Due diligence questions for the following role: Head of Sales for a hedge fund

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 08:44 AM PDT

I'm currently in discussion with the founder / Chief Investment Officer of a small hedge fund (about $250M Asset Under Management) for a role of head of sales (really, I'd be the only salesperson outside of the founder who has been actively raising capital through his network).

As a background, I have an extensive sales background (about 5 years in various industries, with Salesforce that acted as my training wheel in sales), but in the fund industry I only have 9 months experience as an internal wholesaler. I got connected to this founder through a mutual connection who was quite impressed with my background / skillset / ambition / drive / etc.

We had our original informal chat last week, and he reached out to me today asking to have a second discussion. I want to be prepared with proper due diligence questions beyond what I can find on the fund's website (I have access to firm's AUM, track record, staff biography, legal documents). I also already know which geographic markets the founder has targeted and has not targeted, and the kind of track record he's had in terms of capital raising.

What kind of questions would you guys ask if you were in my shoes?

Any Sales Coordinators out there with any advice/tips for getting hired?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:58 AM PDT

    Hello dear Sales Redditers,

I'm off to the 2nd interview for a Sales Coordinator role at a Smart Cities Technology startup. Do you guys have any advice/tips for what I should research before the interview? Besides the obvious research into the company's products, services, and offerings, are there any core skills (soft and technical) that I should look into? Anything particular I can say to increase my chances for hire?

I'm looking to getting a comprehensive experience in sales, providing sales support and admininstration so that I can eventually get into Sales Operations and Business Analytics. Should I talk about the online courses I'm taking for Business Analytics, or do you think that'll be a bit off-topic? I'm also earning my Administrator Certificate in Salesforce, which I think would really help.

Any advice would help! I've been job searching for 8 months now, and it sucks, and I'm ready to commit myself to a role and a company for the next couple of years!

How to stay relevant until final interview?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:44 AM PDT

Interviewing for a new role, have had 2 phone interviews with hiring managers and 2 with other reps this week. All went well and was invited to final F2F interview with hiring manager and VP, but it is not for 2 weeks when they are both in town. What can I do between now and then to ensure I remain relevant since I won't be actively speaking to hiring manager until then? I typically don't have this much time in between so want to make sure I'm maximizing my chances at landing the role.

Book Recommendation - Waste Management & Selling Advertising Space

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:06 AM PDT

I've two opportunities which are quite a bit different from each other. I'm the kind of guy who devours as much information on a topic before making a big decision.

I have one opportunity which is selling advertising space. The space is in a cardboard prospectus for local schools and I would be tasked with cold calling local businesses surrounding the school and selling them advertising space.

Another is for a local waste management firm. The usual business development stuff. I have a solid grasp on the sales aspects of this job but a bit more industry knowledge would help.

Any help would be appreciated as I know there some sales legends on here.

    DISC Assessment-Opinions?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:20 PM PDT

    Hello,

I applied to a mortgage company and was asked to complete a personality assesment. I think this is the DISC Assessment, however on th e test, they labeled the 4 metrics as Decisive, Interactive, Stabilizing and Cautious. On the Wikipedia page, these 4 metrics are Dominance (D), Inducement (I), Submission (S), and Compliance (C). I am wondering if this measures slightly different things or for copyright reasons they label it differently.

    Here is a screenshot:

    https://i.imgur.com/e1sD7mB.png

    Link to Wikipedia:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DISC_assessment

The test asks you to move boxes around to high priority and low priority.

    They would say:

Read a book on new technology

Read a book on social work

    Read a book on Art

    Read a book on Persuasion

    Read a book on Law

and you would order those on most likely/interesting to least...

I took a Wonderlic test a little while back that seemed like an IQ test. This, I'm not too sure of, do you guys think this is snake oil or legit?

