Got a text from a former coworker saying our old boss has been opening credit cards in employees' names for the last couple of years. Old boss was arrested and fled the country.

I worked for a 25-30 person consulting service for three years until the start of 2018. The employee who texted me about it said she had just quit about three months ago and she got a notification a credit card had been opened in her name. They were able to trace it to our old boss (she had quit about a month before the card was opened) and supposedly he has done this to multiple former employees. Last summer, I had a credit card opened in my name but the credit card company agreed to not try to collect on it. What can I do know that I know (or have a really good idea) who did it?

    This was in California.

I guess I own my parents home now? Please help

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 04:56 AM PST

I got off the phone with my dad today. We had a pleasant conversation and he said he was finishing up some paperwork. I asked him "what paperwork ?" He told me that because he got a letter from a law firm saying that my parents owed them money from a law suit from a few years back (10 years about). He was afraid they would take the house so he had filled out a document that switched the house into my sister and I's name. He told me not to worry because he and my mom would still pay the bills. I'm a 21 year old college student and my sister just turned 18. I live across the state. He was going to do this without telling me. Can he do that without me signing anything? What does this mean for me? I'm so uncomfortable with this but if I refuse, am I turning my family out on the street?

Edit: I live in SC, USA Edit II: There's no mortgage on the house

TLDR: My dad is transferring the family the family home into my name without my knowledge.

I found out recently that the fence between my house and my neighbors is on my property by a foot and a half. Their house is owned by the bank.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 04:52 AM PST

I live in MA. I bought my house in March but it had been empty for about 5 years before me. After I moved in, one of my neighbors across the street told me that the owners of the house to the left of mine had moved the fence to give them a bigger driveway after my house had been foreclosed on.

Well, the bank now owns the house that moved the fence. I had a survey done that confirmed the fence is on my property. Am I legally allowed to move the fence to the property line? Do I need to notify anyone? I'm not looking for anyone to pay for it, I'll do the work myself. I just don't want to make a wrong move and have to go up against a bank in court.

Court Date changed, no one showed? Chattanooga, TN

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:37 AM PST

Towards the end of October I was served papers over an outstanding debt < $1000. The original court date was 11/4. I received a letter from the Law firm representing the lender saying that the date had been changed to 11/5. I showed up to a very nice but confused Judge who asked who I was and why I was there. I handed my papers and she confirmed that the Lender's Law firm (Based in Wichita, KS) had been there the day before.

Did I just get tricked into not showing up for my court date?

Can my dad force me [23/M] to join military school?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:07 AM PST

Here in Newark, New jersey, my dad and I have had a rocky relationship this past year and it seems to be coming to a head. Last night he comes in my room and he tells me that he's looking into signing me up for military school. He keeps saying that it'll "make a man out of me". He doesn't approve of my retail job and he also doesn't like me spending my free time playing video games in my room and watching the "nerdy" movies like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. He's always been of the mind that military service should be mandatory and he's even gone so far as to write to our congressman about bringing back the military draft.

If I'm 23 and still living with my parents, can my dad legally sign me up for military school like this? He said that he's going to make me join and I want to know if there's any legal basis to that since I'm over 18.

Being forced to work during fumigation - Florida

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:35 AM PST

I work at an office building where yesterday there were talks of the entire building being closed for fumigation today. The fumigation is happening on the first floor and my office is on the second. I can only assume the air moves between floors. When my manager found out I heard him making calls and he somehow convinced the powers at be that we should still have to work and that we would not be allowed to work from home.

We are now in the office and my eyes and nose are hurting, I've complained and yet was told we cannot leave. I feel that we are being forced to work in an unsafe environment.

Any advice on what to say or do would be appreciated. I don't want to pay for this job with health issues later.

My car got towed, but I don't want it back.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:01 AM PST

Just like the title says. It got towed cause the registration was super expired. I've been trying to figure out a way to get rid of it for ages and my complex finally towed it. I have some stuff still in there, but I'm willing to cut my losses on that. Are there any legal ramifications to me just leaving it? Also, I live in Texas if that makes a difference.

Edit: I also just realized it's not street legal. Will they even let me take it with the expired registration?

Update: I talked with the tow yard. The fees ended up being around $200, and I'll have to use my lunch to handle things, but it's getting picked up by Peddle and I'm glad things didn't get crazy. Thank you all for the help!

