I'd like to start a project around teaching people to make restaurant quality food at home, for cheap (link to my post in r/povertyfinance in body.)

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 05:48 AM PST

I'm planning to start a project around helping people cook good food at home, confidently and frugally. This is something that I'm passionate about, and honestly, that's my MAIN reason for doing it. But since I have my own business (just me,) it's not like I get an automatic paycheck every month; I have to go out there and GET the money (you know that feeling.) Because of this, I can't help but try to assign some sort of monetary value to things that I spend a lot of time on. I've spent years trying to figure out how to monetize this project, but at this point I think I'm going to do it for the purpose of having a large body of work (proof,) that my potential PAYING clients can reference. That's how I'm rationalizing it anyway. Does anyone else have "free" stuff that they spend lots of time on? Would I be wasting my effort?

ABOUT MY BUSINESS: I'm a chef. I spend most of my time doing custom catering, recipe development, and product development. I specialize in very high-end chefs table experiences in the client's home, and party-prep (like meal-prep, but you have 20 relatives coming over, you want to pull out all the stops, but you feel like having a caterer in your home would be a little much.)

    Created a 15k/month digital agency part-time, today I quitted my 9-5 job.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 12:13 PM PST

4.5 years ago I started in my first fulltime job as an engineer.. after 2 months I felt like "is this it?", I saw myself becoming unhappy longterm, and I and my family barely made ends meet.

I started to research how to make an extra income online, failing at multiple things on the way, amazon affiliate, eCommerce to name a few.

5 months into it I took a course that changed my perspective and I went into starting a digital agency, working with mainly Google Ads (Adwords in those days), Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Facebook Ads.

It only took 2 weeks and I had my first 1000$ client (recurring each month).

Skip forward 4 years and the company now provides me with a steady income of 13k/month, and the time is right for both me and my family that I left the 9-5 and went all-in on the digital agency.

But I have a strong urge to document my journey from here, and I always wanted to document the journey from 0, but I felt it took time away from growing the business.

Now my question is, are there any questions or topics you want me to address on my soon to be youtube channel? Going to cover both the business side and personal.

How do I make my website ADA compliant?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 12:39 PM PST

Unfortunately for me my business meets the criteria of having to comply with the new ADA standards. I'm worried about getting sued and would like to fix the issue before it arises. Anecotes and suggestions welcome. Thanks.

What's anybody starts on opening and old school arcade. Filled with a 90s and early 2000 games like MK3 Street Fighter Alpha, Simpsons arcade X-Men, Killer Instinct, pinball machines etc. Could it be profitable or just reliving the past?

    Non-technical founders with a tech-fueled business.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 12:05 PM PST

For non-technical founders out there, what's been your approach in building the technical infrastructure behind your company.

Typically the two main options are as follow:

    1. Onboard a CTO and work hand in hand to conceptualize.
    2. Design the specs and hire a developer to code (either onshore or offshore).

Curious as to everyone's preferences and/or experiences.

My experience - Tried both. Not truly happy with either. Getting a CTO is obviously a much bigger commitment than hiring a developer, so finding a partner with the right mix of skillset was not easy. Getting a developer was faster and cheaper in the short term, but very much a band-aid solution. Each time we iterate, we incur expenses. And we were limited in our ability to "change up" the developer since each new person would just want to rewrite the code from scratch.

I'm almost 24, with a dream, a promise made to myself, and a lack of information.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 11:40 AM PST

Hello everyone, so i'm 23 almost 24, I live in Texas and I have a bit of a small story to tell, but its important to me. This will be a bit of text, but not a book, and I'm looking for serious genuine information. (For those that want to skip my story and just get straight to the point you can skip down to the last paragraph.

I grew up poor, didn't go to college, have no degree, and now work as a machinist who was trained on the floor and make anywhere from 40-50k a year depending on what our workload for the year is. This 40-50k is nice, and a big change from my families wealth as a kid growing up, but I WANT MORE.

I have a friend who has been the best thing thats ever happened to me for the past 7 years, and she took the step, moved out of the small town we are from, started working at chipotle, met a lot of the right people, now she is getting promotions aiming for 100k a year, insane benefits, salary, etc. We talk a lot about where we will be in life and we made a promise to each other and to ourselves that when we are 40 and killing it in life we would take a vacation together to some part of the world.

This was in a way, a silly, but entirely not silly and serious moment for me that was deeply profound and motivating for myself and her and we truly do intend to become successful, and financially independent later in our lives. I can't even begin to explain what this feeling is like to me because i've never had this kind of motivation or drive before but I recently started losing weight, stopped smoking, started caring about my job more, etc.

For someone who is serious about making more money, who doesn't have a degree, who doesn't have kids, or a wife/girlfriend, and is wholeheartedly focused on becoming a millionaire by at least 40 as a current 24 year old, do any of you have any recommendations? My first step is getting out of this town and going somewhere else to make money, 40-50k may not seem like a lot to other people but to me its my life, and i would like to try and maintain this or improve when i move to a city such as say Dallas. I am good with computers, i am capable of doing high level math(cal 3) as I have in the past and know I can again. I'm interested in coding and I have thought a lot about it, but I'm not sure where to start. I plan on being frugal with my money outside of some purchases I have planned such as at home gym equipment etc. I am so seriously focused on this goal that I don't plan on letting anything stop me, and I know its a long, arduous, and steady road, no get rich quick schemes, I know this. I don't mind sacrificing my relationship life etc to accomplish this, because its deeper than that, and if I ever have kids I want more to give them than what I had given to me even though i wholeheartedly appreciate everything my parents did for me.

