Live here in Spain this is a big deal, Spain is required by the EU to spend hundreds of millions to clean up their automobile/carbon problem. Once they've found an international partner, they're likely to order huge amounts of the trial goes as planned.

Performance is tied to EU subsidies, and avoiding large lingering fines. Good news.

what's the optimal way to invest? Dividend, value?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 06:38 AM PST

    Broad question, I'll elaborate!

I'm 19, and I'm looking at the very very least 10+ years into the future. The stock with the highest dividend yield I own is currently MCD, so I mainly own growth / value stocks. My question: when I am this young, what would I be better of doing? Sticking to growth and value, or focus on dividends? Or should I mix them?

I'd like to pay my bills one day with my dividends, but I'd rather get the most value in the long run. My portfolio is diversified in max 25% per sector and at max 10% per stock.

I currently have 16.192 USD invested, and a 1000$ not realised return.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm from Denmark, so any sell / dividend is highly taxed.

    VMWare smashes earnings; raises guidance

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:20 PM PST

VMware Inc. (NYSE: VMW) reported an 86% surge in earnings for the third quarter of 2020 driven by higher revenue as well as unrealized gain on an investment in Pivotal Software. The results exceeded analysts' expectations.

Net income soared by 86% to $621 million or $1.50 per share. The latest quarter included an unrealized gain of $249 million on an investment in Pivotal Software. Adjusted earnings decreased by 4% to $1.49 per share.

Revenue grew by 12% to $2.46 billion. License revenue increased by 10% to $974 million. The results reflected broad-based strength across its product and solutions portfolio.

Hybrid Cloud Subscription and SaaS revenue grew to over 13% of total revenue in Q3, and the company expects this category to continue to grow significantly next year, including the contributions of Carbon Black and Pivotal.

For the third quarter, the company continued to see traction and customer momentum in support of VMware's vision to deliver a software architecture that enables any app, on any cloud, delivered to any device. The company remained on track to close the acquisition of Pivotal Software by the end of the fiscal year.

For the quarter, software maintenance services revenue increased by 12.5% year-over-year to $1.28 billion. Professional services revenue grew by 13.5% to $202 million. Services accounted for 60% of the total revenue while license accounted for just 40%.

Cloud computing continues to be a rapidly growing market for VMware. And the company has been betting huge with several big acquisitions for driving product and market growth.

Why is price hike after an IPO is considered a good thing?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 07:24 AM PST

    Hi all

Doesn't this mean the company has mis-priced their IPO? They could've gotten a larger amount of cash.

But when I read it on the news, this type of price hike is generally celebrated.

    Thank you.

    Give stock as Christmas gift

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 06:18 AM PST

What is the best way to do this? I've heard Stockpile and im leaning towards that. Anyone have experience with using this platform for gifting stock?

Also, i am planning to gift stock to a relative who is having a baby soon. What are some stocks that you think have a good chance to grow significantly over the next 20ish years?

How do mergers work when it comes to stocks?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 06:49 AM PST

    Hello all,

I posted about this a week ago... I'm reposting, because my questions weren't fully answered.

My question is this: how does the merger between WCG (Wellcare) and Centene work for stock holders? Put another way: what are the mechanics of how the merger works for stockholders in one or both of the companies? Do my WCG stocks turn into Centene stocks? Do I get a buyout? Or do both stocks continue on as before?

Here's the info about the merger:

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-27/centene-to-buy-wellcare-in-cash-stock-deal-valued-305-39-shr-jtr1w7pp

I invested in WCG about a year ago, and the stock is now up about 60%. Can someone explain what the implication is for someone like me, who's only holding about 10K worth of WCG stocks? Is the merger meaningful to me? What exactly happens if the merger is approved?

    Thank you!

    Platform for Asia (Taiwan) resident.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 05:15 AM PST

    Good evening all,

I am hoping someone can help me out because I just cant find information.

I live in Taiwan and only have bank accounts from Taiwan.
I want to trade stocks with an online platform that is lets say "international" friendly.

Popular platforms require you to be a US/CA citizen. I am South African and live in Taiwan.

Which online platform has access to US stocks which will allow me to use a bank from Taiwan to transfer funds into their eWallet and vice versa?

Thanks for any help in advance.

    Investing in foreign stocks

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 07:18 AM PST

I've been thinking a lot lately that I want some way to invest in some countries that are meant to take off economically and socially in the next couple decades. Is there some way to do this with stocks or am I barking up the wrong tree? I've been wondering if maybe there is an index out there with a portfolio from one continent or region.

Obviously pretty inexperienced with stocks but any help is appreciated.

    Unexplained stock jump: OVID

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 02:12 PM PST

The stock fell last month after a new public offering but jumped 20% today for no apparent reason. They didn't release earnings or announce anything, and I can't find any news on the recent jump. Generally speaking, is it common to have larger swings that aren't accompanied by earnings reports or major announcements? Maybe some hedge funds got in? Nothing major is expected from them until next year when they release their new clinical data.

$MBUU, An interesting growth play in the recreational boating segment

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 01:38 PM PST

Malibu Boats ($MBUU) is a US designer, manufacturer and marketer of a diverse range of powerboats for recreational and competitive use. Most importantly, they are a ski and wakeboard boat leader and innovator.