My boyfriend's bank account was closed and they won't tell him where the money went

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:20 AM PST

So my boyfriend just moved from Louisiana to Chicago for a new job and he was previously using a local bank back in Louisiana. For the move he decided to change banks to Chase. So here's the problem as succinctly as I can get it.

    1. He gave his mom access to the old bank account so she could do the transferring because he was waiting on some stuff to be deposited from his old job and it wasn't going to happen until after he needed to be in Chicago

    2. He opens a Chase account and they say it's fine to wait on the transfer funds.

    3. Everything gets deposited to the old bank and his mom gets a cashier's check for everything in it. She goes and deposits it for him at Chase. It's gonna take your usual absurd number of days for processing, nbd.

    4. It looks like everything has some through and it deposited in the Chase account. He goes to use it and the entire checking account is locked. He calls and it turns out the other bank issued a cashier's check with his first and middle name but the wrong last name. So he can't have the money because nobody noticed the error before the deposit. This includes the first bank, his mom, and Chase where she physically deposited the check.

    5. Chase's solution is to take all the money back out of the new checking account, send it back to the first back so they can cut a check with the correct name on it and we can do the entire process again. The only problem is per their policy they may have to close the account after funds are removed but they will try not to. Okay seems reasonable.

    6. The 3-5 day window for the check refund ends and he checks his account. The account is completely closed. Okay let's call and check on the status of everything. There has apparently been a "back of house decision" to not tell my boyfriend where the money was sent. We confirmed that it was not sent to his old bank by calling them unless for some reason they decided to snail mail it to them. But Chase will not tell him where the money was sent and he went as high as he could on the phone chain until they were like "this is as high as you're getting".

My question is, how can they not tell him where this money went? Is there anything we can do that anyone knows of. That's all the money he had and he hasn't had access to it for at least a week and a half now. We just have no idea what to do and I don't see how they can legally tell him they won't tell him where the money was sent. Personally I wonder if they even know where the money was sent.

I was hustled by a Prostitute.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 09:09 AM PST

About a month ago I was in Las Vegas and called up someone for some fun. They said it would only be $50 so I figured why not. They showed up and took the money, a picture of my drivers license and then demanded more money. I said no multiple times but throughout it they told me they needed it and their boss was going to be very angry (he was outside the hotel). She then proceeded to take my phone and send herself $1000 dollars. I am at a loss because I didn't know she sent that amount and after the deed she left very quickly. Is there anything I can do or am I going to have to take a loss here. Any advice would be helpful.

Company wants to skew numbers or end quarter early so employees won't hit their bonus numbers.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 11:04 AM PST

This is a throw out acct. I work for a small company. I hopped on a call and over heard them talking about either ending the quarter early or raising the bonus mark in order for less employees to hit their bonus. The managers created this system to track our numbers and every quarter, in order to get the bonus we have to hit a certain number. Let's say that number is an average of 10. If they increase it to 10.5 unannounced, end the quarter earlier than normal, or skew the numbers in a way so fewer people get the bonus, is this something to worry about?

    1. Is this even legal
    2. What or who should I talk with
    3. What can I do or should I think about doing

Ex-Husband in violation of divorce decree. What do I do?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:18 AM PST

First time posting, on mobile, sorry for formatting issues.

    In Oklahoma.

In September of last year, my ex and I filed and settled our divorce in a single day, going through a lawyer who is a friend of ours (mostly his). We agreed to a number of things, but primarily, he would get the house, I would get the dogs and we split the debt 50/50. He had 90 days to refinance the mortgage so my name was taken off. I ended up homeless for most of that year, still caring for our dogs, still making the payments on the debt we accrued. I did not seek alimony, even though I probably had a right to do so since I was the primary breadwinner for the first half of our relationship, with him becoming the breadwinner during the second half after we decided I would go back to school full time.

Here we are over a year later, he's 3 months behind on his mortgage. I found this out, because it was sent to collections and he never refinanced, so this is now on my credit report.

    What can I do?

Homeless guy pushed over my motorcycle

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 09:48 AM PST

I live in an apartment complex in Minneapolis - I keep my motorcycle covered and locked in the garage.
Lately as it's been getting colder homeless people have been coming into the garage at night and messing around with people's vehicles. Last week a friend of mine got their car keyed. Last weekend my bike cover got stolen (we assume someone tried to use it as a blanket) and then yesterday I came down to see my motorcycle on its side.
There's some body damage and a broken blinker.
I think it's absolutely ridiculous we pay for rent here but yet can't feel safe and secure in the building.
What are my options to get compensation/take legal action/change the status quo here?

