When Cold calling do you ask your prospects if it's a good time to talk or if they have 5 minutes for a quick conversation?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 01:40 AM PDT

I'm sorry, I see this everywhere, in reddit posts and books, and I think it's the wrong approach because it gives the DM the opportunity to end the call quickly. what I do is I go into a very brief pitch/value prop, followed by discovery questions and with the more questions I ask I start asking pain point questions. I never get hung up on using this approach and 95% of people are nice and have a conversation with me to see if I have a solution that might be a better fit for them, then what they're currently using. I feel that starting a cold call off with a close ended question is quite simply the wrong approach, because it allows them to control the sales cycle and the outcome of my cold call. I also live in Alberta and people are quite nice and polite to cold callers.

    Ethics Of Sales

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:18 PM PDT

Does anybody ever get down when you want to do right by your customers but the powers that be at your company see it a different way?

An example would be telling a customer what cost them $1 renewing last year will now be $3 and even though you know it is just a cash grab you feel like the company could care less if the customer tells you to take a hike. Often times I sit in the shoes of my customers and feel awful because I would hate being on the receiving end of this but you have no power to override it.

Maybe ranting a bit at this point but wondering if others have thoughts on this or similar reservations?

    Flaky Leads

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:17 PM PDT

I work at a dealership that gets a LOT of subprime customers on the new car side. It doesn't take much effort to get an appointment set or get any kind of commitment from these people, they just want any car a bank will let them get.

I'm running into a huge wall trying to get these customers actually inside the dealership for their appointments. I call a lead, set an appointment, follow up immediately via text, call an hour before and confirm, and then the appointment rolls around and crickets. Prime customers always show, but it's maybe 1 in 4-6 appointments with subprimes who actually show up.

Is this normal? What are y'all doing to convert your set appointments into appointments that actually show up?

Would anyone be interested in a cold-calling practice community?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:41 AM PDT

I'm terrified of cold calling (don't like phones in general, tbh) and see that there's a lot of discussion on this thread about the best cold calling techniques. I thought it might be useful to start a slack channel or something similar for people who want to refine or develop their cold calling skills in a "safe" environment.

    Anyone else game?

Phone answered to "I'm in a meeting"

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:15 AM PDT

    Hi r/sales!

Long time lurker, first (maybe 2nd) time poster.

How do you deal with the above without coming off as snarky or aggressive? Of the many many times I've heard this fob off used I'd say 2 times were genuine (they were whispering or I could hear the person presenting in the background), as we all know well,if they pick up the phone they have time, or at least a minute or 2!

    Any advice appreciated!

    Missing commissions...protest working?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:50 AM PDT

I was on maternity leave and I went through the last 3 months' commission statements and a lot was missing & incorrect. My company owes me about $10,000 in commissions based on my math.

My SVP says it'll "take him some time" to audit my commission statements so he won't give me a clear answer of when I'll be paid.

Should I tell him I'm pausing all sales efforts until I'm paid? What can I say/do to light a fire under management to pay me?

Starting my sales career in a company without a sales culture. Good decision?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 05:34 AM PDT

I've started off my sales career in a B2B IT-development company. It has an amazing great culture, but isn't really sales minded. Now, I've read a lot of your posts, and I've learned that many IT-company's lack a decent commercial culture. However, this company..:

    - ..does not have any (sales) targets;

    - ..refuses to innovate on products, therefore I cannot longer explain the added value towards my customers;

    -.. does not assist in the generation of any leads;

-.. basically think they rock and that they will conquer the world because of it.

So, just a question for you guys: am I just becoming a giant bi-atch, or is it logical that a have some doubts about my future here?

Canadian citizen moving to US sales

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:41 PM PDT

    Hey everyone.

I am interested if anyone has experience transitioning from Canada to US for a job. I am currently a Canadian citizen. What is the visa process like? Can I just apply to jobs in the US? Should I try and find a multi national company in Canada, work for then here and try to be promoted to a US role?

I have about 18 months experience and would be looking for a junior AE role in the software space.

Any advice or insight from someone who has made this transition would be greatly appreciated.

First Sales face to face interview in many years - please help!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:03 AM PDT

I have my second round of a sales interview face to face in a few days. My initial phone interview went well obviously... It's for an account manager (established book of business) position in the building materials industry. Not overly technical compared to the service I sell now. It also doesn't sound like I'll be doing any actual cold calling. He hinted that it'll be situational focused..

However, I transitioned into my current AM role from a Project Manager. I never interviewed for it. So this is uncharted territory for me. My good friend gave me a list of situational questions he'd ask a new rep:

    1) Tell me about a time that you found yourself in a disagreement (or conflict) with another individual - how did you approach it?

    2) Describe a challenging situation and how you handled it.

    3) Talk to me about a time when you encountered resistance from someone you ultimately knew you needed to align with - how did you work through this?

    4) Walk me through how you approach an account that is no access or difficult to access.

    5) You have an account that has only dabbled in prescribing your product - what do you do?

    6) Talk me through how you develop your business plan. And also walk me through how you execute it.

    7) We've just walked out of an account together after a conversation with one of your HCPs and a few of his nurses. How would you like our conversation together to go?

    8) What do you anticipate to be one of your biggest challenges in this role & territory?

    9) Tell me about a time at work when you faced significant (-eg: organizational) change - how did you handle?

