency where I would provide a package of: cinematic short video promo (before the show opens,) digital show poster artwork, promotional photography and social media banners which all have a shared look and style that is cohesive and professional. As an add-on service I could also do on-stage production photos and a performance trailer/sizzle reel. So I'm stuck. Do I cast a wide net in the hopes that I can make enough income to grow the business and then slowly drop services/ industries as I grow? Or do I pick one niche, find my USP educate theatres about why they should use my services? Do I stick with just video or do I expand into digital branding to raise my value and offer a package service rather than just one off video services? I want to waste time and spread myself too widely, but I don't want to waste time trying to serve a niche that may not be big enough to support me either. tl/dr: theatre video creator looking to start business confused about offering services in one or several niches to have the best chance of success and growth. Good niche sole proprietor ideas? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 05:58 AM PST I have no fear of heights or diving under water. One guy I knew said he is SCUBA certified and scrapes barnacles off boats. Any weird, in demand professions or ideas like this? [link] [comments] |
Any entrepreneurial ideas for a sci-fi nerd like me? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:49 AM PST I'm a teacher already, so it'd be something on the side. I can write well, have an advanced degree and have run my own business (wedding coordinator/venue management) for about 10 years. Just looking for something I'll love doing. [link] [comments] |
Simple business idea #2 for you young hustlers Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:30 AM PST If anybody is struggling to make their first dollars online, try this. Start contacting influencers via Instagram and cold email. Ask them if they want more brand deals (duh, who doesn't). Ask for a screenshot of their analytics and audience demographics. Then cold email brands in the same niche and ask if they want to run sponsored posts. You bridge the gap between influencers and brands. But how are you making money? Through taking a % of the brand deal. Essentially, you become an influencer management agency. Win-win for all parties. The influencer gets more promos, the brand gets ad opportunities, and you get a commission for connecting the two. P.S. - My last post blew up with comments saying I was suggesting it for established entrepreneurs, which is false. This is for people trying to break into online biz and need fast, in-the-trenches experience. P.P.S. - You could try this with other platforms like Twitter and even TikTok. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:52 AM PST In the book, Mike says that every quarter you should take 50% of all the money in the Profit account as a profit distribution. But he also says that money in Profit gets moved to Profit Hold every 10/25th. Could someone clear this up for me? Does he mean I should take 50% of the funds in Profit Hold, or 50% of whatever funds I deposited into Profit the 2 weeks before the end of a quarter? [link] [comments] |
How to find a wealthy business partner? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:36 AM PST Hello entrepreneur, I have a very specific business, I am a trader of the financial markets. The question is, how to find the right partner to create a small startup related to my direction? The problem is that usually people in the trading groups (chats & boards) are very far from trading business (Not taking in action 5% monthly profitability), most of them did not even get close to the real results, which means they simply can't assess the potential of my offer. Briefly outlined, after many years of hard work, I finally managed to reach a highest level, with a guaranteed ~1-2% daily profit. Evaluating very rudely this is a practical doubling of the deposit monthly. At this end of learning journey, I have a very small deposit, and I have no intention of working for another half a year to collect the necessary amount for living. Therefore, decided to find a business partner who is interested in financial markets and has a sufficient amount of necessary funds to step into the business. I decided to create a copy-trading service, according to my calculations, the profitability of the service for 60 days will be several tens of thousands of dollars monthly, and this is only for the provision of this service. The question is how to find the right person for this startup. Naturally, I am ready to provide all the evidence of my work by providing real account day trading statement, and I am even ready to pass a new suitability test if necessary. But will work only with a person who will provide evidence of their viability, let's take this seriously and we will not lose each other's time. Sincerely, xTrades [link] [comments] |
Question about FB and Insta adds Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:17 AM PST Hey guys, I started a carpet and upholstery cleaning business. I'm actually 3 months in and I want to expend my marketing a bit. I started running the 2 campaigns on insta and FB with the following images. https://imgur.com/gallery/HK4kr8f FB keeps complaining that the images are too heavy with txt. What can I cut out? Is there something I'm obviously doing wrong but I'm overlooking it? Thanks in advance. This is a whole new world for me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:15 AM PST Ok so I am 14 and about to start working my first job. At this age I am only allowed to work for a parent or guardian so I will be working for my dad. My money will go to a college savings account that my dad opened when I was born but the problem is that I can only use those funds for educational purchases so I couldn't really use that for anything for the next few years. Would it be a good idea to get my dad to open up a checking account and split the money I make between both accounts ? [link] [comments] |
Opening and Closing a Business In The Same Tax Year Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:10 AM PST I started a business in April of 2019. I generated revenue for a while and pretty much broke even on my initial investment. Business fizzled out and I am no longer making money. In fact, all the monthly expenses associated with the business are coming out of pocket. I just think that I was overconfident about the amount of demand that there would be, which was certainly lacking in ubiquity. Perhaps that was from not enough marketing, social media, etc. Regardless, I am working on cleaning things up now, but have not yet shut it down officially. I was wondering if opening and closing a business in the same year would affect the taxes? Should I wait until after tax season to close? Anyone with a similar situation? [link] [comments] |
Food brand/sector entrepreneurs, what’s your stories? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:28 AM PST Hi everyone, I'm in the process of launching my food brand and so I'm hugely interested by any stories of success / failure / lessons learned across the food sector. I'm launching a brand by first taking it to local markets, with the aim of getting good feedback to tweak my recipes to then approach independent stores, and use (hopefully) good sales data to approach larger chains. However, this is obviously great on paper, and I am ignorant of the many issues that can occur, and am eager to learn. So if you've got any lessons, stories or anything intriguing you think is worth sharing across the food sector, I would love to hear it, and I'm sure many lurkers would too! Thanks! Disclaimer for all of those looking to get into Drop Shipping Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:58 AM PST There are at a minimum 10 or so questions about drop shipping a day on this sub, so I figured I'd clear something up. DO NOT get into drop shipping UNLESS you can run Facebook and Instagram ads at an EXPERT level. It's far more efficient/profitable to do RA on Amazon and work your way into wholesaling where you can learn the basics of running a business. [link] [comments] |
Do you follow a guru? If so who? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:51 AM PST So I've just been briefly here but people mention Dan Pena and Gary Vaynerchuk. As long as you take them with a grain of salt, I feel if you model yourself and follow the advice of a guru, it can be helpful. Building a business is difficult and it'll help clear the noise. You'll need inspiration daily and they will be able to do that for you. Do you have any or do you think I'm wrong? [link] [comments] |