Previous hidden bankruptcy water account coming to bite us, the new homeowners, in the ass. Milwaukee, WI.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:22 AM PST

So as stated in the title, my husband and I closed on a house in April of this year. Come September, we received a $1300 water bill from the city. Upon inquiry, this balance is from a bankruptcy holding account that was associated with the property two owners ago. It wasn't taken out of holding until now, because the title company that sold it out of bankruptcy failed to request a final water bill, and the title company that handled the sale to us failed to do so as well. So water works realized it was under new ownership and released the balance. It is now November and this issue still has not been resolved because the title companies are playing pass the buck with who is responsible to clear the amount. All the while me and my husband who have very demanding, stressful jobs and very little money to throw around to solve this issue are sweating it out. My main question is, who do I go after, the initial title company or the title company that dealt with our sale, and do I need a lawyer?

Pet dispute with landlord - PA

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 04:49 AM PST

My friend has 2 small pet birds (cockatiels). Her lease allows her to have them specifically. The landlord just found out she lets the birds out of their cages, as normal pet bird owners do, and is saying she is not allowed to let them out of their cages. But the lease says, 'birds will not be allowed to fly inside the premises unattended. " They are never unattended. What can she do? Lease isn't up until April. Birds are extremely unhappy being caged all the time - it's not good for their wellbeing.

    Update:
I called the police, and they informed me the case was a theft and if I didn't come in by November 4th, they would send it to the DA. I do not have an attorney yet and I did not show up as I didn't want to incriminate myself. Of note, I don't know why I forgot to mention this, I am on informal probation for a public intoxication charge back in June. I have put myself through a month long rehab between now and then. I need help finding free legal resources.

Question regarding child support. (Semi-long story included)

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 11:05 AM PST

Quick backstory: My husband was previously married to a woman who had three kids from a previous relationship. My husband legally adopted the three children and shortly thereafter, the woman filed for divorce. They settled outside of court for an agreement that he would pay $300 bi-weekly and keep them on his health insurance until they were out of high school... he also never had visitation rights. (Believe me. I'm making a long, tragic, and heartbreaking story very short here.)

Fast forward 8 years. We've been married for 4 of those years, and I never cared that he had this baggage. Right now, only one of the kids has yet to graduate high school. And all three are still on his insurance, even though that wasn't required in the agreement. 3 years ago, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that has made going to work very difficult, even with a reasonable accommodation and FMLA, so with his allotment coming out, I'm basically supporting us (which is fine). Because of the amount of work he's missing, we're concerned that he could lose his job any day now, which would remove the kids from his health insurance. And of course, that would probably initiate a trip to domestic relations to sort things out.

My income will easily support us, and we have a some money saved up due to the sale of some property we sold back in February. My question is: Can the sale of this land be factored into the payment? His YTD on his paystubs is about $25,000 right now, and I'm pretty confident she's making more than that. Another question is: How do they determine who would pay for health insurance if he lost his job? (We live in Pennsylvania)

Thank you, sorry this is so long. I can add any clarification if needed.

My neighbors across the street park in front of my house in protest and today they backed into my trashcan to do it. I'm having a hard time decoding the law to see if I can do anything.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:26 AM PST

I believe the neighbors across the street like to park in front of my house out of protest for me calling the cops on them when some guy dragged a girl back into the house screaming one morning. I believe the to be the case because ever since that happened they do it almost when ever possible.

Now this is annoying as I come home after a 10 hour shift and can't park in front of my house, but I know I don't own the space infront of my house. I am trying to figure out where the parking cut off is because NRS 484B.450 (b) states "In front of a public or private driveway;" so it's right where my driveway ends. Then further down is NRS 484B.450 (n) "Except as otherwise provided in subsection 2, within 5 feet of a public or private driveway;" so if it's 5 feet from where my driveway ends then they are almost always parked illegally close to my driveway.

I don't even know where to start, I don't have the guys name. I've tried talking nicely and all that got me was yelled at and cussed out in Spanish. The house has been raided by SWAT on a few occasions so that doesn't make me feel good about dealing with them one on one either. I don't think there's any way anybody could be living there legally there's too many people in the house and the neighborhood has complained a number of times and the city won't/can't do anything.