How to pivot from wedding catering sales 75K to something else?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:26 PM PDT

Hi all! I was a biology major at a good school, but didn't want to go to nursing school anymore after I graduated. I ended up selling weddings (essentially catering) for a venue, and am having lots of fun! With my 1% commission + base, I'm making 75K a year. I definitely want to figure out how to pivot to a different sales industry to make more $, but I'm having a hard time thinking about what else would my weird background be good for. If anyone has tips or suggestions, they are highly appreciated! Thank you! - sincerely, a girl trying to make it in the Bay Area

Compare and contrast different types of sales jobs?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:06 PM PDT

Most of my experience in sales has been selling solar panels D2D. Reasons why I love this job:

    - I love grinding (I have an addictive personality and love chasing goals)

    - I love being out and about (not stuck in a desk all day)

    - I love quick, aggressive closes. I'm comfortable taking control and speaking with authority

    - I love sales predominantly based on logic and numbers

If I'm honest with myself, my key weaknesses (which I'm working on) include:

    - Connecting with people on a human level. Being relaxed, smiling, coming across as just a friendly pal

    - Being naturally charismatic and likable. I come across as too robotic.

So, besides D2D, are there any other types of sales that could play to my strengths (confidence and logic) without as much reliance on my weakness (relationship building)? I'm basically trying to plan my next career move over the next few years.

Post Product Demo Follow Up Strategies

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:54 PM PDT

Very new Medical SaaS start up here.

We are selling a relatively new technology to care homes in and around the region, targeting therapists and care home directors. Sales activities only really started a few months ago (in other words we have no revenue currently), and I was roped in recently to build the company's sales processes from scratch.

Thus far, we have been experimenting with a few methods of prospecting and we found that cold call site visits get the highest lead to demo conversion ratios. The main issue is that after we do the demo with clients, in which they are usually very excited / eager to make purchases, the number of licences that they want to purchase tend to be very low or disproportionate to the actual requirements of the organisation (ie. purchasing 10 licences vs the potential 60-70 licences required at the organisation). This problem is further amplified by the fact that most healthcare organisations here would want to apply for some government grant / funding in order to purchase the licences, though based on their financial reports we know that they are perfectly capable of making the purchase with their own money.

I am of the opinion that we should just go ahead with what ever initial amount these organisations are comfortable paying cash with first and the balance number of licences paid using grant funding later on. Rationale being that a little money in our pockets right now is better than no money. This way we get some money for our efforts first, and some time down the road we implement the rest of the plan with the clients.

One of the co-founders thinks that that's a terrible idea and that she doesn't want to do this kind of "small" business. She'd rather we secure as much as we can at the beginning and have the clients pay as much in cash as possible. I understand that they have time pressure from the board to show some sales numbers, but from the way things were done previously, this would require a long lead time for grant approval, different decision makers approval etc.

What are some strategies we can use to bring up those numbers as soon as possible?

TLDR: We're stuck post demo, need help.

Breaking into medical sales as a PT or nurse?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:31 PM PDT

I am a physical therapist and have a wife that is a sticu nurse. We are both considering taking the leap into sales. I've been looking and it appears that for most medical sales jobs you have to have about 2 years of experience in the sales world. Are there any exceptions? I didn't know if since we both were medical professionals if that would carry any weight.

Also if you do need 2 years of sales prior to applying to a medical sales job what type of sales do you suggest getting into?

What Does your President’s Club/Sales Contest look like?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:31 PM PDT

We're on the last sprint of 2019, hope everyone had a successful calendar year so far!

In the spirit of the end of the year coming up, I'm curious to hear what those of you get if you hit your major yearly sales milestone (President's Club/Sales Contest/etc).

Do you get a all expenses paid trip? Where to this year? Bonus? Stock?

Call centers... What can you say about them?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:17 PM PDT

    Hello!

Context: As a recent college grad, I am looking for a decently paying job. I don't mind a difficult or boring job, it just needs to pay decently.

I have read several people here mention that call centers can pay a very decent wage (50-80k) right from the start. Can anyone fill me in on the details?

    - How hard is it to get in?

    - What does one need in order to make it?

    - What industries have call centers?

    - How does a call center differ from other sales jobs such as the SDR role?

    - Finally... Would you recommend it? (Is it a good way to make some quick money and break into the sales industry?)

People that are independent medical device reps. What's your story?

How were you guys able to score a job as a medical sales rep

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:52 PM PDT

I was wonder how did you guys get your foot in the door as a medical sales rep. What degrees did you guys have? Prior jobs that have helped you? Any sales experience? Or basically anything that you think may have helped you get the job. I'm thinking of looking for a job as a medical sales rep after getting my bachelors. I don't want to do pharmaceutical sales I'd rather do something along the lines of surgical device and work in the OR due to the fact that I have an associates in surgical technology and it's a familiar environment. Any advice is appreciated thanks!