(Thank you for any input, I will keep up with this thread and genuinely consider all advice given to me)

    Crime Scene Cleanup?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 10:03 AM PST

Hello everyone, just a quick post because I could use some advice. I own and operate a commercial and residential cleaning company.

I was browsing the keywords on google AdWords that brought customers to my page.

I noticed not once but three times people had clicked on my ads after searching crime scene cleanup.

Now I bet your first thought it this is someone who had just committed and crime and was trying to hide it, mine too😂.

But in all seriousness is there some form of training to learn how to clean up crime scenes. I did a quick search and there actually doesn't seem to be any required permits or certifications but I still would want to be trained in the proper protective measures for me and my employees and proper cleaning techniques.

Weird post I know, but possibly profitable. Thank you! ~Nicholas

I am the founder & CEO of a fast growing SaaS & Fintech startup (~85 employees) and recently raised a $23M Series A - I'm happy to help you however I can - AMA

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 01:40 PM PST

I'm under the weather today and I thought it would be a good use of time to offer up advice to help out the community. AMA - how to start a company, build a team, strategy, fundraising tips etc.

    A little bit about me:

My name is Kyle and I founded a company called Flowhub, the leading business management & point-of-sale platform for cannabis dispensaries in the US. Based in Denver, we simplify compliance for nearly 1,000 legal cannabis retailers across North America, processing $2B in sales annually. I most recently raised a $23MM Series A from e.ventures, Poseidon, and Evolv Ventures (the Kraft Heinz venture arm) and have ~85 extraordinary teammates I get to work with everyday.

I'm so grateful to have other remarkably talented people invested like Kamran Ansari (Greycroft), Justin Overdorff (Stripe), Iqram Magdon-Ismail (co-founder & former CEO of Venmo), David Stern (former NBA commissioner), Alan Patricof (founder Greycroft), Theo Osborne (9Yards Capital), and others.

Here are some news articles about the most recent raise:

    https://techcrunch.com/2019/10/15/flowhub-raises-23-million-for-its-retail-management-software-for-cannabis-dispensaries/

    https://www.foodbev.com/news/kraft-heinzs-leads-23m-investment-in-cannabis-startup-flowhub/

    https://cheddar.com/media/cannabis-saas-startup-flowhub-lands-million-as-it-eyes-payments-space

    https://www.ganjapreneur.com/buffett-linked-venture-capital-fund-invests-in-flowhub/

    Some background:

In 2014, I began lobbying the Colorado Department of Revenue to build an API to Metrc, the state's cannabis tracking system, so that third parties like Flowhub could send data directly to the database instead of entering it manually. The Metrc API is now the standard used in more than 10 states, with Flowhub being the first vendor with a direct integration.

My goal is to grow a robust, transparent, scalable industry that is approachable for all adults and medical patients and to help small business owners thrive. Our company is working to make safe cannabis products accessible to every adult on planet earth.

I've been named a Top 100 Cannabis Leader by Entrepreneur Magazine, 30 AND UNDER by Business Insider, and an Associate Producer for the documentary "Weed the People" (now available on Netflix) which aims to educate mainstream audiences about medical cannabis as a human rights issue.

In addition, I'm a Founding Board Director and Treasurer of the Cannabis Trade Federation (CTF), the largest trade group for our industry. We're focused on building an inclusive industry and passing legislation like the STATES Act.

Is $7.35 shipping an envelope the best I can do? How can I make it faster and cheaper?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 09:51 AM PST

I pay $7.35 daily for shipping an 11 ounce USPS priority mail envelope (9"x11.5").

I use USPS because the mailbox is in my front yard and I don't want to go to the UPS store daily. I use Click-n-Ship which takes a few minutes to enter info, print and tape to the envelope.

I'm willing to buy a label maker and connect it with my Google Sheets to automatically print the addresses if I can. I expect my volume to increase, as it has this year.

    Thank you all!

EDIT: Priority Mail I use now is 1-2 day shipping. My speed doesn't matter too much, as long as it's within a week. 100% domestic.

    Lead gen business technical question

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 01:33 PM PST

I've been doing some copywriting here and there for years. And I've been working in sales and lead gen for just as long. I've seen ads online for lead gen landing pages and think it's a simple and cheap enough model to test out, considering my background.

My question: when building the landing page contact form, what are the options for storing and managing that data? HubSpot, google sheets, some email marketing software?

    Any help is appreciated!!

Making money Online is painful, hard and time consuming..

If somebody tells you that it is easy or it can be, beware he is selling something..

Infact, If you heard of a great new way (course or program) to make lots of money fast and easily, Beware - you're the customer not the entrepreneur.