In the diverse $10 or $11 billion recreational powerboat market of the US, the ski/wakeboard segment is the fastest growing according to the NMMA. Annual sales of this segment in the US have been growing consistently in the high-single, low-double-digit % range since 2011 or so. This is being driven by the rising popularity of wakesurfing/wakeboarding activities (mainly among millennials but probably also Gen X and Z).

Malibu have achieved a phenomenal recovery since the 2009 recession, led by CEO Jack Springer, with EPS and revenue still growing by ~30-40% YOY today. Their performance is eclipsing competitors in the US market, and they still have significant expansion potential into new international markets. The company owns a number of patents, and licenses some of its tech to other manufacturers as well. It is a highly profitable company, with a sound balance sheet and huge growth potential.

Earlier this year, The CEO Magazine published an interview with Jack Springer, where he discusses the corporate environment at Malibu.

IMO, $MBUU is a great growth play. What do you think?

This Is How Google Will Collapse

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 08:22 AM PST

    https://medium.com/forwardtick/how-google-collapsed-b6ffa82198ee

"This Is How Google Will Collapse" was an extremely popular article written in 2017 that goes into quite a bit of detail and in depth analysis on how/why Google would ultimately fail as a company. As a whole, the write up is pretty well done, and I wouldn't say that the author did a bad job at all. It's interesting though then to see now in the present day, just how wrong the author turned out to be in his predictions given that, at the time, it garnered such a great deal of popularity when it was posted.

A personal take / some potential reasoning for why things ended up this way:

    - People largely underestimated how diversified Google has become.

    - Dismissing YouTube as unprofitable seems laughable, big media companies are probably kicking themselves for not trying a similar concept earlier. That's the kind of business where an eventual single digit profit margin will make you tremendously wealthy.

    - Google Maps is another example of an ad driver that's not easily replaced by a competitor. Only giants like Apple and Microsoft can compete on that product.

    - G Suite has made major inroads in the lucrative enterprise productivity space.

    - Google is also slowly building a devices business, and all you have to do is take a peek at Apple to know how successful that can be.

    - Google has the #1 web browser with growing market share to alarming Internet Explorer levels with its search engine and tools set as the defaults. Comparisons to Microsoft's fall from grace assume history will be repeated, but unlike IE6, nobody's making a faster/noticeably better to the end user browser than Chrome.

    - As far as the search ads itself, I don't know that the article makes a compelling case that users simply don't use search engines or the general Internet anymore. The current trend of ad blocking is that they are getting less and less effective. I'm sure Amazon and Facebook have taken a slice of that advertising pie but it seems unrealistic to expect them to take the whole thing.

    - Not only that but Google's ad platform allows website owners to place ads directly on sites, so an external link on Facebook can take a user right back into Google's revenue space.

Question about stock buyout with KEMET

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 10:40 AM PST

KEM recently agreed to be acquired by YAGEO for 27$ per share. Looks like the deal will be completed mid 2020.

KEM is currently trading at $26.65 per share - is there a point in selling the stock now, or would it be better to wait until the deal goes though? Is it possible KEM goes even higher before then? Is it possible the deal doesn't go through?

Never had this situation before, would appreciate some advice.

Indexation? What other businesses are similar to Berkshire Hathaway?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 05:50 AM PST

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/inefficient-market-theory-berkshire-hathaway-222359387.html

I believe I understand the article: Berkshire Hathaway is considered a business of finances but they own parts of other businesses from other sectors and therefore do not share the exact same benefits and issues of businesses completely in the finance sector. What other businesses fall into this category? Maybe this doesn't happen often but if a sector is hit hard one year, is it a decent idea to invest in one of these companies?

What happens if my stockbroker goes under?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 03:20 AM PST

I've been getting into stocks the last year or so with a few friends, each of us tossing ideas around - we're Australian which I think will be relevant. My main hesitation over stocks is the idea that I'm essentially investing in a person/company, not necessarily the stocks directly. This is something I don't fully understand and I'd like to understand better.

Basically, let's say I invest through an online broker. They're reasonably trusted, have a very nice platform, so on. Say I throw $5,000 into the BigGroupCollective (BGC) index and, for some reason, one day the stock broker just -stops-. The reason doesn't matter, but one day I just can't use the online broker any more.

In that situation, what happens to my stocks? Are the stocks still technically in my name and I just need to sign up with another broker, prove (somehow) that I have 1000 BGC stocks, and get right back to staring at graphs? Do I lose the stocks and somehow get paid back in insurance of some sort? What are the legalities here?

The same question applies to a real, in-person broker. What if the company just closes up shop one day? Am I SOL and now need to farm cow poo for my weekly frozen dinner?

I'm seriously considering investing in indices as a long term investment over property as it seems much more stable, has similar or greater returns, and is less prone to literally going up in flames, but I'm worried that there's the potential for my money to just go ~poof~.

Can a shareholder send a proposal or petition to all other shareholder?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 05:45 PM PST

As a shareholder, if I think a board member or executive is not a fit and proper person to be running the company. How do I petition to have that individual replaced and communicate that petition to other shareholders.

Likewise, if as a ETF shareholder, I think a particular stock should be removed from the portfolio, how can I petition for that change?