I know it's not so nightmarish because they arent breaking out things or really going crazy but I doubt they fear the law so at any point it could turn to that. Is there anypoint in trying to use the law?

Edit: Sorry forgot my location. I'm in Las Vegas, NV

[CA] Custody/dispute over ashes (cremains) among half-siblings

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 03:18 AM PST

My mother and father were married in 1989. She was his second wife. I am their only child. They separated in 1990, but never got a divorce. In between his first and second marriage, he had an affair with another woman, and had three children by her, two of which are older than me.

My parents reunited around 2010, and spent the final years of their life together. My father died in December 2016. My mother was hospitalized at that time, so she was unable to be the informant... the eldest half-sibling made the cremation arrangements as a "favor" - my mother held in good faith that she would receive his ashes and his property (cell phone), but neither were returned to her. My dad's ashes were at the half-sibling's house, then passed to one of the other half-siblings. He has not been buried yet.

My mother recently died this past October 21st. I am making funeral arrangements for her now, as well as burial arrangements. My mother made it known she would like to be buried in the same cemetery as her mother, and that it was my mom and dad's wish to be buried together in the same plot/niche. My grandmother is interred in Southern California. However, parts of his other family want him to be buried in Northern California or to scatter his cremains.

In California, who has legal custody and greater rights to burial? Though I am younger, would I have superior rights since my parents were married at the time of my father's death? If they refuse to release the ashes, can I get a court order so I can finally put him and her to rest?

Apartment complex painted the parking structures and now my car has paint all over it

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 08:23 AM PST

[Seattle,WA] A few days ago, the apartment complex I live in repainted the covered parking spot structures. Overnight, with the weather being foggy, the paint dripped all over 6-8 cars including mine.

I took my car to the car wash hoping to have it wash off but it looks like the paint had dried off on some parts of my car.

I'm not sure how to go about this, is this a insurance claim, or a talk to the property manager to clean my car? I'm at a loss of what to do.

    School lost my electric skateboard

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 11:59 AM PST

I ride my electric skateboard to school everyday. My school makes me put my electric skateboard in an administrator room every day. Today, at the end of the day, the skateboard wasn't there. There were like 5 administrators in the room looking for it and they couldn't find it and told me they will check and see if they have it by tomorrow. If they don't find it and the school lost it, will they have to pay for it. I'm in Florida by the way

    Ohio tenant/landlord law

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 04:27 AM PST

I recently vacated a home, we vacated the home on 9/30 and did the walk through the same day.

We received a letter itemizing the deduction the landlord was taking from our securities deposit. The security deposit was $800 and the letter we received was an invoice for $3,900.

The landlord is trying to charge us for things ranging from mulch to light bulbs to a new garage door.

From what I have researched, pursuant with ORC concerning the return of the security deposits, the landlord has to return the deposit (or send the itemized list of deductions) within 30 days of vacation of premises.

The letter we received was post marked Nov 1. - 32 days after vacation of property

I am wondering, since the landlord did not comply with the 30 days if we are responsible for remitting the $3900 or of we should hire a lawyer and fight this.

    TIA

Neighbors installed new cameras that record sound - is that legal in California?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 12:53 PM PST

My neighbors have installed new cameras around their yard. One of them just showed me a video on their phone from the camera feed. The video clearly has sound on it. I know it's legal for them to video record their property, but they could potentially be recording sounds and conversations taking place on my property; and I find that to be a huge invasion of my privacy.

Can they legally record sound on their cameras, in their yard?

Edited to add: YES. I've Googled it. There isn't any clear information regarding surveillance cameras in a neighbor's yard picking up sound outside of their yard. That's why I came here to ask for help.

Landord is issuing fines to entire building due to trash violation

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 10:08 AM PST

The apartment complex in Texas has trash pickup service on every other day. Apparently tenants are placing trash off days or after pickup service has went through. The landlord has issued notices that if they cannot figure out who is placing them outside of pickup service hours, they will fine the building adjacent to the trash. Now they have started issuing fines to all of the tenants in the buildings.

As a tenant, i am getting fined for somebody else's mistake. I have talked with the manager to see if they can place cameras or have another accommodations provided instead of fining innocent people. Is this legal?