    Is this legal?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 11:13 AM PST

I have an idea about making art in the style of a cartoon. If I create art that is completely made by me, but I do it exactly in the style of a specific cartoon, is that legal? Can I sell it legally with a title like "custom [CARTOON NAME] art"?

For example: a client submits an image of his/her choosing, a selfie or a portrait.

Experienced Programmer with business experience looking for a compelling project to contribute to for free

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 08:40 AM PST

    Hi All,

I've been interested in start ups and business my whole life. But I'm not yet ready to start my own project.

I have years of experience in front and back end development (mostly back end). I'm familiar with a few languages and frameworks and also have experience with mobile development.

Creating a full mobile app, REST api, website, automation script etc is comfortably within my capabilities.

I'm looking to find somebody working on a project that I find interesting, to which I'm happy to contribute for free. I don't need any money or a share of your business or anything like that. What I'm trying to get is experience working in a startup environment.

If you have a project and need some tech work done, please hit me up with a little bit about what you're working on.

I'm not promising that I will agree to join, as I am hoping to find a project that generates a real interest for me.

Hope to hear from some of you guys and gals.

Started a campaign on Teespring (Need help desperately) How do I fix this?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 07:39 AM PST

I tried the teespring sub, but, I also know many of you here are ecommerce buffs, and I wanted to ask here as well. I was just messaged by one of my customers that the shirt I've made for them, for their political rally coming up soon, can't be purchased through checkout. I can't find anything on the website about this. It's got 3 days left on the print, campaign ends DEC 8th. I'm stumped.

I haven't received my payoneer card yet, just created the account for it last night. <--- could this be why its not able to be purchased?

Am I the only one who can't stand mike taber?

From what I can tell the guy is basically an IT director who has never started anything really other than micro conf. He worked at a couple technology companies. Blue tic is an obvious failure. And I have to turn the podcast off whenever he does some cringey jab at the other host (too obvious mike is insecure).

Alright I'm done venting, for now.

How you share is just as important as what you share

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 06:20 AM PST

In one second someone subconsciously decides whether to engage with your content or to scroll by. Here are 6 twitter related tips about optimising for that one second.

    1) Give people a reason to click

One of the best at this is blogger, Steph Smith. She'll never "just share" an article. 90% of each tweet is focused on building up interest.

For example here is a recent tweet of hers setting up a recent article about, "Learning to write well"

Since launching my blog, I've had many people ask about my writing process. Sometimes, I feel like my answer is disappointing. The truth is, I'm not a natural writer! I've just designed a process that makes it easier for me to "show up".

Here it is: [Link to article]

    2) Don't waste characters

It's your job to build up interest. One of the worst ways of doing that is by rewriting your article title. It's already visible on your Twitter card.

    3) Use video to draw attention

People might be too busy to click your content. But they've got time to retweet a video. And then your link gets more attention as a result. For example:

    • If your you've got a podcast cut a 1 minute clip and share (with link to the full podcast)
    • If your launching a product, cut a short, sharp demo video together (with link to the website)

    [See Example]

    4) Your SEO title doesn't need to match your meta title

99% of articles have just one title. But if your SEO title is keyword heavy there's nothing stopping you going for a more engaging social sharing title.

For example, I recently wrote about How Nike sold its first shoes. I thought that was an enticing social sharing title, but I realised "Jeff Johnson Nike" has a search volume of 800 / mo. So I wanted to include that keyword in my SEO title. I went with "How Jeff Johnson sold Nike's first shoes". And now I rank No. 1 for that search term and get 600 / mo organic traffic.

    5) A bespoke meta image signals a higher quality article

"If they took the time to make an image then it must be good"

And it's less work than you think. Hone one template, then you're just tweaking the copy / colours for each new article. [See Example]

    6) People retweet clean tweets

Some people are conscious about what they retweet. Excessive blue text can look like an ad:

    • Strip away hashtags
    • Place URL at end of the tweet to hide it

Don't get me wrong hashtags have merit if you're a running some sort of campaign: #VolvoContest or #EndAlz. But retweets are a far more effective way of increasing reach than hashtags. And excessive hashtags will limit your retweets.

Anyways, thank you for reading. If you enjoyed it, I write about real-world marketing examples (like this one) over on marketingexamples.com. Any questions, I'll be floating in the comments :)

Getting a bit overwhelmed - any help appreciated

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 06:08 AM PST

I am on the verge of launching a subscription-based digital product service in the financial advisory space (in India). I have a fantastic team in place and I have experience in the domain. The tech is not too fancy - just a simple wordpress+woocommerce setup with Membership plugin with some other plugins.

However, beyond this, I am getting overwhelmed with the number of choices, SaaS products, plugins, extensions, and a ton of services available out there. Everything looks interesting and useful and I can visualize using each of them in some way or another. Simultaneously, and this is the irony, I also feel that I am missing out on some critical thing out there - some product, service - that would be invaluable to my business. :-(

    So, two questions:

    1. How do I handle this sense of being overwhelmed? How do I decide which ones I should go for and which ones not to?

    2. Any list of must-have tools, software that you can think of that I should make sure to check out?

    Thanks a bunch!