Also, should I bring something like a 30/60/90 plan as well? Maybe help differentiate me from the person before?

    Thank you !

What to expect in “meet the team” informal interview?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 06:23 AM PDT

As the title states. Basically I have what I believe to be a final interview with a company tomorrow. Have already gone through the rounds of phone interview, in person with regional sales manager and VP of sales. They then wanted me to meet the team and have asked me to meet at a Starbucks with one of their manufacturer reps. Does anyone have experience with a similar interview experience? I'm imagining the list has been narrowed down to myself and one or two others.

    Someone help me out

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:06 AM PDT

I received my associates in general business from a community college. I actually have some old posts bookmarked that are guides to getting into SaaS; yet..

I've looked on so many job recruiting sites and can't see to find one that doesn't seem sketchy or is strictly commission based with 50/50 reviews in my area.

Just like many others, I'd like to get into SaaS but finding a start is becoming troubling. I don't care if it takes time I just want to make sure I'm pursuing a job that will get me into that position.

What company would hire someone with technically zero sales experience and an associates? Also should I try to work full time and take online classes towards a bachelors?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:05 AM PDT

So I'm currently working in one of the largest Pharmaceutical companies in the UK, and am looking to move after 18 months experience into medical devices. I'm currently in the interview process and have been asked to speak to the hiring managers for the 3 companies listed in the title.

Stryker: Sports division working with devices that explore ligament injuries in the knee/shoulder/hip. 30-35k/yr +~15k OTE

    J&J: Hip and Knee devices 35-40k/yr +?OTE

    Hillrom: Medical beds/specialist beds 35-45k/yr + ~15k OTE

    Can anyone provide:

    1. Advice for the interview process and what each company may be looking for.
    2. Insight into the roles and the differences between medical devices and pharma.
    3. Any cultural differences between the companies

    Telemarketing- How direct are you?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 09:49 AM PDT

I feel that the answers I get to this question vary by an individual's way of selling. Some reps on our team are direct and upfront with what they are wanting to meet about, and results in a good qualified meeting but lower activity. Where as some are vague for booking the meeting, but have higher activity.

I'd love to hear some responses from veterans who have been in sales for a few years! What's worked for you?

Advice for someone wanting to become a BDR.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:53 AM PDT

    I'll keep this short.

I will graduating with an engineering degree in April and I have 2 years of internship experience in engineering.

I want to start my career as a BDR is SaaS.

My biggest hurdle is that I have no sales experience.

I've had a few interviews for a BDR role but they asked me to apply again when I'm closer to graduating.

Any tips on what I could do part-time from now until April to make me a better candidate?

And are there companies that do hire 6 months out? (I live in the Toronto area if that matters).

    Part-time jobs to meet prospects

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:39 AM PDT

I'm in a school full-time and am working towards a degree in a field I'm passionate about. I'd like to start my own local business once I get my license but understand it takes time to get clients.

I know I also need to pay my bills and it seems like a part-time job while in school would be a good idea. However why not get a job that allows me to meet a lot of people in the area and form relationships. Perhaps a job where it's common to most of the same people every day. I thought of waitressing but the environment sounds to hectic to make long enough conversation.

    Thoughts?

Interview for sales manager position but no sales experience

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:12 AM PDT

I graduate this December and I have an interview in a few days for a small company that has a sales manager position open.

I am an investments/finance major and I do have some solid real world business experience which is why my resume stood out to this company.

I met an employee from the company who happened to be a childhood friend of mine. She said I should would be a good fit for the job. The only sales experience I have was being a sales associate at a retail store where I live. That's was a few years ago.

I'm 22. Feel like I don't know what I'm getting myself in to. Any advice?

We are about to hire Salesperson in US. Tools, requirements and other things we are interested in.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:49 AM PDT

    Hey,
We are a digital agency (Web development, web design, graphic design, paid marketing.) from Croatia and we are about to hire one salesperson in the US to find us more clients. At this moment we are getting more than 99% of our clients from Freelancer platform where we are one of the top Freelancer companies on that specific platform. But the bad thing for the business is to relate only on one source of clients and that's why we decide to hire one person in the US (since 80% of our clients came from US.)
We don't know much about salaries and how much should that person be paid. Also, we are not familiar with the results we should expect from that person and what tools and services that person needs.

    Could you help me? please

Using Indeed we found that average Salesperson Salaries in the United States are '$57,467 per year'. But we are more than welcome to give an extra % of a closed deal if we see that salesperson's goal is really to help our company and generate new deals.

As I already said, we don't know what day of salesperson look like, and what equipment he/she needs. We would buy Mac Book Pro, mobile phone (as desired) and traditional telephone for cold calling, and services it needs for email sending. Is there anything I forget? Oh yes, he would probably be the only salesperson in the office for 6-12 months before we decide to expand the sales team.

Next things are expectations. What we should expect from that person? How many cold calls one person can make per day on average? Who needs to find those numbers? How many cold emails can one person send? Who needs to find those emails? Is there any average closing % for our industry and companies like we are (digital agency)?

How to test a salesperson before we hire? What tools should we use to track the progress of the salesperson? Is there any state you would suggest to me for finding an office and salesperson? We were thinking about NY, but if you have a better suggestion I would be thankful.

I'm not a native English speaker and don't hate me if I write something wrong :D
Thank you for your time. You can always contact me in PM.
    Have a great day.
